2. It could produce 2,400 megawatt, but Sabah and Sarawak needed just about 1,000 megawatts even in the 1990s. The question was what to do with so much electricity.
3. Bringing it to the Peninsular would need 600 miles of undersea cables. This has never been done anywhere . The longest was only 200 miles. It would cost as much as a power station in Peninsular Malaysia. To use in Sarawak we would have to have a power-hungry industry.
5. Dubal aluminium smelter belongs to Dubai, and uses natural gas from the ground for power generation – very cheap. They were keen to expand and agreed to a 30 per cent stake in the hydro powerplant and a major share in a 300,000 tonne aluminium smelter.
6. Dubal signed an agreement and paid RM90 million as a 10 per cent deposit on their 30 per cent share in the power plant. It was a win-win investment for them. When power price goes up they may make less money from the smelter but the profit from power generation would be greater. If the power price goes down they would profit less from power sales but more from smelting.
7. The moment I stepped down the successor Government gave back the 10 per cent deposit and told the Dubai investors there was something wrong with the investment.
8. The contract to build the plant was given to Sime Darby with a mainland Chinese partner. The price submitted was so low that the Malaysian who was the next lowest bidder was astounded. He simply said it could not be done at that price.
9. I could not intervene for fear of being accused of cronyism as I knew the Malaysian contractor very well. In fact he built the first phase of the project, the coffer dam and the spillway and had completed it without cost overrun as far as I am aware.
10. Sometimes, and I am not saying this of the contractor for the main project; sometimes very low price would be proposed so as to win the contract. Then as the construction is in progress there would be cost overruns and eventually the total cost would be far higher than the price of the bid. The owner of the project would be asked to pay for the new cost.
11. The Bakun hydro project was given to Sime Darby and Chinese partner at RM1.8 billion.
12. Now the CEO has been dismissed because of cost overrun in the Bakun project amounting to RM900 million. But I believe, and Sime Darby can correct me, the overrun is more than that because the Government has already compensated Sime Darby with about RM700 million. So total cost overrun would be almost equal to the bidded price of RM1.8 billion. The price has been doubled.
13. How come the bid is so low? I would think the engineers would know that they would not be able to build at RM1.8 billion.
14. Who are the consultants in Sime Darby? How come they okayed such a low cost for the project?
15. Is it only the CEO who was responsible? Who are the others who were involved with the project and failed to see that the cost overrun was very high and the project has been delayed by almost 3 years. I think responsibility should be shared. I was told of this cost overrun and delay three years ago.
16. Have we, or rather has Sime Darby learnt lessons and have begun to look at the other major projects it is handling? I think the people are entitled to know when a public company loses over a billion ringgit. Proton lost only RM500 million so that is acceptable. Is losing RM1 billion also acceptable?
Salam Tun.

Dear Tun Dr. M,
1) Your articles “BAKUN” is very simple thinking, make sense and simple logical maths calculation,
2) Why Sime Darby TOP Management can not think this simple, this sense and this logic?
3) Yes, They are thinking very hard, they work very hard, their sense more complicated and sofisticated, they practise and understand very big number and complicated calculation.
4) Ha! Ha! Ha! They are clever than you, Tun.’
I wonder what he is talking about. What is the point of ‘thinking very hard’ and ‘work very hard’ and at the end of the day you lose RM1 billion.
Sime Darby at one time, was having the largest amount of liquid assets, and it is a shame that all the hard work is not helping anybody right now.
Insyallah.

Askum Tun, sorry for the belated comments, just to share my experience as hydropower engineer, for any hydropower project the ball part costing is US 1.5M/MW, out which 70% is civil works. Looking at the numbers it seems SD mgmt has made an attempt to commit suicide, as such the whole mgmt team has to go.
Dear Tun,
1. Sime Darby is one of those who have contributed to the inflation of housing bubble. The properties they are selling are expensive. Expensive enough do deter the proletariat from buying properties in large cities like Kuala Lumpur.
2. Many middle and lower income earners, mainly the Malays, buy their homes via loans. These people are determined to pay monthly installments which include interests to the bank for a period of 20 years or so. They are committed to contribute to the growth of financial industry for quite a long period. Meanwhile the rich, mostly the capitalists, purchase their properties via very small loans; if not by cash. But the former receives only little recognition for their contribution to the economy. The capitalists are much more recognized and their voices are heard very clearly.
3. Malaysia should no longer rely on its property market for future economic growth. Relying heavily on the property market is putting the economy in dire peril of collapse. A double storey terrace in the city was priced at about RM180,000.00 ten years ago. Today, a similar double storey terrace in the same city would cost about RM360,000.00. Sad to say, the home prices are rising much faster than the rents. This is an indication of the growing housing bubble.
4. The United States experienced its housing bubble burst in 2007. Since then, its banks as well as other economies have been severely affected. Malaysia must learn from the incident. Once the housing bubble bursts, the banks will have difficulties in giving loans to the SMEs. When the physical economy is distressed, Malaysia can barely make progress.
5. Retracting subsidies will strengthen the financial position of the government. It will help the government reallocating money to where it thinks best to spur economic growth. However, this action will have an immediate adverse effect to the growth of economy. Retracting subsidies is an impotent solution to the current economic riddle.
6. Your idea of utilizing Bakun’s power excess is a viable solution that will also contribute to the Gross National Income (GNI). If I may expand, the excess power in Sarawak could be channeled to Labuan to make it ‘an island of lights’. It can be another Disneyland. It can also be another Las Vegas without prostitution. But the idea of setting up a Las Vegas in Labuan might invite some oppositions. We need ideas to reinvent our economy.

Salam Tun & fellow CheDet’s bloggers,
To understand all issues that have been raised in this blog or earlier, can be addressed by looking into the commitment by the 3 components of the players; individual involved, the immediate superior/manager or the society and the authorities.
1) Individual – what is his/her understanding of the tasks and the responsibilities? How knowledgeable he/she in the job he/she has been assigned to undertake? What kind of motivation he/she has in order to perform the task in excellent manner? Does he/she aware that Allah knows the truth what in his/her heart? If not, that is the beginning of the problem where syaitan will be the advisor.
2) Manager, superior or the society – what kind role/responsibility the manager, superior or the society plays or undetake in ensuring that the tasks will excellently be carried out with full responsibility. He/she should not know the rights & wrongs, technically and morally.
3) The authorities – Is there any monitoring system in place to ensure assignment will be carried out within the approved standard procedures, the law or morality standard as to protect the interest of the people.
It is too easy to blame an individual for the blunder whereas the decision not necessarily entirely his/hers. The people with the”power” will find the scape goat for their mistake and they consider themselves are free from blame. The authorities seem to be indifferent to the whole issues. Actions will be taken or seemed to be taken depending on who & who are involved and if so, it will be taken just to let them passed as people, in time, will easily forget.
As the manager/leaders, they are assigned with trust and will have great responsibilities towards the accomplishment of the tasks so assigned and will be responsible also to the welfare and well being of the people under his charge. And if this is not understood or made to be understood, everybody will takes things easy as if the effect of the problems caused will end when you die.
For every Muslim, “the study of Quran & Hadith are WAJIB for all Muslim” – Firman Allah in surah Al-Baqarah if I am not mistaken. I therefore suggest that these people should be sent to Quran & Hadith class in addition to class/seminars for acquiring other knowledge. What we can see is that many people have relevant ( qualification )knowledge but lack of Ilmu. There is a big difference between the two. “knowledge” is the gathering and having of information whereas “ilmu” is the application of these collected information with wisdom that will produce benefits to all or those it was intended to. Without “ilmu”, applications will be easily diverted for personal interest, greed for power & wealth. That will be the conclusion to any or all blunders made by human, wallahu’alam.
May Allah protect us all from evils doings.

Tun, please do something on the gov’s decision to switch teaching math and science back to BM come 2013. It is the wrong move. Politically motivated. Risking and playing with our children’s future. What you have said before is absolutely correct. Eventually when they reach higher level of learning, esp. university level, most references will be in english. Scientific journals are mostly in english. Terminologies are not the same. I’ve seen university students (esp the malays) translating most of their references to BM in order to understand the meaning better. What a waste of time. So, like the top people in SIMEDARBY, although they have the highest rank/post, they didn’t make a reasonable and sensible decision on BAKUN. What more to say the MINISTRY of EDUCATION. Their justification to the desicion made are weak, everybody knows it was political. Such a sad thing to see … what is happening to our beloved nation. What will the future hold for us … i dare not dream.
Salam Tun DM
nama melayu (Persekutuan Negeri-Negeri Tanah Melayu) hilang bila nama negara disebut Malaysia.
Salam,
Izinkan saya beri sedikit pandangan dua isu terkini:
1. ********Keretapi Tanah Melayu’s Tanjong Pagar******
Ikut cerita Straits Times(Singapore) May 24, 2010
Agreement on railway land
“The land parcels – in Tanjong Pagar, Kranji, Woodlands and three in Bukit Timah – could be swopped for land of equivalent value in Marina South and the Ophir-Rochor area.”
Kerajaan BN kena cari duit cara lain lah. Kerajaan kena jimat perbelanjaan pengurusan .
Banyak bencana berlaku kerana manusia engkar perintah Allah. Islam menyuruh kita bersatu.
Tun,
Appreciate your comments on why our ktm land at tanjung pagar given away and soon we will be driven to Woodlands and out of singapore eventually…
why in the first place we fight for rocks in pedra branca and now we given away land?
no explaination given and samething say its a win win situation..
how can we win when our land given away..it just doesnt make sense..
as this issue is related to the earlier issue where our oil field near sarawak is given away –it gives the impression every decision made by the government now shrinked our territory..
why we have to be so kind?
other country never give us their land as it is so precious..and a matter of national pride..
please comment on this..thanks
Tun,
I want to ask your comment on the ‘giving’ of KTM land to singapore…
this is the same country who have just fought at the international court for some ‘rocks’- pedra branca or something..now giving acres or lands and also the earlier case giving the whole oil field to brunei..
why our country have to be so generous?
Dear Tun Dr. M,

Assalamualaikum Tun Mahathir,
Terima kasih Tun Mahathir

i hope that Najib did not sellout the dignity and sovereignity of Malaysia by agreeing to that KTM land swap deal with Singapore..im not Malaysian but i was sad to read that finally the KTM land on prime land in Singapore would go to Singapore- are Malaysians to gain from this or is it Najib alone ? One man stood up to all this –the revered Tun Mahathir and im sure with great wisdom . I wonder what is his reaction to this ? – its always in Singapores favor although its a 60/40 share!..im sure the Singapore delegation racing there to seal the deal would cleverly craft the terms. There seems to be a jubilant mood in Singapore as to how they secured another land snatch from Malaysia … thru banquet diplomacy !

Looks like you are playing sandiwara. I am beginning to think the many loses in Government projects are due to cleaning Petronas black money as the National Oil Company had never revealed its account.
Dear Tun,
If you want to save your baby UMNO you must return and reclaim it’s leadership role. Both Pak Lah and Najib do not have what it takes to face the challenging and sophisticated political situation of multiracial Malaysia.Under Paklah, the opposition managed to deny BN it’s 2/3 majority and now under Najib with his simple minded ‘I help you you help me ‘approach-UMNO’s fate is practically sealed.Najib’s approach to winning for BN will require lots and lot’s and lots and lots of money–where are they going to find that money? Are they going to apply for a bank loan somewhere for this purpose? After witnessing in broad daylight how he has tried to corrupt the voters of Sibu, can we give him the benefit of the doubt, that this guy will play it fair?
Has this got anything to do with why we believe that govt will not do much to supervise and bring accountability to the GLCs?And why the silence so far of PNB to comment on SIME fiasco. I help you,you help me? (To ekompute, tks for the expose)
Damai ria says: “Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB),as a major shareholder of Sime Darby Bhd,so far we didn’t hear any response, feedback, statement or any action taken from PNB itself regarding on this issue. We could only hear response and statement from Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG).”
We don’t have to admire Singapore for everything but when it comes to good governance, we still have a thing or two to learn from them. Can anyone tell me whether you have heard of any multi-million dollar scandals in Singapore, let alone one after another? We are bleeding like hell and we still haven’t learn! When will we ever learn?
Singapore is a secular state whereas Malaysia professes Islam to be its official religion. Let us do Islam proud and not give Islam a bad name.

Setelah selama dua puloh tahun Tun mempertahankan nya.Baru saja Najib menjadi PM perkara sebegini berlaku. Oleh sebab ini saya merasakan Najib is worst off than Pak Lah.
Tun tolong lah kami.Bimbingngan Mu sangat di perlukan.Satu lagi khazanah negara telah tergadai.
Tun May Allah BlessYou.

Betul tekaan saya dulu pasal Labu Airport.
Kalau macam tu la niaga, tak lama lagi bankrap sime darby sebab takde nak pikir pasal projek jangka panjang.Harapkan ladang kelapa sawit apa la sangat.Tu pun PAS dengan PKR tengah sibuk nak tawan negeri Pahang.Entah-entah projek arwah Tun Abdul Razak tu pun boleh lingkup jugak nanti.
Kan bagus kalau bendera Malaysia pun kita order dari China.Murah sikit.Buat kat negara sendiri mahal la.Baru meriah sambut merdeka tahun ni.Bendera boleh bagi sorang satu percuma.
Perghh…tengok awek pakai baju jarang made in China, nampak bra hitam.Naik motor pulak tu.Canggih-canggih…Malaysian pun dah made in China sekarang ni.
Saya tak pasti samada kiamat nanti sebab nuklear ke..?
Terima kasih Tun.
Dear Ayahanda Tun,
At last….the deadlock of 20-year impasse ends on KTMB land in the island republic with both leaders of the countries declaring they could now smile and move their bilateral relationship forward……..
‘Live Work and play’ in Iskandar, the slogan for healthy lifestyle of the new century. Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Temasek Holdings Ltd will form a 50-50 joint-venture company to develop an iconic wellness township in Iskandar Malaysia involving private sector from both countries.
Singapore, the republic also announced that upon the expiry of the 1961 agreement on the supply of water to Singapore from Johor on July 1, 2011, the island republic would hand over the Skudai waterworks asset free of charge and in good working order.
Najib also said Malaysia still planned to have the third (3rd) link Singapore, adding that it was a long-term project. The third link is the Sceneric Bridge?
It is indeed a ‘big smile’ for Ayahanda Tun with all these positives bilateral relationship with Malaysia and Singapore happening in ‘May’ 2010 due to forseen Globilisation Challege of Mel Ayu (Soft Mail) by Dr Mahatir Mohamad 10 years
ago……………..
Dear Tun,
GLCs are loosing billions. The Government is loosing billions in mega projects and other wasteful spending. The civil service is costing the rakyat billions in salaries, benefits and bribes yet it is of little use to the rakyat at the end of the day. Our leaders live a life of luxury and opulence. They put their counterparts in the USA, Japan, and Europe to shame. Just calculate all the cost when PM Najib and the delegation go on their overseas trips. Look at our ministers and their life styles. Whose money?
To add salt to our wound, this Government is organizing at the end of this month in KLCC a so called feed back conference on how to cut the rakyat subsidy for petrol, sugar and toll. What nonsense!!
Dear Tun,
Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB),as a major shareholder of Sime Darby Bhd,so far we didn’t hear any response, feedback, statement or any action taken from PNB itself regarding on this issue.
We could only hear response and statement from Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG)
Is there something wrong with PNB?
Could you please write something about PNB?
IS SIME DARBY BOARD APPLYING “ELEGANT SILENCE” MODE UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DROP THE STINKING BOMB? !!!
I am shocked to note that Sime Darby is again making a mess in its business operation. This is the second time Sime Darby got hit by the blunder made by its top senior executives.
What a shame when you have high powered and experienced board members seat on the board of Sime Darby and yet they made the same huge financial loss again. It looks like there is defect in the monitoring system which led to this massive financial loss.
I think it is high time to overhaul the whole Sime Darby organization structure.
To me there seems to be lack of management skills among the top executives of Sime Darby. I wonder who recommended this “tyreman” to be the CEO.
Going through the current corporate profile of Sime Darby it looks like the second or third generation of Sime Darby top management executives do not have the charisma and quality to run a multi-national company like Sime Darby. They lack the experience and the exposure to handle high profile international business dealings especially in general trading and contracting.
DON’T YOU THINK THAT THE CHAIRMAN AND THE BOARD MEMBERS SHOULD GO TOO TO ACCEPT JOINT FULL RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE MASSIVE LOSS?
Amat Berharap,

Greater shift in the Malay vote
INSIGHT
By JOCELINE TAN
Contrary to public perception, it is not the Chinese vote but the Malay vote which has seen the biggest shift to the opposition over the last five general elections.
ANYONE catching a flight out of Sibu the day after the by-election would have noticed the number of Malays wearing shirts and caps bearing the rocket logo of the DAP.
They were from Peninsular Malaysia and had been in Sibu to campaign for the DAP.

Terima Kasih Tun, keranamu, saya disini.
TUN MAHATHIR,
SALAM DENGAN PENUH HORMAT.
TODAY, 25 MAY, I READ IN THE DAILIES THAT CIMB INVESTMENT DIV. SUGGESTED TO THE PUBLIC TO SELL OFF SIME DARBY AND OPT FOR GENTING PLANTATION SHARES.
IN MY EARLIER POSTING, I SPECULATED THAT THERE WOULD BE BIG BUYERS WAITING IN LINE TO GRAB SIME DARBY SIMMILAR TO WHAT WE DID TO GUTHRIE LONG TIME AGO. THE ONLY DIRRENCE WAS THAT WE DID NOT BUY IT CHEAP.
SO I STOOD BY WHAT I HAVE SPECULATED. IT WAS A DILIBERATE MISMANAGEMENT TO BRING DOWN SIME DARBY SO THAT BIG PROXY’S MONEY WILL COME IN FROM NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY TO GRAB EVERY UNIT THAT IS OFFERED AT THE COUNTER. I JUST HOPED THAT SIME DARBY BOARD WILL NOT SELL IT OFF FOR 1 EURO.
LET US SEE THE MOVEMENT IN THE NEXT 2 MONTHS AND HOW IT WILL END.I DONT EXPECT ANY OPPOSITION OR THE GOVERNMENT PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THIS AS IT MAY ALREADY BE IN THE PIPELINE AND AS FOR EON BANK, HONG LEONG WILL BAGGED THIS ONE AS THEY ARE THE ONLY ONE INTERESTED AND IT SEEMS THEIR INTEREST IS FAR AND WIDE. I KEPT ASKING MYSELF, WHO ARE OUR PEOPLE THAT ARE FRONTING FOR THE INVISIBLE HANDS ?
DOES THE POLITICAL DEVIDE IN OUR SOCIETY DURING THE LAST 10 YEARS A COINCIDENCE ?
Assallammualaikumwarahmatullahiwabarokatuh..
Semoga mendapat izin dan perkenan Tun..
Abg samuraimelayu
Lama tak dengar khabar.Moga sihat.
Rasullulah s.a.w menegur Aisyah yang bersetuju supaya Saidina Umar r.a yang mengimami solah dan bukan bapanya sendiri Saidina Abu Bakar r.a
“Kamu menyerupai saudara Yusuf a.s!”
Orang-orang kafir mendakwa kita mesti lihat perspektif hidup dari dua sudut..Two side of the coin.
Juga dari sudut..wether the glass is half empty or half full dan
juga better half a loaf than none..termasuk expression..one in the hand is better than two in the bush..juga one man meat is another man poison..
1)Sedang duduk.
2)Sedang membaca komen blogger di blog Tun.
3)Sedang menatap skrin komputer.
Terima kasih,
Bapa yang benar2 mengharap.
SALAM, TUN

wassalam
Dearest YAB & diKasihi Tun,
1. Tun Musa Hitam must take full responsibility on Sime Darby
Tun M.
in addition to S..Tan’s comments, it’ll be great for the Malaysian public to know what the findings of the study that was done to understand the delays of the construction.
You gave your views on how you felt your sucessor government did not ensure success of this project. It will also serve the public to hear from those companies what they felt were poor decisions from the government that led to the 3rd revival of the project. This info will benefit those who want to understand facts, not just hear your one sided version.
Also, those who actually pick up on Tun’s sentiments…note how he impresses this will be the LARGEST submarine cable installation in the world…this is Tun M. in his element. Everything has to be biggest, tallest and mammoth…not necessarily needed or efficient.
Tun M…why dont you ask Tun A. for a live TV debate on why he should not have overturned a number of your plans…or is that something you feel is beneath you?

I fully agree with you Islam is a beautiful religion. The followers has spoilt it. They were potrayed as very untolerable lot. And lately branded as ‘religion of terrorism’.
Actually we should study the root of the cause of all these nonsense accusation. It all started from Zionis and American propagandas and brutality. For no reason they invade Palestine and Iraq and kill our Muslim friends, confiscate their land. When other Muslim support their Muslim friend in protecting their country we accuse them as arrogant. We must always study the reason behind all the acts.
Unlike some of our friends in Malaysia they always unhappy and complain even though they have become the richest community in this originally Tanah Melayu.
Mr.ekomputeAuthor…..Can you advise all your cousin and relatives to be more friendly and thankful than the Muslim.
SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG

I absolutely agree with Pakbelalang. Seems like we have not done much to the railway network and what exist today is mostly British heritage. I wonder when Malaysia will be able to afford those high-speed bullet trains.
SDR. EKOMPUTE,
COUNT US IN ON THIS. WE STILL REMEMBER THE BULLET TRAIN RIDES FROM TOKYO TO MOUNT FUJI AND FROM PARIS TO LONDON ON THE EUROSTAR.. EXCITING!
IMAGINE THE EXCITEMENT OF OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS..ABLE TO SEE OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY SIDES, MOUNTAINS AND BEACHES IF SUCH FACILITY IS MADE AVAILABLE?… HOPEFULLY BY 2020..
WAWASAN 2020 BUKAN TITIK PENYUDAH BAGI JENERASI MENDATANG IA BERMULA..AND LET US ALL BEGIN ADDRESSING OURSELVES WITH ‘K.A.M.I.’
KITA ANAK MALAYSIA INSAF!
ALFATIHAH, AMIN
Ps. The more we read our Adik Wajaperak contributions, we get to understand the meaning of INSAF!..Thank you Adikku. May Allah swt bless u with more ILMU.
Selamat sejahtera,
Pakbelalang says: “As far as I am concerned how I wish the govt. could construct a new extensive railway network. This is the best transportation system that could have spin off economic activities spread out in smaller towns which are connected to train network. I have several times suggested that we should construct a new railway network from Port Dickson to Melaka, Muar, Batu Pahat, Pontian, JB and move on to the east to Kota Tinggi, Mersing,Kuantan,Kemaman, Kerteh, KT and Kota Bahru.”
I absolutely agree with Pakbelalang. Seems like we have not done much to the railway network and what exist today is mostly British heritage. I wonder when Malaysia will be able to afford those high-speed bullet trains.
Off topic but I was so impressed with this Malaysian Insider article, Abide by evidences and facts, by Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin regarding what Islam actually is. I always believe that Islam is a good religion but the way it is practised in Malaysia, it makes many non-Muslims abhor Islam. The image of Islam in Malaysia is that of non-tolerance and if you say something wrong, you worry whether you will continue to live tomorrow. As a brilliant intellectual, Tun should forsake divisive politics as much as possible and write more about Islam so that we can have a more harmonious nation. How can Tun continue to associate with a party that says You help me, I help you that is not only an insult to democracy and the people but also not consistent with the spirit of Islam.
My Beloved Tun,
Sime Darby needs a ‘HASSAN MARICAN’ or the man himself.
Harap Dapat perhatian Tun!
Bercakap mengenai tenaga elektrik, 2 tahun lepas masa saya tgh buat master architecture saya di Melbourne, saya dengan kumpulan ada buat satu kajian pasal sistem janaan tenaga elektrik di Woking, England.
The system used is called co-generation. It utilise every bit of energy produce even the the by-product heat to generate electricity are used for heating and cooling in building. If only any one could promote this type of electricity, we could cut down a significant number of fossil fuel used to generate electricity. This system combine the use of gas to produce electricity and the heat from the process used to power a type of air-conditioning called Absorption chiller.
The whole system is a simple combination of present technology. If you could put sometime to study this system and promote it.
There’s 3 link to introduce you to the system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woking#Energy_policy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogeneration
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_refrigerator
I’d appreciate if you could spend a little bit of time to understand this very simple system to promote greener energy.
Thanks.

Cara mereka jawab seolah olah kita rakyat diluar kerajaan ni bodoh sangat. tuan tuan dan puan puan kera kera kerajaan msia….tunjuklah ikhlas sikit…buat pa rumah banyak banyak lagi pun kubur kita pun entah dimana.
dear Tun,
This is what you get when you appoint a politician to sit in as chairman of a business organization,he will treat everything to be a light political matter. The fact that SIME has made a billion dollar loss at the end of its third quarter, yet this thick skin Musa said he will only consider resigning pending the outcome of the investigation .That this already audited billion dollar loss could probably be due to a computer glitch somewhere in its overseas division ,and, for all you know-due to these sort of errors SIME could be making a billion dollar profit instead.Hence, the why he need to hold his gun. That he actually didn’t know that SIME was heading for this disaster.Which led me to wonder-do this politician know the ultimate objective of businesses ? So, don’t they discuss profitability at all in their board meetings ?Now if they do won’t they would have already detected the small unexpected /potential loss at its early stage -have the matter investigated ,come up with the remedial actions so that they would achieve profit the subsequent month/quarter -and, tragedy of this magnitude could have been everted?Surely there are some sort of an early warning system in a huge organization such as SIME .That is,if they know how to do business or have done their job.So since Musa doesn’t know the causes yet-so I can safely conclude, business performance/ profitability were not discussed at all in their board meetings- so ,what do they actually discuss in their meetings at the posh expensive faraway venues-all the great drives and putts they had at hole 19?
Ayahanda Tun,
Brief fiscal information for Ayahanda Tun to read from thestar online which I have copied and pasted this afternoon, just in case Ayahanada Tun wants to blog and read early in the morning, I also know how to do bodek-ing ma. The sentiment of anti-BN is still strong base on the news and the sensational writing of S..Tan’s Overrun Cost vs Rakyat Overrun Cost….

Unlikely to become full-blown recession, says PM
By NELSON BENJAMIN and ZAZALI MUSA
JOHOR BARU: The debt crisis affecting some European countries is unlikely to translate into a full-blown recession, said the Prime Minister.
However, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants the country to remain vigilant, adding that no one should be complacent in a competitive global arena.
Najib said this at a press conference after launching the Aero Mall and Senai Airport City projects in Senai.
Your comments do not give enough information for me to make a determination regarding the cost of the project. I have spent half a life time evaluating hydropower plants. My first comment is to hire consultants who have a proven record of
Dear Tun,
The govt. must fix the problem and rectify it once and for all and move on with other projects that benefit our future generation. Mistakes have been made and lesson learned, even though it is too expensive to bare.
As far as I am concerned how I wish the govt. could construct a new extensive railway network. This is the best transportation system that could have spin off economic activities spread out in smaller towns which are connected to train network.
I have several times suggested that we should construct a new railway network from Port Dickson to Melaka, Muar, Batu Pahat, Pontian, JB and move on to the east to Kota Tinggi, Mersing,Kuantan,Kemaman, Kerteh, KT and Kota Bahru.
Don’t you think it is a viable project, Tun. It is no doubt it will involve a massive infrastructure costs. We can construct the network in stages, spread out for 20 years if we do not have much fund to spare. Nothing is costly if we were to consider the benefit that it will bring to our next generation to come.

PM Najib, the First (1st) Lady, several cabinet ministers are meeting Singapore’s Hsien Loon as planned on Saturday, 22.5.2010 after the minor defect in Sibu’s by election…and PM Najib knows international, regional, and domestic economics.

Good day Ayahanda Tun, one of the country Wain compares Malaysia was Japan.
Salam Tun berdua dan pembaca budiman semua,

Sime Darby selalu bermasalah . Apa nak jadi?
******Kerajaan Dato Najib***************
Kerajaan Dato Najib sekarang semakin kukuh. Ramai orang Melayu dah kembali semula kepada UMNO. Jangan ulangi masalah lama. Yang sisa berkarat kena kikis supaya berkilat semula. Dulu Pak Lah(Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi)tersilap tak dengar cakap TDM, sampai macam2 masalah timbul.
********Pengaruh Institusi Pengajian Tinggi***********
Cuba semak Universiti, berapa ramai student dan pensyarah sokong kerajaan? Dasar kerajaan membantu depa, tapi depa gigit jari kerajaan.
Mungkin betul ,mungkin salah.
Jangan buat kerja main2, sembang2, bersolek2, mengumpat2, duk kedai/kantin berjam2, merayau2. Buat kerja betul2. Kalau malas kerja, berhenti sajalah, boleh kerja Nujum Pak Belalang.
Kesimpulan::
BN kena jaga imej.
By the way Ayahanda Tun,
All the 214 SPM students who scored 10 A+ were provided JPA scholarships to further their studies Pre-U (A-Level) locally and Undergraduate Degrees in Overseas. My sister’s daughter was offered UK, and his brother has decided to futher his study in the best local universities.
Due to global adjusements, many big multi-national corporations will invest in public universities (a bond ma) to make 1 Malaysia the developed nation in 2020. DPM cum Minister of MOE, TS Myuhiddin was quoted by local Chinese Media few weeks back as ” No matter what happens, 1 Malaysia will never be “kedekut” in national education.
Now, MCA’s Mr Gan under Chua asked Government to allow Politics (not Olitics la) in Higher Education… macam ini pun boleh, aiya MCA. Mr Gan and Dr Chua do not know what is Kementerian Belia and Sukan stands for? In Olitics, never push our people to go into politics (unless they have chosen Political SCIENCE) before age 40 la…if there are talking about Democracy. Dr Chua should not try to push his son in the Cabinet at this moment. It would be back fired because his son will be perceived as the papa’s boy, susah lo in Democracy whereby Kekandaku and Sahabatku must be seperated la in national interests…….
That’s all for today. From Malaysia Insider, Wain compares Malaysia with Singapore, Korea and Taiwan (if saya tak salah) means he is a Bristish who knows nothing on HOW CULTURES and TRADITIONS Shape the Countries and Leaders since there is no academic theory in explaining these fields. He does not know how cultures and traditions of Singapore’s Mr Lee and HK’s Mr Li lo due to opportunity and ignorant? Let it be…. and to him (or Malaysian Insider), PM Najib is the son of our late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein under Federal Territiory, KL. Read the book so that we can put ourselves in the shoe of Barry Wain as an outsider to see Malaysian Insider. Take care Ayahanda Tun.

Asian stocks react to crisis in Europe
By JAGDEV SINGH SIDHU
[email protected]
KUALA LUMPUR: Worries over the effect of the current debt crisis in Europe ricocheting and weakening the global economy sent stocks in Asia down yet again as the ringgit took a pounding as investors moved into safe-haven currencies.
Losses in Asian markets were most pronounced in Japan, Taiwan and Jakarta with most markets shedding more than 1% in daily trade with the exception of the main markets in China which bucked the trend to post gains for the day.
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KL Composite Index lost 18.43 points, or 1.41%, as investors sided with caution that led to a number of blue chips, led by banking stocks, posting declines.
Ayahanda Tun,
This is what the HK vegetable story is all about as to rise our economy politically, economically and socially so that we can add value to ourselves, the country and the world, kita diam2 ubi berisi dah cukup (low profile), so that we can work wisely to add value to our beloved 1 Malaysia as conceptualised by PM Najib and his Cabinet to break the Racism Wall that torn Malaysia for more than 52 years now under Federal Constitution and Raja Perlembagaan. Gutter politics are bad for the multi-racial nation, however, challenges in facing the world is the right attidute..and that’s
what BN wants 1Malaysians to be in the world map….
Today’s thestar online spotlight…….very lengthy but MUST READ if we want to excel ourselves as developed nation by 2020…. and enjoy reading Ayahanda Tun. Dato Michelle Yeoh loves reading too…..

Can Sime Darby create value?
By RISEN JAYASEELAN
[email protected]
CLOSE to three years after the much-hyped mega-merger that created the world’s largest listed plantation company, the unthinkable has happened. Instead of creating value, value has been destroyed. Massive write-downs from engineering projects gone awry, from a cost standpoint, has hurt the giant. If not for the huge earnings from its core business of plantations, Sime Darby could easily have been crushed by the size of these write-offs, totalling some RM1.9bil since 2004. That’s more than half of Sime Darby’s group profits for FY2009.
All is not lost though, according to its newly appointed acting group chief executive Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid.
Other than the CEO of SD … the menteris and those who are involved with the Bakun project must also step down … this should also apply to all other government projects that failed or partially failed because tax payers money is wasted.
Assalamualaikum..
Kenapa diberhentikan siarannya? Ada kena mengena dengan kerugian inikah? Rasanya tidak. Tetapi kenapa tidak diteruskan? Ermm..
Salam Tun;
Maaf minta laluan, lari tajuk sikit.
Thank to S. Tan, Wajaperak and other commentator/detractor. Even in such circumstances we can even write anything rationaly in Tun’s blog (with his permission) in order to provide constructive comments which is can open the minds of the community.
Most important is the attitude of maturity that is in every Malaysian to be so clever and smart all the time in accepting and adopting all the information spread in the era of liberalization and globalization. tq.

THEY CAN ALWAYS SELL THE SURPLUS ELECTRICITY TO BRUNEI OR MAJOR TOWNS IN KALIMANTAN.
AS FOR WORK ETHICS, I BELIEVE THAT THE MALAY DILEMMA IS ALIVE AND WELL. GENERALLY SPEAKING, THE MOST RESPONSIBLE AND DECISION-CRITICAL JOBS ARE GIVEN TO THE MOST INCOMPETENT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO EXPERTISE EXCEPT “WHO THEY KNOW”.
Bongkar Tun jangan tak bongkar….
YBhg Tun,
Kepada siapa lagi orang Melayu hendak bergantung. Semangat pemimpin UMNO semakin lemah, pemikiran pemimpin PAS semakin bercelaru, pemimpin PKR hampir pupus.
MAZAI
TUN MAHATHIR,
SALAM DENGAN PENUH HORMAT.
BAKUN WAS PROPOSED AND MEANT FOR THE FUTURE AS I UNDERSTOOD IT. I THOUGHT THAT WAS LOGICAL AS WE WERE AT ONE TIME WERE NOT QUITE KEEN TO MOVE INTO NECLEAR RESOURCES AND 2020 IS LOOMING.
BUT, LOOKING AT THE SITUATION NOW, ITS SHORKING TO SEE HOW WE HAVE BEEN SWALLOWED BY COMMERCIALISM AND THE PETRIOTIC WALL IS CRUMBLING BY THE MINUTE. WE HAVE BECOME DEADMEAT TO MARKET FORCES AND SOON THE DONGKEYS OF THE UNKNOWN FORCES.
THERE SEEMS TO BE INVISIBLE HANDS THAT ARE CREATING SITUATIONS THAT IS QUITE UNDEMOCRATIC AND FORCES THE GOVENRMENT AND THE JUDICIARY TO DEAL MORE ON TECHNICALITIES IN ADMINISTERING JUSTICE IN THIS COUNTRY HENCE MORE OFTEN OUR DECISIONS WERE MEAGER COMPLIMENTARY THEN WHAT IT SHOULD BE.
LOOK AT SIME DARBY AS AN EXAMPLE. HOW COULD A BIG GIANT OF THE INDUSTRY TO FLOUNDER WHEN THE SMALLER ONES CAN STILL RIDE THE STORMS AND COME OUT UNCRATCHED AND STROGER.SINCE THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT WE DO NOT KNOW, WE THEREFORE SPECULATE AND,THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT;
1. IT WAS A DELIBRATE MISMANAGEMENT, WHY?
2. BIGGER INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS WANTS TO COME IN AND WAITING FOR
FOR ” BELLY UP ” SITUATION AND IF THE GOVERNMENT DO NOT BALE-
OUT( WHICH COULD HAPPEN ) PRONTO! A SITUATION IS MADE FOR THE
BRITS TO COME BACK FOR THEIR OLD CHEST WAGON.
NOW, MY FURTHER THOUGHT ABOUT BAKUN…..YES,IF WE COULD PULL THE UNDERGROUND CABLE TO THE PENINSULAR, WE COULD ALSO PULL THE CABLE TO OTHER NEARBY COUNTRIES WHO NEEDED IT MOST AND ” MONEY JUSTICE ” WILL COME INTO PLAY AND THE .03 SEN WATER FIASCO WILL BE REPEATED AS WE ARE SO DULL TO THE INVISIBLE HANDS MANEUVERING AND PLOYS.
ARE WE BEING LED BY THE NOSE TO BE ANOTHER THAILAND ??? MAY ALLAH BLESSED US ALL.
I was involved in a way in the upgrading of the Sabah State Railways currently stalled and without any explanation. My job was to observe in detail the work performance of the contractors. The contract started in 2006 and was supposed to complete in 2008. The physical progress recorded at that time was in the region of 80% while payments had been issued for more than 90%.
Sometime in April 2008 a meeting was called to examine the progress of the project and the KSU who flew in from KL a day earlier was to chair this meeting. A number of State Government Departments and agencies were invited to the meeting which was supposed to take place at 9am at the Tanjung Aru Site Office.
A sudden twist of affair took place! As early as 7.30 am we were informed that the venue was redirected to Halogilat Station, a remote station alongside the Padas River and only the State Railways, KTM representative, the contractors and the Project Management Consultant PMC were able to go on board the old rickety train from Beaufort at 9am. The invited State Government Deparments and Agencies were left behind at Tanjung Aru without warning.
At Halogilat, the KSU warned the PMC to abide by his decision months earlier to pay the contractors by method of extrapolation rather than by the usual method of certification by consultants.
I was perplexed as to why the top Gov Servant wanted to ensure payments made irrespective of the progress made and evaluated by consultants. Clearly he is abusing his authority and attempted to pressure the PMC (who were to act for the Government), to clean up the funds available in the Government’s Coffer irrespective of work done.
I was surprised that this honoured (a Datuk) civil servant had the gut to go all way to avoid other State Agencies invited earlier to see his act of conflict interest without really wanting the project to complete according to contract.
Clearly this is an act qualified for investigation by the MACC.
Readers, what I revealed here is only the tip of the ice berg. I believe this is common act of many agencies that failed to achieve their objectives like the Sime Darby one, that the Government agencies assisted projects to fail by deliberately allowing payments without proper evaluation.
With this kind of assistance, no wonder huge sum of money can go down the drain without being noticed in time!
Assalamualaikum Ayahanda Tun.
Saya agak terkejut membaca tadi petikan pendirian Lembaga Pengarah Sime Darby, terutamanya Ybhg Tun Musa Hitam.
Dear Tun,
1. The best person to become NEW Sime Darby Chairman should be Tan Sri Nik Mohamed. He was the former Sime Darby CEO for 15 years before Dato Sri Zubir. It is because he knew the Sime affairs very well so if any ‘hanky-panky’ done by Sime management can be detected very much earlier. Even though under his leadership Sime Bank lost a lot of money. He had learnt a lesson so he will do well after taking over as Sime new chairman.
2. The best person to become Sime NEW board of directors are “no-yes sir” directors. The directors should make their “homeworks” before signing any resolutions. They should not rely solely on one source information which from the Sime management.
3. Sime should start to dispose loss-making non-core businesses so to concentrate on core-business which palm oil plantation. Sime should expand into downstream palm oil enrichment even which the earlier attempted to take over PALMCO, downstream palm oil enrichment not a success.
4. Sime has made billions after selling a lot of companies should start buying into PALMCO type of companies so its can expand bossiness in downstream industries. Downstream business is a multi-billion business to supply raw materials for cosmetic, food and hygiene industries.
5. Finally the politician should not be allowed to become the Sime chairman under what so ever condition because he/she tend to make things worse than better whenever the crisis pop-up. I wonder why Sime was left undisturbed by any politicians for 22 years under your premiership.
Regards
The solution is simple. Without proper check and balance, accountability, the right and honest managers to run GLCs (we do not see this happening here in Malaysia), GLCs should not be allowed to participate in any future EPC contracts, either in Malaysia and overseas. This will prevent a repeat of the debacle at Sime Darby. To get a contract is very easy, submit a bid that is too low to refuse. Get the job but whether the GLC makes any money or otherwise, it is none of their business. Dont forget, the money is not theirs but the shareholders, in this case the Government. How does the Managers and executives from the GLCs makes some money out of the EPC contracts secured by the GLCs. Also simple. From the Subcontractors. The bottom line, Shareholders ie Government minus, Managers of GLCs, plus. We all know this. Let the GLCs do “real” business like properties, plantations, hotels, etc. Not from EPC contracts. GLCs are not simply geared up and do not have the mental make up for it. Many a listed company in matured economies like the US, UK, etc, had gone bust because of EPC contracts. In the case of GLCs, no worries. The Malaysian Government will bail them out.
Salam Tun,

Tun Musa Hitam: I’ll step down if found accountable
By SHARIDAN M. ALI and RACHAEL KAM
[email protected]
KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Musa Hitam has no qualms stepping down as the chairman of Sime Darby Bhd if the board is proven to be accountable for the huge losses of RM964mil from delays and cost overruns in several projects involving the company’s utilities and energy division.
The RM964mil provisioning is made up of losses of RM200mil from the Qatar Petroleum project, RM159mil from the Maersk Oil Qatar project, RM155mil from a project to construct vessels for use in the Maersk project and RM450mil from cost overruns in the Bakun project.
Assalamualaikum YAB Tun,
Considering the depleting natural gas sources and high cost of imported coal, our choices for electrical generation are limited to hydro and nuclear. Between the 2, nuclear has higher risks of wastes and cost overruns (as a result of ever changing Codes and standards). Hence, Bakun is really a necessity if we were to avoid the blackouts of the 90’s.
Unfortunately, Sime’s venture into EPCC or Turnkey Construction Contracts in Bakun and Qatar was really mind boggling considering Sime’s lack of:
-Large scale construction experience
-With the above Sime would not have the in-house competencies
-Even if Sime procure expert advice, Sime would require the Management for this. Being in Plantations and Manufacturing as the core businesses does not qualify Sime for construction.
-Failure in some smaller Petronas Projects e.g Peninsular Gas Utilisation Project Phase 1 and expansion of Compressor Stations should have been good indicators
The point that I like to share here is ‘proven competencies’. One cannot leapfrog into competency overnight. Neither can an organization procure competencies without internal development.
The ‘Corridors’ developments seems to be quiet on all fronts except Southern Iskandar development. A quick check on the organization, one would find that the majority of personnel were exKLCC or Putrajaya. Khazanah made a smart move by doing this.
My biggest concern Tun is the future of Kuala Lumpur. When I was MD of KLCC, Tun was managing KL development through the Planning committee.
Currently, we know major developments are on the drawing board viz Dataran Perdana, Sg Besi Base, Kg Baru, Stadium Merdeka and Jalan Duta. If each one of them is the size of KLCC, the problems just multiply by 5.
KLCC infrastructure development was a big headache, however, the problems were eased by Putra LRT, elevated Highway, Tun Razak expansion and a host of other infrastructure developments by TNB, Maxis, DID etc. Unfortunately, there was little upgrading since then and this results in the traffic jams we have today.
I remembered Tun gave the responsibility to coordinate the infrastructure development then to Tun’s Deputy who chaired the Cabinet Committee. Unfortunately, since it was lagging KLCC development, Tun had to intervene personally.
With the above-mentioned developments, a competent person or body has to take charge. DBKL and Government departments are too busy on operational matters to be able to do the overall planning.
I am urging the PM to reactivate the Planning Committee urgently and form a Special Project Team to plan and implement KL Infrastructure Development in view of these 5 major Projects. All developers must contribute to the upgrading and not leave it to the GLC’s to bear the burden. It had happened in KLCC where KLCC was burdened with the upgrading costs while the other developers benefited.
The Committee and Project Team should comprise of competent people and appoint Tun as Chairman/Advisor.
Regards,
rahimnaim
Tun,
Do you think the board and management of Sime Darby care? It is not their money!!Worst case scenario lose their job but pocket already full!!
Renewal Engery is good so dont stop this project, get YTL and min. 3 international company to be JV partner and there will be accountability then. Cannot give to a single company as they know no one is tracking them.
Assalamualaikum Ayahanda Tun.
Semoga ketemu dilain kalinya. Wassalam dulu Tun.

Assalamu’alaikum Tun,
It is quite surprising of such losses to be blamed on the CEO only.
Poor management decisions which led to the disaster shall be shared as what you’ve mentioned.
Just to recap that Rakyat’s is the major shareholder as Sime Darby major shareholders are ASB (36.84%), EPF (15.84%) and PNB (12.72%). We. Rakyat has the right to criticize and know the details of such cost overrun. I do believe that they “under quote” during the bidding in order to get the job. The strategy is to get the job and scrutinize the budget on sub-contractors. Such strategy are proven to led to disaster based on my 1 cent of experience and observation.
As for engineers who involve on technical evaluation, I believe they have done the best to provide their technical expertise and indicate such lowest bid cannot sustain to execute the project. Most of the time if poor decision been made by the Management, the Engineers are used to be the culprit or scapegoat. Is it fair? Such “non-gentlemen” way is really annoying and show the real “quality” of management team that we have who just thick of their own “pocket” to earn money of living despite thick of their subordinates.
Such Management approach might be called as “Upside- Down” approach besides what been teach industry which are Top-Bottom and Bottom-Top approach.
As for Sime Darby, their Qatar project through Sime Darby Engineering (SDE)is another headache that contribute to another losses. The cascaded effect is that SDE might impose Change/ Variable Order on the next project to compensate back the losses in Bakun and Qatar. Not to be surprised that the CO or VO is charged on other GLC who is their main client locally.
At the end of the day, this kindhearted GLC actually once again to be used to save Sime Darby’s financial losses above. Is it fair enough? Not so I guess. The management team shall be responsible for the above losses not only the CEO but the whole management team who been part of the Approval Committee w.r.t the bidding approval.
May Allah show us the light and bring those who responsible to justice. The might escape the punishment now on earth. But remember that Allah’s punishment in life hereafter is certain and promise not to escape.
“IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU ARE PLANNING FOR FAILURE”
Wallahu’alam………..
I agree with this text mostly.
One thing, facilities can be built in advance for future generation. Surplus sometimes isn’t bad. Just like MSC, Cyberjaya, Sepang circuit and KLCC introduced. We might not find those things useful when we build. However, it’s different when local government can form a good policy to attract more investors to that area, and since facilities are available.

Salam Tun,
I really appreciate the comment made by Kutubkhanah Zama (2nd comment)and I hope everybody should read it.It is true that our GLC directors mostly care for personal interest and perks. They are appointed on political smells. The question of dedication towards discharging their duties is put aside.
This what had happened to UMNO at high level. I am not surprising UMNO will loose its seats one by one.
Tun please save Sime Darby and do not let it became Sime Bank Bhd
Those overseeing the project are the ones that should be hold responsible for the losses. Sime Darby and a Chinese partner seems fishy like there is some conspiracy to bring losses to the project. I am sure some quarters are getting loads of commission when they approved the Chinese partner in.

Hi Tun, I understand that more than 300,000 Malaysians emigrated in the last 18 months of so. How about coming out with an article on this and whether you still believe that Malaysia will become an industrialized nation by 2020? What is troubling is that the Malays are also emigrating! Tun mentioned that the moment Pak Dol ‘no quality’ became PM the Dubai investors were told there was ‘something wrong’ with their investment, and returned their 10% deposit. Pak Dol was too dumb to know/understand much about the technicalities of the project. The whole scenario must be mooted by budak kurang _jar (KJ) & his 4th floor gangsters, as were the case to all the cancellations/revisions to Tun’s other projects & the ‘flip-flops’ which was synonymous with Pak Dol. Pak Dol will never explain details of the ‘something wrong’ because he doesn’t know! He only has to listen to the budak KJ then made the announcement.
Pak Dol & the budak KJ only have 4 things on their mind then:
1. To rape the country of everything with big value
2. Small portion of the loot from (1) above to be disbursed as sweets/candy bars to plentiful UMNO individuals & other personalities in order to remain as they were then
3. To promote/appoint/reward any individual who are against and/or willing to discredit Dr. Mahathir, to the posts of ministers, head of GLCs, etc……(Zaid, Shahril tong kosong, Ian Chin, Tawfik Ismail, Bar Council, Musa ex-DPM, even Zam Maidin!,….all on the cheap list)
4. Budak KJ to buy his way as the youngest PM (wekkk…, feel like vomiting)
The Sime Darby fiasco adds one more to the long list of scandals by Pak Dol & budak KJ, and what next?
We are getting impatient as to why PM Najib is continuing pretending to be deaf/blind/mute. With the Chinese ever confident of winning the race to Putrajaya, Najib must initiate investigations to all the scandals at once so that Malay protest votes during PRU13 don’t exist. People are already starting to assume PM Najib has one hand tied to his back!

Assallamualaikum w.b.t Ayahanda Tun dan isteri,
Saya berpendapat Sime Darby perlu disiasat sedalam-dalamnya.
5. Pihak yang memanggil tender tiada membuat satu anggaran kos yang realisitik sebelum tender dipanggil.Kos anggaran pula tidak mengambilkira kos-kos luar jangka.
6. Tiada anggaran kos marjin (i.i harga siling dan harga minima) dibuat yang mengambilkira kesemua aspek i.i. manusia , alam semula jadi dan teknikal.
i’ll not really talk in the economic view. tapi kejamnya kita pada alam sekitar bukan..ok la…mungkin bukan kita, tapi pada sesiapa yang bertanggungjawab. membina satu empangan seperti yang kita ketahui, bukanlah satu projek yg hanya mengorbankan tanah seluas sekangkang kera.kalau nak bercerita mengenai kesan, insyaAllah saya yakin, semua orang tahu.
hopefully one day, we can do more development, but in conserving our nature.
one thing i want to suggest to tun actually. i’m really interested to read your opinion about ‘burqa’ issue in France.
as I read in the most popular newspaper in Msia (BH,utusan), we don’t really talk (or never) touch about this issue instead Saiful dan Anuar and so on. we are well known as the best islamic country, but if kita tak rasa terkesan dengan isu ni walau sedikit pun, rasa macam pelik juga.
bukan ingin membesarkan isu, cuma ingin semua orang lebih sedar wujudnya isu sebegini yg kian bingit dibahaskan di France n jirannya. siapa tahu, kalau malaysia memulakan langkah untuk bercakap, insyaAllah OIC takkan kekal jadi “oooo… i see.”
in my opinion and dream, i also hope that we can improve our newspaper to be more open and broaden the thinking. saya yg di luar negara craving for the better information about malaysia instead of reading a ‘non-stop-small-matter article’.
apa² pun..it’s only my opinion. kalau saya salah, mohon perbetulkan.
wallahualam.
Salam hormat Tun. How on earth Board of Directors of Sime Darby should be held responsible whereas Deputy Chairman of Sime Darby holds the Chairmanship of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB)?. We are aware that PNB is the major shareholder of Sime Darby.
Salam YAB Tun,
Dams are damned dangerous. Engineers are not perfect, administrators and legislators aren’t either. Humans are far from perfect.
Wassalam.
Assalamualaikum Tun Dr. Mahathir,
It doesn’t seem to stop the bad news. This loss by Sime Darby is really affecting me and my family and also millions of other people. The so-called blue chip company is the darling of the investors local and foreign. As a small income earner my money in EPF was invested in Sime Darby, now with such losses, what happens to my dividend. My monthly savings that I have was invested in Amanah Saham Bumiputra, and ASB invested in Sime Darby. So from both sides my principal investors lost money, will I have enough saving when I retire with all these losses. These losses cannot be due to error in investment, I believe its someone who had plan and make it happen.
1)Shadow government of US.Whether exist or not.
2)Illuminati and your perspective on it.
3)Both above issues in Malaysian context.
Thanks a lot Tun.Semoga panjang umur untuk teruskan perjuangan kita.
ASSALAMUALAIKUM…
YANG BERBAHAGIA TUN…
TOLONG KOMEN SIKIT..APA PENDIRIAN TUN BILAMANA UMNO TELAH LULUSKAN LESEN JUDI??TUN SOKONG KA…?
KALAU TUN TAK KOMEN, MAKNANYA TUN TAKUT..
WALLAHUA’LAM.
The chairman and the whole board of directors should be sacked because of this fiasco. I read in the papers a few days back when Tun Musa Hitam said “This is not Musa-style”…what style is there when a GLC lost 1 billion ringgit? The only style suitable for this is doggie-style…
dear tun,
what is in the world Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Musa Hitam as a chairman of Sime Darby Bhd doing there?. being a chairman, he collects allowances, mingles with directors, ceo, managers. he has the say on decisions made in the top meetings. he should be able to advice the ceo if something goes wrong. otherwise he is as dumb as the person who appointed him as the chairman. DS Najib pls do something. do not appoint a failed politician to the seat.
Assalamualaikum…
GLC mmg lama dah bermasalah …
satu demi satu akan tumbang berdasarkan prestasi semasa …
selepas Sime Darby..rasanya Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd bagai retak menanti belah dengan hutang kepada kerajaan melebihi RM1B…
renungkanlah berapa ramai orang islam melayu kaya dengan duit haram…
dearest Tun,
Thanks for doing the job that the opposition supposed to do. Not head must role but rather heads must role. It is sickening to know the government pipe(revenue) from Sime Darby has a leak, a bad one. It makes us rakyat wonder how bad other leakages from the many GLCs that the government owned?
In short, government of the day must put a stop to these ‘paip2 bocor’ with these ‘savings’ increase the budget to let say Education or Rural developement as most rural folks do not even have basic infrastructure. when ask for assistance, not enough budget….but we read in the papers, billions being squandered every other day. It is sickening…I am sure there is more to come…..
PS-comment by Non-jiboak has some good points,
We dont need the opposition….we need Tun
Apapun, kerajaan sepatutnya konsisten dalam meneliti setiap kertas cadangan yang dikemukakan oleh siapa sahaja sebelum menyerahkan hak utk meneruskan mana-mana projek. Lebih2 lagi yg seraksasa ini.
Masih adakah konsisten itu?
Malaysia! 10 hari sahaja lagi utk RETWEET dan menang 2 tiket terbang ke Medan, Indonesia dgn Firefly. Klik di sini http://blog.teratotech.com/?p=516
Dearest Tun
Thanks for your continue contribution to Malaysia and Malaysian. The issues raised in your blog is truely for the benefit of Malaysian.
Personally, the amount involved of estimated RM1.8b is beyond a genuine mistake or costs overrun. It looks more like someone had some personal interest/gain in this matter. It is sad to note that the Govt/Board of Sime/Securities Commission/MACC has all kept silent or given the general public the perception that they are taking a stand that after resignation by the Zubir, Shukri and whoever and all will be forgiven and OK.
This, I believe is what have eroded the public confidence in the BN Govt over the years. If people in the industry can visibly sees the big spending life style of certain individuals involved in the Sime Darby Energy & Utilities Division, I don’t understand how all those mentioned above cannot see the ultimate outcome of this RM1.8b “costs overrun” years ago. Worse of all, the people involved can continue to live in luxury may be for generations.
For layman like us we have to pay tax and try to make our ends meet without having to go to Alongs. Teach our children to study hard for good results so that they can get scholarships to further their studies for better future only to be questioned by our children when they finally get 10As with no scholarship at sites while their friends who are children of VIPs (like those involved in the Sime “cost overrun” scandal) get scholarship to go overseas.
So, it looks like it is OK to fuck up RM1.8b and resigned. After all the people involved in this only need to bear with market talk etc while they drive around with Mercedes or Posche and live in big bungalows, dine in expensive Italian joints, wear expensive watch etc etc etc etc.
For the hardworking policeman, he earns RM600 a month and have to make sure that he does not get killed and have to look out for MACC who is doing a good job to make sure that they dont collect RM50 bribe. If he decide to use his gun, he must make very sure that his can draw his gun very fast (before the other guy has his dangerous intention made known ie kill the policeman first) and he also has to make sure that he is a sharp shooter so that nobody will be killed (he can be killed, it is ok as nobody will question why the other guy killed him).
I think someone need to change the definition of the word “justice” in the dictionary. My children is asking me this any way and I have no answer to offer.
QUOTE: “I think the people are entitled to know when a public company loses over a billion ringgit. Proton lost only RM500 million so that is acceptable. Is losing RM1 billion also acceptable?”
I think it is not a question of quantum. What is so magical about the word, “billion”, more so when a billion US dollar is not the same as a billion rupiah and a billion ringgit yesterday is not the same as a billion ringgit today.
A loss is a loss. Even if the loss is RM1 million, the public needs to know. Why do you think a company is called a public company if there is no need for accountability to the public?
Many of the bloggers have written correctly. It is not rocket science tht these failures are immenent and the whole of Sime Darby top management should all resign. But alas, private enterprise and public are the same. Have you seen politicians resign after being in disgrace. Likewise, there is no need to resign.
We have embraced such disgraceful attitude. Pollies and management staff shld retire or leave the job when failed.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
Sekian, Wasallam,
I am not actually commenting on this article but rather would like to bring to your attention the appalling state of taxi system in Kuala Lumpur. I was hoping that you could perhaps initiate your view on this and perhaps get the authority to clean it up. It is really bad for Malaysia’s tourism industry and image.
1. I believe this is an ongoing problem bit has got worse over time.
2. Taxi drivers refuse to use the meters and always charge exorbitant fares even for short distances. A very intimidating experience for most tourists.
3. Why is that the city taxis cannot pick up passengers from the airport and airport taxis cannot pick up passengers from the city?
4. How much time and resource are wasted as a result of 3 above? Not to mentioned the polution created with empty taxis to and from the airport?
Hope you can write something on this issue to generate feedback from your reader and more importantly to trigger some corrective actions from the authority.
Dear Tun,
Good morning.
In para 16 you asked whether losing RM1 billion also acceptable. Well, this is chicken feed when compared to PKFTZ. You did not say anything about that! Why, I wonder.
Dear al-Din,
When the merger took place, I told my friends that we are going to witness a deterioration of standards in the plantation sector of the entity. From my observation the process has already started and it is a matter of time the books would show up. I believe experienced managers are leaving or have left otherwise Sime would not have advertised for so many personnel to helm its plantations.
I agree with you that Felda, Felcra and Risda should not be merged for the reasons you mentioned.
Dear Tun Dr Mahathir,
Sime DArby is a multinational company. Its losses may have tarnish Malaysia image overbroad. The leaders in Sime Darby has robbed wealth trusting in them by the people. What we can do is set up a task force to check into dishonesty and misappropriate of funds. All Board of Directors, The Chairman and the Tun Abdullah must give their fullest cooperation. At the moment, all of them must be suspended and Ministry of Finance must take over the daily running of business of Sime Darby.
If we proven that there was a group of culprit, I must say we have to labelled them ‘greedy bastards’. They must end up in jail forever since RM1b is huge amount.
My prayer goes to you Tun. Stay health and take good care

Good morning Ayahanda Tun,
This comment of chedet blog is about the macro-economics issue that will affect the entire nation’s direction for Wawasan 2020, 8 National Interests and Government Transformation Plan.
The Sun print media dated yesteday, 19.5.2010, page 12 with sub-title of SPEAK UP, Citizen Nades wrote the massive overrun cost revealed by Sime Darby Bhd was RM964 million from 3 projects in Qatar and the Bakun hydorelectric dam project.
Will this massive overrun cost be dealt fairly in a transparent manner? Will this responsibility be shared fairly and equally so that Sime Darby may re-gain its confidence of the Investors, Press Media, Economists, Financial Consultants, Rating Agencies etc….not to shift their interests else where?
If Sime Darby plans to swept this massive loss under the carpet like Paya Indah Wetlands project near Dengkil by asking the CEO to go on 6 months leave before his contract expiry date, Sime Darby’s share index will be affected for sure because we are now in the Information Technology era and today, people are more and more information hungry as times move on so that we would learn the past expereinces not to repeat the same losses. In order to prevent repeat of same mistakes, information technology system is so user friendly which allows information to be assessed easily with clicks within second, and this was what happened to the 1,000 points of plunge of Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the US government just could not cope up with such pace.
Citizen Nades, just like all of us, will continue to write and make sure “our money must be accounted for”. He asked, “Does anyone care how our money is spent? Is it assumed that government funds are NOT our money?
If the ruling government continues its governance responsibility like what they have done during Pak Lah’s premiership once Tun Dr Mahathir stepped down, BN will be denied a 2/3 majority of votes by people, not by the political parties. The minor lost of 398 votes in Sibu’s by-elections was the last wake up call, and don’t say that there is no warning in tsunami. Since the lost of BN has started in BN’s strong hold in Sarawak, this contagious impact will continue to roll and become a massive snowball which cannot be managed, and BN will be lost and the nightmare of being the opposition party will become reality.
Yes, the Government has compensated the loss of the project with RM700 millions.
PM Najib had denied that Sime Darby’s intention to sell off 10% of its shares when he was appointed to replace Tun Pak Lah.
Will MITI seriously look into the impact of power hungry Sarawawk due to this massive overrun cost by bringing investments that need such power now? One of the possible investment that it should look into is the aluminium smelter industry brought up by Tun Dr Mahantir.
Tun Dr Mahathir should not get involve in such matter because he would be accused of cronism by those people who dislike him. The best way is to be the coordinator by introducing the Malaysian contractor, since he knows them well, directly to PM Najib who is also the Finance Minister of Malaysia.
PM Najib would welcome the 4th PM’s move since PM Najib needs all of us from all walks of life to provide him with opinions on how to solve this not so healthy energy mix which would affect his KPI and his objectives planned for our beloved 1 Malaysia regardless of race, religions, nationality and, of course, the position that the person is holding.
We are now talking about the losing of RM1 billion in the country as the multi-racial nation here, the people are not so forgiving and will never ever accept such losses and the effect of their dislike will be casted in the ballot boxes in PRU 13.
Good day Ayahanda Tun.
Dear Tun,
1. As a shsreholder, I am angry and to know what has happened to Sime Darby.
2. The whole Board is responsible and the appointment need to be relook. Only those who are knowledgeble in their own field be appointed NOT the politicians or retired government servent. Politician can not run a bussiness. Running a business is different from running a political party/Government dept.
3.I realy hope this will not be happening to PETRONAS.
Regards.
Dear Dr. M,
Supply clearly exceeds demand here. I suppose it is high time the Sarawakians deserve free electricity supply, don’t you think? Maybe can supply the excess to Sabah for free also. After all, the riches of the land have been marauded as if it’s a buffet table over the decades. Time to repay them and say thank you, will BN???
Also, how big a smelter are we going to build in Sarawak? By my reckoning, with 300, 000 tonne benchmark, it is almost 13 times smaller than the world’s biggest aluminium smelter UC RUSAL which produced 3.9 million tonnes last year. Their biggest complex with an annual of capacity 1.05 Mt only needs a 2000MW powerplant to go along with it. Also, UC RUSAL is going to construct Lybia a 600, 000 tonne/year smelter with a dedicated 1500MW natural gas power station this year. So, again, my calculation tells me that a 300, 000 tonne/year smelter needs only about 750MW of power draw. To say aluminium smelting consumes thousands of MW of electricity therefore sounds like an overstatement, as I think it greatly depends on the output capacity of the smelter. Correct me if I’m wrong, cause I never smelted aluminium before!
Come on, free electricity for Sarawakians…
Thank you.
MY BELOVED TUN
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ENLIGHTENING US ON THE SIME DARBY FIASCO AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE HABIT AMONG CONTRACTORS IN THIS COUNTRY TO UNDERBID TO WIN THE CONTRACT AND CONFIDENTLY KNOWING THEY WILL BE COMPENSATED FOR THE COSTS OVERRUN UNDER VARIATION ORDERS.ON THIS CONTEXT I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION ANOTHER PROJECT WHICH IS SERIOUSLY UNDERBIDDED AS YOU MAY BE ABLE TO INVESTIGATE IN YOUR POSITION AS ADVISOR TO PETRONAS.THE PROJECT IS THE
‘SABAH SARAWAK GAS PIPELINE PROJECT'(SSGP),
COST OF WHICH IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE BAKUN.WHAT BOGGLES ME IS THAT THE ECONOMIC PLANNING UNIT AND THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE WHO PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE ON THE FINAL SAY WHOM TO AWARD THESE CONTRACTS STILL FAIL TO CURB THESE HABITS KNOWING VERY WELL THE MASSIVE DISPARITY BETWEEN THE NEXT LOWEST BIDDER AND THE PROJECT OWNERS PROJECTED PRICE. I WOULD NOT GO FURTHER INTO THE TECHNICALITIES OF CONTRACTOR’S CAPABILITY EVALUATION AND THEIR PAST PERFORMANCE RECORDS OF WHICH PROJECT OWNERS WOULD HAVE PERFORMED BUT SINCERELY HOPE THAT THESE CULTURE BE STOPPED.
salam Tun, what a shocker! I thought all this while those people incharge of Bakun project are really capable people in term of experiences and qualifications….???
Dear Tun,
After reading your article on Bakun, I am shocked. No wonder you have been criticising Pak Lah relentlessly. It is really justified. Your exposure makes people realise the stupidity of Pak Lah in collusion of your former deputy Tun Musa Hitam. They conspired to discredit you by cancelling or reversing whatever projects you undertook. If possible they would try to undo KLIA, NORTH SOUTH HIGHWAY,Putrajaya and Patronas Twin Tower. You are doing very well exposing Pak Lah’s folly. I would like to hear some comments from Wenger Khairy who adores Pak Lah’s sound and solid administration.
Truth must prevail eventually. Truth would eventually endear the people to you. You are really courageous. Coward dies many times, brave man dies but once.
amin tan
Salam Tun,
Wow… It was not more than a year ago in this blog that someone was singing praises abt Sime Darby. I quickly reminded that person about the failures of Sime Darby in managing Sime Bank, probably the biggest bank failure in Malaysian banking history…
When a conglomerate becomes too big, it can get easily blindsided. A large conglomerate needs to have strong check and balance mechanism, something the audit committee failed to do when they were not loud enough in highlighting the issues they uncovered. How can PWC be so chicken? My experience with PWC has been that they are too close to management at times, so maybe the Sime case is not that surprising.
And to make matters worse, how can the Board trust the senior management more than the audit committee? Senior management must never be above Board, that is basic governance.
Maybe not all of the board members need to resign. The largest shareholder must be fair and sack the right ones. Scrutinise the Board minutes and find out who spoke the loudest and who were the silent yes men. Sack the latter.
My 2 sen.
Salam TDM,
Zubir Murshid was the easy scapegoat. Somebody got to be held responsible and asked to go.
Like you said, responsibility on costs overrun must be shared too. It was impossible for Zubir to authorised that kind of costs overrun all by himself. I’m very sure there were plenty Board Papers being authorised by the Board in “taking care” of the costs overrun.
If Zubir is wrong, the whole Board is even worse. Show them the doors too.

It shows to prove that GLCs should not be involved in Government projects as in most cases they are not managed and runned by “real” businessman. They are not doing business with their own money, but in GLCs case, mainly government’s money. Any idiot can do it.
Been aware of the development of Bakun over the years. Know some of the cahracters involved. Tun, you were right as I had heard the same mentioned when the contract for the main dam was awarded to Sime Darby for RM 1.8 billion. At that price, they will lose their pants as nobody else can do it. True enough and proven over the years. But what the heck, Sime Darby is doing business with other peoples money. If they lose money, it is not theirs and in most cases in Malaysia, they will get away with it. To tell you the truth, most of the so called businessman heading the GLCs can’t even make a living by selling kacang putih. They will not survive in the “real” business world where you do business with your own money.
Assalammualaikum Tun
solution is capitalism has its limit & does not care what human really needs. time to change for resource based economy.

Assalamualaikum Tun Yang Amat Dihormati,
Sime Darby
1-Khazanah,being the boss of all GLCs,in theory is reponsible for Sime Darby. A week back Khazanah announced that it expect to secure fifty percent increase in revenue. Khazanah is responsible to advise the government on progress and problems face by GLCs, unless they are now fully independent of the government or someone in the Finance Ministry is conspiring with Khazanah.
2-Now Sime Darby announce a hugh loss. Some bloggers listed down names of all members of Sime Darby’s board. The list seems to be like a some sort of high powered government commetee, not high powered business organisation. Sime Darby, probably last year, sacked two executives for losses in futures trading and replaced by someone, believe to be crony of the chairman. Then there are proposals to take over IJN dan build airport for Air Asia.
Conclusion: 1+2= smelly
Air Industry
1-Air Asia though may be good for low cost travellers, compete openly now with MAS. Air Asia do not make profit continuosly and yet can borrow billons from overseas banks to buy new planes. Which means Air Asia is indirectly owned by foreigners. If Air Asia offer one million free tickets, it means that MAS has a potential loss on one million seats loading. Yet no local air industry master plan is required. This definitely do not make sense.
2-MAS chairman stay put even though CEOs and CFOs come and go. Profitable or not he remains. The question is what criteria do Khazanah use to appoint chairman of compenies in GLCs. Do these appointments require government approval?
Conclusion: Unless things are clear, than the best thing to do is to remove Khazanah top peoples as well as complete members of Sime board. Authorities always come with responsibilities.
Salam Tun, you are an advisor to proton and also the man the bakun project. If something like that happen of course you should help or asked the government to convene in parliament to explain details of their failure. Meanwhile the government has to explain to the public about the project failure. Remedy it quickly so the bleeding can be stopped. Many high profile cases have been highlighted in the newspaper eg Bakun, Port Klang saga, Sales of Italian Motor & Loss in Proton revenue.
i hope the new cabinet can establish better government or else the World will view Malaysia differently….
Assalamualaikum Kehadapan Ayahanda Tun. Semoga sihat damai didoakan.
Dear Tun Dr. Mahathir,
-Sarawak, The New Gold Rush of Malaysia thru SCORE.
Currently there are estimated 30 potential hydro dams in Sarawak. But for the time being, 8 dams (if I’m not mistaken) will be build to cater Sarawak energy needs. With combine might of these hydroelectric dams, Sarawak will be able to generate more than 15,000 MW worth of electricity energy (Bakun alone is only 2,400 MW) and Sarawak will be the main player for energy industry in the south east asia region. Seems like Sarawak has a lot of clean energy potential!
-Providing energy to Peninsular?
Right in the beginning that was the idea, it turns out, Sarawak energy demands takes into priority as Sarawak will need to develop its very own industry and to cater its future energy demands. Sarawak State Government projected (or rather planned) that by 2020, there would be 1.6 Million Jobs created (thanks to SCORE – Hydroelectric Project) and the current population of Sarawakians will be doubled to 4.6 Million. Unfortunately due to this decision, Peninsular folks typically TNB will have to go for alternative; Nuclear Powered Energy Plant to fulfill its own energy demands. Sarawak and Sabah has been left behind for quite sometime (due to unbalanced development compared to Peninsular) and hopefully with SCORE, Sarawak and Sabah could even up the SCORE! (aluminium smelter plant is just one small example of the coming industry and investment to Sarawak, labour cost is still cheap over there, more factories, industries will be opened at Sarawak provided the facilities and energy is adequate).
-Chinese (China) Contractors
The China man company is the only contractor in this world that has their very own ‘solid’ capital to start off huge hydroelectric projects, hence we engineers nicknamed the Hydroelectric projects at Sarawak (and entire Borneo) as “China Dams”. Why? This is because our very own local Contractors can’t afford to start off the ambitious hydro projects without being provided with capital support first. Say for example, who wants to loan you RM 1.8 Billion on a high risk project? Heck, who wants to borrow you RM 1.8 Billion without some other personal interest in mind? The solution is to get a ‘rich and stable’ professional contractor to do the job (hopefully with less bribery and mismanagement). Furthermore, our very own local contractors (from class A to F) are well known for NOT being able to complete their projects on time, for NOT being able to finish within budget, and worst, UNABLE to complete projects.
-Blame the Consultant?
Perhaps this is true, as the bulk of the professional responsibility falls onto their shoulders. But bear in mind, Consultants are only at the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Construction/Engineering industry are so complex that few ‘other people’ that needs to be ‘questioned’ as well if a construction project fails; The infamous Contractors, the Client themselves, the local authorities, and of course the ‘good’ politicians and invisible ‘middlemen’. Did I miss out anyone else?
-The New Energy Player, Zeus Lightning God!
For many years, Oil and Gas industry has always been the main players in determining the fate of the world economy. This will be change very soon, as the rest of the world, countries and governments are pushing for green technology and green energy solutions. The new players in the energy industry will be those who yield the power of Zeus! Electricity! Malaysian currently uses less than 10% from renewable resources (hydro) and about 90% of our energy demands comes from Coal and Gas powered plants. As the price of these fuel goes up (as proven recently again and again), it will take its toll on the country’s economy. Moreover, in the near future cars/vehicles will be powered by EV and Hybrids or batteries. Plug-in to the electrical network grid for charging. Mankind will be consuming lesser fuel. As fuel production capability will drop from year 2015 onward, this means ‘harga minyak naik’ (fuel price hike) in the next few years to come, higher than we have seen before. Thus, ambitious green project (such as SCORE) were carried out to counter for these energy shortage.
-Sarawak’s coming soon state election.
Being the richest state in Malaysia, those who yield the wealth of Sarawak’s Oil, Gas, and recently rumored Gold mines, and Hydroelectric energy will yield the power to rule Malaysia. I’m seeing BN and PR as 2 big contractors tendering their submission to win Sarawak’s wealth. I do hope that Sarawakians will choose the right ‘leader’ in the coming State Election. Personally, I still have faith with BN but if only they are willing to … (you know I can’t say it here). Alas, let the best man win!
Salam Yang Berbagia Tun,
Terima kasih atas tulisan Tun.
semula kepimpinan Lembaga Pengarah Sime.T.Kasih.
The megawatt of Bakun has led to megawhat? The loss of billions that is. The rakyat will suffer. PNB will suffer losses and thus our Amanah Saham dividends.
The dawn raid of Guthrie (part of Sime Darby) in the London’s market in Tun’s time has turned into a grand oblivion. Only Zubir sacked? The elegant pretender, musang hitam berbulu ayam, the killer of Memali should go Japanese style – commit harakiri.
Malaysia is fortunate that Anwar and Musa, two anachronistically ambitious individuals did not become PM by the grace of Allah and thanks to Tun. The score for Tun is effectively +2-1= +1.
In the process of empowering Sarawak with megawatts, I lost some RM10k. The coal power plant set in Mukah (again by the China dolls) took my 3.5ac beautiful land by the South China Sea. The state’s compensation was celah gigi. DAP won.
Salam..
Tok Det,
If you may allow me to digress from the main subject discussed here.
I think now is the most perfect time for you to release your long awaited memoir. The book, Malaysian Maverick written by Barry Wain had tainted a very negative image on you as well as your effort towards reshaping the economic scenario in Malaysia. Even though the book has indeed recognized all of the effort you had done for this country, it has anyhow prescribed a different version from the real story, especially on the Anwar Ibrahim saga and other controversial issues as well.
It is beyond doubt that you had your fair share of making wrong decisions etc, but all and all I strongly believed that with the release of your memoir, it may help to provide the exact and just answer on the whole story from your own personal story.
Thank you.
HESMEL FAZNEE FAISAL.
hmm…no wonder last time Sime was so serious to push the Government to pay the planting cost of new palm oil trees…
Salam Tun
Thanks for your exposure on Bakun. Actually we (chedet readers and also the Malaysian public)) don’t get to know the inside stories of how the Malaysian Government works unless the ex-PM decides to transparently tell us what has happened. It has always been that way. When a new PM takes over, it is always “everything good here, everything good there” and only “good” news are reported in the papers that it is quite hard for a discerning and civic conscious public like me to actually believe we have such a “perfect” government. So in the end, the Malaysian Govt continues to praise itself and heaps its staff with Datukships but in reality we are getting a “different” story from third parties. This is why I always like to keep an open ear and eye on CNN or New York Times or London Times or Washington Post and western media to see how a third party is actually reporting what our Government is doing so that I can get a more balanced view. Not to say I believe the news reports from the West outright but it helps me assess whether the Govt is over-praising itself in some areas.
10 or 20 years back, the Malaysian public might be fooled by such stories from the Govt since the communication technologies is not so advanced but now with the Internet and satellite TV such as Astro, the Govt must report to the public what it has done without bias – if it is bad or wrong, say so. If it is good and beneficial, say so.
This brings me nicely to the article on Bakun above. Actually I want to talk more about the general group of about 100-200 individual corporate Malaysian leaders who are head honcho CEO’s of our public listed companies and whether they truly have the fundamental capabilities to lead our listed PLC’s. I think too much emphasis is placed on things like chartered accountancy qualifications or MBA from Harvard, MIT, Wharton, etc as compared to whether the individual has the background and experience to prove that he or she can be a good all-round leader. For example, I just read a story about a past retired CEO who used to work with Digital and now being called back to head Axiata after a brief 7 months retirement. As soon as he joined the company, he implemented a corporate wide strategy that caused a lot of dissatisfied staff to leave their jobs with the company across the board. To me, just because this one person cannot decide to stay out of harm’s way and retire safely and play golf somewhere he cannot damage the lives of other human beings, many people have to start to find new ‘periuk nasi’ to feed their children and wife. I believe too many of the 100-200 individuals I mentioned above are too profit-oriented and narrow-minded without thinking about other social aspects of the functioning of a company such as to allow people to feed their children. Of course, really useless employees, such as those that are involved in crime and drug, should be fired but for the most part, I believe people should not be treated like products. I think this is especially true for the medical and armed forces professions where valuable human lives are on the line during the normal course of occupation.
The report you made about Bakun above just serves to confirm that even though previous management may have made thorough and careful study on a viable business aspect to benefit our beloved country and set things in motion, it is ever so brittle like a spider’s web because with a change in politician, everything can just be stopped just like that. I have got to the point to just smile when I watch these phony politicians play their games but my heart cries when I think if we are ever going to make true progress as a nation without the interference of ringgit-eyed politicians. I think the 2 main parties in M’sia now -BN and BA – have fired so many salvos at each other – that it is like a football match – first the ball goes to this half and then it goes to the other half.
Its time the Govt start to get serious at building the nation.
dear Tun,
When you have someone as prominent as Tun Musa Hitam ,a one time sifu and probably still a very good friend of the then PM Pak Lah-sitting as Chairman of SIME-do you really think the CEO Zubair or anyone else is free to do their job?Datuk Mahalil was practically sacked because he was not willing to ko-tow to Proton’s former chairman ,someone not prominent, I can’t even remember his name!
Most of the people sitting on the Board of Directors of Govt owned companies are mostly not real businessmen but rather politicians and top civil servants who are only interested to wrap up the meetings quickly so that they can do the tee-off before it rains. You will find the members as mostly yes men who are more afraid of men than God.And do you think these people can accept a CEO that’s truly dedicated ,passionate,outspoken,etc,..in short,a great chap -to really perform and make them feel inadequate? No sir, they are looking for someone who will not rock the boat and who will make life easy for them! And of course, when something go wrong- someone they can point fingers to.
Sack the whole Board -as for the Chairman and CEO get them to explain before Parliament-The rakyat has the right to know the details on how we got into this billion dollar loss situation. We don’t want recurrences.Revamp the whole Board culture if it is possible-perhaps Parliament must be referred to before any board appointments are made?Of course Tun,you know better.
Salam Ayahanda Tun,

ROYAL COMMISSION
Keangkuhan demi keangkuhan menyebabkan kerjaan tersembam ke bumi.Lebih menyedihkan lagi UMNO pun menjunam sama.Waktu Tun memimpin rakyat berbilang kaum hidup harmoni bersama.Saya ingat lagi waktu iti Karpal dan Kit Siang pun menghormati Tun.
We always love you Tun with all our heart.May Allah Bless You.
Tun,
You have been very passionate about technology when you were at the helm. One of the technology I am very sure of that really have a spot in your heart was Integrated Circuit design.
You set up MIMOS, then AMICA followed by SyMMiD. Just before you retired from politics, you gave you final try on the IC industry with RFID chip.
Although you gave your 100% on the projects, the return are a lot less than that. While the industry changed Taiwan into a modern country with this industry, we still lag about 1000 light years away.
Is there anything that we can do about it? Perhaps if the passion is still in you, we could achieve something bigger than ever been achieved in the past.
Salam buat Yg Berbhg Ayahanda Tun,
Sejak bila bahagian fabrikasi/pembinaan O&G dan EPCC Sime ni untung besar..? Rasanya antara projek pembinaan awal dia yang besar kat MLNG Bintulu, tu pun setakat kerja awam biasa-biasa. Tanyalah orang Petronas..
Sepatutnya Sime ni dibenarkan saja ambil-alih IJN – sebabnya dia sendiri pun amat patut dihantar ke sana untuk dibedah secara percuma (sebab tu dia nak sangat IJN..!), dah kronik sangat…!
Salam Tun Mahathir, this is my first time commenting though its not my first time reading your entries.
I think the Bakun project is one of the many excellent initiatives started in your tenure. Now that it’s completed, it will definitely facilitate a bedrock of power hungry investments in East Malaysia.
An example would be the production of silane and electronic grade polysilicon, the raw material used in the production of semiconductors and crystalline-based solar PV panels, which is enjoying rapid growth of which Malaysia is already very much a part of. I believe with clever publicity and earnest marketing, it will attract investors are averse to investing in China.
I wish you well and thank you for your insights.
“The best of mankind are those who benefit others” – You are certainly one of them.
Hanif.
Construction is a dirty business.
Incurring a loss of RM1 billion is even dirtier.
There is also some stupidity in accepting bids from Chinese companies. They tend to beat all the other bidders from the rest of the world, little that the client know that the quality is not the same and cost over run is inevitable.
Sime Darby should just focus on plantations business and plantations related supply chain businesses.
The entire Board should take responsibility, not just the CEO as major decisions and strategies normally require Board approval. This is a proper corporate conglomerate setup, not a RM2 company.
Pak Lah was responsible and still is. Pak Lah, I really really dislike you.
Habis jahanam semua aset. Next will be Petronas.

It is just another drama of Malaysian nincompoopery. Sorry, the PEOPLE have had enough!
other than private sector & GLC, rakyat today are more mature and knowledgable, they would liek to know how their money being used. what about the loses from Perwaja ? Selangor Wetland project, let us know more. as tun said, most people will be ok for the loses from i.e Proton project as it has directly created so many other benefit i.e job opportunuty and so on. where is accountability ?
In toto my comment in Che Det’s blog of Oct 29, 2009:
The Malay dilemma. Governance.
Corporate foul-ups of the highest order. Banyak musang berbulu ayam hitam. Many thorns in the flesh to be unpricked.
Who was the megalomaniac responsible putting together Guthrie, Golden Hope and Sime Darby. It flip-plopped from Synergy to Sime Darby. The three agriculture (mainly) based entities were on strong foundation and already giant enough to be efficient and chart their own ways. Put them together makes too bulky for good governance and fast decisions.
Whose idea is it that FELDA, FELCRA, and RISDA be put together. FELDA was (before Synergy-Sime Darby) the largest oil palm conglomerate. The three entities have somewhat different functions and responsibilities. Putting them together will cause confusion in foci and hence less efficient. What they can do is to fine tune for further improvements.
Size does matters but being over-sized? We hear none from the big-shots in the agriculture sector on this mega-mergers. They are just go-along gang, jaga periok nasi, or their voices muddled. Maybe I am wrong.
In-depth and comprehensive studies should be for such changes. There is no need to hurry to avoid costly mistakes. What is the hidden agenda?
Or we can just follow the leader, mumble and jumble our way. And you know who was the greatest mumbler of all!
Salam,
Maklumlah, setiap kali mohon kerja mesti ditanya pasal pengalaman bekerja.
Sedangkan kerajaan sendiri cakap ramai graduan menganggur…inilah masa tolong mereka.
Lain kali saya coret lagi…
Salam kepada Tun,
Setahu saya, projek Bakun tu dah lama sangat.
If the members of the Sime Darby board have any dignity in themselves, they should at least offer their resignations. The only reason that I can think of, that they are not doing it, is because of their perks, overseas travel, and plain thick skins.
Dear Tun,
Years after the government announced the Bakun project at great capital expense for low energy cost, we are here again in 2010. No dam completed with not a single watt of energy produced.
Instead we have created a big financial black hole in the government coffers and Sime Darby’s balance sheet.
What are we to think?
Billions of RM spent/wasted with no tangible development seen.
This is one reason why personally I admire your approach to governing. You deliver solid results despite many opposing the means.
Now we see leaders who deliver nothing except honeyed promises.
Salam Tun.
Bakun, Port Klang, Pewaja and in a little way, the upgrading works of the Sabah State Railways.. all meant to fail. Why? they had been in some ways legacies of your administration. How?
1)The awards of contracts now and then had followed your policies ie thru negotiations. The devils will lurk on the negotiation tables because none of the nego is transparent. Have there been any public exposure on the negotiations? NONE, all will be classified OSA.
2)The government officials never gave the government and the public early warnings if failures in cost overuns are imminent. They will keep them in their books and ensure payments will proceed (no hindrance)until the projects become sick. By that time to carry investigations will be difficult, time consuming and costly. By the time the courts are dragged in it will be some twenty years too late. Evidence become too complicated and easily “rejected” as the judges are in their prime an age and their brains are no longer that sharp. They just have to let the culprits go. The government servants would have died by then and their wealth transferred,
Tun, don’t try to insinuate that your predecessors are doing against what you had started. The had actually become more clever and only make some adjustments some they can put more money in their pockets.
The only solution is NOT surprisingly “REFORMASI”
Salam Yg Berbahagia Tun,

Assalamualaikum:
The whole Sime Board should be fired. Becuase of the losses, PNB beeing the biggest sahreholders lost money. At the end alll the malsysian lost money beacuse of their investment in various unit trust handles by PNB.
Tun Musa do the honorable thing – please RESIGN.
Dear Tun,
The Sime Darby losses are quite similar to selling of MV Agusta share for 1 Euro.
As suggested by many financial analysts and bloggers, all Sime Darby board of directors including the chairman should resign.
Here you go Ayahanda Tun.
These all the bunch of people that should resign as well. As we all know, leading the list is Pak Lah’s champion, now i understand why.
http://www.simedarby.com/Board_of_Directors.aspx
Wallahualam.
