2. But what is worthy of note at this LIMA is the progress of Malaysia’s own aerospace industries. This took up almost one-third of the space and the exhibits were reflective of their progress and sophistication. Malaysian companies now design and produce electronic command and control systems. They proudly exhibit their capabilities in the production and servicing of sophisticated aircraft components and mastery of aviation electronics.
3. There were quite a number exhibiting UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). These remote-control airplanes come in many sizes. They can be used for aerial photography and target location and even for aggressive attacks against the enemy.
5. Of all the fighting crafts I have seen the submarine is easily the most complex. It has scores of monitors and TV screens to inform the operators of what is happening in every part of the craft. There were wires and tubes everywhere. All of them I am told are crucial to the operation of the vessel, on the surface, at periscope depths and underwater.
6. Because of the small space available everything is cramped and overlap each other. I wondered whether the crew can identify all these wires, tubes and equipments and locate where they head to. The commander assured me that they could. They have learnt to locate things in the dark even in case of electricity failure.
7. I noted that all the parts bear scientific names. All the manuals on operation and emergency measures were in English and French.
8. The sleeping bunks are tiny. Once in bed the crew can hardly raise their heads. It was claustrophobic and I don’t think I can survive in that environment. But the boat sailed all the way from France to Malaysia without mishap. The crew do not seem to suffer from anything serious.
9. A group of MPs including from the opposition also visited the submarine and they were as impressed as I was.
10. I remember the first navy vessels of the Royal Malaysian Navy, which I visited in 1958 when they sailed right up to Alor Star. They were wooden boats, rather small and armed with a small gun. A friend laughed when I told him about my visit. We have come a long way since then and the Royal Malaysian Navy is now as modern a force as any other country.
11. I would have liked not buying the submarine. I don’t think we would be going to war. But the neighbours have bought submarines and our navy would feel rather inadequate if they don’t have at least two of these very costly vessels.
12. Altogether I would consider the 9th LIMA a success. Apart from the displays LIMA has helped initiate and stimulate Malaysia’s aerospace industry.
.
Salam Tun,
LIMA ’09 was great!! I agree with #2. But the turnout was not many – no adverts/promotions done to promote this international event.
Whoever the Malaysian leader/s who’s/re after you has/ve got serious Inferiority Complex Syndrome – always thinking to “cease” your legacy – like, stopping whatever that you started/did that clearly BENEFIT our country, “hoping” that it’ll stop people from remembering you as one of the World’s Greatest Statesman & be proud of you for putting Malaysia high up on the pedestal! WEIRDOS!!
May Allah SWT Continue to Bless You Always Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Wassalam.
* Btw Tun, I see that this topic doesn’t give much feedback HERE, because I think many of your fans gave their feedbacks in your Facebook. I’ve been giving feedbacks on Your Facebook quite frequently Nowadays, ie. more than I come here, FYI.
Whatever it is, hope your Admins/staff will Take Note from BOTH sites (here + Facebook), PLUS, any other sites that display your articles with feedbacks.
Cheers!

Dear Wok,
12. Truthfully, three quarters of the urbanites Malays are typically orang-orang kampong actually, who although are having Degrees, MBAs, and PhDs, are only fit to remain at their respective kampongs.
13. They say “Macam kera dapat bunga”
Answer;
You just showed the whole world your type of mentality frankly. So what if they are from kampong? Are you so uber high and perfect? I agree with your statements criticising Putrajaya, however it is a disgrace for you to bring yourself so high up – self admittance.
What type of people should not be considered ‘Orang Kampong’? Please do define what type of Malays should be categorised as Orang Bandar?
Trust me, there is someone who lives in a very small town. But has better mentality that those from Key-El. 🙂
Have a nice day.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
LIMA 09 dah abis, disusuli dengan skandal pertahanan negara yang amat memalukan, enjin jet pejuang kena cilok! Bukan satu tapi dua. Apa nak jadi?
Belum mengangkat senjata tapi dah tersungkur kerana wang!
Sekian Wasallam

Yang Dikasihi TUN & FAMILY,
The mere possession of a vision is not the same as living it, nor can we encourage others with it if we do not, ourselves, understand and follow its truths. The pattern of the Great Spirit is over us all, but if we follow our own spirits from within, our pattern becomes clearer. For centuries, others have sought their visions. They
prepare themselves, so that if the Creator desires them to know their life’s purpose, then a vision would be revealed. To be blessed with visions is not enough…we must live them! TERIMA KASIH SO MUCH!!!!

Yes, I have difficulty too in dealing with foreigners who do not communicate in English, but if we have the heart and will to communicate with them, there is a way. Your question on “However, the above countries and their people have excel tremendously WITHOUT ENGLISH. Why? How did they do it? What are their secrets? I leave it to the readers of this blog to give their opinions on this.”
The main reason is that these 2 countries are not colonised by any foreign powers in history.. Malaysia was colonised by England, and we are one of the representative in “Commonwealth”, English is the most important communication in ASEAN and the world.
Our blogger nj has voiced out for Satu Bangsa (One Nationality), Satu Negara (One Nation), Satu Bahasa (One Language), but in reality, majority of our Malaysians got mix up with Nationality and Race, and they do not know what to fill up in the Nationality Column. BM is the National Language, English is International Language, and as for Chinese, Tamil, Iban, Kadazans etc…. I think it’s better to remain as Mother Tongue Language due to the world communication landscape. Of which language we want to master, it will be better off for the people to choose the method for their communication agreed within themselves.
Hi-tech and expensive France Submarine is equivalent to LV and Gucci, and of course, to raise our patriotism and wealth of the country, how could our Defense Minister purchase something that will not look up by neigbouring country. Just imagine, we are invited for Ball function, and we do not have gown or tuxedo and we wear jeans and blouse instead, it will look weird right, Ayahanda Tun? Sometimes wealth (money) need to be spent to stimulate economic purpose, if semua orang kedekut, then what for we study and talk about Economic!!
Dear Tun,
I always have the following queries all the while for Malaysia’s industries.
1) What is the definition of a success industries?
a) As long as we can build something, whether it can be sell in the market?
b) A product that Malaysia company owns the rights and able to export or JV with other companies to roll out the product to make it a success to local and international market
c) A product that is being manufactured in Malaysia, and export to local or international market
d) the duration to keep repeating the building process, and not accepting failure
2) What is the primary goal to build an industry in Malaysia?
a) create more jobs for the people?
b) create more income for the government via tax?
c) help the local to build up the skillset
I wanted to understand which Malaysia companies or industries meet the above? From the Banks, Auto, Aerospace, Telcos, Oil and gas, SMI, tourism, etc..
and what is Government’s role in it? and are we all clear about the responsibility to our next generation?
In my opinion, i see the following:
1) Government only knows how to spend most of the time, but having limited capability to generate income for the Government, that’s why our deficit grows. Simple as that.
2) Everything is build from the fundamental, 1 brick by 1 brick, and are we building up multiple income resources for the country?(industries)
I see everyone fight for the power only. (same to PKR)
I think we are capitalized on the growth that is done in Tun’s period of time and idle for a long period of time. That is dangerous i guess for the future generation.
Assalamu Alaikum Tun,
I am proud to see Malaysian capability to organise such a world-class event as LIMA. But I am more proud to you because LIMA is your brainchild. Therefore, we need more Malaysian especially Malays that have futuristic thinking in every aspect.
Are we on the right track to create more creative and futuristic leaders for the sake of Malaysia’s survival to be always on par with other countries?
Langkawi Island, should not stop there on where it is today. They must implement new products and same time improve the quality of existing products to the Tourism Industrials. People don’t visit the same place that did not change after 10 years. If you don’t improve the place, people will change their place of visit.
1.Saya pernah 2 kali menghadiri pameran LIMA.Pada hemat saya
bertutur didalam bahasa ibunda kita.
8.Sungguh hairan apabila Kerajaan Malaysia dibawah pemerintahan Tun
Wassalam..
Salam Tun suami Isteri & fellowblogers CheDet,
This is the only navy in the world to have this type of big gun fitted to this small size of patrol boat, when firing, the boat will move a few meters backward”.
YABhg Tun,
omiosman, I’ve to agree with you on that old saying and I’d like to add…” no war, no money…no money, no peace!! Logical right..??
How can you have peace without money..?? and of course those damn War mongers Capitalist won’t let us have our peace….war is just too damn big a business!!
Salamunalaykum Tun and others.
I have traveled to the following countries and I faced difficulties in communicating with the locals as the MAJORITY OF THEM DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH :-
1. Japan.
2. Korea.
3. France.
4. China.
I dealt with the following people in Malaysia and I faced the same problem as the above as THEY WERE NOT PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH :-
1. A Japanese – He gave technical presentation in English which my colleagues and I could hardly understand. He is a technical people with technical background but he learned and applied his knowledge without using English.
2. A German – He came for a pre-delivery inspection (PDI) for a product. He is a technical people with technical background. He has difficulties in communicating with us in English.
However, the above countries and their people have excel tremendously WITHOUT ENGLISH. Why? How did they do it? What are their secrets?
I leave it to the readers of this blog to give their opinions on this.
GOD bless.

LIMA09 was a success indeed;
SUDAH 3 KALI sya KUNJUNGI LIMA. SUNGUH MENARIK dan GEMAR MELIHAT AKSI-AKSI PESAWAT TEMPUR DARI BERBAGAI JENIS YG MENGKAGUMKAN(F-16, F-18, MIG, SUKHOI DAN SEBAGAINYA).
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TETAPI TUN;
KENAPAKAH PERKHIDMATAN JET PEJUANG MIG-29 HENDAK DITAMATKAN DAN DILUPUSKAN DRPD PERKHIDMATAN TUDM. APAKAH MASAALAHNYA. APAKAH JET PEJUANG TERSEBUT SUDAH TIDAK SELAMAT LAGI. ATAU APAKAH ADA MAKSUD LAIN YG TERSIRAT.
ATAU MALAYSIA HENDAK BELI PESAWAT BARU BAGI MENGGANTIKAN MIG-29 ATAU KERANA MASAALAH PENYELENGGARAAN.
BUKANKAH MIG-29 HAMPIR SETARAF DENGAN F-16 DAN F-18(sumber Wikipedia).
*********NEGARA CINA MASIH MENGGUNAKAN MIG-21, MIG-23 KERANA KEBOLEHAN MEREKA MENYENGGARA DAN UPGRADE SENDIRI DENGAN BAIK MENGIKUT SPESIFIKASI YG MEREKA KEHENDAKI(sumber Wikipedia).*****
DEMIKIAN JUGA INDIA, NEGARA TELUK, NEGARA BEKAS JAJAHAN SOVIET dan bebera negara lain JUGA MASIH GUNAKAN MIG-29, KENAPA PULA KITA NAK LUPUSKAN ASSET NEGARA YANG MASIH BAIK(saya lihat di LIMA Langkawi, masih hebat lagi).
MIG-29 JARANG DIDENGAR GAGAL ATAU MENJUNAM JATUH AKIBAT KEROSAKAN, SEPERTI PESAWAT LAIN BUATAN BARAT YG NEGARA PERNAH MILIKI (Seprti Skyhawks, F-5E, Hawks, Tebuan, Pilatus, Nuri dan sebagainya).
ADA LEBIH BAIK NEGARA KITA MEMPUNYAI BANYAK BILANGAN PESAWAT TEMPUR DAN MELATIH RAMAI PILOT BERKEBOLEHAN DAN ANGGOTA TERLATIH YANG BOLEH MENYELENGARA PESAWAT DENGAN BAIK DARI BERBAGAI JENIS.
APAKAH PENYELENGGARAAN YANG DIKONTRAKKAN KEPADA PIHAK AIROD MENGHASILKAN PERKHIDMATAN YANG MEMUASKAN SEHINGGA PESAWAT TERSEBUT MENJADI KONDEM XBOLEH DIPERBAIKI LAGI DAN TERPAKSA diistiharkan SEBAGAI BARANGAN LUPUS.
DIHARAP TIDAK JADI MACAM KES MAINTENANCE PROTON PERDANA EKSEKUTIF KEGUNAN MENTERI YG HEBOH DIPERKATAN SEBELUM INI.!(ADA UNSUR TIDAK SIHAT). Zaman Sekarang unsur ini ada dimana-mana Tun.
Sebagai rakyat kebimbangan tetap ada Tun. Sayangkan Negara.
Wassallam.
Tun,
Tumpang lalu:
Saudara Eanisazman (Saudari Eanisazman?),
6. Akhir kata, cuba kamu tengok tandas-tandas kita; bukannya yang di kongsi dengan bangsa-bangsa lain seandainya kamu nak menuding jari kamu (which is typical of the kind of person you are).
Terima kasih, Tun, and may you and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah are in the care of Allah s.w.t. at all times.
Salam Tun,
Perkara 7.
Salam

Salam Tokdet,
Semoga sejahtera dengan kesihatan yang baik. I have no comments actually but just feeling a bit hurt with harsh statement made by some malay guys named ‘Wok’ who hate malay people especially kampung people as much as its sound. I am really not sure for what he actually mad at but I am ‘orang melayu kampung’ and I have the degree and if it is necessary to convince him by fist that I love my Melayu, believe me I would. “Kacang lupakan Kulit’… so you consider yourself mat bandar berlagak macam bagus telling the rest of your people to go back kampung so that you can eat in the Chinese or Israelis restaurant….you can talk to my hand….

Very interesting article indeed.
I know a friend who a “shopperholic”, this fellow never so home without end up buying something, often bought thing may not be useful, but the fellow just unable resist them temptation of buying something, sometime anything, then i can’t blame the fellow, the fellow is buying thing using own money, and did not neglect the family (that’s ok i think), maybe the fellow live a stressful life.

You Shall Be Prepared: A Divine Commandment
[8:60] YOU SHALL PREPARE FOR THEM ALL THE POWER YOU CAN MUSTER, AND ALL THE EQUIPMENT YOU CAN MOBILIZE, THAT YOU MAY FRIGHTEN THE ENEMIES OF GOD, YOUR ENEMIES, AS WELL AS OTHERS WHO ARE NOT KNOWN TO YOU; GOD knows them. Whatever you spend in the cause of GOD will be repaid to you generously, without the least injustice.
[8:61] IF THEY RESORT TO PEACE, SO SHALL YOU, AND PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of God, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly.

TUN & family,
Systems thinking is a discipline for seeing wholes. It is a framework for seeing interrelationships rather than things, for seeing patterns of change rather than static “snapshots.” It is a set of general principles — distilled over the course of the twentieth century, spanning fields as diverse as the physical and social sciences, engineering, and management…. During the last thirty years, these tools have been applied to understand a wide range of corporate, urban, regional, economic, political, ecological, and even psychological systems. And systems thinking is a sensibility — for the subtle interconnectedness that gives living systems their unique character.
Knowledge has three degrees — opinion, science, illumination. The means or instrument of the first is sense; of the second, dialectic; of the third, intuition.
Therefore, Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error.

My Respected TUN….
The men of experiment are like the ant, they only collect and use; the reasoners resemble spiders, who make cobwebs out of their own substance. But the bee takes the middle course: it gathers its material from the flowers of the garden and field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own. Not unlike this is the true business of philosophy (science); for it neither relies solely or chiefly on the powers of the mind, nor does it take the matter which it gathers from natural history and mechanical experiments and lay up in the memory whole, as it finds it, but lays it up in the understanding altered and disgested. Therefore, from a closer and purer league between these two faculties, the experimental and the rational (such as has never been made), much may be hoped.
When people thought the Earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together.
I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
This world, after all our science and sciences, is still a miracle; wonderful, inscrutable, magical and more, to whosoever will think of it.

Tun,
Really, I have seen a lot of operations manual in Thai and Indonesian language which is not available in our national language.
To mgpunya – I too do not believe in war but tell that to people who have ill intentions toward you.
An old Roman saying – si vis pacem, para bellum; If you wish peace, prepare for war.
Tun,
Sy tak putus2 baca post Tun setiap hari . . .

Tun,
“11. I would have liked not buying the submarine. I don’t think we would be going to war. But the neighbours have bought submarines and our navy would feel rather inadequate if they don’t have at least two of these very costly vessels.”
1. How poetic and irony is the above statement.
2. Look at what we have done to those
hope they would replace the nuri as fast as possible! Mig29N is only in service for 15 years. But Nuri, is depending on Mr Samy’s service period?
Salam kasih dan salam hormat Ayahanda Tun.
UMV are already in wide use these days Tun. Call it what ever they wish; drones, hunters, predators, RPV, UAV

Assalamualaikum Tun,
I have yet to go to see the LIMA but I am able to see it in tv. I think it is a good event so that Malaysia is recognized worldwide. It terms of the our Malaysian military, I think we should develop it in line with our progress in other areas. Although we are a peaceful country, we can see that the military can play a part to participate in peacekeeping mission under the UN. If we are strong enough we can also help other countries or people that need help. For example until to date, whenever the Palestinians are attacked by Israel, all the Islamic nations can do is only condemn Israel and shout out in the streets. After a while, it just cools down with the Israel walking away scot-free. This has been going on for years. To date, no effective strategy is being done by the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC)to really help the Palestinians. Islamic countries are still not united and weak. They are more concerned about themselves. To help the Palestinians, Islamic countries still rely on the US, which we know is controlled by the jews.
Thanks to your foresight Tun. LIMA is your brainchild just like PROTON, KLIA and many other national developments. You have emphasised the tangible and intangible benefits acrued therefrom. For one, there is so much technology involved and required us to catch up with.
To catch with up technology we need to muster English, the language of technology and life. In our day to day activities to go into the internet for example we need English otherwise we cannot fully benefit the cyber information.
To muster English is to enjoy the beauty and splendour of the language. One just can enjoy reading and to understand better life around us. I have for many years in keeping of Encylopedia Britannica. Now being able to go through a few volumes, I am amazed at the amount of knowledge the West have accumulated and the multitudes of discoveries made. I am humbled by the more I know the less I know.
Knowledge is power and that’s proven by their mastery over us from the depths of the ocean to the space beyond.
Our leaderships are acting in a way selfish for themselves. To a great extend they are depriving the younger generations to prepare themselves in whole-life learning from cradle to the grave. If they cannot think far enough ahead for the nation do not hold onto the posts.
The leaders cannot reconcile the constant contradictions of themselves in their speeches. Yes K-economy, yes life-long learning, yes we need to compete with West, so on and so on. English. They have been in and out of the country for umteenth times, could they see the shift in emphasis in language mastery towards English by the French, Japanese, Vietnamese , Indonesian …?
If they think the about-turn in PPSMI is Malayish and thus good for (Malay) votes then they have insulted the rakyat’s intelligence. If they were influenced by the opinion of a group of saterawans who think that they have the thickest Malay blood in them then they cannot shift between the shaft and the grain .
The other races are laughing for being nitty-gritty and numbskulls. “The Malays like to make life difficult for others” to quote Master Mariner Capt. Rivers aka Kadir.
Nothing to worry, these so called leaders have the means to send their children overseas for an English-based education! When the children come back they have the right(?) to be CEOs of GLCs and high government positions. Rightly so, the local trained are not competent in English and hence cannot go international.
Saya sebagai orang Melayu saya pohon maaf kapada Tun kerana “There are those who give over their lives to conviction and struggle and there are those who stand as critics on the sidelines; they could always do better, but they do nothing” to quote Alijah Gordon (1999) in her dedication page “The Real Cry of Syed Shaykh al-Hady” book, MSRI.
In retirement I am content with the fruits of your policy as Education Minister in the early 70s when Malays in masses were beginning to be sent overseas. Thank you Tun.
Did the Minister of Education went to LIMA?? Yaiyyy… he missed the show.. If not, he must have made another blunder by changing back to PPSMI tomorrow…. he, he…
My son just came back from his first internal motivational course for students going overseas, in Bangi. The organisers too mentioned about some stupid group of people who are against PPSMI. And.. the funny thing is that the Minister is turning a deaf ear…, as though he is the one who don’t like PPSMI.. hmm..Bila lah Melayu nak maju.

1. We are indeed very honoured to have Tun onboard our first Malaysian Submarine, KD TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN during LIMA 09 in Langkawi. The captain and I were very impressed with Tun
Tun,
I was there after Form 5 (1978).
After 31 years, I was back there again on 4-6 December 2009.
While ‘touring’ the island, I told a lengthy story to my 2 teenage children about you and Langkawi.
I am amazed to see what you have done to Langkawi.
Regards,

YABhg Tun,
All those are War Machines…
Sorry Sir, I do not believe in War !!!
Salam..
Dear Tun,
What’s more impressive is the participation from the Singapore Defense who had made their debut here in LIMA 09.
Correct me if I’m wrong..
Salam Tun,
Indeed LIMA will always be one of your greatest legacy for the people of Langkawi. Over the years, it has boosted up the Tourism industry as well.
Thank you so very much Tun
Dear TUN
Tok Det,
I think we can relate your point no. 7 to something… ;p It is very true when we bought something from outside, we rarely ask them to translate them to our own language as it will cause problem and costs more money. And that’s why learning foreign language, basically English in term of Science and Technology is important.
May Allah bless you and your family Tok Det..
Wassalam…
Salam Tun….

(Bernama) – Malaysians have an extremely important role of mastering English to acquire knowledge at a faster pace to ensure there is no ‘re-colonisation’ of the country, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Without a good command of English, the former prime minister noted, the people would not acquire knowledge quickly.
He said this would, in turn, open doors to those knowledgeable to dominate and influence them, either directly or indirectly.
“English is the language of the Knowledge Age. Countries which do not master English will not only be left behind but risk being colonised, either directly or indirectly.
“Without knowledge, countries will be oppressed and even invaded,” Dr Mahathir told reporters after delivering his keynote address entitled, ‘The Leadership and Policy Components for the Knowledge Society: A Proposed Best Practice for Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member countries at the 17th Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS) conference.
The conference was opened by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at a hotel near here.
The four-day conference which began today, is jointly organised by IAS, Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) and International Islamic Academy of Life Sciences and Biotechnology.
Mahathir said that only by mastering English, could the people in this country acquire knowledge at a faster pace so as not to be left behind by development.
He said, the people would not lose their identity by seeking knowledge in English.
“English is not only for English people but (it is) a universal language. I am not an Englishman but I speak English,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mahathir said the current leadership was “ignoring success” by abolishing the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) and reverting to Bahasa Malaysia.
“I don’t think the government understands the importance of English as a language of knowledge when they decided to switch from English to Malay (in teaching Science and Mathematics),” he said.
Recently, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government had decided to reverse the PPSMI policy and revert to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools, and Chinese and Tamil in vernacular schools from 2012.
The PPSMI policy was implemented in phases, beginning with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003, under Dr Mahathir’s administration.
Earlier, when delivering his keynote address, Mahathir said knowledge was expanding rapidly, especially in science, and books and writings on this subject were in English.
He said that possibilities are there to override past beliefs in the field of science, which cannot be done in geography and history.
“Knowledge in science is not static unlike geography and history where facts are structured and limited.
“In science, we can always go back and question the scientific principles and decide whether they are right or not,” he said, adding new discoveries are coming out in torrents in English.
Despite the lower participation, LIMA09 was a success indeed. I just wished the stakeholders ie. hotels, car rentals, retail outlets, etc. would consider not hiking their prices up by a tenfold in the future. Perhaps the Europeans and the Westerners can afford it, but the locals still earn in Ringgit.
Thanks and regards,
Shukor Z. Abidin
