LOCATING CRASHED AIRPLANE

I would like to convey my condolences to all families of passengers and crew on board Air Asia Indonesia flight QZ8501

1. Flight International magazine dated 14 – 20 Oct 2014 carries an article entitled, “Searching for Answers.” Together is a small picture with MH 370 written on some material. (See here for story)

2. The article relates about “Another rift in the competitive landscape between Airbus and Boeing.” It seems that while Airbus is ready to move forward with a deployable flight data and voice recorder system for commercial aircraft, Boeing which has installed deployable recorders on at least three military aircraft fleets, disagrees that the technology is appropriate or safe for commercial transport.

3. The Airbus concept involves deploying one of the two sets of flight data and cockpit voice recorders in the event of a mid-air collision or impact with the ground. The deployed unit includes a locator beacon, and is designed to float if the crash occurs in water.

4. Just imagine if this recorder and beacon is installed on the Air Asia Indonesia aircraft or MH370, we would not have to search the oceans for the planes.

5. I cannot understand why Boeing is against it. Says the article, “If either the Malaysian or the French airlines (which crashed in 2009) were equipped with a deployable flight recorder, the narrative of the search would likely be different.” (The article was written before the loss of QZ8501)

6. An article in FlightGlobal.com of Dec 2006 reports that Boeing had received a US patent for a system that allows seizure of an aircraft by remote control as a means to prevent terrorist hijacking.

7. Boeing had made no comment on its powerful capability. And MH 370 has not been found till now. And now Boeing seems to be unwilling to make finding lost aircrafts easier and faster, possibly saving lives as well. Why??

8. The mystery deepens.

  1. Assalamualaikum Tun,

I have yet to read the new book onMH370 “Someone Is Hiding Something: What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?” – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/mh370-cyberjacked-new-book-suggests#sthash.tBFO90f7.dpuf .Everyone knows there’s eye in the sky, even ‘tomnod’ website gives access to satellite images for rescue ops to general public. I have even asked them to provide images of the area at THAT particular time, but no response.
The simple question is “Doesn’t anyone have images of the flying MH370 at around that time? For 6 hours after last contact. Then we will know the destination of the plane!” And when big brother says you have WMD inside your garage and the world believes! They had the technology, now conveniently nobody has the technology.
Tun, what you stated in the first place is right, the families of the victims should sue Boeing for their technological loophole rather than blame MAS, that is JUST.

  3. Boeing is making MH370 part 2 anytime soon. With the beacon, MH370 part 2 will never happen. Boeing 777 is not a safe airplane anymore…

    Other things.

I made known to everyone here the plus highway is jalan menempah maut previously. Plus is improving the safety lately. Thank you.

However if someone like to claims millions of ringgit on PLUS insurance, you still can make it. To north the safety is improving but to the south from rawang still di takuk lama. Any accident happen at that route, u just claim Plus insurance becoz it is jalan menempah maut…with the present safety standard, the judge will award you millions of ringgit.

So PLUS, improve or you will pay a hefty sum due to your penny wise pound foolish policy.

    Good luck.

  4. ITS nice to see World , Neighbours coming forward gives a helping hand
This the way It should be and
Lets destroy those War Mongers who needs war for their economic importance
Thank you all human being Human

  5. Dear Tun

Upon reflection your comments on the ‘deployable’ flight recorders deployed on their military aircraft, I have the following to add. The technology in the view of Boeing is one of military application alone at this time. Boeing after all is a major military contractor to the US government and its allies.

Putting Boeing’s objections to deploying this device on commercial airliners the question is why are countries like Malaysia not pursuing such a system of their own. The technology is available and access to it is the issue to deal with.

Asians tend to believe only the west has technology, a position India and China have refused to accept by going hell for leather to develop systems unique to their own needs in many instances of a higher quality than that available in the west.

The technology to remotely access an airlines computer is already in existence and has been so for a few decades. It is the willingness and the political will to alter our imported systems to suit our needs that is lacking.

We borrow heavily with our newly found economic wealth from abroad but fail to understand what lies beneath the shiny surface of what we borrow and import.

It is the reason I wrote the piece on the PR failures by AirAsia facing a full frontal assault by western media seeking to destroy its ascendancy in the wake of the rise of Asian airlines against their failing western counter parts.

We need to select people for jobs on merit whilst also maintaining national policies like the NEP and the advancement of those who need to be assisted without losing the national identity in the process.

  7. Salam Tun.

LOCATING CRASHED AIRPLANE … in this age of technology should be so easy.

    1. But, securing the embedded datas and secrets recorded and contained in the crashed airplane would require a delay on the part of the perpetrators’ and the so-called SAR efforts in order to buy enough time to wipe clean their dirty tracks.

    2. For his theatrics, Tony Fernandez deserves to be sued by the shareholders of Air Asia’s for his audacity, vague or not, for accepting full responsibility of the crash on their behalf. Now, MAS can claim that they have a quieter but cleverer CEO than Air Asia.

    3. When it was revealed that Chinese hackers had stolen 85GB of information on US Boeing’s and Lockheed military plane secret, it is not so unusual that the collateral damage of an ongoing US-China conflict will take its toll on an innocent bystander nation like Malaysia, conveniently becoming the stage for these two superpowers to settle their score and showcase their intelligence/military might.

    4. MH370 and MH17, obviously are victims of US-China espionage scuffle and electronic war weaponry and instruments testing. And the likelihood of Air Asia’s plane to fall for the same is almost another indisputable black flag operation. “Gajah dan gajah bergaduh, kancil (yang kalau kurang bijak) mati tersepit di tengah.”

    5. Joko Widodo has to put a foot in his mouth for prematurely declaring a coming back of Indonesia’s maritime supremacy. Where have all their military ships, submarines and satellites gone hiding at the critical moment for the survivors, if as reported that the plane made a safe landing before sinking. To deflect their weakness, the Indons authorities now are showing their inherent displeasure with Malaysia, under the pretext of regulating Air Asia business malpractice in their country. Again and as usual, they cast aspersions on our beloved Malaysia to simultaneously cover up their staged poor handling of the SAR operations.

  8. Dear Tun,

Please allow me to quote Mr Illioni as below,

I think it is the right thing to do for Tony Fernandez to represent his company regardless of who the biggest stakeholder for the entity is because what matter is that the flight is an Air Asia flight and Tony Fernandez is the owner of that company. And, as a member of public, I think Tony did a superb job in managing the difficult and challenging situation. Instead of playing with words and being vague like the PR spin masters or “lawyers” do. He took a bold step to take ownership of the problem and that won him what’s most important at this time which can’t be bought even with money – “REPUTATION”.

Nowadays, there are very few capable people in power/charge who still have the intelligence and guts to do what they think is right. Well Done, Tony!””
    ————————————————————————————————-

    Dear Mr. grkumar,
I think you and Ilioni have a point there. I salute Tan Sri Tony Fernandez as a very capable entrepreneur and the way he handles the QZ8501 disaster in such forth coming, courageous, disarming and takes the bull by the horns manner is really reassuring. I am sure every passenger has been insured by consortium of insurance companies, as a matter routine, to cater for such eventualities. As a matter of procedure, the adjuster from the insurance company would decide liabilities whether aircraft manufacturer or Air Asia are liable, not with standing, what Tan Sri Tony Fernandez said to assuage the the initial shock and panic among the families of the victims.
We should give all our support and respect to Tan Sri Tony Fernandez who has been managing Air Asia so successfully if we compare to MAS(GLC) which has been cheating tax payers money to date. The MAS CEO and management are either utterly idiotic, irresponsible and crooks to squander government money by charging RM49 FOR A PACKET OF nasi lemak by MAS caterer, among many other mega abuses. Wallahu alam.

    amin tan

  9. This and others like it are the reason why a CEO (or anyone else) must not accept responsibility but avoid any reference till a finding is completed on any accident.

Appearing below is an extract of a report published by the Berggruen Institute for Public Governance and reported widely now in the US and elsewhere.

” Indonesian authorities on Friday questioned whether the pilot had followed correct weather procedures, and later suspended Indonesia AirAsia’s Surabaya to Singapore flights, saying the airline’s operating license only permitted flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Djoko Murdjatmodjo, Indonesia’s acting Director General of Air Transportation, said on Saturday that the Transport Ministry would investigate other routes used by the carrier, which flies from at least 15 Indonesian destinations.

“We are going to investigate all AirAsia flight schedules. Hopefully we can start on next Monday,” he said. “It is possible AirAsia’s license in Indonesia might be revoked,” he added.

Sunu Widyatmoko, Indonesia AirAsia chief, told reporters the airline, which is 49-percent owned by Malaysia-based AirAsia , would cooperate with the inquiry.

“The government has suspended our flights from Surabaya to Singapore and back,” he said. “They are doing the evaluation process. AirAsia will cooperate fully with the evaluation.”

It is sad that these things happen. But inspite of the solemnity and sadness of the occasion it has to be dealt with.

Mr. Fernandez’s “accepting full responsibility” may cost the airline more than mere dollars.

    Ilioni

You misread and misrepresent what I have said in my posting on this topic. It is not a question of whether Tony Fernandez represents the company or otherwise. I have not argued his legitimacy to represent the company only the disastrous comments attributed to him in “accepting full responsibility” for the crash which I thought was a bit hasty.

He does represent the company Air Asia and there is no issue here about it. Tony Fernandez is a local hero in Malaysia but not so elsewhere where they are looking for anything with the word Malaysian on it to drag through the dirt and scapegoat. Thanks to Anwar, Ambiga, the so called “liberals” and Lim Kit Siang thats not difficult to do these days. Add to that you have the Malaysian Insider, Malay Mail online and Malaysia Kini and you will realize Malaysia does not need any more enemies.

Your inability to understand the issues in what I raised in my posting is clear from the way you respond.

Tony Fernandez does not own the company Air Asia. Not when it is a public company anyway. He is its CEO and founder.

The shareholders of Air Asia are the owners of the company. It is acknowledged he is CEO and perhaps one of its larger shareholders. And when shareholders are not happy (and they amount to thousands) they may vote with their feet and do more damage to the company than the air crash for what the CEO said or did not say and how he may have allowed the matter to be dealt with in the media (foreign media especially). And that’s damaging to all.

Fernandez is also acknowledged as founder of the company. These are some concepts in the corporations law and in general matters that you must first understand at a basic level before levelling criticism.

The point I sought to raise that appears to have escaped you is that of “accepting responsibility for the problem”( i.e. the crash of the airliner in the Java sea belonging to Air Asia).

The reason I say that is thus: the cause of the crash has not been established. The recovery of the aircraft wreckage and its black box and cockpit voice recorder have not yet been completed let alone found.

To have accepted “full responsibility” before any other finding can be made is suicidal. The media may forgive him as should the rest of us as it must have been a spontaneous comment and a slip at that made by an honest and hardworking man.

However to make such an admission (which is what it is) by accepting full responsibility for something for which responsibility cannot be apportioned to yet, is something insurance companies and lawyers who will inevitably come to to sue Air Asia love to hear.

Such a statement absolves them of their liability. And don’t for one minute believe that they will not take that into consideration when suing. Then there are the relatives of the passengers and the owners of cargo it carried. Whether you like it or not and refer to my comments as ‘vague’ legal language, they will sue. And to their delight they will have Tony Fernandez’s admission and acceptance of “full responsibility” of evidence of an admission and of culpability.

Maybe Mr. Fernandez meant he felt a sense of “moral responsibility”, but in the heat and emotion of the moment he slipped and said he “accepted full responsibility”. There is much in words that cannot be dismissed as legal speak alone. There are 3 things in life that once released cannot be recovered or withdrawn. One: The sped bullet or arrow. Two: the missed opportunity and three: the spoken word.

There is much anguish all round. The western media have hushed up the Greek Ferry disaster which continues to say only 10 people died. Yet the Italian investigators and the prosecutors office in Italy in charge of that disaster now says 98 passengers and crew are not accounted for. Add that to the 10 so called missing the press reports in their favour and you get 108. Yet it does not occupy the headlines nor is the misstatement of casualties corrected. That of itself is a disaster and an injustice.

In Australia, the UK and in the US the Air Asia crash is being reported as “a Malaysian Airlines Air Asia that went missing. The third tragedy for that country’s airline”.

We have to be careful of what we say and how we say it.

  13. Salam YAB & Yg diKasihi Tun,

    Terima kasih Tun.

*** Semoga Allah SWT sentiasa melindungi Tun sekeluarga. ***

  14. Dear Tun,

    1. In most search and rescue operations, the first 48 hours is crucial for the lives of survivors.

    2. In the Air Asia QZ8501 tragedy, the operation was suspended reportedly due to nightfall.

    3. After few days, they found one body floating in the sea without pants on. Surely the person did not undress when the plane was in distress and everybody was required to buckle up. And not when he and others onboard were unconscious following a steep climb (as one theory suggests).

    4. A logical explanation would be he survived initially but being left in the sea for too long reduced the chance for survival.

  15. Salam Tun,

I agree with your writing. With all the advanced technologies available, MH 370 seems to vanish to thin air.

    Keep writing, Tun.

To those who wish read BM version of Tun’s writing, kindly click below http://www.translationfocus.blogspot.com

Love to hear from all of you.

    Thank you.

  16. Assalamualaikum Tun.

    Misteri. Misteri semakin mendalam.

Kononnya saya takut saya perlu gunakan tangan sendiri.

Tapi bukan melalui tangan saya sendiri. Syukur alhamdulillah.

Bila bercakap pasal keselamatan sudah tentu ia melibatkan nyawa. Baru 2 tahun (2013-2014) kita melalui proses ‘panglima’. Termasuk peristiwa lahad datu.

Sedangkan kita sebelum ini perlu melalui proses ‘ulama’ selama 5 tahun.

    Mungkin….mungkin MH370 akan dijumpai 3 tahun lagi (andaian sahaja)…mungkin sahaja…

    Terima kasih Tun.

  17. We cannot know y the rift. Both sides have strong arguments. N democratic institutions will see to that eventually. As leaders elsewhere like to say ‘ govt knows best’ we should leave this to high tech expertise to resolve. Let not begrudge Boeing do it ‘ My Way’. N now we see the absolute correctness in having MH17 wreckage towed to holland not here.
We have first to determined was the crash accidental, human factor or intentional.if it’s the last then no need for locater, the hijackers will find u.
The first two are within managing. Politico-Religious too have their rifts dont just pointing to boeing n airbus. Ever since george habash pioneered aircraft hijacking to resolve alleged grievances the cost n risk of air travel skyrocketed. The major onus of blame are on those countries that breed them.
Seizure of a hijacked aircraft by remote control does not get to the root cause.
To say Boeing is against systems to find missing aircraft easier n faster base on a magazine article assumes one has spent a lifetime in the aviation
industry n that article backs ones extensive knowledge. Let Boeing n Airbus do it ‘Their Way’ . It’s much more credible.
Malaysia chose soviet sukhois over the better American fighter jets used by ‘ little israel’, indonesia, Thailand, Filipinos. India too chose Russian as relations then were good. Make fun of baseball ‘ World Series’ when it’s totally American – baseball hegemony?.not knowing it’s named after a paper. N now insinuating against that American icon Boeing just bcos the US vetoed recognition of ‘ Palestine’ while the EU ( Airbus) support it?
There just ain’t no mystery at all

  18. Salam Tun,

Allow me to convey my condolences to those who affected by the QZ850I tragedy. I am in total agreement with Tun’s view and that was my first reaction as well. In this modern day, why do we need 3 days to find where the plane is? Who is going to bear the cost of that and most importantly those first few days are the most critical time if we were to have any hope in finding any survivors!

  19. In the past month 6 Qantas Aircraft were returned to departure points having experienced serious technical problems in flight. These reports were carried in small negligible coloumns in local papers in Australia. Nothing more said about it.

A Qantas Boeing 747 crashed when it overshot the runway in Bangkok in 1999. There were no fatalities.

In 2008 a Qantas 747 ruptured its fuselage over the south China sea with no fatalities. In 2008 a Qantas Airbus 330 over Western Australia suffered an uncontrolled nose dive by the plain causing several serious injuries to passengers though the plane landed safely.

What is perhaps not known but has been speculated on for a long time is that Qantas aircraft are fitted with sophisticated electronic surveillance and eves dropping equipment which makes much of the fleet a non standard fleet operated by former RAAF pilots and others with a military background.

There is no denying that Qantas is the safest airline in the world. That of itself is a statistic tempting fate. Air New Zealand had that label too once till the Mt. Erebus disaster in which all crew and passengers of a DC-10 crashed in the Antarctic.

Getting to the issues raised here, Boeing is not the only one to have a system capable of taking over an airplane in the event of a hijacking. Remote control of aerial vehicles manned and unmanned has been available for some time now.

What is interesting in the recent accident involving the crashing of Air Asia Indonesia is that the media in Australia and the UK and US continue to call it Malaysian Airlines Air Asia. There is not mention of the fact that Virgin Airlines is a significant a major shareholder of the business.

Mentions of Sir Richard Branson’s association with Air Asia from a shareholder perspective were quickly removed in subsequent news bulletins making Tony Fernandez, a Malaysian and the sole owner of Air Asia.

To our dismay Fernandez goes on air and “accepts full responsibility” for the disaster. On the one hand the uninitiated may find it t be an act of a responsible CEO. On a better reading of his statement it is unmitigated idiocy especially when the cause of the disaster has not been established nor the extent of damages and losses which may have no bearing on Air Asia’s obligations or its actions or omissions.

In preempting liability he accepts publicly responsibility for the crash which only heightens his liability and that of his airlines in a litigious world relieving the aircraft and its engines and components manufacturers of their liability.
