CENSORING THE INTERNET

1. Not knowing the power of the Internet, I promised that we (speaking as the Prime Minister of Malaysia) would not censor it. But today I have changed my mind.

2. I have done so because the players, including those controlling the servers have been applying their own censorship of what can appear in this alternative media. I myself have suffered from such censorship.

3. When I put on my blog, an article on the Jews, without any explanation, my article was prevented from being linked to Facebook.

4. But that is not all. I first used the internationally available platform to host my blog. When hundreds of thousands visited my blog, suddenly the platform rejected hosting my blog site.

5. I changed the platform but again it was blocked. I have now changed servers and platforms three times. Still there have been attempts to block my blog. Not to mention the numerous spam and virus attacks against my blog.

6. Blocking is of course a form of censorship. The internet is not the free alternative to the state-controlled print and electronic media it is touted to be. It is subject to even more censorship than Governments could exercise. The people who hosts these platforms and servers can censor. And various other means are available to the powerful controllers of the new media for them to censor in the interest of their politics.

7. There is no freedom of the alternative media. Governments and the owners of servers and platforms and assorted others can censor the alternative media. It is actually less free than print and electronic media operating under Government licences.

8. I think it is time we stop talking of the freedom of the press. Let us admit that the press needs to be censored. It needs to be censored because freedom, any kind of freedom will always be open to abuse. The worst abuses are in the field of morality.

9. The internet has played a major role in undermining public morality. Our children are not safe from the kind of filth that the print and electronic media promote. Today any child can access pornography of the worse kind. Children are no longer safe from sexual assault. So are young girls and boys as the internet arouses the kind of base feelings that we curbed before.

10. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender or LGBT is openly touted as a part of human rights. We accept that some people are born with indeterminate sex. They were forced to hide their unusual proclivities. But now that LGBT is accepted, normal people have also taken up the practices of those who were born handicapped. And worse still certain religions have abrogated the injunctions of their religion against abnormal sex so as to be seen to be keeping up with the times.

11. Incest, child sex, sex with animals, sexual parties, sex in public and many other practices which we still feel are wrong will soon be a part of the expression of freedom and equality. All these will promoted on the internet.

12. I don’t care how sacred is freedom but I think the time has come for Governments, at least the Malaysian Government to censor the internet.

  1. Information is a double edge sword. Depends on which receiving end. If Tun truly feels terrible when your blog was blocked / censored by ISP (due to your comments about Jews), then I’m sure the same sentiment is felt when local newspapers were gagged and filtered by our government. Information and censorship are neutral, it’s how one uses it.

    Thank you for expressing your concerns over the misuse of information being circulated over the Internet. As a mother of three children I found your comments and concerns about children being exposed to pornography and homosexual and transexual viewing material on the Internet to be very pertinent and timely. It was refreshing and comforting as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses to hear you express a stand for morality in this day and age of anything goes. The view many of us have here in the west of Muslim men is contrary to the fears you expressed about children and immorality. I agree that all sexually illicit video’s or movies should be censored from the Internet but I will not hold my breath. In reality the world is pretty much run by the degenerate and corrupt and they are gaining a larger stronghold. Here in the US the currupt, immoral, degenerate Elite unfortunately control most of government, schooling, churches, mass media, entertainment and much of industry and also parts of our justice system. However we still have a measure of freedom in our ever growing police state though most are to busy being entertained by sports and endless television shows and movies to even notice we are losing our freedoms moe and more with each passing day. However freedom to watch immoral movies or you tube videos isn’t true freedom, it is perversion. The Internet is a double edged sword and as parents we need to be vigilant about protecting our children from it’s dangers. In general I do not support censorship however pornography and sexually explicit material should be prohibited.

I appreciate your openess and honesty and your allowing various diverse and even opposing opinions to be articulated on your webpage. You have allowed me a platform to express my religious views as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and for that I would like to express gratitude and to thank you ever so kindly.

    We live worlds apart across a vast ocean yet I see that we are not at all that different.

    Your observation about downward spiral trend in our country is a real issue. Without proper channel to make it known to the public is not going to do any thing good. Take for example the issue that came up recently about the reduction of Medical seats in the public universities.

    Let’s take a look at how thing have progressed over the years and how we manage a problem. These guys making policies just don’t know what they are doing.

    1. Many years ago, there were issues that we lack of doctors and doctors are being stretched over long working hours.

    2. Someone on the top solved it by starting to produce doctors like factories by letting private institution mushrooming.

    3. Obviously, these people are trying to solve problem looking at the numbers instead of the profession itself which involves life and death of the patient!

    4. By doing this, now we have reached a point where we have too many doctors coming into housemanship training.

    5. Too many Medical houseman doctors without enough facilities for them to practice means that we are creating a substandard doctors who doesn’t have adequate hands-on training!

    6. Now, this is a problem. We need to reduce the number of doctors that we are producing and let’s reduce the number in the public universities to stop this.

    7. Should we not review the existing private medical schools and cut the intake on the private medical schools rather than public ones? Public universities are catered the more affordable options for our fellow Malaysians and they are very well established and this is where we should be focusing!

    8. Should we not review why there are so many students with such good results? Is it because we have dropped our standard too low that we are unable to identify the really top of the cream students?

    9. I totally understand that there are other important aspect of being a good doctor but the best measurable thing is to get the best academic result person who are interested into the profession. Other aspect such as being caring, responsible and diligent can be observed when someone is applying to further their studies into their specialized field.

    { My interpretation: If you don’t believe everything in Internet as truth, it would not be as bad. If one says Life can be beautiful if one says “no religion too”. My belief is that their time to believe in a religion isn’t there yet. }

    { My interpretation: It is not always about Winning. Losing may have blessings behind it. I like this closing because losing now doesn’t mean losing forever and losing can also mean something positive. On the comment about “Why not other values?” What defines other values? Do you agree that it can be used to censor some information that shed bad light on the current government. If you think that Malaysia is equal to the governing political party and the current governing political party and it is perfectly fine that the system can be used as a tool to suppress bad light to do damage control. This is totally wrong. You can only improve when you learn from mistake though the hard way. What we need is to have a system that will work regardless of which political party in charge. }

    Before I share my thoughts, I would like to recommend Tun to read balance’s comments. Particularly this one! Couldn’t have written any better with great meaning/substance in it..

    Let me start with my thoughts and I may be repeating some of the comments that others have done.

    1. The censorship by the Internet Service owner (be it the server hosting or other widely used social networking) has always existed and will always be there. Are there any alternative to it? For social networking services, there are recent news coming up that there are plans to look at possibilities of closing down Facebook in Malaysia. Question is that what is the alternative for the existing Malaysian Facebook users going to use to connect to the rest of the world or we prefer just to shut the door? Let’s look at what the Chinese Government has done, they have shut Facebook down but there is an alternative “weibo” for the Chinese Community to continue to connect to the rest of the community in the world. Are we able to provide similar attractive service to the Malaysian community? We shutdown one today; the pack will just move to another platform. Are we going to shutdown each and everyone of them? Are we going to shutdown youtube completely as well like they do in China as well?

    2. Any server that is put out in the Internet is prone to attack. I believe that Tun’s website is not alone in this regards. It happens to any online hosted websites; be it the government websites, pro-government websites, pro-opposition websites, etc. And, normally these attacks doesn’t comes by chance, it is targeted for a reason. Question is how can the effect be minimized? I believe that the answer to that is to have proper management and a group of competent IT personnel managing the situation.

    Tun mentioned that it’s time to stop talking about freedom of press even in the Internet and start censoring information. This is a double-edge sword, isn’t it? Critical comments can be easily shutdown by the current government and do you still think that the government will care to do their job properly?

    Whenever one person is given this absolute power, it is always prone to abuse. These filters/censorship are already available and have already been used before and we have seen these during the Election Time where certain youtube “pro opposition” videos are not accessible from Malaysia but is available anywhere else in the world. These are pretty sophisticated filtering and we are already seeing these censorship being abused for political/personal mileage.

    I totally support implementing filters for porn or other unhealthy social activities if this is the reason to do information censorship to protect our next generation from the corrupted information. It should be implemented as a free service available by any local Malaysia Internet Service Provider (ISP) on request basis. If this noble policy is used to mask other “covered” reasons, it should be thought twice.

    The one million dollar question is how do we implement censorship for the right reason without being abused.

    Saya setuju dengan apa yang diperkatakan oleh rakan blogger Orang Lama @ https://thechedet.com/?p=1431#comment-119011 bahawa penapisan internet sangat diperlukan.

    Selain penapisan, saya fikir adalah perlu diwujudkan satu penyaluran yang sihat, kalau boleh disebut sebagai satu re-distribution channel untuk redirect/melencongkan atau membawa carian dan trafik ke satu tapak yang lebih bersih dan produktif. Kalau dah tapis, tapi tak tahu ke mana hendak dibawa atau disalurkan bahan tapisan (yakni individu dan trafik) maka itu juga akan mencipta masalah baru. Lamanweb yang dibekukan dengan poster amaran hanyalah satu tindakan SKMM yang bernada egocentric dan authoritarian tanpa penambahan nilai.

    Sebab utama bagaimana www ( world wide web ) dan internet membangun dengan pesat adalah sebahgiannya atas usaha gigih oleh programmer industri porno yang mencari jalan untuk melepasi sekatan kerajaan dan pihak berkuasa dalam penjualan hiburan lucah. Kejayaan mereka membisneskan internet telah secara tidak langsung mencipta satu lubuk kewangan yang dalam lagi gelap di mana wang bertukar tangan dalam sekelip mata dengan satu klik sahaja.

    Selain industri porno, portal berita seperti Malaysiakini, FMT, MalaysiaInsider dan banyak lagi website berbentuk hasutan adalah yang paling taksub dengan kebebasan tanpa sekatan di internet. Malahan sekarang ini kita lihat bagaimana selain porno, berita berbentuk hasutan juga ada nilai komersil yang tinggi dan boleh dijadikan bisnes lumayan. Lihat saja carta harga langganan Malaysiakini, itu belum termasuk perolehan dari paparan iklan dan tajaan.

    Jadi, kerajaan perlu mencari jalan baru, idea baru dan authentic supaya lamanweb dan portal berita yang ‘nakal’ itu boleh di-salurkan atau redirect kepada satu lamanweb yang positif, produktif, inovatif, infomatif dan tidak merosakkan moral dan mental. Hasutan porno dan politik adalah pencetus utama masalah jenayah dan perkauman yang semakin meningkat dan tiada petanda ianya akan reda.

    Cabaran bagi kerajaan ke arah censorship yang wajar ialah untuk mencipta content atau isi ( dan pengisian ) yang inteligen, berguna, bermanfaat, berwawasan, bermoral, sederhana, neutral dan bebas dari pendakwahan agama atau proselytism. Dengan cara ini, saya fikir, penerimaan ramai terhadap internet yang bermoral dan bertapis dapat diwujudkan tanpa banyak alasan dan bantahan.

    Pada pendapat saya penapisan internet memang perlu. Anak2 muda kita mudah terpengaruh dengan apa yang terdapat dalam media elektronik. Penapisan internet memang perlu diadakan. Kalau tak ada had dunia ini tiadalah undang2.

    Portal Malaysianinsider pun ada penapisan tersendiri. Mana2 komen yang tak menyebelahi kaum bukan bumi dan Pakatan Rakyat biasanya ditapis keluar komen. Laman chedet saja yang lebih terbuka. Orang kritik bila kritik sesiapa pun termasuk Tun Mahathir. Berita kuar negara pun ditapis. Contoh terbaik berita Gaza di banyak memihak kepada Israel. Amerika yang dikatakan jaguh hak2 kebebasan pun tak amalkan kebebasan. nask serupa sebuah parti di Malaysia. Cakap lebih habuk pun tarak.

    1. PAS dipermainkan PKR dan DAP dulu,kini dan selamanya

    PAS dulu dikatakan dimain2kan UMNO sehingga merajuk keluar Barisan Nasional pada tahun 1977. Padahal masalah itu berpunca sesama orang PAS sendiri. Sekarang PAS dipermain2kan pula PKR dan DAP. Setiausaha DAP pernaj cabar PAS keluar Pakatan Rakyat. Bila sekarang isu Menteri Besar , PKR dan DAP masih buli PAS dengan menetapkan apa PAS perlu buat. Orang Lama pun sama suka cakap apa PAS perlu buat.

    Sungguh hairan dan sungguh ajaib beberapa pemimpin PAS lebih taat kepada pemimpin PKR.Buat apa la depa menyiksa diri jadi ahli PAS kalau hati lebih kepada PKR. Pelik sungguh pelik.

    Wahai lebai PAS hang pa duk diam2 pikiaq betui2. PKR dan DAP hanya perguna hang pa saja. Bila selesai kemelut Menteri Besar , depa akan buat perangai lama semula. percayalah.

Apa punya cerita ni. Hang pa ni tak ada pendirian yang kukuh. Nak jadi pemimpin jadilah pemimpin yang betul2.

    Cakaplah perkara benar wahai Lebai2 PAS. Hangpa tu kata pejuang Islam. Cakaplah perkara benar.Dulu kan Tokguru hangpa kata tiada sebab nak tukar Khalid. Maka orang biasa macam saya ni faham tiada sebab pula exco PAS perlu berhenti kerana Khalid itu dipihak yang benar. Sejak bila hangpa belajaq cakap berbelit2 ni? Cakaplah benar,luruskan diri kerana Allah. Masalah sebenarnya orang Selangor dah faham sejak bermula dari Langkah Kajang , pemimpin PKR kerja duk cakap berbelit2. Kawan saya orang PAS fanatik pun dah mula insaf bahwa PKR dan DAP bukanlah sahabat baik untuk PAS padahal dia pun benci UMNO. Insya Allah mudah2an dia dan lain2 orang PAS terbuka hati utnuk berkasih sayang dengan orang UMNO.

    2. Empat Sekolah Persendirian Cina dapt RM2juta setiap tahun.

    Nak tanya sikit ? betulkah dakwaan bekas exco Datuk Teng Chang Khim dalam portal berita bahawa bermula dari tahun 2009, empat sekolah Cina persendirian di Selangor mendapat peruntukan automatik dari kerajaan negeri sebanyak RM2 juta setiap tahun. Tu diaaaaaaa. banyak tu. Jika benar berita ini bermaksud setiap sekolah dapat 500ribu setahun . Selangor ni dah jadi Penang ke? Inilah masalahnya bila ada DAP dalam exco kerajaan. yamng ini yang jadi pantang orang Melayu. Kalau macam ini baik bagi UMNO lah pegang Selangor. Dengar cerita tapak2 ibadat di Selangor pun ada isu sekarang ni. Entah apa lagi masalah yang disorokkan oleh exco2 Melayu dalam Pakatan rakyat ni. jangan sampai harap pagar pagar makan padi.

    1. Censoring internet is not difficult.

    2. Internet works via ip based. We could even do selective censoring – Word “sex” can be filtered from public but the university could be allowed to search that word so that academic research could be done. Even the administrator could censor the word “sex” without censoring the word “sussex”.

    3. Political censoring ? if facebook do not want to publish article, then censor facebook and produce the alternative. Surely, their revenue would go down. That would teach them a lesson.

    I totally agree with you on this matter. Kids and young people are in general unable to filter on their own the contents available in the Internet. Quite a number are easily influenced by bad acts/examples shown/displayed by immoral people.

    Tun’s blog is/was hacked and blocked because Tun is telling the truth about some events that most people are afraid to discuss openly.

    P/S: Today I was approached by 2 policemen while I was walking out of a train station at a small town in France. They were talking to me in French, but basically I knew that they thought I might be a ‘pendatang haram’. So, I immediately showed them my passport. They looked at it and let me go. I am not sure if it has got something to do with me wearing a ‘tudung’ -> ‘Muslim’.

    Agree 100% with you. The Sultan of Selangor realise it too. We should not go overboard to be spiritually strong or weak. Let us be moderate and tolerance to each other and give peace a chance. Let us respect each other more as Malaysians. I would like to apologise if i wronged or hurt anyone while shiok writing my ideas.

    the human tragedies in Gaza and Iraq is a wake-up call for us in Malaysia to not continue with racism and religious provocations as a means to gain instant support via hate politics.

    The ongoing spite between the Catholics and Muslims authorities in this country must stop before it gets out of hand.

    Both the Islamic dakwah and the Christian evangelist are guilty of proselytism in more ways than they are willing to admit. This religious one-upmanship must stop immediately or be stopped with full force of the law to avoid an ‘accidental’ ISIL uprise in our country.

    Don’t worry HBT456. Lim Guan Eng and Malaysiakini are wrong if they are to charge the patrolman . It was not his damn responsibilities to prevent the group from being nude as long as the Forest Reserve is not damaged by the group activities. He is just the ranger who took care of the reserve and not the Buddha or the Islam religion man. Don’t distort the issue to the patrolman.

    What a good research and write-up!! If the Jews are super race then Malaysians are Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Hulk added together. Ha ha Those that claim they are super this and super that are the real super bodoh. Jews are just human with very very very big evil ego. They think they can control and conquer the world, let them wait lah. For me i surely will resist and give them as many trouble pills as i can. If we make fun and criticize the Jews then we must make sure we dont follow them by claiming to be super too.

In my line of work I need to know people (customers) intention and thinking (familiarise) before I can provide my services to them so i talk and listen a lot to/from people. Most of my customers end-up as friends and I have plenty. Due to the quantity of socializing I see, touch and recognise the the good, the bad and the ugly human factors and i see more opinionated (ego) human factors in this blog and i want to learn why. In my daily work I see more greed and selfishness. Learning and more learning just to know. Haha

    This form of luscious Malaysian living is so profitable that complete families of 3 generations are in play all at the BN’s expense. No need to study hard. No need to toil. No need to do anything. No need to say nice things about the BN. And you have a damn good and well paid job of a LIFETIME. The best weapon to use to further one’s Malaysian political ambitions and money is the free use of the Internet to chop down the BN icons. When a person create or start a blog, then he or she should have basic understanding of freedom or free. In this subject Tun said that his blog been blocked many times and if Tun understand Internet and Freedom of choice then he should not feel bad about been blocked. Freedom of press and freedom of choice are very similar, read what you want to read, write what you have in mind and understand what you want to understand. Owners of blogs can block or unblock anyone or anything they like or dislike. Anyone can express their opinions and those that read can accept or reject these opinions. No bad feelings or harm if taken as an exchange. If one feel that they are bigger than others and their opinion must be taken seriously or their blogs or writings must not be block then that person suffer more. In the Internet if someone block you, you can go around them or hack them or just go to another site that willing to host you. This is the beauty of Internet or Freedom or Choice.
    When I say I want to learn and know then it means I have not formulated or cemented or confirmed an opinion yet or dont have a belief system yet or can never have one.

    With or without much money, I like to travel and experience the life of people near or far. The one thing I always see and feel everywhere is the “belief system”. It can be cultural or religious or political but those systems are very powerful influence to each type of people. If one can understand that all these system are there to control and mold the mind of people then we can become less political.
    To be free and have freedom one must know what is human fabrication and what is nature. Reading any holy books or motivation books will not make a person right or knowledgeable or true as each book will tell a different story to different people or interpreted differently by different person. That why we see war and fighting. Books are human fabrication and it will stay that way. One of the worst or wonderful human fabrications are the internet news or rumour mongering blogs or scam or advertisement. If one can separate the truth and non-truth or just read then KIV it than it is ok but if one cannot than self destruction will happen.

  54. After knowing the truth, some leaders can do anything just to win without thinking the hardship of the people, even some of them can declare wars in middle east. As oic member, you cant stop this brutality of wars in the middle east, but you create so much disharmony in malaysian lives. The most horrendous leaders in the world are those leaders who have no guilt conscious in heart, or god. They are not god fearing, and they can do anything just to win wars by finishing those rivals in a brutal way. I never been to middle east, but I know the average muslim no longer want to be the country men there, they migrate to western world, the land of god. Nevertheless, when come to next ge, malaysians will vote for the next pm, or rulling party. But I believe, in the land of god, these immigrants will be shape as malaysian way of life. Their children will be our children, and thd federal constitution is here to stay for many years to come.

    Until today scientists are still arguing about science because everyday there are new discoveries and everyday is new day or yesterday is not today or today is not the same as yesterday. Ha ha ha

    First things first, what field are you in that I am in too? I think you have missed the point by suggesting I can’t penetrate the domestic or western market.

    The domestic and western markets from which I operate are at a level which does not include writing in blogs unless it is part of a wider media campaign.

    I enjoy this space in my own time especially the Che Det blog because I do have an interest in the politics of Malaysia having spent a part of my youth there.

    Secondly as director of a media company and a former producer and trainer of one of the largest and the most diverse multi ethnic multi media organizations in Australia I do have some input into any media space I chose to apply my skills to. And not always do I need to be invited into a market to do so. I am able to apply the same science and technology available in a discrete and stealthy way as most of the western media companies do.

    The media in most western and east European countries are controlled by their governments. The theory is that they are “free to express themselves”. In practice they are not. If they were then Ronald Reagan’s and Margaret Thatchers invitation only press conferences which even Helen Thomas White House veteran was barred from by Reagan would not still exist as a practice.

    Neither would the anti Israeli voices in the west be denied print and electronic media space even in Saudi controlled media (News Corp is owned by Rupert Murdoch and Prince Talal of the Saudi Royal Family in a complex shareholding structure of the company).

    Self censorship is also evident in the western media. Reuters placed this story on their wire but very few of the western media put it to print.

A Supreme Court judge in Australia has placed a suppression order on the information.

    The Mossad exterminated (for want of a better word) a young Australian Jew who went to serve in Israel. Prisoner X as he became known fudged a Mossad operation and was kidnapped and put in solitary confinement in an Israeli prison.

    His condition in that prison was extreme. They say he committed suicide even though it was a 24 hour round the clock watch cell. They would watch him go to the toilet via high definition cctv. But when he “hanged himself” the Mossad was not watching.

    Some sectors of the local Jewish community wanted answers. Israel put a similar condition on anyone talking to the media about it. Australia followed suit. There was a mini documentary by the ABC on this story and it got shelved. The point I make is that censorship exists everywhere. But the west do not want us their minions to exercise it unless it is in their favour.

    The Tuns posting on censorship demands a multi dimensional response which I arrived at in part (it would be too long otherwise to dissect what he suggests and to respond to each element of it).

    The very point I have made you appear not to understand. We can penetrate the western media except for the mindset of our leaders. They are still trapped in that era whereby they believe they are unable to because western “technology” is better or more overwhelming than ours as it may be the case about our capabilities. And you demonstrate that point about the mindset vividly. I don’t think the Tun took that approach.

    Another point I made was about accessing the western space and media in order that we are able to then shape what they say t suit our own perspectives rather than to cut and paste what their mainstream news agencies like Reuters, News Limited and others feed us with. These items are then copyrighted so that it (information) becomes their property and we have no rights to deal with it.

    My point is that we can. But for that we need the talent, we need proper and secular (not in the religious sense) pool of talent to deal with such situations. By putting forth what we can ourselves produce we will eventually in an indirect way censor the so called “alternative” and external media.

    With or without Internet, there will always be the good, the bad and the ugly. Censoring or no censoring there always be people with different opinions and intentions. There is no such thing as good system or bad system as all systems will always just be systems, it is human intention that fabricate or mold those systems into whatever it can become. If a person with your abilities cannot see and understand that all man-made things on earth will always stay non-reality and can be taken, seen and feel in whatever ways a person want to see and understand then it is proof that wisdom is not knowledge or IQ. Just use the internet the way anyone want to use it and let others decide what and how they use it. If there are 2 billion people on earth then there are 2 billion opinion and 2 billion people that say their thoughts are right or the best of the best. If want to argue and debate then there will be no time to sleep, eat and drink.
    The power of NOW, the understanding of “all things must change” and all things are “just human’s mind fabrications” are small understanding to live in peace. Your current thoughts are the proof that people change and thoughts change. If a person thinks that whatever his/her knowings are truth or facts and hold-on tightly to it then that person must be suffering terribly and must truly examine himself or herself internally. Simple things to watch are those so called professional medical experts also change their so called professional views or one group of experts say eating eggs are bad for health and other group will say eggs are good. So what s right or wrong?

    1. It is important for Malaysia to have a filter. Internet censorship should be done in Malaysia carefully and in a ‘transparent’ way. The agency responsible should openly highlight what they censor and what they not.

    2. The influx of unfiltered hedonistic and porn information are not good for Malaysians.

    3. Such filter has already been implemented in the UK. Their internet service providers give options to the customers to choose if they want to have a porn filter or not. For us, we can just implement it for all, unless they choose not to. For Malaysians, it surely will contest their morality if they wish to choose not to install the porn filter.

    4. I am opposing any other type of filters. Any other type of filters will lead to a great concern on power abuse. Let Malaysians learn how to use their freedom of expression, let the police do their jobs on those who have/will crossed the line. Let us not be the North Korea nor the US.

    Lim Kit Siang, the Malaysian Bar, the Nutgraph, Malaysia Kini, the Malaysian Insider are all guilty of censorship. So too with the Malay Mail and the Star. They engage in overt and blatant censorship of the views of others that are divergent to that of their own and their political views.

    In doing what they do they justify and practice censorship. In so doing they place those of us who believe in freedom of expression providing it is reasonable, the right to freely express our views.

  69. Firstly there is no absolute freedom of expression which supports the western liberal myth of “freedom of speech, expression and freedom of the press”. It does not exist in the constitution. It does not exist in reality. T

    here are many subtle and not so subtle ways of censoring or limiting access to information, freedom of expression or distributing the same. The first and most common of these you have already alluded to here.

    A case in point. Not three years ago, the Palestinians also decided to get on the bandwagon to foster regime change in the middle east. They too decided like many others it was time for change and tried to usher in a Palestinian spring within the boundaries of the occupied territories and the state of Israel.

    The Palestinians garnered over 350,000 supporters within a matter of 12 hours and the numbers began to grow. Marc Zuckerberg himself ordered the social media organization of which he is head to bring down the Palestinian network and close down their accounts. The rest as they say is history. To suggest this is a conspiracy theory is to insult the intelligence of all of us who know that conspiracies in this regard do exist.

    My own personal background as a technical and executive producer in the media for 4 decades has allowed me to go where others can’t. There is an outrageously low quality copy cat coterie of so called ‘alternative media’ in Malaysia and Thailand financed and directed by the Dutch, French, Germans, English and Americans (via Australian universities and media organizations as the ABC). They use local stooges who believe they are better than the rest because they are “accepted” by these forces. A bit like Rose Chan was to the British in her day.

    The tragedy of our post colonial existence is that we have paid lip service to development focusing instead on factories and professionals without the voice and means to take to our villages the information we should have in order to reinforce our own values whilst equipping our people to cope with the modern world without losing their identity.

    As Lee Kuan Yew rightly said “culture is ballast for our people in a changing world”. A frightening number of urban Malays appear so easily swayed these days towards the cheap imported plastic culture of absolute freedoms whereby their most base senses and their latent demons are teased out of them via the internet. This is because they have been swamped by this imported culture where restrictions to the kind of material available do not exist. Where restrictions exist there is technology to overcome them.

    What is needed is a strong corps of intelligent and experienced media people with a focus and commitment to nation building through reinforcing core cultural values. The talent exists out there but the willingness to dip ones hand into ones pocket to take that risk isn’t. For this to occur there has to be cogent and coherent policy which does not exist at government levels.

    Instead we have the likes of the Vincent Tan financed trash that is peddled out there as fearless reporting and journalism. It beggars belief that in this day and age a nation that once had English as its first language can produce and tolerate if not wholly embrace such low quality nonsense of sensationalism at its lowest as that produced by some of what is peddled as not just the alternative media but also its mainstream.

    The technology exists in the east, India for instance where the writer recently secured the services of hackers in an experiment to exploit glitches in various systems in order to obtain information in much the same way Rupert Murdoch gets his information for his tabloids. It was testing the boundaries but certainly not novel anymore. One upmanship and chutzpah is what’s required to get ahead and keep abreast of the pack.

    There is more. What is needed is the courage, the foresight and the enterprise amongst those who are likeminded and see the necessity to advance your point in this regard. Someone has to grab the initiative. Governments, especially serving government’s are not motivated enough to initiate any such move. Only those with vision and hungry enough can if they only will.

    As the late Mrs. Gandhi once posited at the north south dialogue, the greatest sanctions against us is the denial of the media of nations in the southern hemisphere (3rd world) to access information available freely to western media sources. She was not being subtle about it.

    Asian journalists find it hard to get a ticket or invite to major political media events. Ronald Reagan pioneered the selective invitation of inviting only those who agreed with him leaving out others however credible their reporting histories were. The rest of the world followed. It need not be a barrier anymore.

    We need a paradigm shift in reporting and reporting styles and in media and information design generally that begins with choking the so called “alternative mediums” and vehicles that carry information. We should once more look east to Chinese servers and those of the Russian federation. Seeking alternatives and safe harbours is what we do not do.

    But we first need to meet the challenge of producing quality men and women of the media. What Malaysia has at present is mediocrity in abundance in this sector.

    Putting a team together is never the problem. Finding the backers is. Can we both rise to that challenge Tun?
