POLITICS AND THE NEW ECONOMIC POLICY

1. The New Economic Policy has been denigrated by opposition politicians including Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim until it seems to be the worse policy ever conceived and implemented in Malaysia.

2. While Ramon Navaratnam blames the NEP as being the cause of foreign investors not coming to Malaysia, Anwar has condemned it for the abuses and corruption involved in its implementation.

3. Anwar loudly proclaims that the NEP benefits only the cronies of the Government and that the contracts, Approval Permits and licenses given out under the NEP involve corruption. He makes it sound as if the NEP did not benefit the Malays and other Bumiputera at all.

4. While it must be admitted that a few of the recipients of APs, contracts and licenses may know the leaders of Government or are members of UMNO, and that there may be corruption involved in some cases but the charge is not warranted because in most cases the benefits of the NEP has been enjoyed by almost every Malay and Bumiputera. In fact indirectly and in some cases directly it has benefited the non-Bumiputera as well.

5. For example every Malay child is helped in his education with free text books and often with free meals, Schools are built in the remotest areas where before there were no schools. Hostels are built for mostly Malay and other Bumiputera children so that they can live a better life and are able to study in better surroundings then in their homes in the villages.

6. For the qualified, tertiary education is readily accessible, with huge numbers of scholarships. As a result many of the children of poor families or of families unable to pay high fees, now hold university degrees, are highly qualified and many are professionals. As an example where before only 5% of the doctors in Malaysia were Malays and Bumiputera now 40% of them are Malays.

7. It is the same with the other professions. Just count the number of students in the public Universities in the country and those abroad on scholarships and one will appreciate how the NEP has benefitted the Malays and other Bumiputera in education.

8. It must be remembered that providing good educations, free book, food, hostels, scholarships benefit not just the recipients but also the parents. The NEP contributed most in the education of Bumiputera.

9. When under the NEP shares of companies were allocated to Malay applicants, they invariably sold the shares for capital gains almost immediately. This is because they did not have the money to purchase the shares and they had to repay the bank loans they had taken.

10. To avoid this the Government decided to create unit trusts so that the shares can only be sold back to the managers. Thus was the National Equity Corporation born.

11. Today more than ten and half million (10,500,000) Malays and other Bumiputera hold shares in these unit trusts with total holdings valued at one hundred and thirty-five billion (135,000,000,000) Ringgit. This is a direct benefit from the NEP. The unit trust make up a substantial percentage of corporate wealth held by the Bumiputera.

12. Felda, the Federal Land Development Authority was started before NEP. But under the NEP the role of the authority was greatly augmented. The settlers benefit from the spin-offs into the transport business, refining and marketing of the produce.

13. Felda has been nursed until it has become the biggest plantation company in the world. The settlers have much higher incomes while their children are much better educated. All these are due to the new economic policy.

14. Microcredit is extended to the smallest village enterprises and this has helped tens of thousands of Bumiputera villagers, especially the women in business.

15. There are now thousands of Bumiputera businessmen who benefitted from the importation of used and new cars, from becoming agents and vendors to the national car projects and also in the oil and gas business as a result of the NEP.

16. The best of them have grown big, some very big, becoming car dealers and assemblers, housing developers, steel fabricators, boat and ship builders, IT, transportation, ports and shipping, food and cosmetic manufacturers and many other businesses.

17. The privatisation scheme have also benefited Bumiputera business greatly, including the supply of materials and employment of engineers. Today they undertake multi-million dollar contracts in foreign countries.

18. Are they all cronies, these successful ones? There are far too many of them to be cronies. That some are known to Government leaders is to be expected because Government leaders in Malaysia are accessible to everyone as a matter of policy. They may be UMNO members. But then there are more than 3 million UMNO members. Is the Government expected to exclude them from the benefits of the NEP?

19. The fact is that almost all of those who have succeeded have benefited from the NEP. Those who show capability cannot be excluded from the support under the NEP. In fact it is safer to help those with good records then to give to untried people.

20. Why is it that the Government is doing all these under the NEP? The answer is simple. The Malay businessmen do not get opportunities from the private sector. They never get contracts or sub-contracts or contracts for supplies in the private sector. Even after they have proved their capabilities when carrying out Government contracts, they will not get contracts from the private sector.

21. On the other hand even when the NEP was being implemented, many of the Government contracts still go to non-Malays.

22. The accusation of cronyism is made without any real basis. There are far too many benefitting from the NEP at all levels and in all fields for the policy to be benefitting only the cronies.

23. There may be corruption but the NEP would not have succeeded to the extent shown if corruption prevails in every case. The focus on cronyism and corruption is political, not based on the real role and achievements of the NEP.

24. If there is no NEP, the economic position of the Bumiputera would be dismal. There would not be as many Bumiputera professionals as there are now. The disparities in all fields of economic activities would be very much greater as the national economy grows.

25. Some of the Malay beneficiaries of the NEP are supportive of the idea that the NEP should be scrapped. They dislike the benefits they had obtained from it to be mentioned as this would amount to, what the Malays called “ungkit”, i.e. to remind one of a debt of gratitude. Yet in Malay culture one should never forget the “budi” of another. As Muslims they should know that thankfulness for any benefit is enjoined by Islam.

26. Corruption and cronyism should be condemned, but most of the accusation is unjustified. They are motivated by personal and sectarian politics. The fair-minded must consider also the good achieved by the NEP.

27. It is sad that people who had benefitted from the NEP should want to deny it to others who are still in need of it.

28. Admittedly the NEP has not achieved the target to remove the disparities between races in Malaysia completely. But there can be no doubt that it has reduced the disparities enough to keep Malaysia stable even during the financial crisis. What is more, it did this without stifling the remarkable growth.

29. Have the non-Bumiputera benefitted from the NEP? They have. They have simply because invariably what is given to the Bumiputera must spin-off to the non-bumis. In some cases the Ali-Baba phenomena are exhibited, with the Bumiputera merely getting a small portion for just lending his name. But even if a Bumiputera contractor decides to implement the contract, he still has to procure building materials, skilled labour etc from the non-Bumiputera companies. Specialised work must also be given to non-Bumiputera as there are hardly any Bumiputera sub-contractor capable of doing this. In fact a substantial part of the projects during the NEP period went to non-Bumiputera. It cannot be that the non-Bumiputera earn no profits from these contracts, sub-contracts, supplies and skilled labour.

28. If there is no NEP and the contracts etc go directly to non-Bumiputera, then there would be no spin-off to the Bumiputera at all. The non-Bumiputera do not need Bumiputera for their contracts. The result must be increasing disparities in wealth between Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera as the economy grows. The dichotomy already seen in our Malaysian society will become worse when this happens.

29. Politicians must find issues to support their bids for power. But condemning the NEP can only be done by twisting or ignoring the contributions of that policy to political stability and the economic success of Malaysia.

  1. Assalamualaikum Tun,

Let me start off saying that I’m a proud Malaysian, and I do not mean to offend anyone with my comments.

As politicians, no matter what party you stand for, no matter the competition, the least they could do is show a united front, because at the end of the day, that’s what everyone should be fighting for, a better Malaysia. Ripping each other apart in public is not going to change anything for the better! What they should have done is suggest better options of their censures, if they think NEP is ineffective, then what’ll be the solution? What would be a more effective policy?

I’m sure no administration is perfect, and no manifesto will ensure a flawless government, but what our leaders lack is the ability to inspire people. I remember growing up listening to your speeches, thinking to myself, ‘Man I’m lucky to be Malaysian!’, but it saddens me to see that our youths and the people in my generation to just disregard the state of our nations government, and have no sense of national pride at all, most of my peers are looking forward to apply for permanent residence at different countries? Di mana semangat Malaysia? We’ve got history to prove that the greatest nations in the world were lead by great leaders, but what we seem to overlook is that they were also followed by great patriotic men.

  2. Salam Tun,

Congratulations on Proton in Making Buses and Trucks and maybe in Near Future Trains and Maglev.

Those CO2-free Electric Vehicle need electricity, the best supply of electricity is through Nuclear Power. Fossil Fuel Power Plant is still releasing out CO2 to generate electricity.

  3. Salam Tun

You said NEP did benefit non-Malay Bumiputras including Dayaks in Swak. Can you write an article specifically to support this view of yours. We want to know where we are now from your perspective as the longest serving PM. What can the present govt do now to help Dayaks?

Dayak voters continue to vote BN Swak to form next govt. However, there appears to be some imbalances such as small budget allocation from KL:

Federal collects RM15-18 billions in taxes from Sbh & Swak, excluding the 5% oil royalty.

And yet Sbh & Swak combined only got a miserable RM9 billions for the development for the whole of the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Compare this with the enormous amount of RM100 billions allocated for Penisular Msia for the same period. This RM100 billions does not include RM37 billions set aside for the proposed Greater KL Mass Rail Transit and RM5 billions budgeted for the 100-storey 1Msia Tower.

What is your personal opinon about increasing the oil royalty from 5% to say 10% (as opposed to 20% claimed by opposition)? This money can be used to help oil-producing states to improve their economic standings from among the poor states at the moment?

  4. The NEP and the Blame Game

The New Economic Policy was launched in 1971 through the efforts of the major political parties concerned. We, citizens, fully supported it because we thought our political leadership was wise and had experience. We thought every day would be sunshine and blue skies and that no one from the outside would do things to make us a little more difficult. We all thought it was a new beginning, a new era, the panacea to resolve many of our political and socio-economic problems. In practice what happened ?

    1. With the passing of our great leader Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysian
politics were mired in internal poitical tussles by 1975. MCA had just
changed its leadership in April 1974 after leaving the Alliance at
2.30 p.m. and rejoining it at 10 p.m. on 13 May 1969. It was not until
Tun Dr Mahathir became the Perdana Mentri in 1981 that a firm
    direction was followed.
    2. Each non-Malay political party should have created its own NEP Unit
to keep track of the ebb and flow of business in conformation with
the interests of its constituents (Chinese or Indian) and the precepts
of the NEP at the very beginning. The non-Malay leadership
should have spoken out if things were not right. And not to
complain and blame UMNO thirty years later. Did the non-Malay
leadership do this? During this period about 7 foreigners (Trojan
horses) who came to Malaysia with empty pockets and left with
    billions of ringgits.
These are the facts – the real politik. The non-Malays were let down
by their own political leadership during the NEP episode, not UMNO.
If the non-Malay political parties had been on their toes, Malaysia
today would have a fair political socio-economic structure envied by
some countries. They would have contributed much by way of
national interest and self-esteem and not money. We have now
finally seen in our lifetime in some countries how money destroys
the finest (self-proclaimed) through greed not national interest and
    self-esteem. Man proposes, God disposes.
    3. The Government in future should create a monitoring Unit (under
the direct control of the Perdana Menteri) to overseer the external
and internal activities of the privatised GLCs to ensure there is no
    hanky-panky

However, it is not late at all to push forward again through programmes which are practical and achievable with the precious resources of Malaysia as we have now grown wiser.
    1. Diverse peoples from ancient civilizations.
    2. A strategic land mass by the borders of an important seaway
    3. Natural resources
    4. Water.
    5. No major natural disasters.
As Tun Dr Mahathir has mentioned, its time we know ourselves and build on it. And through the 22 years of Tun Dr Mahathir’s administration, he did not use money as an instrument of foreign policy which might have caused the deaths or hardship of innocents. This is to his fame and legacy.

  5. Salam Tun,

    amin tan says …

    HBT 456 says

    553. As for Anwar Ibrahim, let his lawyers and The Common Court deal with him.

I fully agree with the above statement and hope that everyone must abide by the rule of law. Justice delay is justice denied. Therefore, the government should not allow unnecessary delay in the court process and no one should politicize it. The criminal should be put away for good so that we may have peace in the land.

Of course, amin tan & HBT 456 would be most happy Anwar Ibrahim is dealth with swiftly. He is just too dangerous as a free man.

Maybe its good if they ask that Anuar double to walk up & down Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad several times a week, with a smoking break every couple of hours or so.

I do not know what laws are used against him, i’m not a lowyer, but evidence suggests some of the laws are truly outdated, even ridiculous. I don’t blame the lawyers or the courts. They do their job.

But i wonder if our fat stomach politicians in this country ever really care for us. I’m surprised there are no laws yet as to how far a man can urinate legally in a public toilet. I would suggest a maximum of one feet ( excluding tool ).

Honestly Tun, how is it we have so many laws ? Is it because the lawmakers want to become rich or is it because the rich are lawmakes ? I’m utterly confused.

    Many Thanks Tun

Thailand pushes ahead with populist policies

Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, speaking in his first interview since his appointment, defended the pledge to raise the minimum wage to Bt300 a day, a measure that he hopes will among other things encourage the economy to move away from its dependence on the US and Europe.
“When you raise the minimum wage, it could lead to a rise in inflation, but it is not the sort of demand inflation that will be repeated into the future, it is a one-off,” he told the Financial Times on Tuesday night…
Thailand relies on exports for some 60 per cent of GDP and the recent market turmoil is likely to depress global demand. Mr Thirachai, who was until last week the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, said that increasing domestic demand could offset some of the impact.
“This is one way for Asian markets to build domestic demand across the region. Increasing the share of income of labour will lead to better domestic consumption,” he said.
“I’m hoping we are showing the way for other Asian economies in terms of investing in our own countries rather than relying on the US and Europe as our economic drivers,” said Mr Thirachai, a graduate of the London School of Economics and co-author of a book on astrology called Know your future.
In a recent research note, Phatra Securities estimated that if the new government implemented all its campaign promises, which include major infrastructure improvements and eye-catching headliners such as a tablet computer for every high school student, it would cost Bt2,300bn, or 20 per cent of GDP.
Mr Thirachai was not involved in drafting the campaign and although he said the policies “advance the aim of raising the standard of living of the general public” he tempered his support.
“I will consult with the civil servants to make sure we apply commonsense and the proper fiscal discipline to the whole plan,” he said. “I will act as a go-between between the aspirations of the political party and the reality of fiscal discipline.”
Various analysts have expressed hopes that the minimum wage hike would be phased in gradually. Mr Thirachai would not comment directly on the schedule, saying it was up to the Ministry of Labour.
Thailand’s minimum wage has lagged inflation for eight of the last 10 years and one of the main complaints of the opponents of the rise is that it will not reflect any productivity gains, an argument that Mr Thirachai is promising to address.
“I would like to explore various ideas how to help small and medium enterprises to adjust and improve the productivity of labour and increase the value added of their products,” he said.

G7 to seek ways to revive global growth

“I fail to see what the G7 can do. Those countries which support fiscal stimulus measures don’t have the room to do it, and those who have the room, don’t want to do it,” said Gilles Moec, senior economist with Deutsche Bank in London.

Perhaps Bro Anwar Bin Ibrahim & Co and along with Ratnam could present their astute point of views and the pragmatic solution to the Malaysia NEP – the BN conundrum?

Perhaps they need Strauss-Kahn to tutor them or that femme fatale Christine Lagarde in the IMF?

Najib is doing his version of Quantitative Easing – what do you think, Dr Mahatir?

  9. NEP should be used to help the poor, be it Malay or Non-Malay!

Not ALL chinese are well-off! Many chinese family i know are struggling to feed their family, let alone sending them to university. Have you not see any chinese driving taxi, selling vegetables at market, worked at bus conductor, live in kampung, etc? Don’t they deserve your so-called NEP as well?

Again, most indians are in no better position than the Malay as well. Have you not see indian selling kacang putih, putumayam, etc? Don’t they deserve your so-called NEP as well?

I agreed the poor Malay deserve help from NEP. But how about the other races? Are they not your Malaysian citizen? Are you not their prime minister?

NEP must be for the poor – be their race is Malay, Chinese, Indians, etc.

  10. Okay, you may be right. The NEP may have helped the natives. But over 40 years, the plight of the natives would have also improved over time. That would be obvious.

Now, the question. Whether there is any “significant improvement” of the natives’ living standard from the implementation of the NEP?? Should the government, after 40 years, review the usefulness of the NEP or vary it according to the passing of time? What that was formulated 40 years ago may have outlived its use or effectiveness today.

Another question, has the NEP changed the mindset of the natives? Empowering them psychologically to take on new challenges facing the world? NO NO NO!
Even in this forum, there are natives who are afraid to brace challenges. You know who you are, those who clamour the need for NEP will always be addicted to it like crutch or those who jeer hardwork and competitiveness as “kiasu”.

In that sense, the NEP, in my opinion, has failed. Given that the NEP has been around for 40 plus years, the native race by now should have said “Yeah, I’ll take on that chinese businessman head on.”

You can ship 100 native kids into university just for the sake of the NEP. However, are those graduates are of capable standard? That is where meritocracy comes along. It ensures that everyone give 110 percent to fight for a place in university because those people have the right mindset and attitude for success. After all, university education is a privilege not a right for everyone. For everyone else, there are colleges and trade schools.

At the end of the day, only skillful people will carry the nation to the nexxt level, not Malays, not Chinese or Indians.

Saya dikurniakan Allah swt 5 orang anak.

  12. Salam Tun,

    Congrats on Bakun Dam.

I suggest a Gen. 4 Pebble Bed Nuclear Reactor for peninsula Malaysia. This will greatly help grows our Production(Electricity for Mechanization, Robotization, Transportion).

Produce our way out of Economic Depression!

  13. Fight for Physical Economy, Production of Goods.

    [2:61]
And [recall] when you said, “O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions.” [Moses] said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked.” And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.

  14. Hi Tun,

The solution is very easy, just open the gate wide for the top talents, and advertise to the whole world that Malaysia has changed to be one of the most principled countries in the world! No more quotas, no more barriers, no more discriminatory measures, and let the best come in, and let the worst go out.

As for our own people, especially the poor, have a social safety net. Provide them with guaranteed free 3 meals perday, free quality medical care, and free education till the tertiary level. Where the money comes from? Well, if we open the door wide for the top people around the world to come in, the money will naturally follow them into this country. At that time, the government will have a lot of income to help the poor.

    Thank you.

  15. Assalamualaikum Ayah Tun & Bonda,
Selamat Hari Raya AidilFitri mohon Maaf Zahir & Batin.

    Salam.

  16. Dear former PM of M’sia,

Your posting brings me back to the reason which I started to comment on your blog, the NEP. I remember back in the time when you are the PM, the chinese quota to go into public university was severely curtailed ie only the best of the best can go in although overall their grades were better than the bumis. At that time, Najib was the Minister of Education who are tasked in the admission to the public university for all the student in M’sia. Some of my bumis friend with grades that are more worst than mine can go into public uni in the course of their choice and even overseas, but for the chinese we are only allocated to the course which the bumis did not take up due to the reason such as the course would promise less economic viable career prospect such as agriculture.
I remember your passionate support of Nelson Mandela over his imprisonment in South Africa as he was trying to liberate the apartheid system which the white have the right to marginalised the blacks.
I wonder if in Malaysia you can see the parallel between the marginalisation of the other races by your NEP policy. Maybe this word is very harsh on you as its a direct and blunt comment on whats is advocated by you.
Nevertheless as the saying goes, the more harder the challenges the more preservere a person is. The chinese managed to succeed against all odds although so many hurdle are thrown against them and they are not given the priviledge for many thing.
Yes NEP may have some benefit yet the mindset of people become lazy to work hard because someone is backing them from dusk to dawn.

  17. Askm Tun,
    ungrateful
Whatever have been said about you, nobody can denied you are the best Malaysian/Malay/Muslim leaders who had placed Malaysia in the world map by using many creative ways. We should be BERSYUKUR to Allah SWT that Malaysia had been accorded with your excellent leadership for 22 years.

It is ashamed to see today that a few ( everybody knows them) are very ungrateful lot, some even potrayed negatively to the world about Malaysia and continue the campaign as such, some even “sanggup menderhaka kepada negara sendiri ” with economy sabotages etc, ( short only of SOS to western powers to bomb & invade the country ). For what? merely greed for power & wealth to oneself …. ( these are a truly TTS -” tentera2 syaitan ).

Whatever criticism against you were well-defended as you correctly said ” those who try to please everyone, will not be able to please anyone”. You have to do what you did… “YOU DID IT YOUR WAY”. Even your classic handling of the financial crisis put many world class economy experts to shame. You should deserve at least for consideration of a Nobel price for that. But unfortunately, you are not the “darling” of the West.

As you mentioned in giving account to your success & failures in life, your biggest regret or failure was the inability to change the Malay mind-set during your 22 years tenure of the premiership, a noble objective indeed. But I don’t think anybody can do it except the Malays themselves. For that to happen, I strongly suggest – ISLAMkan the Malays, build their knowledge based on Quran & hadith.. to believe in themselves, with increase in their FAITH ( keimanan ) & ketaqwaan to the Allah SWT, insya’allah, Malays can change, be successful and be respected.

As for Tun, may Allah bless you longer life with good health, strong mind and happiness to continue to serve human-kind and the oppressed people in the world and may Allah show you the right way in this world & world after, ameeen.

It is too long to be reposted in here, suffice to say, I am grateful for it and I hope some day I would be able to pass the positivity along. My post can be seen here: http://wp.me/p4e0P-T1

In meantime, Selamat Hari Raya to Tun and loved ones. Wassalam.

    terimakasih Tun.

  22. Salam Tun,
First and foremost, I would like to wish you Happy Eid Mubarak, may you and your family always be blessed by Allah.

We all know that, the NEP is a policy that brings a lot of benefits for the Bumis and there is no doubt there. Corruption is everywhere in this world. What we can do is to minimize it through enforcing the related law. But, the problem now is we have a really corrupted opposition in the sense that their mind is corrupted. They are willing to do anything even manipulating things involving Islam so that they will get benefits from it.

This is the real threats we are facing today. The government today is too kind and to some people, weak, because they don’t have the guts to overcome this problem.

Many Malaysians have expressed their hope for the government to do something about that person, DSAI. The best way is to use ISA against him and his fanatic followers.

Finally, I hope that you will urge the government to be more strict in dealing with such a problems especially problem that may threatens the security of this beloved nation. Thank you Tun, thank you very much for you have contributed so much to develop and drive this nation from being an agriculture-based nation, to a modern, and sophisticated nation. Thank you Tun and Selamat Hari Raya.

    Regards,

Fight for Physical Economy, Production of Goods

    Salam Hormat Tun.

  26. Dear Dr Mahathir,
    Salaams

    Felda, NEP & Vision2020
(the paradox of umno is we need a new nep)

So sad that there is actually no such thing as your Vision2020; it is a paradox what you are thinking, Dr Mahathir.

Should not then the big felda corp now be owned by others and let only the 30% go to the bumis in the innuendo of the Vision2020 of a fair civil society, Dr Mahathir?

Therefore it is the Malaysia Awakening that is needed – not only for the PRU13, Dr Mahathir; or a new NEP?

    Terima Kasih dan Salam Takzim

Maaf zahir batin.

  28. Salam Bahagia Tun,
I have read thru all the comments here, and I have noted the similarities in the comments.

    1. The folks who wanted NEP to be maintained.
I find this “fight” to maintain NEP also contains some similarities, that is the Malays are still weak. That the Malays are lacking both in education and economics.
That the non-Malays are enjoying much benefits and are well off in terms of economics and educations.
So, I asked. Why are the Malays still so lacking behind even with more than 2 decades of NEP being implemented?
Why even without NEP aids, the non-Malays are still doing better than the major race?
Is it because they are born with a golden spoon and inherited businesses from their forefathers?
Why are they much more matured in education level as compared with the Malays? Are they “paying” off the educators since they have the riches?
And I asked. Why can’t the Malays be rich? Why can’t the billions spent by the government in implementing NEP be exponentially improved but instead looking very much like a money pit?
Why can’t the Malays who have the easier opportunities to go abroad to acquire the knowledge needed, be using them to help push the country forward?

I could only sum all this in to a simple sentences – “easy come, easy go”.
Things that were acquired easily without much effort needed, will be gone before one realizes it.
Giving a fisherman the fish instead of showing him how to fish, is tentamount to making the fisherman dependent on hand outs to survive.
Malays will not be able to sustain and exponentiate the new wealth that they acquired if they are not taught the skills to do it. They need to realize that the hand outs is not forever. NEP is just a one time off support to jump start one’s business ventures or education just so enough to let the Malays to participate in the real world of competition. This is important.

    2. Folks that are against the NEPs.
This has two similarities. One, NEPs is driving away foreign investors. Two, NEPs is causing hardships and disparities to non-Malays in both educations and economic benefits.
One – FDIs where the essential 30% local share must be given to Bumiputeras is viewed as a “ridiculous and absurd” by the foreigners. Giving the fact that they are here to economize the economy with their monies, and their expertise, why would they be willingly to part some shares to a local who may or may not have the skills or expertise to be in the business said. Even with the attractive tax reliefs and what’s not, foreign investors do not view generously the ability of the locals that deserved the 30% share of the company.
In addition, more often those that invested in such shares are somehow linked to the government. Person or persons who are appointed to the board may most likely to be politically linked and this bids some uneasiness to the foreign investors for fear of a government manipulations.

Two, the fairness among Malaysians in terms of economic sectors and educations.
If everyone were to be given a fair playing field where one competes based on merits, it will obviously produces the most “cermerlang” of a business company or student. If this condition is to be let alone to run its course, Malaysia in general will have an outstanding business environment and very capable graduates that will in turn hasten the development of Malaysia.
To some, NEP have retarded the general growth of the Malaysian economies, and causes the brain-drain phenomena to increase over the years. Non-Malays are asking to be “released” to progress with both economies and educations so that they could contribute to developing Malaysia.

Malays needs to be challenged economically and in education.
They need to be exposed to some level of hardships so that they could develop a competitive spirit whether in business or in education.
When one is thrown into the sea with minimum swimming skill, one would learn to peddle as fast as possible if he/she is to survive. Throw in the life buoy only when he/she is seen to have weaken. Let the person rest, and once deemed enough, remove the life buoy and the person would learn how to swim again, and soon develop skills as to not need a life buoy anymore.
The lesson learnt of near drowning experience, and how to swim better will be inscribed in the person’s mind forever. This in turn could be pass down to younger generations which over time will exponentiate to a better and competitive Malaysians in general.

In summary, NEP has it purposes. Its execution is somehow flawed, prolonged, and abused. It will take a very brave and courageous leader to admit to this, and instruct a review of the policies and its implementations.
Without such actions taken, Malays will continued to be “dikongkong” by NEP without with they will become frail and weak, and in a way, putting Malaysia out of the competitive world. Malaysia will always be titled “Jaguh Kampung” where everything is successful only in the country’s boundaries.

  29. the imperialist from the west will always have an agenda against the east…tun you have stood up to them …fought tooth to nail against them…there is none like you…we support u all the way….happy merdeka and salam aidil fitri from the bottom of my heart …

  30. Good morning Tun,

    608. Hmm, here is the detail of Esso Malaysia tetap milik SMC

    Oleh RAJA SYAHRIR ABU BAKAR
    [email protected]

    609. Joe Biden, the Vice President to Barack Obama has visited Premier China, Wen Jia Bao in Beijing recently, and I believe the global warming, financial and war crisis have become worst than predicted, what to do, that’s life and life must go as Malaysians.

    610. Tun still remember that I put up the brotherhood love between N9 and Pahang?

    611. If I think of brotherhood love, I will build the railway track that connects Singapore, KL Sentral, Bangkok and Kunming in N9.

    612. If I am selfish communist, I will build the railway track to by pass N9 in Pahang.

    613. It looks like Tun has the answer for that as 1st MalaySia, 2nd Barisan Nasional and 3rd Bumiputra of all races.

    614. I will not meet amin tan, Tun, because he is not my type of tea, tiap hari pun cakap Islamic religion teachings which I do not have the stomach for that, just like JB_FROM.

    615. Tuntuah, kadang2 maverik dan kadang2 hipokrit, I am wondering is he tired of being one in Malaysia, Tun has the answer for that now.

    616. To me it does not matter as long as he is capable in what he is aiming at to get himself pay off his hutang as rakyat Malaysia without causing sufferings to others.

    617. Due to tertiary education background and experiences, I can never be like them, Tun.

    618. Like what Chun Wai wrote in On The Beat, politics, politics, politics after Raya festive season will be a roller coastal ride in Malaysia?

    619. Have Tun try roller coaster ride before?

    620. The answer is no because at Tun’s youth period, where got roller coastal during that period.

    621. It is horrifying at the 1st ride, similar to our Competency Driving Test because the machinery is controlling our fear.

    622. After that, we will realize that our mind should be controlling the machinery.

    623. Will BN wins this time because PR has put Mat Sabu, a wrong candidate as MP in Bukit Bintang?

    624. Mat Sabu is just another product of culture shock due to poverty and oppression of past dictatorship, Tun.

625, Najib as UMNO Baru no 1 today must prevent the use of ISA machinery to charge PAS Mat Sabu because ISA will make UMNO Baru not liken in the USA, Middle-East, Europe, Asia Pacific, ASEAN Region and coalition parties, and don’t forget, Tun, Najib has endorsed BNM to set up a branch there in Beijing to improve our bilateral trade too.

    626. If Najib cannot prevent the use of ISA, then be prepared to see our KLCI plunges to more than 10%, Tun, which is very very bad for Najib and Kementerian Malaysia.

    627. The public awareness of political power of Tengku Razaleigh’s Parti Semangat 46 with the assistance from YB Ong TK now in Kelantan is all right to minimize PR political power, and it is good for BN and Petronas.

    628. Today, both McDoanld and Tesco have made inroads into UTP, Tapah, Perak, to develop this area politically and economically, both Tun and Najib are aware of that, right?

    629. KJ will not be able to make it to the Cabinet at this time because he has tainted UMNO and UMNO baru images in the eyes of other component parties and Malaysians of all ethnic races.

    630. KJ has only one political resort, that is barisan MIC youths in their stage of panda bear, waiting to be adapted by all component parties since they are still young and inexperienced.

    631. I don’t think MB N9, and Shahril of Johor too, welcome KJ in their board because they do not want to create a fear in other component parties which will not be good for them as Umnoputras Baru politicians.

    632. As for me, I am not interested in rubbish politics and fengshui, and I will never want my children to be one of them.

    633. Tun, whatever you have done for the country, people will not forget and Tun will be remembered in history.

    634. You did not make the wrong decision in choosing Pak Lah as your successor because you know UMNO baru machinery, your enemies and Najib’s backgrounds more than anyone.

    635. Najib should be more rational and more mature in politics today after going through so many bad experiences with the advice from Tun.

    636. If Tun has open house for this Raya celebration, I will introduce myself and my family to Tun as rakyat, no more no less as I have promised.

    637. Which party will I vote in GE13 since I am no longer a residence there for the past 8 years in PJ?

    638. Will SPR bring this matter in the Parliament to debate since Malaysia is a small population country with lots of pendatang asing today whom can be the citizens of tomorrow due to vibrant, rapid and dynamic economic growth by learning the current model implemented and adapted by Singapore EC?

    639. All voters of Malaysia must be educated to learn why votes are good for Malaysia and political parties to prevent brain drain, Tun, to grow the country to be more independent politically and economically.

    Good day, Tun.

  31. Selamat sejahtera Tun,

I’m proud to say that I’m one of the products of the NEP because without the policy, if strictly based on merit, at that time, I don’t think I was able to enroll into a prestigious university and thereafter to join one of the most successful chinese bank in M’sia. I’m very grateful & thankful of the policy. In the 80s & before, most of the malay especially those who were staying in rural areas were left very far behind in term of education compared to other races. I was considered lucky because I got the opportunity to enroll into one of the boarding schools with good teachers, reading materials & other facilities. If not, maybe I only manage to finish my education up to the secondary school as what happened to many of my other colleagues even though we were at par in term of education achievements.

It is very sad to note that many of the malay who have been successful in their education, career & business presently have been ungrateful to the government even though deep inside their heart many of them know without the help of the government, they will not be able to achieve what they have now. Not suprisingly that many of them are also condemning the policy which has helped them to be who they are now. They feel shame to admit that their success is directly or indirectly helped by the government. Sadly to say that their actions have jeopardized & denied the chances of others, those who are still in need of the government help. To me these are the peoples who are the real traitors of the malay.

Moga2 kehidupan Tun sekeluarga dirahmati Allah…..

  32. Dearest YAB & diKasihi Tun,

    1. EXCELLENT ARTICLE Tun! NEP has contributed a lot to the majority, bumi & non-bumi, and no one can deny this fact.

    2. Saya salah seorang PRODUK DEB.

Thanks Tun for being our PM for 22 years.

Saya ingin ucap “SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDIL FITRI” kepada Tun sekeluarga.

*** May Allah SWT bless Tun and family ***

  33. There is no real need to justify comments made by of all people Ramon Navaratnam whose circulation of a scurrilous and defamatory document originating from Australia about Petronas and Malaysian banks proved to be embarrassingly untrue. It is his creed.

As for Anwar Ibrahim his credibility is shot whichever way one looks at it. Anwar could very well have lived comfortably off the sympathy that arose from his beating in custody and his subsequent jailing. I do not suggest he was not deserving of punishment but that’s another topic for another discussion.

He, Anwar clutches at straws with his pathetic political entourage trying to make political capital at every opportunity. If he were not so driven by revenge and instead focused his feeble intellect and whats left of his abilities and reputation to those issues that truly concern the nation and his constituency then he may be able to regain traction as a politician and advance his causes better. But then again who are his constituency?

For as long as Anwar’ causes are revenge driven, anti government for the sake of being anti government and not in the interests of the nation but in the pursuit of his own faded and jaded reputation in advancing his personal interests, Anwar will and must fail.

His recent attempts at emulating Nelson Mandela with his speech from the dock at his trial is indicative of the delusions of grandeur the man suffers from.

India has been of late going through its own form of self cleansing. Indonesia continues to self examine in a violent way, Britain was reminded in a violent firey way by its marginalized citizens of its own vulnerability in this regard. Its not the first time either.

Malaysia’s opposition in various blogs condemn the ‘violence’ there as being vandalism and unnecessary not so soon after their own rioting called Bersih. Thank god it was not as committed for people to have believed in the ’causes’ of Bersih and Anwar to have put their lives and freedom on the line. I suspect that is because they did not believe but went along for the ride. It was a ‘pop’ political demonstration with a bunch of rebels without a cause.

Malaysia is not attracting as much foreign investment because liquidity and its scarcity is now a universal phenomenon and in crisis. Take the US, take all of Europe and take the US and Japan. These are traditionally the big magnets of foreign investment. They are doing badly, far worse than Malaysia could ever experience. It has nothing to do with Anwar or the NEP. Nothing.

Greece Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Spain at the forefront of this crisis are technically bankrupt. France complained bitterly recently when their fundamentals were questioned.

Like Barbarians of old they invade their wich weaker neighbours who suddenly after 0 years of being good friends and trading partners are enemies of a people they could not even spell the names of till recently. Take Libya and its oil now attacked by France and Britain.

    Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fithri

    Gopal Raj Kumar

  34. It’s seems there is an error in delivered and these was not done at the earlier.,NEP or whatever is not the agenda. The processed and implemented of such economics structures were not understood. Whether Government or non-Government members in the parliamentarians were not well debated prior to performed. That why the delivery were not successfully otherwise the issued were closed. Why no one mentioned about “KLCC architectures” internationally or locally because it was well delivered and successes, do not forgot it is “duit rakyat” as well. So why have to worried now? Why have to came with the issue of cronies or corruption? There are no issue at all in Malaysia, especially NEP or whatever has been done. “ungkit” only doing by a people in term of one person to another person’s or one party to another party and it has to be because hatred, guilt, selfish, jealousy, unsatisfied and etc after one forgot of a promised or etc or being bullied or being forgotten or attempted or let’s commenter decided what they want to say,. Gone let it be gone…..who ever benefits from the sources irrelevancy to have; remember “Allah” everywhere….”

  35. Good morning Tun,

    600. Sabtu Ogos 27, 2011
Penjualan Kepentingan Esso: Pemuda Umno Harap Kerajaan Dapat Berunding Dengan ExxonMobil

-BERNAMA

    601. KJ and LTAT will not be entertained mainly because of religion culture and its global market share in these products, no more no less.

    602. But, at least KJ is willing to explore and try out, which reflected his inexperience in local and global business cultures, but at least he will let young Malays to know their politic and economic strengths so that he will not rempitkan the young Umno members like what he had did in the past.

    603. Christians can consume alcohol, not Muslims.

    604. The beer industry in Malaysia is saturated, and San Miguel (top brand in Hong Kong selling at market price equivalent to our unit pricing of Coca Cola, Pepsi, F & N and etc.) lighter taste is similar to our Anchor, and Tiger beer (Singapore) is similar to that of Carlsberg, heavier.

    605. At last, Dr Tony Tan of Singapore has won slightly higher than Tan Cheng Bock, both started from PAP grass root, for the Singapore President.

    606. I am signing temporarily now to enjoy my one week Raya Festive holiday mood now, and please do not ask why I have made the mistakes again and again in numbering my comments.

    607. Selamat Menyambut Hari Raya Tun, maaf batin and “makan budi” spirits are well accepted in Malaysia religion cultures BUT badmounting is a norm that is despised by Malaysia religion teachings and business cultures.

    Good day, Tun.

  36. Dear Tun,

May I elaborate on your point No 25.

Indeed some wealthy and successful Malay tycoons who are Anwar or Pakatan Rakyat financial supporters strongly deny the success of NEP. These ungrateful Malay tycoons parrot what Anwar says and hoping that when Anwar becomes Prime Minister, they will pocket all the government contracts. They will bad mouth and condemn Tun and the government. They promote and champion the cause of non Malays. These wealthy Malays are ungrateful, selfish and never sympathize with the majority of the Malays who are poor. The government should be mindful of such destructive Malays and blacklist them from awarding any contracts so that they wont use such funds to topple the government. They are worse than the the non Malays when it comes to bad mouthing Tun and the government.

Samurai Melayu and many commenters are gentlemen and grateful to the NEP and Tun for helping the Malays. The non Malays should see the benefits of helping the Malays who are economically disadvantaged. NEP is severely criticised by the opposition Pakatan Rakyat for political reasons in order to gain non Malay votes. Even though NEP comes under sensitive issues which are forbidden to be discussed, but the the opposition took full advantage of Pak Lah weak leadership and relentlessly attacking UMNO and took away 5 states. On top of that, the shameful September 16 incident whereby the opposition attempted to entice the government MPs to cross over so that Anwar Ibrahim can become the Prime Minister. Even though such illegal attempts are proven and blatantly touted in public, Pak Lah remained hopelessly docile. I hope Prime Minister Najib would be more decisive and firm this time by disallowing any discussion on sensitive issues in order for us to have peace and harmony in our multi racial society in Malaysia.

The criminal should be put away for good so that we may have peace in the land.

    amin tan

  37. thanks Tun..

  38. salam tun
selamat hari raya tun..sayang tun sangat2
the best leader of all time!! salute!!

  39. Dearest Tun

1-Many of us often reminisce the 22 years of your truly colorful and ‘action packed’ administration Tun.

2-We have witnessed all the real exciting life drama of narrow wins at first to checkmates wins later in your facing up the internal and external challenges.

3-We also cannot forget your world class feats standing up to the nonsenses and threats of the Anglo Saxon nations and their financial agents emerging victorious and unscathed every time.

4- Economists all over the world still deliberate Mahathir’s capital controls of 98 and more so lately. The fallout of the western countries have shown that they too are doing just what they have condemned you of doing before.

5-Many times Tun you have really kept us at the edge of our seats. These real life suspenseful political battles is in my opinion not something people in other countries may have quite experienced.I am truly missing these moments again Tun.

6-You have set an awesomely high standard in PM ship it has become a big headache now for all your successors.Anyone not arriving to these standards will not be easily accepted by the rakyat the likes of me.Pak Lah was 512 km away from these standards while Najib now is 425 km away.My acceptable and tolerable distance for any new PM is only 25 km away Tun.

7-Please advise Najib to run faster and be more creative Tun…He is so damn slow and boring that the rakyat may just decide this PRU to choose the clowns from the other side just to be politically thrilled and excited again like in the good old days.

8-Anwar does appear more exciting as compared Najib. If he takes over later but can’t deliver he could still agitate the rakyat by blaming UMNO and the NEP for very badly damaging the economy he would require a long time to repair.

9-I think they’ll believe him the way they believe his innocence in the sex-video and the liwat cases.I think he has ilmu in making people gullible to him.

10-Its not working on me though. The tummy in the video I can see is definitely his.But that doesn’t mean I will not vote for his party.I may just decide that his other people may not be as sickening as him.Oh I really don’t know Tun.

    Thanks Tun

  40. Assalamualaikum Tun.

    Terima kasih Tun.

  41. Assallammualaikumwarahmatulahiwabarokatuh..
    Semoga Tun sudi mengizinkan ruang..

Syabas Pak Pandir08..For once I agrees with you.But..please..

    OFFER SOLUTIONS…..:)

    Terima kasih Tun.

  42. The scientific mind habitually focuses on facts and results, and this should be evident to anyone who has read “Doctor in the House” or particpated in your affairs as a citizen.

The successes of the NEP are clearly of a higher order, as is evident in your defense of the NEP. No words of the less gifted (objectivity wise) would suffice to describe the power and reach of the NEP which comes out clearly in your posts.

One the one hand, it is a success in Islamic statesmanship, which you have sought to enhance and take it to even higher levels. This is and should be our concern and main problem. That is, how to sustain the momentum by ensuring continuous innovation and productivity through proper freedom and outlest for all local talent.

At another level, the dominant West has a problem acknowledging the successful Islamic statesmanship model, and so is bent on destroying any such claims and derailing it or any vestiges of it.

Ramon’s thinking fits into this Western mindset, which ignoring its own rich heritage to be guided by truth and reality, refuses to any admit pagan or Islamic claim to success or the heavenly kingdom.

Anwar’s gifts of gab, unseemly greed for power, and freedom cries to bugger our democracy at the expense of our national freedoms, sovereignty, and dignity also helps the West’s agenda.

Najib’s focus on perfromance indicators ingeniously does in a way help to undercut Pakatan rhetoric and could have the basis of a successful consolidation of BN. But the logic behind the performance focus doesn’t seem to be thoroughgoing. or deeply informed – it doesn’t seem to reaffirm strongly NEP’s positive results, while trying to remedy the defects

The difference between the West and the Look East Policy are very deep. Will it ever disappear? Isn’t the gap what drives the rise and fall of civilizations?

  43. Nah.. Pakar ekonomi mengajar pelajaran ekonomi pada penasihat ekonomi (ex menteri pelajaran)

Setakat mengaji pengajian melayu dengan pengalaman berniaga sifar kemudian dilantik menteri kewangan nak berlagak arif bab ekonomi baik mengaji balik dengan mahaguru Mahathir

  44. Salam Tun,

  45. Salam Tun,

    1. I truly do not understand politics.

    2. But i know the very thing (DEB/NEP) that kept us in peace, is now the thing that is driving us apart.

    3. It’s time to throw it out the window and replace it with something better. That’s the job of politicians and their think tanks.

    4. Given the insincerity and snaky moves of all politicians around us, us public will need divine intervention.

    5. I still do not understand politics. Would the world be better without politicians ?

    Thank You Tun

  46. Salam Tun.

Even though NEP has greatly transformed the wellbeing and betterment of Bumis, we are still lagging far behind the non-Bumis in education and economy.

Utmost priority must be to ensure Bumis are well trained and received tertiary education to at least the same percentage/fraction as of the non-Bumi achievers, and only then will the Bumis be in a position to compete with the non-Bumis economically.
The israelis are doing ’all it takes’ in preventing the Palestinians to further/obtain higher education because they know the consequences of how/what very educated Palestinians can do to destabilize them.

Ali babas are mostly parasitic Bumi individuals that can perfectly be referred as uneducated garbage, and they easily fall prey to the likes of Ean Yong’s racist efforts to intimidate Bumis with just minimal token in return, or YTL’s ways to achieve the required prerequisite 30% Bumi participation in the government contracts awarded to them without actually having to give out any sub-contract works to Bumis at all!!

But these ali babas will eventually be phased out provided PKK can start to become more proactive and less corrupt, and also if more educated and responsible Bumi businessmen are available.

There is no Bumi politician with greater number of cronies than that Anwar maniac. In just 5 years as MOF, he created so many business ‘rag to riches’ cronies (by directly giving out contracts and licenses) that will undoubtedly support him vehemently when needed.

Not satisfied with the country experiencing foreign trade imbalance/deficit at every single month of his tenure as MOF, he befriended the Sososes & Camdesscuses to destroy Malaysian economy and to blame Dr. M for the turmoil, which fortunately did not become reality.

Anwar the maniac later successfully baited the non-Bumis with the infamous carrot “I’ll abandon NEP”, which the non-Bumis warmly welcomed thinking they can now actually bury the Bumis economically! Even after knowing very well of Anwar’s corrupt & hineous characteristics won’t stop these non-Bumis embracing their new-found-saviour-cum-terminator!!!

Well, well, well. I look forward to BN winning PRU13 with 2/3 majority from almost Bumis only seats just like the recently concluded Sarawak state elections, and having the large cake all to Bumis only!

PAS is now ‘Parti Aslam-murtad SaMalaysia’, and PKR’s carca-marba ways are clearly more pronounced with every new calendar day!

Just because the people’s hatred of that PM ‘no quality’ Pak Dol & s.i.l. budak kurang _jar(KJ) team caused us to cast 350,000 spoilt votes and the also large numbers that preferred to stay home during PRU12 which enabled them to win additional seats, dah mula PERASAN konon2 rakyat sokong mereka!!

Jangan la jadi macam that glamour andrewtay, perasan sangat dia tu indispensible lah, brain drain lah. Apa punya clever brain ni datang melawat website seorang dictator yang melayani & menyiarkan semua entrynya! Dah tu tak hormat & kurang _jar pula, kalau tak mahu panggil gelaran Tun sekurang2nya Dr. pun dah okay. Bongok macam Pak Dol, kurang _jar macam budak KJ!!

  47. Salam Tun and fellow bloggers,
    1. Thanks a million Tun for not giving up in your struggle to help the people of Malaysia – yes, the Bumis and non-Bumis benefitted a lot from NEP.
    2. The non-Bumis who are not happy with NEP obviously are the anti 1Malaysia concept, they are greedy and if they’re politicians, its for their own agendas.
    3. Bumis, like anwar himself, saying bad things about NEP is for his political survival; this guy will do and say anything – in indonesia, he said bad things bout us, among the chineses, he will please them to anything, to the jews he will say and do whatever they want him to do, as long as he gets that PM post.
    4. other bumis, yes I agree with you Tun, its embarrassing to admit that they’re doing fine now due to NEP, no way, it makes them look stupid and highly dependent..no way, especially when ‘diungkit’, the guilty feeling is there, but will not admit…some people are plain SICK. Tak sedar diri…
    5. but I dare say, the enemies of the malays know our weaknesses..too caring, too emotional, too sensitive, too apologetic…so just look at the malays in their eyes and say ‘you malays are lucky, this is your country, you can easily get what you want…but, we have to go through pains, etc…’ I bet you, the malays will melt, kesian…that’s why the malays are fighting on behalf of non-malays to throw away NEP or the Bumi special status…my god, tak sedar tengah kena main..nilah baghal namanya.
    6. How come no one, especially the malays argue why the non-malays can use their mother tongue languages? Why never question them why the unpatriotic ones cannot be strip of their citizenship – that the government cannot strip them? But anything for the malays, they will question.

Thank you Tun, please do not give up in your fight for the truth.

  48. I’m the product of NEP and proud of it. It gave me the opportunity to further my studies of which without NEP, it will be just a dream…. Thanks Tun…

  49. Salam Tun dan pembaca budiman semua,

    1. Saya bersyukur lahir dan menjadi warganegara Malaysia.

    sikenit
(ps* MiddleAges: U cant really call Monaco a country. Its more a garden city. Only has about 40,000 citizens. Mana aci…. I want a Country… Like ours… various races, various cultures, various ethnicities, more than 5 million people laa… but no crimes, no disasters, no etc etc etc…..u know.. tell me again when u find another one that fits the bill)

  50. Dear Tun,

I watched your interview on History channel in Astro. Well, I have to say that I admire your ability and I have been a long loyalist of you. I don’t think there could be any other PM that can replace you. During your reign as PM for 22 years (I was born the year you took oath as PM) there have been ups and downs and I know that you are not perfect also, you have to handle a whole nation and bunch of ministers who eyes at your seat also. A good leader sometimes have to be brutal also, you were called dictator by some people. But I have to agree that sometimes a leader have to be a dictator to get things right. He has to be ‘lantang’ in speech and make sure people respect you.

What I’m trying to say is that, I don’t understand that when you say that you as a doctor have to heal the country by ammending the constitution that separates the power of Judiciary and Executive power.

Don’t you think that politicians have the power to influence the Judge and the Judiciary if they were found guilty or has done wrong ?

Can they (politicians) use this ammended constitution to work things or escape from their wrong doings (if there is any) ?

Can they (politicians) use the Police as their armour if anything goes wrong with them?

You have introduced tremendous ideas, such as Look East Policy, through that we had the ‘punch card’ and everything else, but honestly, now when you are retired, do you think the ammendment of that constitution gave a negative side effect?

Why am I asking this is, I believe every word that you say and keep it as a ‘pedoman’ hidup. I can’t take it when people slander you, especially opposition and even from present government that you have screwd up the Malaysian politics. As the effect of that, Politicians who is in favour of the government always gets away from being punished. This may draw attention to your ex-deputy who is on trial now. I somewhat feel pity on him, I saw pictures of both of you in happier times in the net and the inteview. Anwar has made the court is second home, almost all the time he is there. As a lay man on the street, I seriously dont know what did happen that a man like this has to suffer great persecution from all coners. Some people say, because he didnt agree with you, then you put him in jail and etc…but I DON’T BELIEVE THAT. Coz deep in my conscience saying that you won’t do that. Have you thought that someone might fool you or tell lies to you so that you can fire him ? this is just a thought…

Anyhow, I really respect you no matter what. I don’t think I can get answers to all that above, but maybe you can answer it yourself for your own. And I have to say and for most Malaysians that I am a product of your legacy and I’m proud of that. If I’m not successful, it is because of my own attitude, I would not blame the government. But looking and the future with many racist and racial issues coming up in our country, I suddenly feel that what happen to our vision to have BANGSA MALAYSIA?.

Selamat Hari Raya to you and your family.
    May God Bless you.

  51. Salam Tun Mahathir

  52. My take is that it is not not about NEP or any other good Government initiative.

It is all about corruption and people having self interest as their agenda.

Also, people who are not suppose to be in the limelight but issisted to be in the limelight for what ever reason.

  53. Digahayu Tun Berdua,
    Selamat Hari Raya Tun Sekeluarga.

  54. ground rumblings pitting muhidin against najib…with tun the mastermind lending weight for muhidin….rumours has it that you wanted your son to climb further up…oppositions are so confident to chalk up even a 2/3 victory come the next GE…are we seeing ’emperors’ fiddling while ‘rome’ burns?

  56. Tun, I do not and will never endorse NEP or affirmative action, whether given to the Bumiputras or to the indigenous people or even to the Chinese at all.
Tun, you are where you are today because you have slogged hard and tough in your study to become a doctor, a Prime Minister & now an adviser. Life is a process where you need to work hard to get where you want.
Similarly, while some may be Bumis or Chinese or Iban and so forth but they must be deservingly so and meet the quality to secure the coveted position. This is done to raise the standard of practice. I am sure you would not want a half-baked surgeon to operate on you either. Put these people on the global stand without help and they must be affable & able to speak fact & logical too.
Do you, Tun, condone someone who can become a Prime Minister by act of coup, a reckless doctor who bought his qualification or an adviser without global experience at all ?

  57. Tun, I made a comment in your last posting on NEP. My question to you now is if you are in power today, how will you do it differently/improvise on the NEP? Will it be based on real needs or still based on bumi or non-bumi thingy?

When God created this Bumi Malaysia, did the almighty allocate Bumi Malaysia to certain race? I believe the God created an ecosystem for us human regardless of race & religion to coexist with other things he created in the world. The more we say about Bumi and Non-Bumi in our country the more diversive we will be. Categorizing Rakyat Malaysia to Bumi and Non-Bumi will not bring us anywhere. This is only good for Racial Politics. I agree with you that the NEP has been successful in helping the Bumis to be successful today BUT in today’s context, if the NEP is modified to cater for “Malaysians who are in need”, it will be the greatest transformation in our country. If majority of the poor and needy are still Bumis, then NEP will still serve its original goal of the old NEP and at the same time those qualified non-bumis are also given the same help.

  58. SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG
    AYAHANDA RAKYAT TUN
    Izinkan,

    YES! YES! YES!
we support all the 29 points though our application for our child’s education was unsuccessful. We have had to find our ways to finance our princess tertiary education…

Syukur alhamdulillah.. with a little helps from friends, our princess passed with a Masters degree in Architecture.. there’s a will, there’s a way.. with or without the benefits under the NEP!

Although we had friends in high places, never did we took advantage or abuse their positions and our requests and applications were almost all unsuccessful .. but never did we condemned the NEP.

We may be disappointed but when looking at other Malays and Bumiputeras who enjoyed the benefits, who were successful and had propered, we still could afford to smile and be proud of the NEP!

    YES! YES! YES!
All that have been said by Ayahanda Tun are very true and we, the grateful Rakyat of this Beloved country must appreciate and acknowledged the success of the NEP which had directly and/or indirectly benefited all strata of our society..

The ‘sins’ of corruption and nepotism… these practices existed in any society and/or country…be it the developed, developing or underdeveloped for as long the words ‘greed and selfish’ exist in the dictionary. To those ‘ sinful ‘ people, we say ‘May Allah have mercy on their souls’

    YES! YES! YES!
Let us all look at the bigger picture of the NEP and be happy and grateful of the peace, prosperity and harmony the Rakyat enjoyed since!… only the ingrates are rueful and unappreciative of the NEP.

‘WAWASAN 2020 BUKAN TITIK PENYUDAH BAGI JENERASI MENDATANG IA BERMULA’

    ALFATIHAH, AMIN.

  59. NEP accelerated the progress of Malay substantially. At early stage FELDA creates Malay “estates ” as well make them plantation workers that had benefited indian employment for along time in the estates sector. It also ease the landless. Education provide opportunities to employed in the goverment sector beginning in the 70s later in the factories when Malaysia move into industrialization. The spill over creat bussiness for not only Malay but also other races. For Malay in halal food stalls and tailoring boutique etc. Infact FELDA created wealthy Chinese through land clearing contracts at early stage. NEP thus benifited Malay directly or indirectly. Goverment related bussiness almost non until 1980s before Malay made enough linkage for bussiness. Cronism is DSAI slogan in 1998 during Asia Economic Crisis that hit Malaysia. In fact this word started in US and echoed through SEA to explain for the Crisis. In fact Cronism is actual Credential Networking which work in bussiness as well other field. Chinese had been using this for along time and still are using. When is used political motive the word is stigmatised.

  61. Good posting Tun. Malaysian need constant reminders of what they have. Those ugly politicians with baseless accusation, they are at the end of their road. They have no solid base to stand up on their words. They are deteriorating.

    Selamat Hari Raya Tun.

  62. Assalamualaikum Tun,

The NEP is a tool to ensure all the races gets a fair share of the nation’s wealth. While the NEP tries to help the bumiputras, it does not mean the poor from other races are neglected. The government through the various agencies are helping them too. Anyone that says, the non-malays especially the poorer ones are being neglected by the government is a big liar.

I totally agree with point 27. There are Malays who are now very successful and benefited from the NEP while they were young. Now that they are successful, they are against the NEP.

Whether we care to admit it or not, the Malays still have a strong PHD (Perasaan hasad dengki). The ironic part is, their envy is only towards their fellow brethren race. Whenever a Malay is successful, some Malays are quick to say that this Malay gained due to cronyism and corruption. Whenever the successful Malay has gone down, they clap their hand in happiness.

That the Chinese are controlling the economy, own the businesses, this Malays are not envy at all. To these Malays, they are happy if all Malays remain poor.

When I talked about the top 10 richest Malaysians are non-malays, it shows the non-malays are not deprived of being rich due to the NEP. If they work hard, they can be rich. The NEP in no way stop them from becoming rich.

It is good that I am not the Prime Minister like Tun or Dato Seri Najib. The position carries huge responsibilities. Sometimes, you have to do something you know is right even if it means being unpopular.

If I was the Prime Minister, I would have given in, implemented meritocracy and abolished the NEP. For a short while I would be very popular.

Then reality would set in, the delicate balance between the races broken as one race becomes too rich, and the other becomes too poor. 13 May might then happen again. Many lives will be lost.

I would been booted out as Prime Minister. Studies will be done be done as to why the racial riots begin again, and a new NEP formulated.

And so the cycle begins anew.

  63. great article tun! far than eye opener… only jealousy and ignorant blatantly blame the NEP is not successful.

  64. Tun,
I think you should by now show much more concern about the issue of using risky yardstick of RFU (relative fluorescence units) on DNA profiling test in Malaysia than wasting our time on listening to your grumble about the non-commendable history of NEP (New Economic Policy). To ignore Anwar Ibrahim for the time being, I wonder how many innocent criminal suspects had already been wrongfully hanged due to misled court judgement during your 23 years’ Administration as the Prime Minister of Malaysia as a result of the questionable (or possibly faulty) DNA profiling test being conducted by the half-past-six “experts” from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia.

  65. Dearest Tun

//29. Politicians must find issues to support their bids for power. But condemning the NEP can only be done by twisting or ignoring the contributions of that policy to political stability and the economic success of Malaysia.//

1-Anwar is that hypocrite who had himself abused the NEP and his MOF powers to enrich his own cronies as Tun have exposed in the 98 UMNO assembly.Tun was then trying to show that Anwar is just like the guy he has then accused of practising ‘nepotisma dan kronisma’.

2-These are the ‘ lobangs ‘ great politicians like Anwar would be able to leverage to the maximum. He wants the non Malay votes 100% this time around now that the Malay votes have split 50:50.

3-Nothing can win the Chinese and Indian votes better than exploiting the only one issue that has been disturbing their sleep all these while reminding them constantly of their second class immigrant status who doesn’t deserve any care from the Govt, the NEP.

4-All Anwar need to do is put up a really innocent suci look and then cook up,and dramatize the evils of the NEP as much as he can , and promise, the moment he wins, to end this evil once and for all ,I tell you the non Malays will surely be on his side.I think the NEP is a sure vote winner for PR.

5-Yes Tun the whole world knows just how successful the NEP has been under your world class leadership for 22 years. But the whole world also perceived that corruption is also not at a superficial level in Malaysia during that ‘boom’time before the bubble burst in 97.Even your own party is beyond control due to this corruption you would lament come every general assembly.Have you forgotten?

6-Of course you call it differently for your beloved UMNO people-‘ politik wang’ so that it sounded makruh instead of haram.

7- I seriously think that BN’s survival now will depend very much on this NEP.In this struggle now UMNO will do it alone as MCA and MIC will be rendered impotent. If they support the NEP they are dead.If they are against it UMNO will make sure they’re dead.

8-Najib must decide if he really must win back the non Malay votes or not?If yes,he must forget that ‘One Malaysia’ slogan,it is just too cheap . UMNO must now be ready to give its costliest ever to secure the non Malay votes.

9-The NEP has overstayed its welcome .Yes I agree we still need to help those people who are still stuck in that vicious circle but remember Tun there are also plenty of the non Malays also stuck in there .Help out all those who need the help Malays,Chinese,Indians and others.Malaysia is already 54 years old dah hampir nak pencen, don’t you think its time for ‘ Malaysia oh Malaysia’ pulak Tun?

10-To help UMNO consider, just think about what will happen when PR wins, and the NEP eventually relegated to the National Museum .They will begin a reign of terror that will subject the BN to all sorts of investigations on allegations after allegations. In order to appear credible, PR need to prove to all its supporters that these people were really corrupted as they have been telling during the PRU.The judges, the prosecutors we know mostly are on whose side then …so is BN ready for these trying or what Anwar would call payback time ahead?

11-So Najib either got to make sure he has enough funds to win all the Malays to support the BN using his infamous ‘I help you you help me strategy’ or if he sincerely can’t afford it, consider an unexpected but a strongly recommended ‘surrender’strategy.

12-How about introducing a newer morally right economic policy to replace the existing in the last minutes? This will surely put PR out of balance because this is their only issue to win the Non Malays.Bring a one that all Malaysians can and want to believe.Yes,surrender to win back.

13-Of course the existing UMNO votes would be at stake. Najib must really do lots of roadshows to explain to the Malays of why its time for Malaysia to be one strong united nation to brace for the uncertain tough times ahead.Leverage fully the US and EU economic fallout now. This is that time a politician must bring out everything he has got from the tool box.Get ready the crocodile tears.Get ready everything. Its do or die time.

14-Najib must decide what is right for the country based on the right principles not for the sake of being popular with every one.If God is pleased with his decision that is all that matters. If Tun and Perkasa and all the other Malays must hate him for fearing God more, then be it.Well, not that he has a choice anyway.

15-Just a sincere view from a politically naive and hungry voter waiting for the buka puasa time with nothing better to do Tun.

    Thanks for tolerating me Tun.

  66. Salam Tun,

Although there are benefits form the NEP, unfortunately many of these recipients either failed to repay their loans or failed to return to our beloved country to serve. This is a very sad fact. If the government force them to return then they will accuse the government of cruelty. Some became very wealthy only to cut off any opportunity to the future generations as they want to secure the wealth for their family and friends. Even the wealthy still wants scholarships for their children because they claim that they are entitled to it. The government created the NEP and did what it thought was necessary. Unfortunately, many of the recipients forget the help they got. They fail to pay it forward then blame the very people that created the opportunity paving the way for their current success. It is this that resulted in the current state where the NEP is seen to have failed . The people failed ! Not the NEP. Of course the government should play an active role to ensure the abuses are not repeated but the government has failed miserably on this. Maybe it’s time for a major review of the policy. Enforcing strict criteria when selecting the recipients is of paramount need to ensure the survival of policy but of course, all good things must come to an end. Manifesting that the end is near can jolt everybody out of their day dream mode and at least kick start their own journey towards success.

  67. Dah 54 tahun Merdeka pencapaian bumiputra masih 18% walaupun markah lulus 30%..takkan nak bagi UMNO/BN 100 tahun lagi untuk lulus..Ini bermakna bijak pandai melayu dalam UMNO telah gagal selama 54 tahun..markah 18/100 bermakna GAGAL & KELUAR untuk UMNO/BN..beri peluang pula bijakpandai melayu dari Pakatan Rakyat untuk mencapai sasaran minima 30% pencapaian ekonomi..

Selamat menyambut hari raya aidilfitri…
    Ikhlas dari,
    Aliff, Perak..

  70. Tun,
Do you know that by giving most business opportunities in relation to the gas and petroleum sector to your beloved sons, Mirzan Mahathir and Mokhzani Mahathir, Petronas is depriving other equally capable Bumiputera businessmen such as Khairy Jamaluddin and Kamaluddin Abdullah Badawi of the opportunity to venture further into the gas and petroleum businesses in South China Sea? As a national adviser to Petronas, what do you have to say in this respect of cronyism? Do many other Malaysians, whether Bumiputera or non-Bumiputera, have to wear your shoes by practicing cronyism simply because you were the longest service Prime Minister in the history of Malaysia?

  71. Aslmkm Tun…
    Well said,it’s very true…
Some people is not realized it purposely and dont know how to be grateful..

  72. Assalam Tun

    Sekian, terima kasih

SELAMAT HARI RAYA KEPADA TUN SEKELURGA

  74. Yes NEP is aimed to satisfy all Malays since majority Malays are not complaining as they are easily satisfied with simple lives that they need not want to be well off. On the other hand minority Malays that are well off are not complaining either. NEP serve to make minority Malays well off without need them to put effort while majority still happy go lucky at kampung.

But why aim to merely satisfy people? Instead it shd aim to better and by better we don’t mean being well off without working hard. It shd build Malays into capable hard working people as hard working is a virtue. Being well off without working hard is not virtuous. Only Multi Level Marketing is saying “be rich without work hard” and that is what NEP essentially.

  75. Cool.

  76. Good morning Tun,

    547. In our national ID cards and passports, Rakyat are
Bumiputra in Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak.

    548. It was implemented by the then KDN’s portfolio hold by late DS Megat Junid and his deputy, DS Ong Ka Ting under 10th National Plan.

    549. Yes, 29. Politicians must find issues to support their bids for power. But condemning the NEP can only be done by twisting or ignoring the contributions of that policy to political stability and the economic success of Malaysia, a good decision, Tun.

    550. They may choose to forget their race of origin and unite.

    551. They may choose to use their race of origin and continue to disunite and become weaker and smaller.

    552. By the end, cash cow projects will be landed in hands of GLCs, Land Developers, Multi-National and Multi-International Corporations which only hire those who are capable in running their businesses.

    553. As for Anwar Ibrahim, let his lawyers and The Common Court deal with him.

    554. Our 5th Premier, Pak Lah, had made a mistake in declaring Zero Corruption.

    555. Today, Pak Lah should know by now that Zero Corruption is equivalent to have Zero Sneezing in life which is tak boleh direliasasikan punya di mana2 kita berada.

    556. Debate with national and international issues and policies must comply to inter-states’ diplomacy will win the heart of Bumiputra Malaysians.

    557. Twisting words and numbers will only win votes from the not so educated older grass roots who do not know what is going on globally and nationally.

    558. Younger educated generation do not vote because they are disgusted and fed up with race and religion issues brought up all the politicians.

    559. If politicians keep on talking draining politics that do not comply to 10th national plan and policies coped with global warming and financial shifts, they will become smaller and smaller, weaker and weaker.

    560. They have a choice to march forward, and their mind is to get votes from Bumiputra, or they prefer to have Anwar Ibrahim in their brains first, emotionally.

    561. PM Najib is luckier than Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tunku Abdul Razak, Tun Mahathir and Tun Pak Lah because he has inherited an economy coped with rising inflation with pepaduan yang lebih kukuh dan stabil.

    562. Finally, similar to DS Najib foot step , today, Jet Li was invited by Wushu Federation to ring the bell in New York Stock Exchange Centre recently, what did our Dr Chua did as Bumiputra Malaysians neh?

    563. Seiji Maehara, 前原誠司, ex-Foreign Minister with nama-manja of China Hawk and a lawmaker, may be appointed by DPJ with the blessing of Kyoto, currently with 20 Communist MPs to become the 6th PM of Japan because he is popular in public awareness and was forced to resign due to his acceptance of illegal donation politicized by his enemies, from a Korean woman doing business in Japan.

    564. Democrat Party in Thailand may push for street demonstration because Yingluck did not include 2 red MPs who have won in GE into her Cabinet.

    565. If closed minded politicians cannot forgive and forget the past, they are the major obstacle and enemy to themselves.

    566. Disunity due to Can-or-not mentality; and continue to cope up with makan bubur strategy due to short term stagflation and deflation, politicians decide.

    567. Bumiputra are busying in adjusting their lifestyle to cope with rising inflation rate.

    568. It’s either these politicians learn or not, and if they accuse others of being jealous of them being the millionaires, they are indeed naive and will be ngaped by their own greed and will have to pay the price tomorrow.

    569. By that time, we are proudly to call ourselves as Malaysia Boleh!

    Good day, Tun.

  77. Y. A. Bhg Tun@ Tahniah Tun satu ulasan yang hebat.
    3. DEB mempunyai matlamat serampang dua mata membasmi kemiskinan tanpa mengira kaum dan menyusun semula masyarakat supaya pembahagian kekayaan Negara lebih adil.
Kalau dulu orang Melayu hanya menanam Padi, orang Cina menguasai perniagaan, manakala orang India bekerjasama diladang.
    Iklas,
    Rahim.
    penjajah

  78. Assalammua’laikum wrt… Tun yang dihormati,

Anda pernah berfikir sebegini? Kenapa ya?

Biasa kita dengar dengan kata-kata berikut:-
    Anda telah mengHINA seseorang.
    Anda telah mengHINA mahkamah.
    Anda telah mengHINA bangsa lain.
    Anda telah mengHINA …..

Tetapi, pernahkah kita mendengar dgn kata-kata berikut?

(Terjemahan Surah Az-Zumar ayat 55)

  80. Salam Tun and All,

I am a product of your era. I am a beneficiary of the NEP. My family was a traditional farmer and by design, I should be a farmer too. But I am not, thanks to your effort during your administration, I am now a professional actively involve in fraud examination and internal auditing. I started originally as an Accountant though. I enjoy what I did and I am eternally grateful to anyone who had contributed towards my life improvement direct or indirect.

I like to look at this life very objectively because as a trained Accountant, we are required to be meticulous to detail and get our fact very straight or we risk ourselves giving wrong opinion that will misled the decision making process. It is sad that after your gone, the quality of the country leadership in terms of intellectualism, modesty and honesty is not as par as you did. Previously, we hope to get better than you…

People now have ulterior motives, talking crap, misleading people, telling lies and it is all politically motivated to bid for power. Slander is our breakfast nowadays… We earned more sins just by opening our mouth rather than all the effort to rob someone..

A lot of people tends to have opinions just by make-belief and it is not substantiated with proper analysis, facts and is not based on the truth. This is just to create perception and again politically motivated to bid for power.

And this Anwar guy really think that Malaysian in general are really a stupid people and is a lesser person than he is. But honestly though, I may have bought a few when the first allegation was thrown upon him during the early stage. Of course, it is bitter to swallow back then compared to now.

But now I like to remain very objective and be very careful especially when it come to politics. NEP is surely good and has been very effective. I will give my support to the one who can deliver effectively to this country and can protect the people interest. I will against anyone who can threaten the achievement of the objective.

At this juncture Tun, to be honest with you, my orientation is more towards against Anwar leadership rather than a staunch supporter of Najib Tun Razak….

  81. salam tun and selamat berpuasa,
NEP worked for Malaysia but now it has been abused especially
    in terms of PERCEPTIONS.
We are not on world investors screen because of this.
The Prime Minister Najib do not seem tobe able to change
    this perception.
Dismantling NEP must be done but Malay interest can still be
protected by policies that generally protect the poor. Most
    Malays are poor.
Your sons are billionaires. It is impossible that all three are that
    clever businessmen.

  82. Salam Tun,
All good praises to ALLAH, we pray for your’s and your family’s continues health and be protected from evil of human and other creatures seen by naked eyes or conceal in any forms.

The details you have published of NEP is clear fact. The NEP did it things, those looser are denying it.

Let them go for survey to other Asean countries to know the admiration of Malaysia implemented the programs under NEP.

Indeed all Malaysian benefited from the NEP programs, by NEP implementations, the looser’s where the corrupted ideologies of bad politicians.

Malaysian are not stupid, specially the Bumiputra’s, we all thanks with gratitude and support such micro planning carried out by our government in house. We explore that such program be further enhance by the Government for as long possible as these is a Malaysian way of life.

All Bumiputra politician must work for the bumiputra course as this brings the cycle of harmony economically to non Malays or non bumiputra.

Get rid of the Zionism of Malaysia politician, whatever political party they are from. Any politician trying to distort the Malaysia agenda must be labelled as Zionist. We always know from the first words coming from them. They odd to be careful course they’re not playing children game anymore.

POLITICIAN DO NOT PLAY YOUR EVIL GAME. YOU ARE BEING WATCHED BY THE MASTER PLANNER AND WE ARE AWARE.

    Thank you Tun.
Only God’s Will’s will come out effectively to HIS Master Plan and not the evil’s agenda.
