2. But the minimum wage would I think, cause a domino effect. Those now receiving RM900 per month would not be happy with the idea of their juniors getting the same wages as themselves. To preserve the salary structure their wages must be raised also. And of course if their wages go up those above them would also demand an increase so that their seniority would be properly compensated.
3. So the increase in minimum wage would result in increases in the wages of all categories of workers and employees. Costs of everything must certainly go up.
5. This increase should not worry the Government. But it should worry the private sector. Already Malaysia’s wages and salaries are higher than all the Asean countries excepting Singapore. It is certainly higher than China. This might deter both domestic and foreign investors.
6. If investments do not come in, the number of new jobs created would be diminished. This might increase unemployment.
7. Unless Government revenue increase substantially the increased salary bill would have to be met by reducing development budget. This will have other unwelcome side effects.
8. I am sure the Government financial experts have already taken into consideration all these things when they advised the Cabinet. It is just that I worry. Some rating agencies have been talking about down-grading this country. I hope they are not serious. Malaysia has always managed its finances well. I am sure that productivity would increase to compensate for the higher wages and overall costs.

patutnya kerajaan kena kawal inflasi terlebih dahulu sepertimana zaman Tun dahulu yang menyarankan 0% inflasi…..bayangkan dimana duit kita sama nilai seperti dahulu….pasti mewah dan selesa…….kalau harga barang naik maka takda guna gaji naik…….syarikat luar pun lari ke negara lain……silap2 negara kita mempunyai ramai yang tidak bekerja langsung lihatla banyak kilang di negara sudah di tutup dan bnyk org mengangur..org asing makin ramai sebab kos diorg lebih murah..sekurang2nya diorang ada income compare dgn anak2 muda sekarang yg keluar dari universiti still tiada simpanan sendiri……fikirkan la kesan secara menyeluruh dari pro dan contra dari kenaikan gaji ini…….no investor, no business, no employment/hiring, no income, no money, no food to buy, no life……..or you make own business……still want to find the most cheap worker that you can get (of course not from this country)……….

It would be a positive move to force employers to remove the rendering of services and production of goods that relies on supermarkets to produce. E.g. includes the people who fills up groceries into plastic bags, cleaners at fast food restaurants. Malaysians should get use to self service. However it will be negated if the govt allows foreign workers to continue being able to offer their services at a fraction of the cost of local workers. Should maid salaries also fall under the minimum wage category?

1. well first of all i don’t think you understand the concept of minimum wage and why it should be implement in Malaysia..most of employees in both private and government sector were being discriminate when the profit earn by the company due to the increase in productivity were only shared among senior officers..im not saying that the junior employees should be given equal payment with their seniors but the profit of the company should be divided equally among the employees of the company regardless of their rank..
2. the concept is simple…a company can’t afford to pay higher salary to their employees unless there is increase in productivity..in other word, the salary must be equal with the productivity made by the company..if the salary is higher than the productivity than the company will face a loss…this is crazy, no employer would want to do this, it is suicide… but what happen now in malaysia is most private sector company are paying lower salary than the productivity they made…question is…where all the profit goes ??..it went to the pocket of the boss and the senior management while the lower employee are being marginalized..
3. of course we need an increase in FDI to support minimum wage but how do we do this ?…well first of all, we have to ensure that the governance is clean and efficient…corruption must be reduced in order to attract foreign investors to make investment in our country..looking at the present situation, the corruption is still a major problem in malaysia in fact, it is worse than before..our CPI ranking during the last 8 years of your period had drop from 23 to 37…and it continue to drop during pak lah era from 37 to 47 and in only 3 years najib become the pm, our CPI has drop from 47 to 60..i wonder what will happen to our CPI ranking if he continue to become pm in another 5 years..he will probably beat your record as the most corrupt leader in malaysia history considering his wife, rosmah has play an important part in resulting this..LOL…so, i really think you should advise your brother najib to do something about it..i heard some rumors said that he is afraid of you..hahaha

What I do not understand is your comparison of Singapore as it is at present with Malaysia.
Do you realise that Singapore is a failed State ?
i. Singapore’s Policy on the 2-Child Family in the 1970s literally ensured the eventual disappearance of the Singaporean Chinese which has now happened. In the 1980s, I asked a Singaporean friend, ‘ How is your family ‘. He replied,’ My factory has closed down already ‘ At present, there is a huge vacuum of at least 20,000 souls which should have been the Singaporeans born as the 3rd or 4th child of a real Singaporean family in the 1970s – the top bracket in ordinary parlance. They are not there. Hence, the importation of foreigners to fill the gap. As we all know, this is not quite the same thing. What a pity !
I am mystified how the leaders came to such dead-end when in 1970 they themselves calculated that Singapore required 200 persons of top calibre to govern the then population of 2 Million !
ii. Singapore’s much touted meritocracy society is only applicable to the top 1% of the population. What about the other 99% ? This is the demography of any country anywhere. Hitler was the last person to tinker with the demographics and we know what happened to him. And meritocracy is based on academic qualifications and money. With the 1% getting more and more by the millions of Singaporean dollars, how do the 99% feel ? What about the late bloomers ? Actually, there are Malaysians cleverer than the Singaporean best in Malaysia. We are humble. We are not used to blowing big trumpets.
iii. Apart from the disastrous 2-Child Policy, the much touted Singaporean meritocratic pyramid made a fool of themselves by losing

The only way out for Singapore to upkeep her standards of living or raise it, is for her to be the 53rd Union of the United States and pensioned off the ageing Brigades of Singapore Guards of Gurkhas, the rusting tanks, the F-16, the Apaches, the AWACS, the submarines etc. and foist the whole lot to Africa and becoming the World’s No. 1 Arms Trader !

1. Whatever wage amount you give will not remain for long. The purchasing power changes due many factors. Changes to cost of living, newborns to a family, illness, and many more. But it does help if we know how to manage ‘resources’ well.
2. Yes. Resources includes money, time, efforts and many more. They may not be in monetary terms. But having resources promises one to be better. And the most important resource is a ‘thinking positive’ attitude. While others are busily complaining, smart ones will continue to take up the opportunity.
3. My ‘most dramatic idea’ to face the new global challenge… Better pay for people, grow business opportunity and reduce cost is like this.
3.1 Firstly certain sectors doing Admin nature jobs do not need to work 9 to 5. Maybe start 11 to 4. You save on OT, electricity, water etc. Govt offices can save a lot. Same goes to private sectors. People becomes more productive by using internet more and travel less. The air is less polluted. More time for people means more things to do. Can enter part time business. Can spare quality with family. Many things to do.
3.2 Industrial works maintains their same working time. These jobs normally are paid higher than those in the non-industrialized sectors. By doing so maybe people sees working in the industrial sectors as attractive and better compensated. The cycle effect be that more Malaysians wants to take up Technical or Engineering subjects. Indirectly the country will have high skilled people more in the future. Less dependents on foreign experts. Instead more investment will come in.
3.3 Foreign maids problem will be partly be solved dont you think? Wives will spend more time at home using the net and with doing half-day jobs.
4. I know its a crazy idea but who ever thought that Facebook is a billion dollar business? It was just a place where peope communicate with one another. And during that time we already have other platforms of communication.

I was just thinking “what is the MINIMUM wage should be?” If we set it too high, it will obviously drive away potential investors (including local businesses) but if is too low, then our people will complain that it is not sufficient for them to survive.
The low wage earner complains that they have to pay for their car, fuel, and toll. Why? You can use the public transport. I own a car, but if I have to travel to KL, I take the KTM. I agree, it is unpredictable, sometimes it takes an hour to get to KL, but it is cost efficient.
Next, housing. I don’t understand. Our “low cost flats” is better than any apartments we find in countries like HK or even S’pore. Do you know that a private apartment in S’pore with an area of 600 sq. ft. (which is smaller than our low cost flat) cost? S$600,000. amazing. Yet we Malaysians complaint about this. Our low cost flat has 3 bedrooms and 2 toilets and the rental is about RM400 (in the suburbs, just outside KL) and above. What is surprising is the majority are rented out to foreigners. I thought it is only for owner/occupier. We should have laws or follow the rule strictly.
I think if we compare to our neighbours (countries) we are in the middle, not too high or too low. I agree with critics that to restructure the economy (just like what s’pore did 20 years ago) we have to increase our minimum wage. It will eventually drive to more automation Or the labour-intensive industry will move out to countries with a lower labour cost. The chain effect is, as it gets more costly the industry will have to be more mechanised, including farming.
Minimum wages is the biggest gamble taken by pm and it illustrate the strong political will and self determination to move ahead. Msia rate is not 2nd. In certain industrial city in indonesia min wages can be up to rm600 a month compare to below rm500 that msian receive

For your information, when foreign companies send their expats professionals to work in Malaysia, they are given “3rd world country” allowance and salaries.
The exact same local professional with doing the same job with the same quality, will be mpaid much less or “normal price” simply because we do not have blond hair and blue eyes. I am not talking about a less competent, less qualified local professional. I am talking apple to apple comparison.
So we professionals know for a very long time now that we work in a 3rd world country, yes. The minimum salary you complained about reflects the true situation, yes.
I however agree and have tested myself, rm 900 is simply too low, rm 1,500 is just about right for normal healthy life. So i wonder if those who set these figures actually conducted tests themselves, i.e. if they themselves actually try to survive on rm 900 in klang valley. I doubt such tests were conducted. I suspect these figures were not scientifically derived.

If we have a system by which we can elect persons to be PMs instead of a party selecting their leader, then we can have a chance to pick people with talent as PM. Otherwise, we can forget it.
As of now our choice is to merely pick which party has better PR and campaign manager. In this country, one who works hard day and night is not necessarily rewarded accordingly. In fact, many are forgotten and taken for granted.
The government does not want to listen to professionals, because the professionals are brutally blunt. But if we are to advance, i don’t see how much longer the government can continue to ignore professionals and their advice.
A good example is when Prof Ungku Aziz adviced not to mix politics and education. Today we pay the price of not heeding this advice. And it is very expensive indeed for those in the know.

Minimum Wage. Q; Why? A; Increase In Cost.
I am of the opinion that the contributing factor to increase in cost is due to the fact that most of us need to use our car almost daily. To own a car we need to pay instalment and here normally about 1/3 of our net earning (minus EPF, Socso, PCB)gone. Then the patrol and toll, that will take away quite a huge fraction of our net earning depending on the distance we travel daily.
Another contributing factor is the cost of the house i.e. payment of the instalment/rental. If we want to have low comittment, we need to have a house quite a distance from our working place (especially in KL, JB & Penang) and this in not helping either as the cost of partrol and toll will increase due to the distance we need to travel.
As for food and clothing, we can control the expenses. We don’t need to eat at expensive outlet or by desinger clothing.
Having a good public transport system whereby the waiting and trevelling time is short. I am pretty sure that travelling by public transport will not take away 1/3 of our net earning. Thus the need to own a car is not that pressing. This will also help improve the environement as less cars will be on the road.
We can also consider staying or buying house far from the city wich will be much cheaper. Thus will help reduces our monthly committment.
In conclusion, to my opinion is that bad and inefficient public transprot is the root cause of the minimum wage issue.

Few days ago i was at the Bersih 3.0 rally and saw Anwar Ibrahim went up and what an act it was. He lets all hell breaks loose within a few minutes. I been posting alot in Malaysia-Today columns why i think he does not measure up as a fitting leader.

What sort of governance is this when the minimum wage is so low? Maids are getting more. By right, given the current cost of living, minimum wage for all government servants and private sector should be at least at RM1,500 for the Peninsular. With a mere RM900 thats poverty! How does one family live with such a salary? Is this is the 1980s? If we have any Pride and Love for our country, we would be rather ashamed to say that we are placing the minimum wage at RM900! This is so shameful! It’s clearly placing us in the rank of a third world country when in actual fact we are a rich and more developed country than our neighbours. I personally do not believe that you think rm900 is sufficient enough. Our govn definition of a minimum wage differs comparatively with other countries. We may not be as developed as them to implement one fully or effectively. It is a good effort from the govn. However, is it sustainable? Rm900 sure isnt enough to live in the city or urban areas. RM900 in the city seems more like a bare minimum amount to live and not starve.

Kerajaan Barisan Nasional yang dibawah kepimpinan Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib telah mengotakan janji kepada rakyat khususnya yang berkhidmat dengan sektor swasta menetapkan suatu struktur gaji minima yang selari dengan keperluan hidup mengikut situasi semasa dan akan datang. Produktiviti juga harus ditingkatkan bersesuaian dengan penetapan gaji minima bagi sektor swasta. Perubahan pergerakkan gaji akan serba sedikit memberikan sedikit tekanan kepada pihak majikan kerana ianya sudah tentu melibatkan kenaikan belanja mengurus pihak majikan. Namun demikian dalam apa-apa juga perubahan yang dilakukan demi kepentingan majoriti sesuatu pihak, segala kesan sampingan haruslah ditangani dengan hati yang terbuka dan rasional.

Mungkin kebimbangan terhadap perkembangan pelabur asing dan dalaman memberi sedikit impak kepada pertumbuhan ekonomi negara, tetapi seperti kata Yg Bhg Tun, pakar-pakar ekonomi dan kewangan kerajaan sudah tentu mengambil kira semua aspek dan menentukan segala tindakan bagi menangani kesan-kesan yang boleh melemahkan pertumbuhan ekonomi negara. Diantara kesan ketara pelaksanaan penetapan gaji minima (lebih tinggi dari sedia ada) ialah upah buruh mungkin akan meningkat.

Apa pun kita harus melihat secara positif bahawa keperluan hidup mengikut peredaran masa amat memerlukan kepada setiap individu (yang makan gaji) mendapat pendapatan sekurang-kurang yang boleh menjamin hidup selesa dan keluar dari masalah kemiskinan atau kedhaifan hidup. Semua pihak (majikan dan pekerja) harus menjalin kerjasama dengan jitu.

Now that the RM 900 minimum wage has been announced by the Government, our only choice is to monitor the effects of the Policy on the general economy per se.
The costs of services and production will rise concomitantly with the minimum base monthly wage. There is no doubt the contribution to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) will increase but this is a trust fund and should not be trifled with. Another country had her fingers burnt whe she thought such a fund was a honey pot of unlimited money. The collection for the Inland Revenue will increase too. However, if there is a decline in employment, whatever forseen increase in the minimum wage policy will be offset to create a zero sum game.
But if the intention is to provide a sweetener to the populace before the implementation of a reduction in subsidies and the imposition of a sales tax at a future date, and also before the impending general election, the unwinding of such a monetary program could be dodgy at best to the general economy and vis-a-vis the world in view of the multitude of doom-sayers which have made themselves heard above the maddening crowd.
We should all be looking at our crystal balls from now on.

Happy May Day!
Our economy is doing quite well, and unemployment is very low. But I know workers are concerned about issues like the cost of living, our low-wage workers and our ageing workforce. We are tackling these tough issues directly.
At the same time, we must get our overall strategies right. Singapore needs to stay open and connected to the world, as a society and a people. It is the only way for a small country to progress and prosper.
Second, our economy must grow. Not simply by expanding, but by upgrading ourselves, raising productivity and creating better jobs for all. This will give us the resources to build a better Singapore.
Third, all Singaporeans must share the fruits of growth. In particular, we must do our best to help low-wage workers. This is how we build an inclusive society which leaves no Singaporean behind.
I talked about these issues at the May Day Rally. The journey is challenging, but I am confident we will succeed. Let the tripartite partners – employers, unions and government – work as one for a brighter future and a better Singapore!
