OIL

1. Oil drives the world. Ever since the invention of the internal combustion engine, the demand for oil has been increasing by leaps and bounds.

2. Today the estimated total consumption of oil per day amounts to 70,000,000 plus barrels. Engines has been made more efficient i.e. consume less oil for a given power. But still the demand for oil continues to rise.

3. In 1973 the price of one barrel of crude oil was just 3.50 USD. The oil producing countries were being robbed. They remained poor and at the mercy of the Seven Sisters – the biggest and richest petroleum companies of the world. They dictated the price. And they paid royalty amounting to only 20% or so of the price of crude to the poor countries.

4. The producing countries would have remained poor but for the anger over the state of Israel being supported by the West. Following the Yom Kippur War, the Organisation of Oil Producing Countries, decided to cut oil supply to the West.

5. Suddenly the producer countries got the upper hand. They could deny supply and therefore they could dictate prices.

6. Within one year the price shot up to 12 USD. From then on the price went up higher and higher.

7. Today the price is USD 120 per barrel. The producing countries had accordingly become extremely wealthy from their production sharing contracts.

8. But it is not just the producers who are pushing up oil price. The Western consumer countries are even more guilty. Their profligate ways and their policy of dominating the world has resulted in sanctions and wars against the Muslim oil producers which invariably affected the supply of oil to the world. The war against terror initiated by the United States has resulted in blockades against many Muslim oil producing countries.

9. In total disregard for international law and the United Nations, the United States is currently blockading Iran, a major oil exporter. In order to make the sanctions effective the United States need other countries to do the same.

10. But countries which source their oil from Iran are naturally unwilling to join in the blockade. To get them to apply sanction the United States is now doing a lot of arm-twisting, making threats against the total trade of these countries. Countries like Malaysia are very susceptible.

11. This great advocate of free trade, of globalisation, of a borderless world seems ever ready to renege on its undertaking on free trade. You get to trade freely if you do as you are told.

12. But the United States cannot force China, Russia and India. No attempt is made against European countries either because without Iranian oil their economies would grind to a stop.

13. This great country which is so dedicated to promoting free trade picks and choose the countries to bully. But then it is also not so committed to the freedoms of democracy.

14. Faced with the threat of terrorism the United States did not hesitate to curtail freedom even for its own people. Having passed the equivalence of the ISA on foreign terror suspects, Obama recently extended detention without trial to American citizens as well.

15. But the United States Congress has done better. It also legalised torture. So there is no need to send prisoners to countries which permits torture.

16. Malaysia should be proud of having the United States and Britain copy its legal system. But while Malaysia rids itself of the ISA, don’t expect the United States to do the same. Guantanamo is now 10 years old. It is set to go on forever.

17. There will be no trial for the detainees. Homeland security means no security for others. At any time they can be bombed and rocketed out of existence, starved through sanctions and failure to cooperate in applying sanctions against Iran will result in denial of free trade.

  1. Salam Tun & Keluarga.

  2. Peace!

Why do we keep on condemning US when we ourself bow down to them?

Why do we keep on condemning US when we ourself stopped buying oil from Iran as dictated by them?

Everyone is condemning the US but nobody is condemning the Malaysian government for stop buying Iran’s oil.

Should we not walk the talk… or to be like ‘cakap tak serupa bikin’?

We cannot control the US but, as a sovereign country, we should have control to our own deeds.

Well… what to do… with more than USD 20 billions of direct export to US annually (this figure exclude indirect export), we have no choice but to bow down to them.

For us Malaysians, the USD is more important than our principal.

    Rgds.

  5. A’salamkum Tun,

Oil was a weapon in the past, but I don’t think so in the future. There are many allternatives energies.

The US always seems to have a liking for countries with oil. Maybe, it is an excuse for them to attack and takeover the country in question?

If, we look at our region (South East Asia), our neighbours are all friends to the US, except us. Why, do you think Tun, US is so interested in us?

If they (US) are so helpful, why don’t they assist the Phillipines (I called them the sick man of SE Asia)? If you notice every nations (SEA) is developing, including Mynmar, but it looks as though Phillipines is not.

  6. Dear Tun,

May you always be in good health.

    1. I congratulate the government for floating the price of RON97 fuel. By doing so, the public will realize how much the government has been spending on fuel subsidies.

    2. However, removing fuel subsidies may cause many negative consequences including political change. An increase in fuel prices will have significant multiplier effects. The impact will be felt by many lower and middle income people who are already struggling with debts.

    3. Before fuel subsidies can be removed, the reliance on fuel should be reduced. This is a role Proton should have assumed many years ago. By introducing affordable hybrid engine, the relative consumption of fuel by the mass will be lessened. The government will be able to reduce its fuel subsidies following the reduced fuel consumption. In fact, the impact of any fuel price hike later on will be softened. The public would not suffer much as they would in the absence of affordable hybrid cars.

    4. But the term ‘affordability’ is very subjective. What is affordable to someone may not be affordable to another. It depends on one’s income especially his buying power. We must consider what is affordable by the majority.

    5. In response, Proton may assert that hybrid technologies are expensive. To this excuse, many people will refute Proton has failed to decrease its car prices in the first place.

    6. Bench-marking against car prices of the neighbouring regions, Malaysia’s car prices are really high. This is because of the tax imposed by the government to protect the national car industry. But had Proton managed to decrease its car prices down to a competitive level, the government would no longer have to impose protective measures.

    7. In March 2012, you urged DRB Hicom to transform Proton and reverse the latter’s losses. It is apparent that Proton has been wandering on unprofitable business paths. In business, timely response to consumer needs is of utmost importance. Delayed response does not guarantee good sales.

    8. The introduction of Proton Savvy is an example of a delayed response. By the time the solid bodied Savvy was introduced, people’s interest has shifted – probably towards the economical saloon cars. In another case, the simple Proton Saga made good sales because people were very much concerned on fuel consumption. The model meets the consumer needs in time.

    9. This year, we see the introduction of sporty engine cars by Proton. With the growing concern over rising fuel prices, people are not likely to purchase these cars. Maybe some will buy but not many.

    10. The government can only maintain low fuel prices for a short period. After that, fuel prices will be increased. Therefore, buying sporty engines will cost more in the long run.

    11. These days, rational consumers will not pick engines which have high fuel consumption. There is a possibility of Proton making further losses.

    12. Hopefully, Proton will come up with hybrid engines soon – affordable to the mass. There is a great need for hybrid engines.

    13. When the mass use hybrid engines, a fuel price hike is not likely to cause a significant impact. The government will be able to reduce its fuel subsidies; both from reduced fuel consumption of hybrid engines and planned fuel price increase.

    14. I wish Proton well in carrying out this national agenda.

  7. Tun

As rightly put by you that oil is the life-blood of industrial countries without which all will grind to a halt.

The list of countries which are successful economically without a reserve of oil is as follows eg. Germany, Japan, France, Nederlands, Denmark, Sweden, Taiwan, South Korea and the city state of Singapore. The latter stands out as she claimed to be developed in every sense of the word. And she has fully developed all that is ancillary to the oil business except the existence of oil reserves within her territory. We have seen the rise and rise of Singapore through the years since 1965. We have also observed the scrapping of the 2-child family promulgated in the 1970s and the monumental investment mistakes culminating in a huge loss of
US$ 108 Billions of trust money in October 2008. Vide Channelnewsasia November 2008, Singaporean Blogs January 2010 to July 2011, Financial Times Gillian Tett ‘Singapore’s Harvard Model’ April 2010.
The end result of all the efforts of a super efficient Governmental machinery coupled with a lst class Government service is a series of world class gleaming buildings and a burgeoning population of rich and well-fed new immigrants to fill in the void of missing Singaporeans who should have been born more than a generation ago – the middle class. And a lower class of indigenous Singaporeans which is in the majority. The last person to tinker with demographics was Hitler and you know what happened to him. Strange to say, through your efforts Tun, during this juncture a well-endowed middle class of Bumiputras arose naturally in Malaysia.

Gazing at the crystal ball into the future, I could only come to one conclusion arising from the 3 choices Singapore would have to take sometime in the future after having studied personalities on both sides of the Causeway since a significant event happened in my family in October 1951 :-

    1. Singapore maintains the status quo. Vide. S. Rajaratnam the Foreign Minister wrote a 2 part article on ‘Athens and Sparta’ in the Singapore Business Times in the early 1980s in which he predicted a possible destiny for Singapore. And we all know what happened to Sparta. We also have historical examples like Palembang, Hong Kong etc to compare.

    2. Singapore may merge again with Malaysia. But then the ancients counseled that a good horse should not return to its old pastures.

    3. Singapore after a national referendum becomes the 53rd State of the Union following the examples of Hawaii, Alaska, and dependencies like Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Antilles, and American Samoa. All the military hardware like rusting tanks, F-16s, Apaches, AWACS, submarines etc off-loaded to Africa and she becomes the World’s No.1 Arms Trader. The ageing Singapore Guards Divisions of Gurkhas pensioned off for good. The Straits of Johor west of the Causeway be filled in until only a monsoon drain and a chain-link fence separate the United States and Malaysia. Every morning, we can say ‘Selamat Pagi’ to our American neighbours across the fence. This is how close we can get.

Is this the finest legacy of the founding fathers of Singapore ?

Tun, my comments as above were erased or banned from 2 Blogs.

  8. Tun,

You can’t compare Guantanamo to Kamunting

Guantanamo was established to house enemy combatants of the most
venomous type. Islamist fanatical sociopaths who were brainwashed
into murdering in the name of Allah. The ISA was placed
as a political tool to silence critics in Malaysia

Torture i.e. Water Boarding is Cruel and Inhuman. So is a 12year old
Malaysian Boy dying under detention in a Polis Station. To my knowledge
no one has died under the process of ‘Water Boarding’ in Guantanamo. They
however unlike Malaysians have the recourse of suing the US or their
prospective Governments for compensation if wrongly accused even if its
not the fault of their government. Ask Maher Arar who got millions from
the Canadian Government because the US sent him back to Syria. Your
Self Righteous pandering is ,at best, pitiful, at worse, embarrassing.

In the meantime continue to cheer for those combatants who smear
feces(Memri TV) at their guards as they walk by. Allahs Holy Warriors….

    Shalom In Yeshuas Name

  10. Wow what a load of crap this one is.

Malaysia bowed to the demand of the USA to stop importing oil as I have read. I see it is kou tou (chinese) to its master.

If Malaysia had the balls, yes like what men are suppose to have, it should have defy the USA and helped its Muslim brothers. But what brother you say? Shia Muslims aint brothers to Sunnis. They aint give a damn about the plight of fken Shia hajis. The Sunnis in Iran are probably treated better than Orthodox Christians..nope the are both treated like dogs. They live in slums..in ghettos..always in the poorest parts of the city most of them. Have some decency to watch a documentary about being a non-shia in Iran before arguing with me.

Don’t forget the fact that even the Arab states like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and the UAE are against Iran’s nuclear programme. Well, it could be a Sunni conspiracy since most of the people in this forum believes so much in conspiracy.

It is true, USA condone the use of torture but they are technically at war with terror. When we were at war with the Communist, we all understood the need for an ISA. It was imperative that an ISA was put in placed. We saw the legitimacy! But after 40 years, what is the point of ISA except to curtail the freedom of speech of members of oppositions, activist and journalist. Remember Operasi Lalang? What was that? I’ll tell you what was that..a blatant misuse of the true purpose of ISA. That is why the government of the day was pressured to abolish the ISA. And right before the elections, boom, it disappeared like magic. Guess who is riding a white horse in shinning armor if it isn’t Mr Najib himself. How’s that for an ending?

  11. Dear Tun,

This is a quick response to commenter named Amin Tan who posted on April 11, 2012 at 1:55 am.

It looks like some people in Sime Darby have been abusing the company’s email facilities. The supposedly professionals in private sector are not professionals after all. It is a shame to learn that the abuse amounts to discrediting the leaders of the country. If they can discredit their leaders, it is not impossible that they would half-heartedly carry out development plans envisioned by the government.

We must be thankful that today we have a wider access to information. But we must also realize that we now have greater responsibilities as readers. The information we receive may not necessarily be true. There are times I found alternative medias giving inaccurate information which leads to false perception. I also found that some journalists who work for alternative medias are anti-establishment – as indicated on their personal blogs. This contradicts with the principle of neutrality of the media. They may argue that some journalists in the mainstream media are goverment supporters, but they themselves are no better. The responsibilities lie on the readers. The readers have to assess the information they receive.

  12. SALAM KASIH SAYANG
    AYAHANDA RAKYAT TUN
    Izinkan,

    Dear Mr. alfred.willner remarked,
I am neither a fan of the United States nor of Iran but one has to give credit were credit is due and any comment given in public must be seen in its proper perspective.

Neither do we.. but how do we give credit where credit is due when the veto power of the USA and its allies call for ‘ Head I win, Tail you lose’ resolutions passed by the UN..???

Perhaps, there’s three coins in the fountain :-
The 2 sided Head for the mighty and powerful
The 2 sided Tail for the weak and hopeless
The third coin for the child’s ‘piggy’ bank

Let us not sanction the future of the ‘ innocent and helpless’ children of the world!

May Peace and Love be blessed upon them.

    ALFATIHAH, AMIN
Ps. Our prayers for our beloved Ayahanda & Bonda Rakyat and the beautiful children of the world.

  13. Salam Sejahtera Tun.

    May Allah Bless You Amiin

  14. Dearest Tun

1-With the price of oil so high the mostly Muslim countries are making tons of money. But they shouldn’t feel so happy.

2-They would be supplying to the world-real quality oil-but what they will be repaid with is only worthless IOU chits and toilet papers guaranteed by Unc Sam , the biggest debtor nation in the history of the world.

3-Due to their perpetual current act deficit of now exceeding a trillion a year, unc Sam is only increasing its debt with no capability of ever repaying even if wants to.

4-When the moment of truth arrives, and the US dollar eventually see its crash..these presently wealthy Arab countries will be the most miserable people on this face of the earth.

5-They have no agricultural produce nor industries to generate them funds.Nobody want their toilet papers.

    6-That day will come.

7-If Islam is ever to rise again it will not be from there. It will rise from the East where the people have been afforded the wisdom.

8-By people who are not confused by false teachings that reduced their brothers in the Middle East to the level of being the most confused people on earth.

9-They are presently in the minority. But with God’s help insya Allah they would prevail.

“Soon I will show my signs to the furthest regions of the earth and in their souls, that this,(the Qur’an) is the truth and enough that thy lord dost witness over all things”

    Thanks Tun

  15. Asslamu Alaikum Tun,

    To bro.Alfred,

The Muslim countries problem with the US is that the later always practice double standard…US sanctions Iran and North Korea on suspecious that the later are building nuclear weapons. Israel has clearly had nuclear weapons but the US does not sanction Israel. So how could we give credit to US on this issue?

  16. Assalamualaikum Tun,

Based on available world oil reserve and rate of current consumption, how much longer before crude oil runs dry?, Even if better technology is used to extract “dry”oil fields.

We take life in the 21st century for granted. Cities could not function without electricity. There will be no water from the taps since to deliver water through the pipes , pipes needed to be pressurized from electric driven pumps.

The irony of it all. If not mistaken Singapore spends its money building wells for Myanmar but not for itself.

Sure you could go nuclear, you could have electric cars but tanks and aircraft still runs on petrol, diesel or kerosene. One wonders for a country that does not have much crude oil, how does Israel obtains fuel to drive its war machinery? What is the Camp David accord? What is the peace aid that US doles out to Egypt and Israel?
Sorry for digressing, to learn about how this people think please read the book by
    Victor Ostrovsky/Claire Hoy titled
    By Way Of Deception
The making and unmaking of a MOSSAD Officer.

  17. Salam, Dr. Mahatir!

Iran is supposedly endeavouring to build Nuclear Weapons and if it did, don’t you think it would then be a danger to the Region seen that it was threatening to erase countries like Israel from the World Map? Countries, Regimes, Persons who raise threats like this in public must be taken seriously and preventive action such as sanctions must be taken.

Problem with sanctions is that they will normally effect the general public only and will make the people suffer for what their leaders are really responsible for, namely for irresponsible aims of their use of research and development efforts and ill-lead use of language.

You don’t threaten the World expecting the World to take it.

There will always be responses if you do. Iran is currently confronted with such consequences. It can’t thus be said that ” the United States are currently blockading Iran in total disregard for international law and the United Nations, “.

Iran is being sanctioned by Resolutions of the United Nations among others.

I am neither a fan of the United States nor of Iran but one has to give credit were credit is due and any comment given in public must be seen in its proper perspective.

As for the rest of your comments I basically agree, precisely because I am not really a fan of the U.S. or let’s say of the policies of its most recent administrations, be they Republican or Democrat as both seem to have more Weaknesses than Strengths which, unfortunately, is an overall trend in Administrations World Wide these days.

Other than that I generally admire the vitality with which you do still participate in social and political life around the globe at your age and I wish you can raise you voice to be heard for many more years to come!

While in power you were an example for how to effectively face economic problems and many an international leader could today learn from your exemplary behaviour and actions you then took.

Malaysia today stands were it stands due to your wise leadership then.

    Says an admirer from Europe.
    [email protected]
(Too bad we never got together again to talk further about Proton as I attempted at the time – what I proposed then can still be done today though. Please feel free to have someone contact me if there is still any interest and if you are still acting as advisor to Proton – another thing I am admiring you for, to stay in touch with the industries and be part of it.)

  18. Very sad indeed of what’s happening nowdays. Should Malaysia bow down to the West because they will take away abit of our luxury? I don’t think so.

  19. Try Making Solar Panels with Solar Panels
Try Making Wind Turbine with Wind Turbine

Even the China is not that Stupid, They build Nuclear Power Plants and 3 Gorges Dam, so they can build Solar Panels & Wind Turbine and Sell it at Exorbitant Price to the Greenies & Environmentalist.

These purported fixed deposits of Tun Dr Mahathir are nothing but malicious fabricated lies concocted to besmear his credibility and reputation in a very low down and unfair manner. This is truly satanic and it cannot be true for 3 compelling reasons

    1. Tun Dr Mahathir and family never do any banking with israeli banks, Singapore or any where. It is preposterous to suggest that the family went to Singapore and queue up with that kind of cash at the bank to make fixed deposit. Tun Dr Mahathir is not that stupid to perform such foolish acts.

    2. the banking secrecy laws internationally or universally would never allow such exposure or leakages of vital information to take place, wikileak or otherwise

    3. Such fixed deposits certificates would never end in nice zero zero

As such, let everyone sit down and ponder, the bitterness and evil mindedness of Tun Dr Mahathir’s enemies always ready to do harm to his reputation. If ever such similar fabrication of far fetch stories surface again, let us nib in the bud again.

Below is a comment from “Private Eye” to Phang’s article in
Malaysia-chronicle “Why some BN leaders will not declare their

Mamakkutty, you got a lot of explanation to do.You whack Anwar, you
whack the Jews but secretly you and your entire family
stashed your loots in a bank belonging to Israel. Why keep your money
in an Israeli bank and not in our local banks? Where
did the money come from and who were the donors? Is it not
HARAM to earn interest (riba) especially from your arched enemy the
Yahudis (Jews)? Instead of keeping your money in
our local banks to help our economy, you keep them in an Israeli bank.
Where is your partriotism? And why so secrective?
Could this be one of the reasons you, Najib and all UMNO/BN
got leaders are scared to declare their assets

  23. Salam, Dr.

  24. Salam Tun,

I figure that it would be alright if the world moved on to alternative energy such as H20, with Wind and Solar as power receivers, but i shudder to think what would happen to the oil producing (OPEC) countries and nations dependent on them or oil.

And i don’t suppose the religious people have answers other than to pray for the best. Science has the answers, but politics will be very difficult i think. Imagine, for example, saying to Petronas, “thank you Sir, but we don’t want your oil anymore.”

I know people will laugh at me when i say things like that, they say it impossible. I just normally bow, for it sounds like “oil is forever”.

    Thank You Tun

  25. Dear Tun,

The USA will continue to bully any country that stands in the way of its own ‘self-centered’ idea of survival and freedom.

Until such time countries can work together for the greater good of all humanity – we the people of this planet have to endure the world with THE BULLY.

  26. Absolutely agree with your statement: “This great country which is so dedicated to promoting free trade picks and choose the countries to bully”. I am really looking forward to the day when the tables are turned – when the hunted becomes the hunter.

  27. Salam Tun,

Haha… I am the first to comment.

By the way, I salute you Tun, because I can’t see any brave leaders in Malaysia who is willing to condemn United States of its evil act against Muslim countries. Only you are brave Tun.

I am happy to be the first to comment

  28. Salam Tun,

‘9. In total disregard for international law and the United Nations, the United States is currently blockading Iran, a major oil exporter. In order to make the sanctions effective the United States need other countries to do the same.’

Very true Tun. Part of the blockade is to punish countries whose central bank has any dealings with Iran’s central bank by denying those countries access to American banks. That will certainly stifle trade and affect economic growth. The biggest importers of Iranian oil, the EU, China, India and Turkey all have substantial trade links with the US. It will be interesting to see how China and India will act — they’ve already declared that they won’t observe unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and there are already reports of India planning to pay for Iranian oil in gold. The EU and Turkey will of course toe the line.

But the root of the problem is this country in Nobel Laureate Gunter Grass’s poem and I quote:

    What must be said

“Why have I kept silent, held back so long,
    on something openly practiced in
war games, at the end of which those of us
who survive will at best be footnotes?
It’s the alleged right to a first strike

that could destroy an Iranian people
    subjugated by a loudmouth
    and gathered in organized rallies,
because an atom bomb may be being
developed within his arc of power.

Yet why do I hesitate to name
    that other land in which
    for years—although kept secret—
a growing nuclear power has existed
    beyond supervision or verification,
subject to no inspection of any kind?”

    Rest of poem here: [http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/apr/05/gunter-grass-what-must-be-said?intcmp=239]

Needless to say Gunter Grass has been banned from Israel.
