BARRY WAIN

1. After the forum held by the University of Malaya to discuss the book by Barry Wain entitled "Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times", during which I was condemned for all kinds of misdeeds, many have asked me to sue the author. In fact even before the book was allowed to be sold in Malaysia, many who took exception to Barry Wain’s vilification of my stint as the Prime Minister of Malaysia, many, including the Press have asked me to sue the author.

2. My view is that a politician must accept all the opinions for or against him as normal. They go with the job.

3. I am leery of politicians who sue their critics. I suspect that what they want is to make the issue sub-judice so as to prevent the critics from attacking them on the issue. This is a cowardly move and in fact proves that the criticisms are fully justified.

4. A politician who is convinced of his own integrity and innocence should be able to fend off the attacks by proving that they have no basis in fact. It is up to the people, after hearing both sides to decide on the matter. Shutting the mouth of the critics by abusing the authority of the court of law is no better than Governments which censor or shut down papers which are critical of them. Those who resort to this trick to shut the mouths of their critics are in fact showing the kind of leader they would make if they come to power.

5. Malaysians should be discerning enough to recognise such politicians who are fond of accusing others of misdeeds but who are in fact already abusing whatever little power they may have at their disposal.

6. Barry Wain and his people can say what they like. The people in this country can decide whether it is just arrogance or whether their accusations are what they say they are. I will have my say if I think it necessary.

  2. Salam TUN,
    BARRY WAIN’S MISADVENTURE.
As of 2008,Harry Potter books have sold over 400 million copies(various titles included) and have been translated into 69 languages.
It has made V.K Rowling a billionaire by writting books.
Barry Wain’s Malaysian Marverick managed an estimate of 20,000 copies and soon to be translated into Bahasa Malaysia.
The luke warm reception is just like the saying’selling ice to the eskimos.
A business venture that definately went awry.

  3. your actions put most christians to shame…turning the other cheek is truly apostolic.

// I acknowledge Tun Dr Mahathir achievements in transforming Malaysia into what it is today, but Malaysia would have been at par with South Korea today or even better if we were more democratic ///
    dear bobo,
This is a brief history of South Korea after its formation in 1948.
It started of as a democracy ruled by right wing leader Syngman Rhee during which in 1950 the North Korean invaded South Korea starting the famous Korean War that took the lives of 2.5 million people. The North Korean retreated in 1953 .Syngman Rhee resumed his autocratic rule until 1960 when student’s uprising forced him to resign. In 1961 Park Chung Hee staged a coup d’etat against the weak and ineffectual Govt that succeeded Syngman Rhee.Park ruled until 1979 when he was assasinated.Park was criticised as a ruthless military dictator running a repressive regime. But during his 19 years of iron fisted rule he succeeded in transforming South Korea into a significant and rapid export led economy.Interim Govt of Choi Gyn Ha was immediately taken over in 1980 by another coup d’etat now led by General Chun Doh Hwan a despotic ruler who continued the legacy of repressive regimes that suppressed pro democracy movements violently. He was eventually ousted by a nationwide protest sparked by an incident of a student tortured to death by the regime in 1987.
By this time South Korea has already established itself as a newly industrialised economy and a respected economic powerhouse. In 1982 Tun Mahathir had chosen South Korea (while it is still ruled by a repressve regime)and Japan to be the nations Malaysia want to emulate in its Look East Policy.
South Korea only became a successful liberal democracy since 1987 that is after 27 years of repressive regimes of military dictatorship. The perpetual threat posed by North Korea motivated the Koreans to be strong and the repressive regimes gave them the discipline to work towards that objective. The democracy they are enjoying now is only a luxury they have earned after all the sacrifice and hardwork .
I leave you to your own conclusions.
    Thanks Tun.

    Dear Umarr/Bobo
Samuraimelayu was there in his late thirties, don’t you think he knows what he is talking about?Does samuraimelayu sound like one who can tolerate repressive regimes without a fight?I was there too in my twenties and very much like samuraimelayu. But I must assure you that Mahathir was anything but repressive. It was that awesome democracy during the UMNO presidency election I have witnessed that reversed all my earlier perception I had of him in my student days.
But the situation then was bad,our economy was experiencing a terrible recession and was at the brink of bankruptcy. The only way to take us out of the mess was to provide political stability in order to keep whatever investments we already have from taking flight. As usual anywhere during extreme bad economic situation like this, ambitious politicians see opportunity to take over.Musa jv with Ku Li to topple Tun.And the rivalry was so intensed.
UMNO was declared illegal and dissolved.UMNO was divided into two-New UMNO and S46…and singlehandedly Mahathir had to counter one court case to the other and it was so exhausting even for us as observers. The Malays were never so divided or weakened in their history.
From the external side the Dong Jiong were pushing for more demands, and DAP being a political party will not want to let go this once in a lifetime opportunity to champion these demands to win the Chinese support at a time Mahathir was seen to be at his weakest. The media in the meanwhile was fast to cash out with inflammatory issues that worsen matters..Things were getting out of hand..
Qstn for Bobo-Do you think letting democracy prevail even at the expense of our political stability and keeping investors at the time we needed the capital, the right thing to do? Can we catch up with Korea if the racial tensions within the country is not arrested? If you are an investor would you bring in your hard earned cash to a country at a brink of a civil war? That this tension in 1987 was real, and heading for that 5-13 repeat and not just an excuse, that samuraimelayu and I were living witnesses?
I do not think I can change your mind but all I want you to know is that Tun is far from repressive. It was only during Tun’s time that we see everybody so freely accusing Tun of corruption lah, this lah,in public and can get away with it.If the racial makeup of Malaysia had been different or the maturity level of Malaysians then have risen to present day level ,and we can afford more freedom risk,I believe Tun would surely have no problem supporting full democracy…But at that time business must come first if we want to catch up with S Korea.
Thanks Tun-you are not a dictator only that your people were yesmen! Not entirely your fault.

  7. Salam Tun & Keluarga,
    Saya tetap Sokong Tun sepenuhnya.

  8. Dear Tun,
    Well said indeed. Very eloquent.
We know very well who these politicians are who abuses the courts of justice to KILL OFF the opposition to maintain a ONE PARTY SYSTEM. Read The Little Middle Kingdom.
There are even some here who are trying to copy this unhealthy practice.
Barry Wain can write whatever he wants but we the people of MALAYSIA who loves this country to the core knowns best who Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad really is.
Hate you or Love you…it is very much evident for all to see the growth, development and progress that Tun had lead Malaysia to.
As Tun mentioned, its natural for politicians to be hated and adored. You can’t please them all.
But he counts for alot, when he has made the Nations equal or even better amongst the other nations of the world whether in physical development, economic progress, financial stability, peace, etc…
    Kudos to the you Tun.
May Allah bless you in this world and the hereafter.

  9. To samuraimelayu
It’s always convenient to claim that all repressive actions made by leaders were meant to prevent another 5/13. It is like telling your children to avoid that one room in the house because there are “ghosts” in there. It is also like our honourable former Home Minister detaining a journalist under the ISA for her own protection. It is ridiculous.
Do you not realise that repressive actions were made by those in power to silence opponents in order to stay in power? I acknowledge Tun Dr. Mahathir’s achievements in tranforming Malaysia into what it is today, but Malaysia would have been on par with South Korea today or even better if we were more democratic and if we had better nurtured human capital instead of chasing away the brains and talent of this country to others who appreciate them.
I believe that people power is the key to success in any country. That’s why Thailand and Indonesia will one day overtake us in competitiveness because their people know their rights and are no longer prepared to let politicians control them, and abuse their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Take democratic South Korea for example. They are a very successful country compared to their communist neighbours North Korea.
And by the way, my earlier comment was only to point out the irony in Dr Mahathir’s blog post considering his policies during his time in office.
    Umar.

  10. Dear Tun,
You don’t have to react, rebuke or sueing the writer for writing what they wrote in the book. It is just an opinion from an alien who doesn’t know head or tail about socio-economics and culture in Malaysia. This guy thought Malaysia is United States of America or England or Germany. He failed to see that Malaysia is still a developing country where majority of its population in reality still earning below $1,000 per capita. All actions and decisions made were taken all based socio-economics prudents!

Well, I was not even born in 1987 (but I wasn’t born yesterday either), but I know during “Ops Lalang”, The Star and a few other newspapers had their licenses withdrawn or shut down for being critical of the government.
Please don’t try to insult our intelligence.
    MR. BOBO,
WE WERE IN OUR LATE 30s DURING ‘OPS LALANG’ AND WAS AMONGST THE RADICAL CRITICS OF AYAHANDA TUN EARLY YEARS OF ‘DICTATORIAL’ PREMIERSHIP…SO WE THOUGHT.
BUT AS WE GREW OLDER WITH THE NATION BUILDING WHICH WAS LATER RECOGNIZED AS THE MOST PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPING NATION IN THE WORLD, WE FINALLY SAW PEACE, PROSPERITY AND HARMONY IN THIS BLESSED COUNTRY OF TRULY MALAYSIANS…
AND THE DAYS OF KETUPAT AND RENDANG , MURUKU AND WADDE, MANDARIN ORANGES AND ANGPOW WERE NEVER FORGOTTEN BY THE RAKYAT COMES KONGSI RAYA FESTIVES…OH, HOW WE MISSED THOSE HAPPY DAYS!
THEN WE REALISED THAT IF SUCH ACTIONS UNDER THE DRACONIAN ACT HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN, THE NATION WUD HAVE CHARTED ANOTHER ‘5/13’ IN THE HISTORY BOOKS INSTEAD!
AND PERHAPS, MR. BOBO AIN’T HERE AND ‘SG LALANG’ WUD HAVE BEEN A GLOOMY MASS-BURIAL SITE INSTEAD OF A BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPED MEMORIAL PARK…IF ONLY?
AND A BOBO INTELLIGENCE WUD NEVER HAVE BEEN INSULTED!
YES, THIS SA’MURAI’ WUD HAVE BEEN A ‘FRIED BIRD’ IN THE KAMUNTING CAMPS.
‘K.A.M.I.(KITA ANAK MALAYSIA INSAF) TIDAK MUDAH LUPA’…AND DID NOT FORGET TO ADMIT THAT WE HAD INSULTED OUR OWN INTELLIGENCE.
    ALFATIHAH, AMIN.

  14. Tun
If you feel there is a strong case for you to sue the author of the book by Barry Wain, all the more you should sue him. If you are afraid people might think you will be favoured if the lawsuit takes place in Malaysia, sue him outside Malaysia or take him to the international court. What is deemed wrong, you need to put right and that should be way it should go. By assuming no action taken by you, everything will be forgotten. Take a leaf from LKY, Tun.

  15. salam sejahtera pada tun ,
peduli kan apa org gile tu nak kata. nak mencari salah org cukup senang nak cari salah sendiri masih tak sedar diri. jgn di layan org seperti nie kalau lebih2 baru bagi sekepuk depan muka dia.

  16. Let’s look at the other side of the coin for now. One has to ask if there is a lot of truth to the writings of Barry Wain. Why didn’t Dr M sue? Is it because there is a lot more truth to it that suing would only open up a bigger can of worms when the world discover where Barry gets his information from? There has to be people in Dr.M’s former circle who gave these information or have loose lips for this book to be written. Maybe there are people who has a vendetta against their former boss. Maybe there are some people who waited until Dr.M is out of power and can’t get to them now before divulging these information to Barry. Whatever it is, people will never know the truth as only Dr. M knows. If he is clean, he can sleep well. If not, he will know the day will come. Remember that it is easier for humans to tell the truth than keep and tell a lie.

  17. Salam Tun DM,
suing him will only give him the needed publicity for him to increase his sales. By not suing, Tun DM has taken a good tactical move. Anyway, who is Barry Wain?
Barry Wain can still be sued even thugh he is in Singapore, it is up to him to defend the case by entering an appearance in the court of Malaysia. But having no assets (assuming) in Malaysia, the judgment is just a paper judgement and he too would avoid entering Malaysia to fustrate the judgement. He thought he is smarter, but by not suing him, Tun DM has surely outsmarted him. Further, as politician (as stated by Tun), getting good and bad remarks are part of the job and goes with the job. By suing, it only justifies the truth of what is being said. The best is to let the people to decide. It shows that Tun DM is open to criticisms – good or bad. It also shows that Tun DM is capable of dodging bullets and would not allow Barry Wain to trap him into playing Barry Wain’s game. I bet, Barry Wain cannot now dodges Tun DM’s bullet and the pain is seeping deep in him.

  18. “If you understand who you are and respect yourself, you will not see criticism as a problem but as an opportunity to become a better person. When you feel inadequate or imperfect, the criticism is threatening and makes you feel that you have to defend yourself. When you are secure–not perfect, but secure–you can listen to the criticism and consider its value.”

  25. Tun; Salam Sejahtera.
    Xkenalkan Barry wain..???
Sekian. Semoga Tun diberi ilham & petunjuk.

  26. Dearest Tun,
You are above him, no need to sue. For all we know that is what he wants, more publicity for him.
You have been the best PM of this country and around the region. And personally, I most admire your vision and drive towards making this country great and noted elsewhere globally. Many of us have benefited from your leadership and Barry Wain reaping money from selling your stories..
Ribuan terima kasih to you and family.
    Salam and take care.

  27. Salam Tun & Fellow CheDet’s bloggers,
“The world is nothing” is the statement of the wisemen. Those who accept this word of wisdom will have absolute inner peace of mind during his life. To Allah, what we have in this world is really nothing to Allah. Ask as much as you want, even Allah will give much more even you do not ask for it.
As the leader Tun has been entrusted to lead the way for the nation. There were a lot of balancing acts need to be performed as you definitely cannot satisfy everybody. It was not therefore a simple task but somebody have to do it and to me you have done an excellent job with many great things, YOUR WAY that we all should be proud of. Of course, as a human, nobody is perfect. We all should accept that.
As a Muslim, we must accept the fact that “The real judgement will be done in Akhirat where as a leader or any leader, you as the “pengembala” will be asked to report about the condition of your “pengembalaan”. That will be the time one would wish that they, if given the second chance, do not wish to become a leader who will have great responsibilities on his shoulders. That is the reason why in Islam one should not ask for a position but once appointed one cannot refuse. Think about it.
For those who only know how to critise, be aware. You offer nothing but misery to your ownself. What a pity!
May Allah show us all the right ways which Allah redha.

  28. Salam Tun yang dikasihi,
Tun masih tetap PM dihati dan minda saya. Tiada siapa dapat menggantikannya….
As for barry coward (for not having the courage to write a book on LKY), orang2 macam nih memang cakap jer banyak, biasa la macam tin kosong… Tapi dia sendiri mengaku yang Tun is one of the most outstanding and fascinating leaders of SEA and a person with really strong ideas. I agree with him on this part!

  29. Salam Tun M,
    You’re a GREAT leader!
“Leadership is like a tea bag, because you never know how strong it is until you put it in hot water”
..and so many times you’ve been tested. No sweat!! 😀

  30. Tokdet and Bloggers,
I hereby condemn Barry whatever and his people whatever. May Allah bless you with good health and prosperity… Thank you for what you have done to the Malaysian.
P/s: That parasit already collected tons of money for his misdeed. Well, it is so obvious but immorall..Of course how do he care…

  31. Maybe these people don’t understand, to sue Barry you have to do it at Singapore court, this court will follow the law 100%. So far from what I’ve read Barry uses facts that are available to the public.
If you cannot prove the fact false what you want to sue him for.
Sue him for printing the truth.
I recommend most of you to read the book first. It is a well balanced booked, he did praise Tun for being a maverick and bringing Malaysia into the modern age. And he also critic some of Tun’s action.
Nobody is perfect, people make mistakes but they must also own up to the mistake.

  32. tun, eventhough you are no longer a pm but people still like to say and write about you. you are a popular target of opposition parties, short minded politicians, racists as well as foreigners who are friends of zionist and enemies of this country. blackhearted Berry Wine is one of them. these are because during your time as the pm, u had done so much for the country. during your tenure, BN secured support from people and majority of them are proud and happy of this country. as for this blackhearted berry wain, i guest he is paid by either zionist or foreign government agents who do not want a leader like you to take charge of this country.

  33. Salam Tun,
I hardly know the author called Barry Wain.Perhaps others also know less about him before this. Though i recommend that he writes other stuffs. Most Malaysians dont read that much. If he want to strike gold with his writtings, try write children story books like Harry Porter. He might ended up as a billionaire. Besides, Barry Wain is not good name for an author. It really suits if it comes from a farmer.
    Ntahapahapantah.

  34. Tun M,
I read with interest the news today whereby Tun indicated at the function in Terengganu that DSN is enjoying high popularity based on the polls undertaken by Merdeka Centre. Frankly Tun, I would take the poll results with a “pinch of salt.” The number of respondents in the polls is only 1,400 and what about the demographics of the respondents? My concern is with regards to a high percentage of the unemployed who were respondents to this poll.
Based on what I was told about the people behind the Merdeka Centre, I reserve my comments but from information that I received from friends whose companies conducts research and consumer surveys says that they would not touch Merdeka Centre even with a “10 ft pole.” The reason, the credibility of their findings that is highly questinable.
I am far from being paranoid but perhaps this is a just a ploy i.e. a psychological warfare that certain quarters in the opposition wants DSN to feel good about his policies or perhaps there are those in BN who wish to create a situation that would lead to the downfall of DSN.

  36. Salam Tun Mahathir,
I wish more politicians realize this before they decide to embark into the vocation.
If one cannot accept public scrutiny and criticism, then just be like me – post in forums behind a veil.
PS: I don’t think you’re the best politician in the world, i just think the rest are rubbish!

  37. Assalamualaikum Tun.
Haiyaa…lagi mistake tunggu kat salah tempat.Nampak gayanya lain kali kena pikir pelan lain pulaklah.Pagi 14 Jun tak nampak havoc pun.Betul kata Harris Riady Mokhtar.
Ramai nak beli buku Malaysian Maverick ni.Tak keluar lagi dah datang tanya kat kedai buku.
Tu kata Barry Mabuk (wain).Macam tagline tv, Kata Kau!
    Bukan luak pun.
    Terima kasih Tun.

  38. There are many Barry Wains around. If Tun were to entertain these species, then the country would move ten steps backward. The students and the younger generation should take heed from Tun’s remark. Tun is saying “get up and move!” We need to learn from Tun that we need to set our priorities right.

  39. Good morning Ayahanda Tun,
I decided not to buy Malaysia Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad In Turbulence Time, and it costs RM99.80.
WOW, Mahal-nya…..and I am not a politician nor an investor…so I don’t find the need to buy such book….
Barry Wain has 37 years of Practical experiences in Asia Economics with richful Strong Theorectical Foundation in Journalism, I think what he wrote might be true based on his 37 years experiences, through PAL (Pause And Learn) and KSW (Knowledge Sharing Workshop) in comparing Malaysia with Singapore, South Korea and Japan.
He described Mahathir Mohamad, an Indian PLUS Melayu Blood, the pragmatic 4th Prime Minister of Maverick Malaysia:-
    1. dealing with things in a practical rather than theoretical way.
    2. relating to philosophical or political pragmatism
Wain also decribed Mahathir Mohamad a repressive 4th PM, I guess he refers to how DSAI was charged and sent into jail for ISA and Corruptions.
Barry Wain knew the truth, Ayahanda Tun, and all Non-Maverick Malaysians knew the truth.
The 1997 financial crisis occured base on Geroge Soros, (not George Bush Jr, k) statement of: 1/2 full or 1/2 empty glass of water, and in 2007, many of those who scored high as copy cats, I guess today either they are Rich Dad or Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki whose mother is a Hawaiian, the Pearl Habour (chinese characters for Pearl is Chu – written as Sun on left, Moon on Right, and the Father is the Japanese who worked day and night “mendatar” base on loyalty).
Rich Dad Poor Dad is the Best Selling books in 2007, if the readers understand the accounting terms and Robert’s Sales and Marketing experiences with strong theorectical foundation in Accountancy, they may be Rich Dad in below the next economic cycle adjustment or crisis.
Today, non-Maverick Malaysians in private and government sectors, are watching helplessly and happily the TRANSITION PERIOD of Rich Dad, the Government Link Companies (GLCs) for example , is gradually replacing Poor Dad, the Goverment Owned Companies due to democracy and basic human rights. Remarks: Singapore does not have GLCs, and the Government is the Rich Dad to Replace Poor Dad no matter what happens in future.
In 2008, Mr Warren Buffett, an American of the Statue of Liberty kind, not British nor European, has forseen the future and the globe opportunities with:-
    1. Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful
    2. Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy
In world news, EU’s Greece Government is bankrupted, London Parliament has 3 parties, Israel Attack, Pope asked for God Forgiveness for those Catholic priests were found guilty of raping children, Japan’s NAOTO KAN-san claimed that Japan Economy’s GDP is 200% now. People’s Republic of China, Communist Central Goverment does not back up Iran on Nuclear Treaty apanama….
In order to beat, not copy cat of, George Soros, and USA is now under the leadership of the 44th President of United States, 1st Black President, Mr Barrack Obama, Mr WARREN BUFFETT believes that this is the best time to buy troubled global companies eg:- BP increased its cost to double or 2 times due to the current crisis of the oil spilling in Mexican Gulf, and according to CIA Intelligence, Columbia is supected of illegall oils dealing in supply and demand. Note: Barrack has 7 alphabets, not 6 alphabets as spelled by some main media owners aka maverick media.
//6. Barry Wain and his people can say what they like. The people in this country can decide whether it is just arrogance or whether their accusations are what they say they are. I will have my say if I think it necessary.//

Dr M: Make sports betting legal
KUALA TERENGGANU: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has given his backing to a proposal to issue licences for sports betting, saying that this will help legalise the industry as well as thwart illegal gambling.
He slammed opposition leaders for protesting against the issuance, claiming that they were just trying to gain political mileage.

… you should sue the author IF you think he has tarnished your image unjustifiably.
IF the author loses, he will be financially burdened and will not dare to do the same unto others. This will serve him a lesson. (in the event he loses, you can waive the right to monetary compensation from the accused, IF you feel that you dont need this, but nevertheless the world will know that the author speaks rubbish).
Thus you should sue them IF what is written in the book amounts to defamation and blatant lies.
We know that being a politician is not easy with so many of those wanting your out and you will have to defend yourself, IF you are clear with your conscience of ultimately doing good for the country.
However, IF you feel what is written in the book is unjustified, we will support you if you sue them. Had you not done so, some will say that what is written is true, and that is why you do not want to sue them because it will open up more unwanted issues/secrets to surface. ///
AZ, do you know how many IFs you had used in that one post? Many BIG IFs. So, you should be able to draw your own conclusion IF Tun dare not sue Barry Wain.

  41. dear tun,
after reading this, one name ring a bell, that a.i or better known as anwar ibrahim or artificial intelligence.
and still there are people who support him, especially people with little or no information.
please people get your facts right, don’t blindly listen to people, don’t judge by emotion, investigate or your life will be manipulate by people like a.i.

  42. Salam Tun,
terbace ulasan Tun kt Utusan pg td psl Barry Wain…yg Tun x kn saman dia, alasan Tun..Seorg pengamal politik yg menyaman pengkritik dia adalah pengecut…it’s really amaze me…You are really the man…skrg menambah kn lg mcm2 rse sy pd Tun..hikss…sy sgt2 kagum & sayang pd Tun..semoga d murah kn rezeki Tun & d pjg kn usia..smpi kn salam sy pd Dr Hasmah..

  43. I agree with Tun that “Barry Wain and his people can say what they like.” After all, who is Barry Wain? More important to a Muslim is what Allah thinks. And for non-Muslims like me, I believe in the spiritual law of cause-and-effect, also called karma, that is recorded in every individual’s Akashic Records.
Generally, I would think that it is a blessing to be a doctor and a curse to be a politician, although this need not necessarily be true, a good example being Nik Aziz.

  44. Dear Tun,
From involving deeply in your writing I discover that you are in fact a kind hearted and courageous person. These 2 characteristics normally come together in a person. Contrary to some people’s belief, you are not intolerant, authoritarian or dictatorial at all. You tolerate dissent.
You have to commit some trouble makers or potential trouble makers to ISA in the course of your duty as Prime Minister when police intelligence recommended as such. Otherwise you would be a feeble leader.
In islam, the concept of para sahabat or companions of the prophet is very important. Your many pronouncements on this issue like ‘it is better to work with the devil you know than the angel you dont know’. Your detractor has branded you as practising favouritism, nepotism and cronism. It is stated that the prophet named ten companions as qualified for paradise ‘asharatul mubashira’. They were abu bakar, omar, uthman, ali, abu ubaidah, talha bin ubaidullah, Zubair bin Al-Awwaam, abdul rahman bin awf, sa’d bin abi waqqas, and saeed bin abi waqqas. Now favouring friends is considered wrong whereas the opposition themselves widely practise favouritism.
The Prophet did not name his successor, not because he was not decisive but he was being democratic or rather he let God decide. The ensuing development saw Abu Bakar as the successor to the Prophet. Likewise you had many deputies and you chose the one with the best character and sound religious background, Abdullah Badawi, to succeed you. You did your best. On hind sight nobody can blame you. History would judge you fairly and absolve you of any blame. Inspite of what others may say or your personal qualms, dont ever regret choosing Pak Lah to eventually succeed you. Allah knows.

  45. wooow….itulan Tun M yg pernah saya kenal…tidak peduli apa org hina…beliau akan menasihati org2 yg menghinanye dgn cara tersendiri hingga org2 itu pasti akan tersipu malu…

  46. Salam Tun.
The jobless teetotaler Barry ‘cheap’ Wine/Wain (previous employers Asian Wall Street Journal & Asia Week closed shop) been trying hard to make ends meet by doing freelance, without success. He later decided to forget the moral principles of journalism which he pretended to practice all along, and it’ll be most beneficial (and the returns will be instant) to just show his true self by writing nonsensical lies & slanders which are so easy to write, and fools always love to read & believe them.
The cheap Wine/Wain chose Dr. M because the latter’s outspokenness are causing sleepless nights to undeserving opportunists & certain groups alike. They’re willing to offer big sums to the cheap Wine/Wain to publish the rubbish! Besides, the cheap Wine/Wain hope to ride on Dr. M’s popularity to get cheap publicity! He’s just following the footsteps of Ian Chin & Tawfik Ismail.
It’s not possible for a downtrodden Aussie to have access to our govt documents unless,
    1. he’s writing lies, or
    2. he’s given half-truths by agents of the PKR adviser and/or ex-PM Pak Dol.

  47. Dear Tun Dr M,
Being a VIP, will mean the person is in a very delicate and vulnerable state. There are so many out there waiting to make quick bucks at the expense of the said personalities’ image, credentials & popularity.
The tragic death of the former Princess Of Wales, Lady Diana, which was an extreme example of people (Paparazzi) highly desperate of making quick bucks out of another’s image and vulnerability.
The Public figures concerned should (whether tolerate it or not) have their mouth sealed & ears turned deaf to their critics and to those who slander them.
However, powerful public figures might resort to retaliation or punishment behind the scenes. It could be accepted as justified if those people are not telling the truth and all their criticisms are pure fabrication of facts and their motive have full element of malice. However, the indirect retaliations of the powerful public figure should be intended to deter the critics to criticize further and it should be more than that.
On the other hand, some of the critics could be genuine and have positive purpose in their criticisms. Normally these critics are (were) close to the public figure or an acquaintance of a person close to public figure. In this situation, the public figure will be in a quandary as to what to do. Well it is a “Million Dollar question”. I would presume, the public figure concerned would weigh the subject matter from various point of view rationally and act wisely with little damage to himself and to the others.
I conclude that the ethics, duty of care and professionalism is on the decline around the globe.

  48. Dear Tun,
they say- in ancient war, the most dangerous place is the safest. The best advice is from your enemy

  49. a very good thought Tun..
i remember a long time ago, a well known politician used to ‘melatah’ by applying court injunction against a publishment of book entitled ‘ 50 dalil why lord darth ‘backside’ vader cannot be PM’ written by some idiot. suddenly the act made the crap justified itself. seriously phetatic.
and suddenly he gained lot follower trailing his back with full load of symphaty. thats even more phetatic. make sure he doesnt trail ur back for return!.

  50. Dearest YAB Tun,
    WELL SAID TUN!
Only cowards would try to prevent others from CRITICIZING them.
On the other hand, I still believe that Tun should sue Barry Wain for TELLING LIES about Tun. Unfortunately NOT EVERYONE is SMART ENOUGH to differentiate between FACTS and LIES.
    Thanks Tun.
** May Allah SWT bless Tun & family **

  51. Assalamualaikum Tun,
All the best wishes to you & Family. May Allah the Almighty prolong your life further to serve the ummah and people of the world as it is supposed to be served and advised just as you are doing now and then irregardless whether you’re in politic or not.
What I would like to say here is that I am always feeling confidence and not afraid of being sued by you when posting my personal views and made comments which may affect you personally. This is what I called true democracy & meritrocacy. Unlike in Singapore I must be very careful before I speak out and have that funny feeling which is hard to explain e.g feeling very tight inside when wanting to express. Unlike in your blog I have a special feeling of freedom of speech and simply write what is flowing out from my mind and heart.
Thank you Tun for given me this opportunity allowing me to be able to “Just simply Let Go” and have confidence in myself to express.
    wasalam.

  52. Tun,
I already bought this book and almost finish reading it. Is it true like what Barry Wain had stated?
I also would like to apologize to you on behalf of Malay comunity in Terengganu. My dad and I had attended your speeches this morning in Kuala Terengganu. I really upset with Malays because they does not care about you. I think it was such a humiliation to our own races. Once again I would like to apologize.

  53. Dear Tun
Sue or not to sue? Sue ,that means Wain may be lying and Tun can make some easy money for compensation, don’t sue that means all these allegations maybe true afterall.I really hate to be in your shoes.
But you are not the kind to be influenced by what other people think, only what you believe is the right thing to do.If you say let it be than let it be ,you are the boss. The only people who don’t make mistakes are those who don’t do anything at all.You have done a lot of great things and we know you can make some great mistakes too and maybe you have. But what is important is that you have not allowed the mistakes go in vain and have squared of.You have become a better leader to do your job better.
I am ever grateful to God for giving the opportunity to have experienced and enjoyed your administration very much.I’ll never forget all the tense moments and the dramatics in your political battles-with Musa/Razaleigh and Karpal/Kit Siang in 1987 and with Anwar/Speculators in 1998 and how relief I am everytime you came out victorious and unscathed. And the last drama from you is of course that ‘dah lama dah’ episode when you panicked us all with your resignation announcement.Oh how I miss such dramatics again. Will there ever be again?
Doesn’t matter what Wain say or think about you ,I will love and appreciate you just the same. All the things that make me proud being Malaysian have your trade mark in them.Thank you sir.God bless you.

    Current Score:
    Mahathir: 1
    Barry Who?: 0
    Anwar Ibrahim: 0

  56. Syabas, Tun! You are just great!!
Don’t give them a damn. You had done what is right for the country. The rest leave it to history whether to acknowledge your contribution or otherwise. Period.
Barry Wain! Who is he? BADUT ke?

  58. Dear Tun,
Your attitude towards Barry Wain is commendable and exemplary. I am reading the book one third already. Most of what is written are known facts. I agree with Tun, some politicians resorts to sueing rm100 million anybody who mentions about the on going court case.
When you have this blog, I believe at any one time those who visit your blog is 1000 times more than the commenters. From the comments you can imagine all kinds of people; some are kaki bodek and kerak, some belligerent, some try to bully fellow commenters, some are forever opposing, some are sensible. It takes all sorts to make the world. But you are the leader. You expound your ideas which are stimulating, challenging and absolutely beneficial to Malaysians. It encouranges many to try their hands in writing and stimulate their thinking.
Frankly commenting in your blog is addictive.
    amin tan

  59. Salam Tun.
Barry Swine tu satu hal lah. Yang penting VC UM tu perlu ditukar kerana gagal melaksanakan tugas. Termasuklah pensyarah-pensyarah yang terlibat.

  60. Salam ayahanda Tun yang sangat di sayangi,

  61. Tun Mahathir
so, you must surely be appreciating your successor Tun Abdullah, who till today has just shown the other cheek, to your accusations.
    Per your points 3, 4
wouldn’t you say Tun Abdullah indeed has allowed your remarks and comments to be delivered without shutting you up, shown true calibre to withstand all the accusations you hurled against him and continue to do so?
And per point 5…wouldn’t you say you’ve yourself shown to portray “one who is beyond fault or misdeeds”?
Anyhow, I like this blog you’ve written…it’s quite progressive from your thinking, and I hope your ardent followers can truly understand it’s significance and how “bang on the nail” you are with your statements.
    (Ravi)

  62. salam,
Tun,you are truly a great leader
your track record has proven it
your inner sense and your principle is highly regarded and respected by many

  63. Assalamualikum Tun,
    Saya menyokong Tun sepenuhnya.

  64. Assalamualaikum ayahnda Tun & Bonda,
    please allow me,
berry wain can go to **** and have a merry wine with his lousy opinions because he can only accused & accused anything he liked about Tun but Tun has proven that he is a fine statesman. he never runs away from his opponents. he is here to face all the accusations & the best is no one can prove anything until now. all is based on speculations & hearsays…
if it were another person, he’d have run away else where or overseas to hide. some accused Tun of corruptions, taking millions & millions from each of the tenders/contracts given during his tenureship but can anyone prove where are these riches kept under Tun’s name? and why Tun is still here, taking all the blames & keeping on thinking for the sake of our nation if Tun is really a corrupt person? does one with lots & lots of money will stay behind to take all the accusations?
    would you?
Wish all the blessings from Allah SWT to Ayahnda Tun & Bonda…
    Wassalam.
    just my brain wave…

  65. Assalamualaikum:
Tun you are right. writer like B Wain is just tong kosong. Bunyi saja banyak tapi tak dak isi.

  66. Tun, I may not always agree with your ways.
But I respect you for the things you have managed to achieve in your career. Obviously you cannot please everyone.
I wish I have your drive, your vision and your strategic thinking mind.

  67. Assalammualaikum Ayahanda Tun….

  68. Salam..
    Tok Det..
I’ve read the book and I personally think that there is nothing to shout at. Everything is merely about perception and only a fool will believe it.
Tok Det, eventhough I have at times disagreed with your actions, I believe decisions were made based on the interest of this country.
Whatever it may be, I really hope to read your memoir soon and hope the memoir would able to answer all of the things mentioned in Wain’s book.
    HESMEL FAZNEE FAISAL

  69. Salam Tun,
    1) Inilah namanya Pemimpim Dunia.
    2) Inilah namanya Pemimpim Islam.
To Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, if you ever read this blog, please be mindful that we have sleeping giants amongst the Malays. I hope by now you realize what makes a true leader!
We know that you have been looking down at Malaysia and Malays as well. Please look at yourself first!
    3) The immigrants that came to Malaya for survival were very tolerant then because they were poor. Now after being rich, they wanted to remove the Malays. This is how the immigrants say thank you to the folks who gave them space to live.
    4) Gerakan today said in the spirit of 1 Malaysia, the time has come to accept all citizen regardless of race as Bumiputeras. Thank you Dato’ Seri Najib for the wonderful idea!
    5) The immigrants of Malaya and Singapore have definitely over-stayed their stay here. People who over-stayed tend to think they are welcome forever.
    6) Today, Malays have no leader to protect their rights. UMNO has completely failed in its role. What will happen to the future of Islam in this country if the Malays continue to be voice-less?
    Melayu itu hebat!

  70. I am currently reading this book. Only 1/3 done.
I believe since you are no longer the Prime Minister (although you may be powerful behind the scene), you should sue the author if you think he has tarnished your image unjustifiably.
Especially a westerner who always thinks that they are better than us, we ought to teach them a lesson once and for all. Not to hurl wild accusations without proof. If the author loses, he will be financially burdened and will not dare to do the same unto others. This will serve him a lesson. (in the event he loses, you can waive the right to monetary compensation from the accused, if you feel that you dont need this, but nevertheless the world will know that the author speaks rubbish). So all in all you will win and will protect others from being the victims of similar authors.
Had this book been published from unknown author, then it is just as well that you leave it at that as no one will believe him. However, this book, published by an author attached to ISEAS, Singapore, a body involved in so called research (we dont know how independent or reliable publications are coming out of this organization), seems to lend some credible weight to the ordinary person who reads the books. We can read the book with a pinch of salt but for others, they might not be so critical of the author. Furthermore since it is published in Singapore, it seems to suggest that Singapore is backing this vilification of your premiership. Thus you should sue them if what is written in the book amounts to defamation and blatant lies.
We know that being a politician is not easy with so many of those wanting your out and you will have to defend yourself, if you are clear with your conscience of ultimately doing good for the country. And we also know that there are calculated risks involved, sometimes even monetarily, in which without risks taken, there will be no possible profit/benefit. Sometimes we do make mistakes in which what we adjudge to be correct may be wrong or mistimed.
However, if you feel what is written in the book is unjustified, we will support you if you sue them. Had you not done so, some will say that what is written is true, and that is why you do not want to sue them because it will open up more unwanted issues/secrets to surface. And you do not want to be left with such a notion on the general public, although I am sure you may think that it is a waste of time as you have better/more pressing things to do. In due time people will forget.

  71. Tun,
    Assalammualaikum wbt
    Kenapa UMNO terlampau liberal?

  72. salam Tun,
I think I know who those people you are referring to….hahaha.Some of them are just south of the border who will not hesitate to arrest this Barry Wain.Of course many who dom’t like you are having a field day tarnishing your reputation.
But I have always trusted your ‘nawaitu’,Sir.Damn others.
    Wassallam
    Jeng3

  73. Barry’s expose of you misdeeds is justified to some extent, Tun. You can’t claim to be a paragon of perfection, angelic perfection. All human beings re prone to make mistakes and you are no exception to the general rule.
I’m glad you are not contemplating to sue the author, unlike the great Asian autocrat Lee Kuan Yew. Lee has enriched himself by suing his opponents, both local and foreign. He has persecuted and oppressed them using the compliant judiciary.
Let the posterity decide your legacy. Don’t be judgmental.
    ABI

  75. SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG
    AYAHANDA RAKYAT TUN
    IZINKAN,

    3. I am leery of politicians who sue their critics. I suspect that what they want is to make the issue sub-judice so as to prevent the critics from attacking them on the issue. This is a cowardly move and in fact proves that the criticisms are fully justified.
…AT A GLANCE, THE CASE OF THE BOOK ’50 DALIL’ BY KHALID JAFFRI COMES TO FORE…..FORE! SHOUTED TIGER WOODS WHEN HE MISCUED HIS BALLS INTO THE LADIES INFRONT OF THE CROWD AND SO DID THIS MAN WHOSE BALLS HIT THE MEN BEHIND THE CROWD.
AND A RETIRED OLD ENGLISH TEACHER OF MCKK ONCE REMARKED ‘SERVE HIM RIGHT..DEGIL, TIDAK MAHU DENGAR CAKAP!’
STILL IS STUBBORN AND STILL IS NOT LISTENING TO ADVICES!
…AND APTLY SAID BY HIS ‘SEDARA KONTAN’ IN PAKATAN RAKYAT,
    ‘DIA MESTI BERTAUBAT LAH’
    ALFATIHAH, AMIN.

  76. A book of praise doesn’t usually sell much, Tun. It’s tougher to stay cool and smile when someone takes a pull on you than to hit back with a vengeance. I think that’s also the mark of a responsible leader who is confident that what he did during his tenure of office was the best that could be done for the nation he led.

  77. Assalammualaikum Ayahanda Tun
Good respons tun … org macam ni toksah duk layan ! keje mereka tak ada lain hanya nak memecah belahkan rakyat dalam negara ini saja … ape yg mereka dah buat untuk negara ni ? tak ada apa ! jadi buat ape nak pergi dengar mereka berkokok ?!! cuma hanya yang menyedihkan kita rakyat malaysia ialah ade pulak universiti dalam negara ni yg bersekongkol dgn pihak2 parasit ni hingga sanggup mencerca, menghentam dan menghina negarawan yg terang2 dah mmg buat macam2 jasa pada rakyat dan negara … sampai hari ni kita belum dengar lagi mereka ni meminta maaf pada tun ! kite pun tak tahu apa sebenarnye niat mereka menganjurkan forum sebegitu … mesti ade udang di sebalik batu … jadi kite minta kerajaan ambil la tindakan sepatutnya kerana kalau dibiarkan nanti takut kerajaan seperti memberi isyarat pada rakyat bahawa perbuatan menghina dan memfitnah pemimpin secara “ilmiah” ini adalah tidak mengapa … tak banyak sikit pun takpalah … janji ambil tindakan …
tun apa2 pun jaga kesihatan ok … janganlah kerja kuat2 sgt …

Lainlah satu lagi “anak didik” Chedet semasa zaman Chedet PM dulu. Beliau memang suka nak saman menyaman.
    Terima kasih.

  79. For once I can wholly agree with you. I actually like the idea that your good friend across the causeway, LKY, would be squirming in his seat reading this. You should have said this when you were the PM! But then again that would not have been politically correct, would it?

  80. Dear Tun ,Really need your favor on this.I have sent the below comments to the newspapers but somehow or rather they are not publishing it.Would really appreciate if you can highlight these problems in your column.Thanks.
NO BUS SERVICE IN BANDAR MENJALARA
Can RAPID KL please explain why is it there are no bus plying this route for the past 2 years ?? If the reason given is that there are not enough loads for it to be commercially feasible then I call upon these steps to be considered –
1.RAPID KL sack the manager who advices it so because this area is so populated even more than many Taman in Kepong area.Anyway just to enlighten RAPID KL, as my wife is a regular commuter ,let me tell you why the number of commuters drops when it was in service earlier plying the Menjalara and Taman Maluri route was becos every time when reaches Jln 1/62 ,the drivers will stop and ‘lepak’ at the mamak stalls ( apparently this is the first stop of the route when the bus is empty) at least for 45 mins to an hour.Even the bus was half full the drivers will not be bothered, they will continue to chit chat among themselves.Over the times many commuters have lost patience and fed up thus giving up using the service If it was properly managed and utilized I am sure it is a profitable route baring in mind the taxi fares is so high now.
2.RAPID KL surrender back the route rights to the government in order to give it to other operators who are interested. Still remember back in those days where mini bus was so popular among the commuters. No hassle, fast punctual and economical. And the operators and drivers were a happy lots too because of good profits and commissions. If RAPID is clueless then it should learn and adopt their system.
3.Profit aside,as a concessionaire that monopoly the bus service in Kepong ,shouldn’t it meet the social obligation of covering the whole area?? What about the ministries involved have to say about this ? Don’t you all have a duty to check on your operators’ performance from time to time ? Where’s the KPI ?
The commuters in Menjalara will be grateful if bus service are provided at least to destination like Kepong KTM and Metroprima Jusco (to connect with the city bus) if direct bus to the city cannot be provided.
TAXI FARES – I wish to draw the attention of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato’ Seri Nasri Aziz who was responsible for launching the new taxi rates months ago.I remember him announcing 30 percent increase in taxi rates which I think is fair considering the last price revision was very long time ago. But I wonder if Dato’ Seri have ever tried boarding a taxi with the new rate to check the precision of the new meter ? Let me give you 2 examples – Short Distance- Since there are no Feeder bus service nor normal bus service from Menjalara to Kepong KTM station which is hardly 3 kilometers away, commuters are forced to use the taxi service. The normal fare previously before the hike was RM 4 at most but after the hike,it is RM 6.50 (if we are lucky when there is no jam). Long Distance – Kepong to Ampang (Non Peak Hours/Daytime) Previously – app RM 14 . Now – app RM25 . I really do not understand what mathematic formula does the Ministry applies when coming up with this new calculation. Its definitely more than 50 percent. Especially on the timing side of the meter, let me relate my friend’s ordeal taking a cab from Pandan Indah to Bukit Bintang on a working afternoon. The normal rate he pays was at most RM 9 but becos it was raining heavily in the city that day he was caught in the jam for about an hour and he ends up paying RM38 even before reaching his destination becos he only have RM40 with him at that time.He has since bought a second hand Kancil. There goes another car jamming the street. Mr.Minister,I hope you put yourself in the shoes of the commuter to have a feel if you are serious in promoting the use of public transportation.( never mind the lousy integration of the whole public transportation network that we are having right now, first just improve the individual line of each public transportation mode especially taxi, bus and commuter train. Except that for LRT I must admit is good. )
KTM Commuter Train – The GM of KTM was telling the media last month that the waiting period of 15 minutes will be reduced to 7 to 8 minutes in the future. Please Mr. GM don’t treat the public as a ‘dunggu’ in order to impress your boss.If you can ‘turun padang’ as what our PM said and wait together with us,if at any one time we only need to wait 15 minutes after the last train left,I will pay double the ticket whenever I use the commuter service in the future. What say you ??
KTM should also improve on the direction signboards leading to the commuter station. What’s the point when we finally see the signboard when the station is only 200 meters away or we have the full view of the station already.I am staying in Kepong for years but when the first time I tried going to the station,I really have a hard time locating it even thou I know it is somewhere specifically in that area.Same applies when I tried driving first time to many of the commuter stations elsewhere in Klang Valley. For practical reason ,I suggest Mr.GM try to drive yourself to a few stations which you have not been there by driving, then you will know what I mean .And please look into your lightings at your stations and the surroundings as I am sure you will feel very worried if your children or spouse goes there by themselves at night. And also please improve your PA system (I am not sure if it is due to the system or due to the announcer) in the Sentral Station,sub-stations and in the train.Except for the pre-recorded No Smoking Message that is loud and clear, other important announcements like delays, cancellations, promotions etc etc sounds so soft and most of the time all we hear are mumblings, mumblings and more mumblings. If you compare KTM announcement clarity against LRTs then you will know what I mean.
KTM- I need to clarify that I am not against your management or anybody in particular but for all the weakness stated above you should carry out a mass survey among your commuters to see if there are any truth on the above so that improvement can be made immediately becos some of the problems are not related to lack of coaches which the public already knew. Can KTM also consider to provide feeder bus service in Kepong which have a very sizeable population now ?

  81. Dear Tun As I have commented when the first time this topic was brought up,the author might actually wanted you to take action or to rebuke him so that it will create more curiosity among the readers to buy his book.In this way his book will get free publicity thus generating good sales.Head he wins, Tail you lose.Smart ass actually.Dont fall into his trap.

  82. Assalamualaikum Tun,
As far as I am concern, the critics can say whatever they want to but at the end of the day, we, the Malaysian citizens will be a testimony of your great leadership. You, Tun Mahathir, give us CHOICE to live our lives as what we want it. Things that people take for granted but forget that it can be taken away in a second. You provide for us world class education and facilities, affordable health care, freedom to exercise our religion be it Muslim,Christian,Hindu or Buddhist. You SHOWED us that nothing is impossible and with a little effort everything is within our reach.
So let them shout to the world what they think you but we,as Malaysians know in our heart we owe you great gratitude for making Malaysia what is it today. Most importantly, for giving us CHOICE.

  83. Tun Dr. Mahathir,
“My view is that a politician must accept all the opinions for or against him as normal. They go with the job.”
I agree with your statement. In fact, I extend further that all opinions for or against “anyone” is considered normal. We simply cannot expect people to agree or disagree with us on all issues. Sometimes people just hate our guts, and will disagree with us regardless. Be happy with your life Tun; you have already significantly contributed, and continuing to contribute, to the well-being and wealth of this nation.
    Best wishes.

  84. Hi Tun, may you be in good health.
The attempts in the book are very sad. I agree with you, suing the author could be too much at this stage. However, I think there is a need to deny the wrong accusations, if he put them in that way. Of course, he has the right to say his opinions on you but wrong accusations are simply something else.
I believe no one could escape from making mistakes and last time I check, no one knows everything. However, we want for the better and hence we should cherish good things and to a certain extent, forget and forgive the wrong doings.
Thanks, and may you be in good health 🙂

  85. You could possible have your own forum to refute some of the points given in the book. Alternatively, finish up your memoirs and publish them already. If people are to be the judge, we need to have the necessary data to help us come to a decision.
