1. When LIMA was first held in 1991, the participants were all foreigners. There were practically no Malaysian companies in the aerospace industry.
2. I was at LIMA and I found a large percentage of the exhibitors are Malaysian companies.
3. We have truly made great progress in this field. Malaysian companies are exhibiting all kinds of products produced by Malaysia. We find them producing and servicing many high tech products. They have been certified by the manufacturers of all kinds of aircrafts. In fact, they are capable of designing and producing all kinds of aerospace components and products.
4. These companies employ qualified engineers by the hundreds. In fact, many of their engineers have been enticed to work with foreign companies. Government policy allow for foreigners to set up engineering companies in Malaysia manned by engineers from local companies.
5. Truly LIMA has come a long way in the aerospace and maritime industries. If the Government is supportive, we can go even further.
6. Malaysia’s industrialisation has succeeded. In the past 80% of out exports consisted of raw materials like rubber, palm oil and tin. Today, if I am not mistaken 80% of our exports is made up of manufactured goods.
7. Actually we can do better. We have tremendous resources. But we are not making full use of these resources.
8. The New Economic Policy is not a failure. It is lack of ideas and policies that prevented Malaysia from becoming a developed country by 2020.
9. It is a pity.
