LANGKAWI O' LANGKAWI

1. I used to sail in the Mediterranean sea and visited the islands there. They were all very bare. There were a few trees growing in between bare rocks.

2. Coming back I appreciated our green islands more. And the greenest of them all (to me at least) is Langkawi.

3. But I am afraid it is getting less and less green now.

4. We like to blame the developers for cutting down the tree. And I think they should be blamed. But in Langkawi we see people, mostly locals I think, who quietly burn down the undergrowth and sometimes the trees as well, so they can plant bananas and other fruit trees. They do this on the hillsides normally.

5. As a result when it rains, muddy water which used to be trapped and the flow slowed by the bushes now come down in torrents.

6. If the hillsides continue to be cleared, there will be landslides soon.

7. A Langkawi that is not green won’t be much of an attraction, I think.

8. My blog seems to have some effect. The straightening and widening of the north south highway, as well as the cutting of trees have now stopped. All praise be to Allah. Thank you JKR.

9. I had lunch on the rocks at Tanjung Sanctuary. This is an old hotel but the new owner has completely refurbished. No trees were cutand you pass through a real forest to reach the chalets and the restaurant.

10. I was there when the hotel was started almost 20 years ago. This was my second visit and the ambience is fantastic. Very restful.

11. O Langkawi – may it always be green. In my years as Prime Minister nothing gave me so much pleasure as developing Langkawi. It still gives me the same pleasure.

  1. Apa khabar Tun,
Tun, JIKA BENAR-BENAR INGIN BANTU NEGARA PALESTIN; hanya SATU CARA TERBAIK IALAH LAKUKAN DENGAN TANGAN KITA SENDIRI MELALUI PENGUATKUASAAN dan PENGAWASAN MENGGUNAKAN KEKUATAN KETENTERAAN ISLAM SENDIRI.
    2) LANGKAWI TEMPAT PERSIDANGAN
    4) KUASA NUKLEAR vs JONGKONG EMAS

  4. Yes, you are right, Langkawi is fast losing its green aura. It is good to know that you revisited Tg Sanctuary, which is being responsibly kept green with development being done without destroying the original sentinels of the once lushly forested environs.
I’m, perhaps, among those who help promote the island ‘pro bono’, after failing to get support from the likes of LADA or even the state tourism people – and my basic and generic site is getting good hits and mostly used as a travel reference point for Langkawi.
Back to Tg Sanctuary, perhaps the next time you pass the area try to turn and look up the hill next to the entrance, and you will find the jungle cleared for farming, etc. No wonder, the monkeys have become beggars along the road that also leads to Perdana Quay/Telaga Harbour.
The same is happening on the other parts of the island.
Unless LADA and the other bodies responsible for the welfare of the island get their acts together, we will find soon find Langkawi only holding on to empty taglines and slogans…going overboard with the newly-acquired Geopark label but raping and ravaging its backyard without shame.

  5. Assalamualaikum Tun….
I am agreed with u regarding what u had sad about green our Malaysia. May God bless u INSYAALLAH from Ex SAHC

  6. dear Tun,
Someday when you are no longer around,Langkawi will slowly lose it’s appeal.Langkawi is all about your passion and love -and the respect the people in power is still giving to you while you are still amongst us.Malaysia too will go the same way of Langkawi. After watching the video “I help you,you help me”(to ekomputer, tks for the expose, may God bless you)I realize just how stinking UMNO has become. Is Najib for real here?If he is capable of offering a bribe in broad daylight like that in full view of the world-imagine what he is capable of behind closed doors in his negotiation for power.Money seem to be the only way these guys know on how to win votes-maybe they have nothing else to offer. So believe me there is no way they can rid themselves of money politics. When a fish stinks it starts from the head, hence why the whole of UMNO now stinks. The PRU 13 will definitely be UMNO’s farewell elections. The other side may not be any better but at least they are offering us hope -and considering frustrating state of affairs esp regards accountability in GLCs etc-hope is all we need.

  7. Hi,
Thank you for this blog info. I am a matsali living in Langkawi. Its funny that the same problems with people are so similar around the world. When I first came to Langkawi, I saw a lot of beauty and simple living. Perfect. After getting to know my way around, whats under the surface is sad. Take Kuala Teriang for example.
I lived there briefly when I first came here and still go through often. Trash litters the street, their rubbish receptacle is non -existant at this time…people burning plastics and old furniture. They throw their rubbish in the sea. I’ve been told by locals that the ‘government’ picks it up ever so often. Implying that its not their business how their streets and environments look. Cars and scooter race through neighborhoods there where children are playing. And no one seems to care. Every day tourists go through the area thinking looking for 7 Wells… (because local map so bad and no signs). They all get to see this village up close and personal. Especially the big pile of stinky trash by the ‘community’ center. Does anyone care? I don’t know. The people of the village seem no to, or else they have no power to do anything. I was recently told about post Tsunami clean up by volunteers and seeing villagers just sitting around while volunteers from outside the area did the work. Actually pointing at stuff for the volunteers to pick up! And then Mangrove planting..every year someone comes to plant Mangroves to protect the village and no villagers even take an interest.
If locals don’t care about their own environment…do you think they care about the big picture? Someone needs to push environmental education to all on all levels of intellectual comprehension. And there isn’t much time before its too late to turn back. And again, thank you for your inspirational writings. Its nice to see thinking outside the box for a change.

  8. Assalamualaikum Ayahnda Tun & Bonda,
    please allow me,
my family & i went to langkawi last year, the first time for me though i’m a kedahan but have been living in the east coast nearly 2/3 of my life. my spouse went there at teenage & my children went with their grandparents( my parents). at first it was a very wonderful thought to go holidaying on the island. at the ferry terminal in kuala kedah, we were cornered (conned??)by a few agents who offered us some so-called discounted rates for some activities on the island, from the ferry tickets, island hopping, visiting the legendary tasik dayang bunting & so on. we were also suggested to get this car-rental operator who could give low rental. excitedly we crossed over & stayed at a 4star hotel. we had dinner at one of the restaurants on pantai chenang but it cost me a fortune – a lobster alone was rm120! the next day, a stall nearby offered us a lobster at only rm40!!! did we pay rm120 for the lobster or the restaurant ambience or what??
yes. we went island hopping, swimming & boating in the maiden’s lake, feasting on seafood at the seaside stalls & strolling the beaches. we visited mahsuri’s tomb & replica of her village, the seafront & part of kuah. we also went up the hill to have a view of langkawi airport & took the chance to ride the cable car to mat cincang. fantastic! tq Ayahnda Tun for such a marvellous idea!!! the scene was awesome & we had a lovely time up there…
while roaming the island, we realized that the condition was not all very picturesque. there were patches of burning plots & land clearings which we could see from afar on the hillsides & also the development of the town area which was so rampant with the uneven tarmack, coarse surfaces of the road & unkempt surroundings here & there. hopefully these will be temporary & by the time we go there again, all the development projects will be completed, insyaAllah.
we also realized that we had been charged double/triple by the agent at kuala kedah terminal. we surveyed the charges on the island & they were far cheaper. the next time, we’ll go straight & bargain on our own. it was also my mistake when i didnt browse the net to get the best offers before going there (forgot?). but the thing is that, the agents should be more honest with the local visitors because money does not grow on trees for people like me. i got this extra money from marking papers & doing part time lecturing during semester breaks…so please have mercy on us, the local tourists.
    Kutubkhanah Zaman,
how very cynical your theory on paklah & co’s job on ‘cleanliness’!!!hehehehe….
    Dr Naz,
macam mana nak mintak DSNajib lantik Tun jadi Duta Besar Langkawi? sudah tentu tak boleh kerana Langkawi Kedah punya & kedah Pas yg memerintah? kalau tanya pakzan, tentu dia kata ‘tak tau! tak tau! tak mau! tak mau!’
May Allah SWT bless you both Ayahnda Tun & Bonda.
    Wassalam.
    just my brain wave…

  9. it’s seem stupid with out tree
    Salam Tun,
p/s- kiranya jangan bila pelancong disana kekurangan oksigen cukuplah…please do somethinglah or call Persatuan Pencinta Alam Malaysia.

  10. SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG
    AYAHANDA RAKYAT TUN
    IZINKAN,
    11. O Langkawi – may it always be green. In my years as Prime Minister nothing gave me so much pleasure as developing Langkawi. It still gives me the same pleasure.
WE USED TO FREQUENT LANGKAWI ISLAND DURING YOUR TENURE AS PM BUT SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW WE LOST THE SCENT TO THE ISLAND SOON AFTER AYAHANDA TUN STEPPED DOWN..WE RECALLED OUR MOST MEMORABLE VISIT WAS WHEN PAVOROTTI WAS THERE AND WE HAD TO GIVE UP OUR SUITE PREVILEDGE TO COMFORT A DEPUTY PM WHO MADE A LATE DECISION TO ATTEND THE SHOW.. THAT’S QUITE SOMETIME AGO, WE BELIEVED..
PERHAPS, IT’S LONG OVERDUE FOR ANOTHER STAY AT THE BERJAYA BURAU BAY RESORT TO WATCH THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSET FROM THE COFFEE TERRACES..AND WE CUD STILL RECALLED A GERMAN GUEST EXCLAMATION WHILE WATCHING IN AWE THE SUNSET SCENERY FROM THE TERRACES… BREATHTAKING!
WE WONDERED WHETHER WE CAN STILL GET THAT ‘SAME OLD FEELING’ OF LOVE IN THE AIR.. LANGKAWI, OF COURSE!
    ALFATIHAH, AMIN.

  12. Dear respected Tun,
I am a born Kedahan living in Langkawi, i wish to stray off topic a little bit. Maybe you should look into a bit about the ferry operator there. There is some new ferry are being used and that is good. You have now flat TV screen although you cannot hear what is being said on the screen because sound is not spread around which could be good as some people want to sleep on the ferry. I wish they have an earphone where if you chose to follow whats on TV you could just wear them and listen. But enough about that, it’s probably to ‘canggih’ for us to demand. Furthermore it’s a boat not a plane. We don’t have it and thats the end of it.
What i want to touch is what we already have on the boat. A gas pedal! This ferry operator are sailing very slowly to save fuel. They are not thrusting ahead at full speed although the weather are clear and the seas are calm. These greedy people want to save money on gas to make more profit so they sail at slow speed although i’m informed some of the new ferry actually have turbo engines.
Secondly, the time schedule. I wish we be more like German. If the time says 4.30 then the ferry must move at 4.30 sharp no matter what but instead the ferry only start moving 10 to 15 minutes after that. This could be because the ferry operator want to sell some last minutes tickets. It could also be because our people have last minute mentality and not the punctual type. If i buy ticket at 4.30 and arrive at dock 4.31 and the ferry are gone I will blame myself but not all people are like me. This require a paradigm shift. I don’t expect this change soon but about the speed, please step on the gas pedal. Why buy a Ferrari but drive like Proton? Everytime i want to go back i hope i get a good ferry. Some ferry are comfortable and have big seat space some are not so much. Some are fast but most are slow, intentionally slow is what pisses me off.

  13. Yang Amat DiKasihi Tun Dr. Mahathir,
Sejak lahir sehinggalah umur saya 53 tahun belum pernah saya menjejakkan kaki ke Pulau Langkawi. Susah dipercayai tetapi itulah hakikatnya.
“Developers must be accountable!” Itulah harapan kami.

  14. Dear Tun,
If I were the Prime Minister I would convert Langkawi as an international centre for higher learning to cater for students in the Far East. The govt. should invite a well known foreign university to set up branch campus in Langkawi. Langkawi could be the Oxford or Cambridge of the East having conducive place for study with good infrastructure for outdoor recreation and sports facilities for students. You just imagine if the universty could enroll 10000 student population, the amount of spin off economic activities generated by these students would be enormous indeed. Just take RM1000 per student spending for lodging, food, clothig etc. it would generate 10 million ringgit of sales turnover for Langkawi island each month. In addition, you could expect at least 10% of their parents coming to visit their children every term break for holidays.

  16. Salam Tunku
You had done great justice to the people of Langkawi.
You had turned the island into an International Resort and resulted prosperity and progress in that region.
    Congrats… Malaysian.

  17. Ybhg Tun,

  18. Assalamualaikum Tun,
Lalu saya bertanya, apa bendanya? Dia jawab…bila Tun cakap “HANGPA SEMUA KENA KERJA RAJIN-RAJIN NOOOOOOOO”…
Semoga Langkawi terus hijau dan maju. Begitu juga dengan kesihatan Tun..
    ikhlas,

  19. Morning Sir,
Having living in Langkawi for nearly 20 years and calling it my home now, I feel obligated to just point out one MOST important things for everyone.
1.Medical Care – although Langkawi GH claimed to be fully equiped with all the required medical assistant, many cases are still being referred to Alor Setar GH. I personally had gone through the experience when my late newborn girl had to endure an hour and 30 minutes ferry (regular passenger) transfer to Kuala Kedah in order to receive a proper treatment and attention from a specialist. Imagine seeing your baby girl in the incubator, being manually assisted to breath for nearly 2 hours on a ferry full of tourist and curious faces! She got to Alor Setar GH after more than 2 hours journey and passed away 6 hours later. Al-Fatihah.
    – Why cant the government provide the following for Langkawi folks as well as tourist in cases of emergencies:-
    – a permanent Langkawi base, fully equip medivac helicopter?
    – a permanent Langkawi base, fully equip fast watercraft?
    – all (I mean really all of it!) of medical assistant equipment and capable personnel at Langkawi GH?
(Remember when you were warded in Langkawi GH 2 years ago or so? They had to flew in some equipment from KL! I was there Sir.)
I just wish that instead of throwing millions of ringgit in some by-election, the government would consider providing the above for the rakyat.

  20. YABhg Tun,
…sadly some people had this notion that, it is a sign of progress and development, by cutting trees, flattening hills and having concrete buildings everywhere….

  22. SALAM TUN.
    1. KALAU DULU DALAM ZAMAN PM PAK LAH , APA JUGA MASALAH YANG BERLAKU TUN AKAN SALAHKAN PAK LAH , MACAM-MACAM LA KATA….OLEH KERANA DAH TAK SUKA.
    2. DALAM ZAMAN PM NAJIB NI, LAIN PULAK RENTAKNYA……KALAU ADA MASALAH….SALAHKAN ORANG LAIN PULAK………TAK SALAHKAN PM NAJIB. MUNGKIN SAYANG KAT NAJIB KOT……
    3. DI NEGARA KITA NI, SEBAGAIMANA TUN SEDIA MAKLUM, KALAU PM TAK BERBUNYI SELAGI TU LAH DEPA-DEPA YANG BERKAITAN TAK BUAT APA2…….
    4. MUNGKIN MASING-MASING SIBUK KOT…..TUN BOLEHLAH…… DAH PENCEN…BANYAK MASA…..BOLEH KOMEN BANYAK BENDA DAN BOLEH BAGI IDEA BANYAK BENDA…….
    SEKIAN,

  23. Assalamualaikum, kehadapan Ayahanda Tun semoga sihat hendaknya.

  24. Assalamualaikum Tun
It is in deepest thought that, not only Langkawi are less green now but the hart of the people of Malaysia in particular the Malay are less and less green now since you left the PM office and Abdullah sworn in.
When Najib took the offide I assumed that we could expect ting could be better, alas! the legacy continue and it’s getting worse by the day.
There was never in history taht so much humelation on the Malay as we felt right now, seems nothing was right with the Malay,It’s adminstration,It’s politic , It’s leadership as well as Malay right are being Question and blamed fo all the set back .
UMNO the party that representing the Malay look like experiancing Mulfunction now and the Malay,
    the Malay are in delima.
I strongly belive that noting wrong with UMNO as a party, if UMNO to remain relevent they have to make serious thought of removing all the players that give negative inpact to the party and the Malays as whole, at all level, from cawangan to the peringkat tertinggi.
    Hope to see more green.
    1sekolah >1bahasa >1malaysia.

  25. Dearest Tun,
    1. I agree with Tun, especially on point #7. We must preserve the nature in Langkawi

  26. I am more concerned with the over-development penned for Redang and Perhantian over off the east coast!

  27. Awad is a small Mediterranean island off the coast of Syria. It is rocky and thus naturally bare. It is historical because the Greeks were there before. Now, it is a popular tourist site for locals and also for fishermen to land their catch.
Of the other exotic Mediterranean islands on the European side, not only the islands but the holidaymakers, picnickers etc (Tun excluded!) are bare or almost! That was not the reason for a VC of a major local university signed a MoU with a university in Malta, of all places? He was on cloud nine!
Between islands and highlands, I prefer the latter for the reason of its climate. However, the parallel betwen them is that their ecosystems are unique and delicate. Space delimit the islands. The hills and mountains on the islands/highlands are prone to erosion when the vegetation are heavily disturbed or removed.
To manage people – administrators, contractors and laymen must know geography. The power of geography is that it can destroy or rejuvenate depending on who uses it.
Much of the time untrained people are given the job to develop and manage infrastructural and beautification projects. Look at Teluk Muroh, Lumut – concretised groundscape with giant lembing regalia pointing to the sky!
Understanding and discipline are crucial towards keeping a greener environment. One evening, while camping I was apprehended by the KOA campground manager for picking pieces of dead branches to be used for firewood!

  28. Dear Dr. Mahathir,
I think you are able to help the stray dogs in Malaysia.
I used to see you riding horse at Bukit Kiara few years ago.
I therefore conclude that you love animals.
Because of the misunderstanding regarding dogs not being welcome
to some culture and religion, the dogs in the klang valley suffer
a great deal as a result of that.
I think that no matter what our beliefs and culture are, as human
beings, we have some duty to treat these animals more kindly.
It is hard life being a stray, But the malaysian especially the public
is not compassionate about these dogs. They do not want these poor
dogs to live in this earth. They complain to the authority causing
these poor dogs always being caught by the dog catcher and put them in
the pound under very bad condition.
As someone who has high regards and well respected, I would like to
urge you to highlight the poor treatment done to these stray dogs, and to
educate the people not to be unkind to them.
I know it sounds rather silly for me to bring this case to you here,
as i see the many stray dogs suffer,( and their fear of human beings, it really
    is such a sad situation.
More should be done to see to the misery of these dogs. The Government
may be able to work with NGO and give a small sum to help build a farm
to house the stray dogs instead of just dump them at the pound and let them die from disease and hunger.
One last things, why is the dogs not allowed to be walked at the park?
may be the country needs to have a few parks cater for dogs and their
owner to bring them there for exercise.
There are some parks in U.K. where one corner is seperated and fenced
    up for dogs to exercise.
Malaysia is a great country but i also believe that a nation is judged
by the ways it treats its animals.
Thank you so much for your kind attention.
I would appreciate if your assistant will reply my comment.
    gan chooi bee.

  29. Don’t chase pipe dreams again by trying to become “world famous”; do the obvious first:
    1. Clean up the garbage by the road side (improve on the garbage collection!!!)
    2. Maintain the public places and tourist attractions properly
    3. Built a proper and efficient public transport system
    4. Close down the cement factory
    5. Complete the unfinisched buildings at the Marina
After all of this will have been achieved Langkawi perhaps can become “world famous”.

Singer Nicholas Teo is Penang’s green ambassador
    By ANN TAN
GEORGE TOWN: The state government has appointed singer-actor Nicholas Teo as Penang’s “green ambassador” to help it spread awareness on environmental issues.
The expenses incurred from the appointment of the Taiwan-based Malaysian artiste, who will serve as the ambassador for a year, will be entirely borne by private sponsors.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said Teo, 29, would encourage participation of his target audience and fans in community projects on environmental issues.
“He will provide full support to the state’s green campaign, despite his tight schedule,” he said in a press conference at his Komtar office here Tuesday.
Teo, who was present, said he was honoured by appointment and would try his best to spread the green message.
“I am glad Penang has taken the initiative to start promoting the use of recyclable bags.
“I believe it is also an artiste’s responsibility to do his part for society, whenever possible,” he said, adding that he hoped to start inculcating the habit of using recyclable bags in his fans.
Phee said Teo was the state’s choice because of his wide fan base in Malaysia and the Asean region.
“As he promoteas the green campaign, he will also be promoting the brand of Penang,” he added.
Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik, who is chairman of the Penang Go Green campaign, said Teo would make his first appearance as the state’s green ambassador at the Green Concert in Juru Auto-City on June 5.
About 10,000 people are expected to attend the concert, which will also feature artistes such as Rynn Lim, Preetha, Suki Low, Yasin and Shila.//
Nicholas Teo is a local talent and the winner for ASTRO’s Chinese Talent show, apanama, few year back, and he is one of my favourite because he is talented and a clean guy… Recycle Bag is one of the green habit promoted by many businesses and this idea came from Anya Hindmarch fashion and accessories in 2008 – I’m not a Plastic Bag…….

  31. Yang Berbahagia Tun,
    Assalamualaikum WBH.

  32. Dr. Mahathir,
I could not agree more with your entry on the environment. I’ve traveled to different parts of the world and lived in different climatic settings, and I always appreciate efforts made to integrate greenery with the man-made environment. I have yet to see continuous efforts in Malaysia when it comes to environmental concerns. For instance, recycling in Malaysia is still in its infancy. In Canada, they have recycling trucks that come into neighbourhoods and they collect the recyclable materials that have been placed in blue boxes. When questioned whether these acts were mandatory, the residences responded that they weren’t. All it takes is just the effort; the sincere effort.
From what I know in Malaysia, they have recycling centres where those who want to recycle have to travel to these places and the materials will be exchanged for payment. Kuala Lumpur is a growing city but it’s growth will blossom even more beautiful when the natural landscape is taken into consideration. Heck, if Kuala Lumpur can be a garden city, that will be a grand fete that will enrich the atmosphere and not to mention contributing towards the beauty of the city.
I believe there are those living in Malaysia who are sincerely concerned with the environment. I believe it is high time the issues are addressed, actions are taken, and efforts are made. East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) belong to Borneo where it is a haven for wildlife and exotic plants. It is one of the Earth’s treasure that should be well preserved and looked after. The knowledge of the locals and their intimate relationship with the forests can help to better understand the richness of the forest.

  33. Assalamualaikum Tun, semoga sihat selalu insya’allah.

This is the first time, I feel the romantic side of your writing not like most of your writings either orders or pleas from a doctor with full of compelling reasons and evidences

  35. Salam Tun,

1)Shadow government of US.Whether exist or not.
2)Illuminati and your perspective on it.
3)Both above issues in Malaysian context.
Thanks a lot Tun.Semoga panjang umur.

  38. Assalamualaikum Tun Mahathir,
I’ve been to Langkawi so many times. You are partly responsible for bringing me to Langkawi as I was part of the team involved in Le Tour de Langkawi when they actually have a stage there.
Personally, I was pleasantly surprised and excited on the development of Langkawi years ago. I imagined that Langkawi will become a major tourism destination in the region if not the world. To me Langkawi has all the natural venues and appeal to become just that. I can say that as I have also travelled a bit around the world.
Sadly, when you step down as PM (I do not know if this is just a coincidence), the development of Langkawi seems to be going in the wrong direction. Sad, sad, sad.
But lets work together to get Langkawi back on track to become world famous. May I propose that we take care of the waters around Langkawi so that marine-based activities (yatching, boating, and sports fishing, etc.) can be developed. And may I propose that we set and enforce a time when all vehicles in Langkawi are to be powered by natural gas and/or electric only. I do believe that this will first and foremost benefit the people in Langkawi. And of course these will benefit the people of Malaysia and the world also.
And lastly, to all shops in Langkawi, the prices of goods (chocolates, gamat, etc.) have risen to a level which sometimes even higher than KL. I cannot understand this. I fear that this will also be a reason why Langkawi will be shunned by Malaysian.
    Terima kasih Tun Mahathir.

  44. Dearest Tun,
Having served in Langkawi for 3.5 years, my passion for Langkawi has never dwindled and maybe just as strong as yours..till today.
The whole of Langkawi (all 104 islands) has been endorsed by UNESCO as Langkawi Geopark since 1st June 2007. This puts Langkawi on a world standing alongside currently 64 other global geoparks under the Global Geoparks Network, UNESCO. Not many realise this.
Unlike UNESCO world heritage, the Geopark status just helps us to promote tourism and mindful of sustainable development MINUS the stipulated stringent rules of do’s and dont’s of preservation and development.
Langkawi Geopark is the way to go for the future of Langkawi. For tourism, we must capitalise on this global brand.

  46. Good morning Ayahanda Tun,
I am very tired and need to move away from politics so that I can focus on my personal (means micro-economics) issues… bayar bil ini, bil itu, semua mau bayar dengan duit…..since PM Najib and Cabinet have set 8 national economics objectives to move Malaysia to higher level income economy 20 years from now, that is 2030. These 8 national economics objectives are to create ‘real jobs’ by not manipulating and speculating KLCI aka gambling explained by blogger sdr jamal. To the Chinese community, gambling is moving to the trend similar to LAS VEGAS, LIKE SINGAPORE BUT NOT MACAU, which is an entertaimnent economics activity to add value to Malaysia Economy.
Good day Ayahanda Tun. I will just read the comments by not writing… duduk diam2, let other bloggers to write what is in their mind fully utilising Information Technology System……..which will be one of the most important information economics activity in Malaysia and Global….

  48. Assalamualaikum, kehadapan Ybhg. Ayahanda Tun.

Harapan saya seorang Melayu ingin melihat pembangunan negara Malaysia perlu melalui penambahbaikan tanpa melakukan perubahan struktur. DEB perlu dipertahankan cuma perlu penambahbaikan.
****mohon izin : sikit ulasan Sibu******
Rupanya pengaruh DAP sangat kuat. Ikut cerita Malaysian Insider, YB Tersa Kok kata faktor utama kemenangan depa ialah isu Allah dan buku “al-Kitab”. YB Teresa juga menghargai peranan beberapa OrangKuat (atau kuli2) PAS membantu menyakinkan orang Kristian bahawa PAS bersama depa. Lebai oh lebai! Akhbar rasmi PAS Harakahdaily(17 September 2009) menggangap kejayaan Sibu adalah kerana perpaduan erat PAS-DAP-PKR. lebai oh Lebai!
Tetapi saya nama lain.

    TK

  51. Dear Tun,
I’m not sure about Langkawi, but if your health permits, perhaps you should go snorkeling at the many islands of Terengganu.
While the view might still be beautiful to those who know nothing about coral biology, to those who know, the coral reefs there are but a shadow of the glory of the past – their dead!
In a few decades time, none will be left if the method of tourism now continues…
Take Redang for example, the government wants to turn it into a 5 Star island, do you think doing so will be solve the problem? And what about the not-so-rich, do they deserve any less to than the rich to enjoy the many wonders of the island?
I’m sure you are busy and all but your view on the matter would be invaluable.
    Thank you.

  52. Tun,
    Salam Tun.

  53. Salam Tun & Fellow CheDet’s Bloggers,
Indeed a good and more relevant topic to discuss. I would like to propose ” GO GREEN KEEP GREEN ” as a slogan for this campaign.
You have earlier started to place Langkawi in the world map and I am not the least surprised for your interest and love on Langkawi. You are absolutely right, as usual, to be concerned about the current state of Langkawi. If no corrective action taken to make and keep Langkawi unique as tourist attraction, there will be no reason for tourists to visit & stay in Langkawi. There goes the continuous inflow of revenue from tourism.
I would suggest that Tun initiate action to the formation of a special team of planners in the Langkawi Tourism Board who will be responsible to draw-up rules & procedures for the development of Langkawi and protect at all cost ( no corruption act to cross the hurdle ),its uniqueness and natural beauty. The member of the team should comprise recognised & respectable personalities, those with authority in the subject, sincerity and commitment in preservation of national nature heritage. We need to keep beautiful Langkawi for our future generation to still enjoy, economically and most importance, our national pride.
May Allah bless and protect us all …. Ameeen.

  54. Asalamualaikum….

  55. Salam YAB Tun,
    Wassalam.

  56. Salams Tun..
Yes Langkawi used to be my play ground..
After the curse was lifted.. It was a very peaceful santuary..
I even fell in love with an island girl then..
But that was all beautiful then. Not any more..
To much progress happenned.. From rags to riches..
Not all survived.. Most of them now even poorer than before..
And to see their land developed but without them in it..
    Kasehan…
Langkawi is still the best island to visit..
    May God bless you.
    Salams Tun..
    kuthe.

  57. dear Tun,
The way you have devoted the federal resources ,and time, the Langkawi Islands should have been made a Federal Territory,-otherwise it is not your business but that of the Kedah Menteri Besar to do the development of that island. As a then PM of Malaysia it is considered an abuse of authority, a sin for you to devote to your favorite state alone-you should have been fair to the other states also, in particular my own state of Perak. We have our own undeveloped Pangkor Island that has great potential being nearer to KL,Ipoh and Penang -which have somehow not been cared by you at all-were you not then the PM of Malaysia?Don’t you care for us Perakians?Oops..sorry for losing myself there….
Politics aside, you have indeed done a great job to turn it into a very world famous island resort. It has been my favorite for many many years until I made the mistake of discovering,a few years back ,the Perhentian and Redang Islands after which none of us esp my children ever want to go to back to Langkawi. Apart from the crystal clear waters, lush jungle and swaying palm trees, you can practically do snorkeling at the “doorsteps”.
Compared to Bali though I think Langkawi has better beaches so don’t be too unduly worried about the comparisons I’ve made with the two earlier mentioned islands. To go forward I think it is about time to bring in more multi cultural civilization into Langkawi. If your one time suggestion to make Langkawi the state capital of Kedah become a reality that would indeed do the job.Maybe you shouldn’t give up on that idea…Anyway all the best to your favorite island.

  58. Dear Tun,
I have never been to Carribean. Congrat you of being there so many times.
I have been to Langkawi several times. I used to swim at Pantai Chenang and enjoy the foods there.
I must say i admire Langkawi and praised to Allah on Langkawi’s beautiness.
I hope that the Government will always protect Langkawi naturality and keep clean the environment.
Enjoy yourself Tun. You deserved it.

  59. Tun,
    FULLSTOP.

  60. Salam Tun,
It is indeed true that Development while preserving the Nature is the best form of Modernization.. no matter it’s erecting a sky scraper or doing paradigm shifts in the hearts of Malaysians!
What you’ve initiated for Langkawi is simply awesome. I’ve been there a couple of times and to me, its ‘virginity’ is its greatest asset there is.

  61. Dear Tun,
Thank you for highlighting green Langkawi. We have similar problem in Subang Jaya. Subang Jaya was developed by Enited Estate Project(UEP) under UDA. We bought a link house there in 1982 because it was promoted as a garden township with scenic lakes. Later UEP became SIME-UEP. This new company has only profit maximization in mind. They built on every available land, public or otherwise. They even want to build condominium on the park around the lake. Public areas at the park become smaller when they built Subang Medical Centre. Recently they fenced off a few acres of the park to use as additional car park for Subang Medical Centre. What can the residents do? We wrote to newspapers, demonstrated, had dialogues with Sime-UEP. We approached state assemblyman and member of parliament and MPSJ. It is a constant battle to save Subang Jaya lake which has no public facilities at all like public toilets shades or whatever. What a shame. Subang Jaya is more developed than London, no more the garden township it was meant to be. Can we expect our government to protect the green lung represented by the subang lake?
    amin tan

  62. Salam Mesra Tun,
Langkawi is an exciting island. Actually, I would like to comment on the KeretaApi Tanah Melayu, Tanjung Pagar Station in Singapore. If Malaysia is not giving up the land there, I think it can be developed into an exciting food and shopping mall. Currently, the place have been a regular meeting place for many Singaporeans. The place has the right ambience for get together and small talk with friends and family. Then recently, I discovered that there is a small seafood restaurant right inside the KTM compound. The place is fantastic. My suggestion is maybe some big company can invest and refurbished the place. Inside the KTM will featured shops selling Malaysian products and a foodcourt selling famous Malayian foods and delicacies. Moreover the main station centre court can be used to hold cultural activities and exhibition ie Promotions by Malaysian Tourism Board.
Then there is the road leading to the seafood restaurant. Along this road, small restaurants can be built. The seafood restaurant can be revamp to make it better and more cozy. I really feel that the train station developed into an icon in Singapore. With its long standing history and perfect location, it will be a centrepoint for Singaporeans and tourist to savour a piece of Malaysia.

  63. Pak Tun, thank you for loving nature..Allah created this world for a purpose, but to due human activities, we are destroying this world where we live in.
You love Langkawi and its greenery. I love my hometown too and its greenery. But the very hometown I know years ago has changed drastically. For whatever reason (logging maybe), my hometown has been flooded 8 – 10 times a year and nobody cares and not even the government cares. The last big flood with logs floating around right at the door step, silt and mud 3 feet deep, the Majlis daerah promised some kind of compensation…but alas, no compensation came (maybe still in the post)and the peple has to fork out their own money to clear their own area. It’s all SWEAT and TEARS.
Some people gain huge profit in destroying nature while others suffer. How shall we stop them?

  65. Dear Tun Dr. M,
I’ve lived on Langkawi Island for two years. The place is beautiful, and I had a great time going to school over there. My buddies and myself would go weekly to the Samudera shopping complex and eat this delicious Nasi Ayam at the food court. That stall at the food court had a picture of you if I remember correctly.
The high school that I went to in Langkawi was MRSM Langkawi. There, is where my wife and I went to school. I also met plenty of life-long friends at the boarding school.
I so wish that MRSM Langkawi’s name would be changed to MRSM Tun Dr. M. I’m sure plenty of the educators and the alumni would agree to that name change. Although, I’m not sure if you yourself would agree with it. If there is anything that I could do personally to make that name change I would definitely try.
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Adam Johari,

  66. The destruction of our environment is due to corruption. The authorities (Local Governments)do not enforce most of the regulations required in any development to minimise the negative impact on the environment. The officials are lazy, hopeless and just wait for the developers or contractors to entertain them in various forms, money, women, expenses, and other immoral activities. These things have been going on eversince but there is no political will to put a stop to these activities.
There is no point in lamenting on the destruction that is going on in Langkawi because those responsible for the destructions are enjoying their lives(though seemingly good but definitely they just as bad as the common criminals)while the politicians are at the same time having their own get-rich agendas. Also corrupt.
Samy Vellu had announced that those people who complained about corruption to bring forward evidence. Samy is just stupid. The SPRM should be doing it, to investigate, set traps whatsover.
Unfortunately one or two cases would be highlighted only after TV3 sent Karam Sigh Wallia to find out. If this is so, then the other enforcement bodies within the local governments should be abolished and let those people find other jobs that they can really perform. Why must they wait for the media to highlight the matter, then only the officials will come to the site and most of them seemed to be very ignorant of what was going on.Come on they can’t be that stupid.

  67. Dear Tun,
When you travel down the north-south highway, somewhere near Nilai, did you see the cleared hillside? It is embarrasing especially the hill is so near the junction to KLIA and many foreigners can see how rampant the land-clearing in Malaysia is.
About Langkwai.. you are such a foresighted person that you planned the wave-breaker outside the Chenang beach.. which I believed have saved a lot of lives during the 2004 tsunami.
I am also thankful to you that you did not raise the kris in one of the ceremonies i saw on tv. Now is by the way already 21st century!
