2. I was invited to see the new F1 car being developed by Dato Seri Tony Fernandes and Dato Kamaruddin Meranun at the facilities they had acquired in Norwich, England. I had promised to sit in and start the engine of this car if it could be built in the short time they had before the first F1 race in Bahrain in March. I was pleasantly surprised that by the time I arrived on February 22, not only could I sit in the racer and start the engine but the car itself had been undergoing trial races in Spain. They had brought back the car for me to sit in and start the engine. The next day they were to take the car back to Spain for further speed trials.
3. I was glad to see quite a number of Proton engineers working on the production and assembly of the car.
5. My next stop was the Lotus factory where the Elise and Evora sports cars were being produced. Lotus had not done well and was losing money. But the new CEO, Dany Bahar has put new life into the management bringing in experienced people from well-known racing teams and sports car producers.
6. New sports cars were being designed and they looked as good as the Ferraris and the Aston Martins. I test drove a turbo-charged Proton Exora, an electric Tesla which Lotus was building for an American company and the Lotus Evora.
7. A lot of Proton engineers were working with Lotus engineers contributing to the development of Lotus cars.
8. The next day I flew to Turin, Italy to see the lubricant plant which had been bought by Petronas. It was again heartening to see Malaysians among the top executives of the company.
9. The final stop was the design firm of Giugiaro together with Proton which were designing a new small car and a redesigned Persona for Proton. Some 20 Malaysian designers and engineers were working on these projects together with the Italians.
10. It may be remembered that one of the objectives of going into the automotive industry was to develop Malaysia’s engineering capability. Seeing all these Malaysians in the development of sophisticated automotive designing and engineering work seems to indicate that we have largely acquired engineering design, development and production to put us on the road to becoming a developed country.
11. Some people said that the price of cars in Malaysia is very high because the Government is protecting Proton. Actually the high price is due to the Government’s attempt to discourage petrol guzzling big cars. Whether there is Proton or not Malaysians will pay a high price for their cars. Cheap cars will lead to even worse jams than now.
12. Most people started to own cars only after Proton cars were produced. Such was the increase in the usage of cars that in one 10-year period, Proton cars contributed 18 billion Ringgit towards Government revenue. Considering that the total Government investment was only RM480 million Ringgit in 1984-85, the returns on the investment must be considered very high. The people as a whole must benefit from Government expenditure of this large sum of money.
13. Besides, Proton supports about 300,000 workers, vendors and their families. It produces almost 200,000 cars yearly. If we import foreign cars at RM25,000 per car, the outflow of money would add up to approximately RM5,000,000,000 or five billion Ringgit. Even after deducting some component imports the amount saved in foreign exchange is huge.
14. At one stage there were rumours of an attempt to practically bankrupt Proton so as to sell it off cheaply. This was what happened to Agusta. Proton has assets which the buyers can develop profitably. But I am glad that these are just rumours and no one talks about it anymore. If a person looks at the whole picture he will appreciate that Proton is too valuable an asset to sell for RM4.
Dear Tun
I mean no disrespect. But let me refer to what you said:
“11. Some people said that the price of cars in Malaysia is very high because the Government is protecting Proton. Actually the high price is due to the Government’s attempt to discourage petrol guzzling big cars. Whether there is Proton or not Malaysians will pay a high price for their cars. Cheap cars will lead to even worse jams than now.”
I believe you are in denial here because the point does not make any sense at all.
The price of imported cars in Malaysia is obviously very high due to the exorbitant taxes imposed on them to protect proton. If you were really trying to discourage petrol guzzling, why aren’t Protons taxed 100-300% as well?
Furthermore, if indeed cars are taxed so much to prevent petrol guzzling, then it just shows that your government is extremely unfair to the people. I will accept such an argument if we had impeccable public transport like Singapore or the UK. But with the state of things in Malaysia, someone would really struggle without a car, and hence, there would be no reason to discourage people from owning cars (big or small). And if you were really serious about emissions, you would’ve taken very stern action against bus and lorry operators that emit god-knows-what.
So I would like to assert my view on the issue: foreign cars are taxed like crazy to protect Proton. This has been the case for many many years, and yet Proton seems to be very complacent and taking the protection for granted. They make cars half-heartedly: people have to open their doors at toll booths due to power window failure, and it is common for buttons to fail in the car (e.g. in all our 3 Perdanas, the aircod buttons are so dodgy and can just turn off without warning). I can only hope that proton seriously bucks up and produces car that can actually compete with other cars without protection. If not, we’ll be stuck in this frustrating situation forever.
Unimpressed
Dear Dr Mahathir,
i’d work a while in PROTON R&D Division in Facilities Dep supporting the research activities. Yes you are right. As a malaysian, i am proud to see lot of passion our own engineers designing and working from shop floor to top for production of proton cars. i’d been to one production line which was a handmade production chain, it was lotus car production if im not mistaken and i met the tech and engineers who were there.
i shortly experienced dealing with ixora engineers for presentation of royal visit to the R&D and have a change to look into the initial design of ixora as well other stuffs in the workshop. it was amazing to see their professionalism and creativity. the VDP programme also worked well as meet the national agenda requirement. actually they can do more better for other models, perhaps due to other consequence and priority, they had to optimized to make the margin and sustain the business.
yes, i also agree there are lot of improvement need to be made. perhaps paultan or other should be expert on this hehe. what i can lastly comment, despite up and down, PROTON is persevere and resilience by their own way. not only that, the people matter also must be looked into seriously especially to the loyal technician in the workshop/production lines. like hassan merican ever said in one of his policy address, “people is the biggest asset in a company ..”
hoping their current undergoing change management programme will put their level par with other player and successful company.
PROTON is one of your best contribution to Malaysia by looking it holistically from economy, capability and credibility points of view, despite other cons.
Thanks! Rgrds
TUN,
pls explain to me why proton selling cheap in other country?why malaysian been burden with higher price of its own national car?pls explain to make me think that government is not taking advantage of its own RAKYAT…
Dear YAB Tun, salam bahagia harap sihat sejahtera.Kiriman saya dgn izin..
………..KAMBING BOER DAN KAMBING BIRI BIRI
US, Korea, Japan protects their local companies (from foreign competition) equally without discrimination. M’sia protects Proton (one company only) by tying up other local players. Can Korea have Hyundai, Kia, Samsung or Japan Toyota, Honda, Nissan if they protected only one company and bind everybody else?
Restrictions on imports are understandable to protect local industry, but to suppress other local players (CKD) or choke off same privileges to other local companies?
…………TAXES OR TAXING
High taxes to discourage car ownership, reduce oil consumption is hollow justification for Proton. The huge amount of tax rebates (exemption) given to Proton pales in comparison to the oil subsidy to big cc cars. Proton paid 18bil tax despite subsidy from govt! Imagine the lost taxes?
The increased number of lower cc car sales (tax exemption for Proton), consumes more than what is saved from big cc import restrictions. Masuk angin keluar asap! If you want to reduce congestion, cut fuel subsidy, save foreign exchange, tax everybody equally!
Import duties are legitimate tax. Giving exemption to Proton (not the whole local industry) is unfairly taxing the others.
1) PROTECTIONISM
Why do you guys condemning gov for protecting Proton? why not condemn US gov for protecting GM and other giants with trillions of dollars? Explain to me why we can

UK to produce Nissan electric car
Nissan is to build its new electric car at its Sunderland plant, the Japanese company has announced.
Production of the Leaf, which runs entirely on lithium-ion batteries, will begin in 2013 and forms part of a £420m investment in electric cars.,
The production of about 50,000 a year at the factory is expected to safeguard hundreds of jobs.
The investment is backed by a £20.7m government grant and up to £220m from the European Investment Bank.
‘Vote of confidence’
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said the latest development was a “fantastic vote of confidence in the Sunderland plant and its excellent workforce”.
Sunderland had already been named as the site to produce Nissan’s electric car batteries, creating 350 new jobs. About 60,000 will be made there when production begins next month.
Lord Mandelson said: “By working together we can achieve our aim of making the UK a world-leader in ultra-low carbon vehicles.”
Nissan said the Leaf hatchback would be the world’s first affordable mass-produced zero emission car.
Senior vice president Andy Palmer said it would go on sale later this year and the UK was the third country to produce it after Japan and the United States.
Nissan’s Sunderland plant is the UK’s largest car factory, employing 4,000 people and producing about a third of the cars made in the UK.
It was founded in 1984 and built its five millionth vehicle in June 2008.
The car battery programme has already seen Nissan invest £179m there.
Last year, Nissan’s chief executive Carlos Ghosn underlined his company’s commitment to its electric cars programme.
“The electric car will account for 10% of the global market in 10 years,” he told BBC News.
The firm has not yet revealed how much the car will cost.
ANALYSIS
By Jorn Madslien, business reporter, BBC News Nissan had already said that it would invest some 200m euros in a battery factory near its Sunderland manufacturing plant, yet it was never a given that the company would also produce its Leaf electric car here too. Its investment in the region is now set to be doubled.
The North East’s efforts to gear up its electric motoring infrastructure and the UK government’s recent decision to subsidise buyers of electric cars to the tune of £5,000 obviously helped the Japanese automotive giant make up its mind.
But in the end, the right to produce the car and thus secure thousands of jobs in an otherwise economically depressed region was earned by the Nissan factory’s management and workers.

I don’t understand why some people are questioning the government’s protection over Proton. Surely one would protect their own children over others. Look at South Korea for instance, just see how fiercely they protect Hyundai. So, why can’t we do the same?
Stay healthy.
Askm Tun!
Sebagaimana kita ketahui banyak sangat komen berkenaan kualiti kereta nasional kita Proton.

This person seems to have a personality problem being in an ethnic group that is very vague and from country of origin unknown. If the person is from India then I would say that the person lacks the ingredients of a true Indian which will have the module of the Great Mathama Gandhi.I am sure the person is not the Malaysian Indian since the remarks made is unbecoming of a Malaysian.
It is sad for the whole Indian community here in Malaysia to have themselves associated with someone that wants to reflect the stand and thinking of true Malaysian as well as Indians in India.
I would suggest that this person have a blog and spells out then we will know the facts of the matter.
I would like to bring to the attention of gunse007 that the great Mathma Gandhi also made mistakes in his life time and so does the brits who took everything of what is rightfully Indians and yet they are still being portrayed as Master.
Most of the subsidy provided by the government are for the people regardless and the big chunk is PETROL and if you view the Malaysian roads then you will wonder who gets the big chunk of it.
Europe and America provides high subsidy to their farming industry and if you would want to argue then we can say that farmers in Europe and America are a worthless lot right? they are just like the Malays as everyone seems to portray, but then who are the farmers that provided vegetables for the markets and Hyper markets in Malaysia? so why don’t you focus your worse enemies that way?
If you want to view it in a different context then it would be good if you make a case study of why these government of European countries and America having a master plan for their farming industry. Have you viewed the China government policy for their Industries in providing subsidies?
A story for you since I have Indians friends all my life working and social that is:- A policeman looking at a bloodied Indian which he rescued from a wreck car at a round about somewhere in Shah Alam on a drizzling Friday night. The police man was trying to wipe of blood that was all over the Indian guy but he was asked to stop abruptly by the Indian guy indicating that he would sue the policeman for harassment since there is body contact, so the policeman instead asked the Indian man some questions to make sure that the guy does not have brain damage or something to the matter. The first question that came from the policeman is that how in the world that the Indian guy car shoot straight into the round about and smack right into a big tree in the middle and the answer given by the Indian guy is simple, ” when I came to the junction of the round about suddenly the round about came to me, I will sue the local council for negligence, the police for harassment, the Malaysian government for attempted murder and the prime minister for being incompetent. I rest my case.

My Dearest Tun Always,
Again and again you have proof your abilities as a man of wisdom visioning for the country and again many wants to deny this of you.
When you created PROTON as the national car entity, many amongst the learned, the scholars, business analyst, political analyst, business community, politician and many more came out in full force condemning you and yet these are the same people giving you credit of the success of a national brand that has transform the country.
Along the creation of the national car, you planned support industries in creating an economic platform for the nation. The next thing for all the professionals that took the helm managing these entity should have the vision like yours to have continuity in planning for the future and strategies like in all other business entity.
We hope to see more people like Dato’ Nazmi Salleh taking the industry further of its potentials and we hope that all the political appointments meets the criteria.
We cant deny further that what you gave to the nation and what good came from it, its just not PROTON workers alone but its over whelming to say that it is in the form of providing ongoing opportunities to millions of rakyaat and thousands of supports industries.
I hope people can view it openly in the form of laymen, do not deny a persons contribution for the country and its not only about the Malays that PROTON is created, its for the nation. Broad your mind view the Malaysian roads, view the industry and see for your self who profit more from it? MAHATIR MOHAMED THE LEGEND.

Hi, Tun & Others
Dear HBT,
I’m the man who has no plenty of time to comment in Tun’s blog..It’s not more than 10 i supposed..Most of my comment not against Tuns’ accept when it’s about proton.Tun issue on proton that I followed was only 3. So is it really complaint..complaint? Don’t waste your ‘air liur’ then, because it’s damn smellier than Porky Pigs’.
I’m not literally saying proton is such a waste(I was once saying that the quality of Gen-2 is not that bad compare to Vios in commenting Malaysian perception towards Malaysian product)..
My idea was:
It’s hard for a middle class person to own a car..Some might say, “lot of people out there still can afford what”..Yes..but still, to consider to have a quality life and fulfill other basic needs, we’re in a such big loss whereby some of us not even realize it..
What alternative we have?..Do we have a good public transportation system?..
The vision of Proton suppose to have is pursuing happiness to peoples..I mean majority of people..A true happiness of Malaysian is to have a better quality of life. As such, to blindly bear to support “things” as patriotic without considering what’s the actual result(to majorities)is daydreaming. Tun once said Japanese may able to sell their car cheaper because their market is overwhelming while proton still need the on going protection(this much-until now-this much) to stay put in this niche. And now, Tun says it has something to do with the petrol guzzling issue..Do you really buy it..I suppose you are smart person dude..Are you in the automotive industry? Do you really know what’s really happening? Tun actually knows it..I’m still waiting for his genuine explanation.
If just in terms of language of Vision & Patriotic you want to doubt me, I really pity you then..:)
Regards
HRS

what a crap from gunse007…petrol prices in Thailand cheap ah?cheaper than Malaysia?
Jeng3//
Dear JJJ,
What to do, this gunse 007 (7=PKR members?) has no choice kerana mungkin berasa takut hilang rezeki tidak diizinkan Tuhan. Now quite a number of MPs are frog diving and jumping due to our Government TAK NAK petrol dipakai warga asing. Since we have a highly advance submarine which can dive now, it is time for our Government to regulate and monitor these inappropriate behaviour eg:- petrol (oil) smuggling. Maybe this is the reason why petrol price is cheaper in Thailand.
Take care Ayahanda Tun.

The current management is definitely better than the ‘old wine’ from the 90’s. These ‘old wine’ are chosen not because they are good, they are chosen because they can talk. Consumers are smarter and wiser than those in the 90’s, lu tak ke?
this country is a low income nation and will get worse unless better people become ministers.
the fact is thailand, spore and indonesia can pay for higher petrol prices is a fact that their spending power is better than here.
just afraid, robert mugabe of zimbabwe will like to live here 10yrs from now when these both countries reach parity.

Assalamualaikum Ayahnda Tun & Bonda,
izinkan anaknda,
betul tu kekanda ahmadkamal, ramai sgt yg tidak pandai menjaga tuturkata terhadap org tua terutamanya anak2muda yg masuk ke blog Tun semata2 dgn hajat menghina, mencaci & tak habis2 menyindir, mengutuk, mengata bahkan ada yg meletakkan kesemua keburukan yg berlaku di negara ini ke atas Tun! rasa bijak sgtla mereka tu!
tanyalah diri anda sendiri yg terlalu suka sgt menghentam Tun, dapatkah anda lakukan lebih baik dari apa yg telah Tun buat utk negara kita tercinta ini? kalau setakat nak menyalahkan Tun semata2, tak payahlah.
ada yg mengaku engineer itu ini, cubalah rekabentuk, ubahsuai atau cadangkan mekanisma bagaimana nak atasi masalah power window yg anda bangkitkan berkali2 tu? nama saja ir, engineer tapi cakap tak serupa bikin. kalau masuk sini kata ka Tun ‘saya dah berjaya merekacipta satu alat yg boleh melancarkan power window tu Tun!’ barulah boleh mendabik dada. tu pun, kalau org beriman mereka tidak akan mendabik dada sebaliknya bersujud & syukur kpd Tuhan kerana diberikan akal utk membawa kebaikan kpd semua. ini tidak, suka mendabik dada kerana pandai mengkritik & menghentam sj.
kalau tak suka proton, tak payah beli, tak payah hentamla kerana ramai lagi org lain yg suka & cintakan barangan buatan negara sendiri. tak ada orang paksa anda beli proton pun. kalau anda terpaksa beli juga kerana bajet ciput, TERPAKSALAh anda telan sj, jgn la marah2. takkanla pakai proton rasa macam pakai bmw? terimalah hakikat kekurangan diri. bersyukur kerana itu sj yg anda mampu. kalau tak suka jugak, nasib…
saya tabik kepada jurutera2 automobil negara kita kerana berjaya menghasilkan kereta berjenama negara yg setanding dgn jenama luar negara. kereta2 buatan luar negarapun ada kesilapan & terpaksa di tarik balik dari pasaran, di ganti alat & sebagainya, apa nak pelik dgn proton yg baru 25 tahun berada di pasaran? orgmuda umur 25 tahun sempurna sangatkah perlakuan mereka? orgtua 52 tahun pun ada yg tak sempurna!!! kita masih perlu bertatih dan belajar memperbaiki & mempertingkatkan pengeluaran kereta negara kita. apa salahnya kita terus belajar & mengiktiraf dayausaha pintar jurutera2 kita, menghargai kebolehan mereka & membantu memberikan pendapat2 yg baik? ini masalahnya. jika barang luar, rosakpun sanggup terima kerana duit dah banyak dilabur. tapi kalau jenama kita sendiri susah nak terima, dasar lidah bercabang.
satu lagi, kalau nak kata Tun yang salah, menyebabkan ramai pengguna proton mati dijalanraya kerana mutu kereta proton tidak setanding kenderaan lain, bolah tak kita jugak salahkan pemimpin negara lain yg tidak secara langsung menjadi penasihat dlm industri negara mereka, jika kereta BMW, mercedes, nissan, toyota & jenama2 lain menyebabkan ramai jugak yg maut dlm kemalangan menggunakan kenderaan2 tersebut? tentunya tidak kerana mereka ini mempunyai dasar lidah bercabang, manusia yg sengaja suka mencemuh barangan negara sendiri & meletakkan segala kesalahan pd Tun semata2. tidakkah kemalangan kebanyakannya hasil dari kelalaian/kecuaian pemandu? bawak kereta kebal pun boleh maut jika kepala otak pemandu dirasuk semasa memandu!!! cuai, laju, mengantuk, mabuk, berlumba, perasan hebat…banyak punca2 lain…
mereka tak pernah menghargai jasa yg Tun lakukan kepada negara. saya rasa mereka ini juga jenis yg tidak tahu menjaga tuturkata mereka kpd org tua mereka sendiri, guru2, ustaz2, org2 tua di sekeliling mereka, kawan rakan atau sesiapa shj. mereka lebih menjunjung budaya barat yg mengajar anak2 muda bersikap kurang hajar terhadap org tua. tengok sjlah sitcom tv yg terlalu menonjolkan kebiadapan anak2 muda terhadap org di sekeliling mereka hatta ibubapa mereka sendiripun. menyampah sgt jika tertengok sitcom2 berbaur kurang hajar ni kerana pembentukkan peribadi anak2 mudah terjejas dgn perkara2 begini.
kepada anak2muda yg suka menghina, menyindir Tun @ sesiapa sj yg anda suka semata2 kerana menganggap anda sj yg betul, tunggulah masa anda akan tiba suatu hari nanti. jika anda percaya hukum karma (kerana kami percaya qada&qadha’ Tuhan), ‘life is a circle, young man, your day as an old person will come, definitely & at that time you’ll be facing the worse if not the same thing- being ignored & jeered by others…’ jika selama hidup, anda tidak pernah menghargai org tua anda, menghargai jasa pemimpin2, guru2, ketua tempat kerja atau sesiapa saja org keliling anda, masa anda kan sampai jua.
anaknda & ramai lagi peminat setia Ayahnda yg lain sentiasa mendoakan kebaikan utk Ayahnda berbanding mereka yg suka bersahabat dgn syaitan & menghina, menghentam Ayahnda. moga2 sebahagian kita & anakcucu kita tidak termasuk dlm golongan pengikut iblis.
semoga Ayahnda Tun & Bonda dalam peliharaan Allah SWT selalu hendaknya, InsyaAllah.
Wassalam.
just my brain wave…
So you’re admitting that he’s doing a better job than your Tengku Mahaleel????

what a crap from gunse007…petrol prices in Thailand cheap ah?cheaper than Malaysia?

assalamualaikum Tun..

No. 2 …..They had brought back the car for me to sit in and start the engine. The next day they were to take the car back to Spain for further speed trials.”
what a waste of money again, they bring the car from Spain to England just to let you sit in it and start the engine, then the next day bring it back to Spain for further testing.
that shows how wasteful you are.
dont criticize badawi and khairy when you are just like them or even worse.//
Dear gunse007,
Kalau tak faham tanyalah orang, bacalah satu kali lagi apakah maksud tersiratnya, Ha….Ha….Ha….
Good night Ayahanda Tun.
P.S. MCA poll is set on March 28, after this election, there will be another election because the loosers cannot back off
now….. maybe because of the “Sell Before Build” Concept implemented by who? Ayahanda Tun, you know Lah, siapakah adik-beradik itu…..
Ketua JAIS instructed Selangor halal logo is a must for restaurant operators in Selangor. They must apply through JAIS or JAKIM, not through the other 6 Halal logo Administrators and given them 3 months to settle the new cases. What took him so long to annouce this decision? Nanti rakyat akar umbi salah faham dan marah JAIS (Muslim) ini suka flip & flop.. tak baik dan tidak adil kepada muslim yang betul2 muslim like abg samuraimelayu, kamal ahmad and owlz, etc….
Assalamualaikum ayahanda Tun,
Terkejut jugak mendengar reaksinya. Katanya dia pun merasai apa yang saya alami semasa memandu kereta BARU saya, lantas dicadangkan supaya memaklumkan masalah tersebut apabila membuat servis pertama. Dipendekkan cerita, sampai sekarang pemanduan kereta saya tersasar ke kiri walaupun dah berpuluh kali membuat alignment-balancing dan menukar keempat-empat tayar baru. Aku pasrah….
Kalau ingin kuatkan bunyi semasa mendengar radio, ditukarnya station radio. Semasa mendengar cd, ditukarnya track lain. Lantas diajukan kepada jurujual, cadangan sama dilontarkan. Dipendekkan cerita, sampai sekarang saya pasrah dengan kecacatan kereta BARU saya walaupun dah banyak kali ulangalik ke Proton Edar & EON Servis….
3. Beberapa bulan pakai kereta BARU, sensor lampu untuk pintu dah rosak. Aku pasrah lagi….
3. Kurang setahun pakai kereta baru, tayar ASTAR yang bunga tayar masih lagi baru dah merekah di tepi. Aku pasrah lagi kerana kena tukar tayar baru.
4. Selepas setahun memandu kereta BARU, aku merasakan tertipu dengan Promosi Proton Merdeka Sale kerana duit rebet pembelian masih belum diperoleh sehinggalah ke hari ini. Aku pasrah lagi kerana jurujual memberitahu belum menerima cek dari Proton.
5. Yang terbaru, satu power window dah rosak. Seakan-akan benda bergoleh-golek dalam pintu apabila kereta dibrek & cermin tersangkut-sangkut. Mekanik Proton cakap, sah power window rosak! Katanya lagi, biasalah Proton Waja. Bila dicongak aku pasrah lagi, kerana usia kereta baru 3 tahun.
Kini, kereta BARU saya bukan lagi BARU.
Tun..
KENAPA TAK JAWAP TENTANG POWER WINDOW??
Ribuan terima kasih Tun dan moderator..:(((
JJJ,
by the way, you were talking about high petrol prices in spore… well spore and HK have high salary 5 times more per capita than malaysia … and better public transportation system.
not to forget
India which so called poor country…
since some ppl here talk about shelved petrol price (as usual BN flip flop) and tun fond of speaking about indians , how could india retail petrol price is at Rs. 52 (RM3.83) (with sales tax etc)today….
yet malaysians crying for subsidy at petrol price RM1.80/RM2.05….if so called ppl in ‘poor’ india can buy petrol at double the malaysian price, thats just show how good is your BN administration.
JJJ,
i am talking about car prices in thailand and indonesia…u are talking about singaporeans…what a crap.
whats the point of producing cars with tongkat from the government.
millions of malaysians riding a ready made coffin on the roads…. how many thousands died because of unsafe cars that break in two upon collision.
to have malaysia inject capital for this F1 is sheer arrogance and stupidity of all those approved and support lotus to race.
This country is led by a Pak Pandir and Angan-angan Mat Jenin gangs.
After wasting billions of dollars and getting “top 3 last places” for the next 10 years to come, u people will realize.
We are not happy with F1 and your stupid Monsoon Cup in Terengganu.
The only thing I support is Petronas involvement in sponsoring and enhancing their fuel and lubricant market.
Even people like Hassan Merican (capable person) thrown out for so called reach ‘retirement age’ 57yrs.
Many politician after age 55 still dont get lost from the Rakyat.
you said “I was pleasantly surprised that by the time I arrived on February 22, not only could I sit in the racer and start the engine but the car itself had been undergoing trial races in Spain. They had brought back the car for me to sit in and start the engine. The next day they were to take the car back to Spain for further speed trials.”
what a waste of money again, they bring the car from Spain to England just to let you sit in it and start the engine, then the next day bring it back to Spain for further testing.
that shows how wasteful you are.
dont criticize badawi and khairy when you are just like them or even worse.
Dear Hero 9305,
With regards to your statement
“Something not right, for a country to sponsor 2 F1 team it makes no sense when Toyota, BMW and Honda had pull out due to requirement of heavy financial resources. How deep is our pocket?”
I stand to be corrected but the funds for the Lotus 1 Malaysia Team is gathered by a group of business owners in Malaysia and does not involve governments money or some would prefer to address it as tax payers money. As for Mercedes. Petronas is the sponsor of the team, and I believe it is done on its own capacity as a business entity and is strictly a business decision i.e. benefits it gets from the publicity.
Yes Honda and Toyota has pulled out, but that does not mean that Malaysian businesses has to heed to the action. Petronas is a solid and financially stable company, and if they (Petronas) feels its an economically good decision to continue sponsoring an F1 team, then it is their call. And just in case someone tries to argue that Petronas’s money is taxpayers money, no, I beg to differ. Its their money and what is due to the taxpayers has been given via the billions paid to the government in form of taxes, special dividends and oil royalty.
I hope people will stop linking the funds of GLC’s or Malaysian business as taxpayers money. The portion paid as dividend, tax, and royalties…that is the taxpayers portion.
Hi, Tun & Others
Again and again…The same old story..Vision –> Patriotic ->Proton
Hey Malaysian…Wake Up!!!…
Damn to all those macroeconomic theories, Metaphors, False Patriotism idea..
Simple Math here:
Example
A man name Ahmad(has degree in Mech Eng,humble, hardworking, enthusiast)
a)Job: Manufacturing Officer/Exec (take as proton employee
also ok)
b)Year of service = 4-5years
c)Salary = Average RM3000/mth
d)Car : i)Gen-2 CPS, Monthly pay=RM650(for 9 years)
ii)to ‘move’ the car & able to come to work: Fuel=RM10/day–>
RM10 X 20days = RM200
===> NOW it is 28.33% of salary/mth
Not include the needs to pay toll, breakdown, maintenance, insurance & road tax..Please imagine how hard is that to have an’our’ CAR in Malaysia.
How bout other expenditure??(food, house rent, life insurance, saving, hobby, magazine, children tuition fees, bills, balik kampung, cloth and so many others)
Pls further imagine, how hard is that for:
1) Factory operator
2) Storekeeper
3) Bank clerk
4) Restaurant cashier
and many others
some of them have to work their aXX even much harder than most of those politicians..Alternative?? Using bus? commuter? LRT in Shah Alam,Penang? Motorbike?
Mahathir-san:
Pls take a look back on your Look East policy..Do you really understand why Japanese so proud of their National car? Is that only come from their ‘samurai’ spirit..NO!!! It’s the Quality + the Price that relatively Cheap to their Salary..You simply can find a factory operator who can afford to drive a Honda Oddessey in their ‘Kampung’..
It’s OK to have a vision..I’m not anti-establishment..BUT, we Malaysian, must understand PRIORITIES..
PROTON,
Again..Please bring RESULT..something that can really make we, Malaysian really ‘proud’ of..

Dearest YAB dan DiKasihi Tun,
I am so PROUD of you Tun! You are so energetic. I am much younger than Tun, but I don
salam Tun,
you have done great things for proton.but the sales of proton whatever claim made by the management still slow and dragging.not only price but competition with other world models is very stiff. i have a suggestion how to make the sales of proton move faster than what it is now. treat the proton cars as commodity and get the world traders to trade the commodity.i understand a proposal for such move was made to the former chairman, but rejected because he wanted to teach the Africans to service proton. imagine Tun in Malaysia we see a lot of Japanese and Korean cars and we did not see a single Japanese or Korean here to teach the Malaysian how to service their cars! if proton produces 200,000 cars yearly (under commodity terms) instead of 40,000 cars presently the turnover will be billion and the jobs created for the locals will be tremendous .to gain the benefits however, allocate each share of proton to all Malaysian 18 years and above. then proton really become a MALAYSIAN CAR and all Malaysian will be proud of proton and especially you Tun the architect of Malaysian automobile industry.
Yes,I totally agreed with Tun we must proud of Proton.
In this 20 over years Proton growth with us together espeically born on 70 or 80’era.
My 1st car is Proton Saga
2nd car is Proton Satria
3rd car is Proton Waja
Actually I’m not the supporter of Proton but due to the price,I need to drive Proton as Japanese car price is much higher than Proton price.I also can said that been owner of Proton,I feel the quality is worse because Proton realibity only is 2 years and after that God bless us as we need to visit our mechanic so regularly. Not only power window unsolved which from 1986 Proton Saga launch but still now.
Currently I’m driving Proton Waja, car is so call cheap and also on the spare part but sad to said that we always change this and that,do really Proton is afforadable to middle income like us.
Like Proton Wira, how long is the model been running on the road,I think almosts 10 years which same as Waja, change little accessories then is new model.I’m not condeming Proton but hopeless to Proton but what to do,the cheapest among other car and we no choice just buy and complain. 😛
By the way,we still can proud of Proton atleasts S.E.A. countries don’t have their own car brands but still hopeless on the quality..
All of you may not agree with me but this is only my personal opinin.
Tun,so sorry on my comment but I’m still proud of Proton can sell so low price at other countries but not in Malaysia.Kena makan goreng pisang again as my car need to see my regular mechanic again.
Malaysia Boleh..

I am a supporter of Tun’s in most cases. He is a great statesman with unquestionable credentials. I firmly believe, without Tun’s ‘jasa’ or contribution, Malaysia would not be as developed as we are now. However, like Ir. Syahrizan, on this particular topic I dont think I agree. If you look past your BN tinted eye-glasses, you will see that Ir. Syahrizan has posted numerous comments complimenting and agreeing with Tun in various previous blog entrys. In fact, I found his comments one of the most refreshing. The only time Ir. Syahrizan disagreed with Tun was on Proton, which tells me his remarks or thoughts are not from prejudice (unlike many here who blindly discredit/worship everything Tun says).
Proton in itself is not a bad idea. Honda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai all started the same way. Indeed national brands need some form of protection against the global giants. The pride of building your own car can not be ignored/overlooked. In fact, I am more than willing to pay a little premium to ensure Proton thrives. But… and this is a big B-U-T, Proton has failed to live up to its side of the bargain. Its suppose to grow and succeed such that it no longer depends on the rakyat. In fact, it should be contributing to the nations economy by now, just like Honda, Toyota, Kia etc.
Instead Proton still produces sub standard cars at non competitive prices. The after sales service is crap and the problems with the car has become the butt of jokes for years now. Proton has taken the support of the counrty and rakyat for granted… aiming to live off the concessions. That was never the idea. Proton has to make better cars, at a lower price!! It must be able to produce with the big boys. Its been too long that Proton has taken to get where it is, and the burden of its failures are being shoved to the rakyat. If Proton had made the most of our support, it would have been able to use its profits to improve R & D, remove all its stupid defects while at the same time reducing the cost. Simple business strategy/principles. Instead it feels comfortable just plowing along and saying sales are good, as if the countrys support is never ending.
I am all for national pride and world recognition but it must come with hard work and a will to improve. At the moment, thats not the case. Italians are proud of Ferrari’s, the Germans with their BMWs, the French with their Peugeots, Japs with their Toyo…opps, Honda’s. But ask the average Malaysian on the street if he/she is proud of their Proton? They will say they only own one cause the cant afford the imports!
Something not right, for a country to sponsor 2 F1 team it makes no sense when Toyota, BMW and Honda had pull out due to requirement of heavy financial resources. How deep is our pocket?
High prices of cars only benefited the AP holders or so called “cronies”, will not benefit the rakyat.
Salam Tun & fellow CheDet’s Bloggers,
Good leader must lead and must lead to where no man has gone before. Sound familiar?
In the process, leader must have the courage to commit on ideas that can benefit his “followers” for generation to come and create history. Naturally, some may not agree ( for some reasons or another but in Malaysia, politic has been top of the list) and will do their best to condemn such leader especially when something went wrong. Some ( pengkhianat )even take the trouble to sabotage ( internationally, bad mouth about everything the government does and calling the world support )as to cause further damage thus justify their views for not agreeing to you.
What happen to you is not exception. But history will be and has been the judge for your many “crazy” decisions. Among the feathers on your hat were Proton( the laughing stock of the automotive nations such as British and Italian but you should have the last laugh ), Petronas Twin tower ( still the highest twin tower in the world ), KLIA ( yet to achieve the potential – hoping you are still around to complete it ), F1 ( putting Malaysia in the world map – now in your effort to revive Lotus ), North-South Highway ( even the once hard-headed protestor, Lim Kit Siang, is unshamefully, quietly and happily enjoying the ride ) and Putrajaya ( not yet completed but has already the envy of many foreign governments). The saviour of all (and the classic one) will be your daring and most courageous decision TO DO MY WAY in handling the country financial crisis in defiance to all local “experts” and world experts’ prediction. Not surprise to DSIA’s and his harden supporters’ consideration of the opposite. Kenapa? Wallau’alam.
People with large brain think and talk of ideas
People with average brain think and talk of issues
People with tiny brain think and talk of people – and many are among us as proven from some of those who have participated in your blog.
May Allah bless us all and for you to have and maintain healthy body, mind and soul and have the courage to continue to serve the nation until your last breath, irrespective your position in the society. Just forget about the people with the tiny brain.
YABhg Tun,
…keep it up sir.

Assalamualaikum Tun.
Nak jadi pemandu F1 kena bersedia dari semua segi.
Ambik selekoh pun dah 4G, macam bawak fighter jet.Tengkuk pun kena training bagi keras masa corner.Lengan pun kena main besi bagi kuat pegang stering.
Lepas campur tolak kuranglah berat badan 3kg lepas setiap pertandingan.Mental pun kena sentiasa fokus.
InsyaAllah.

Assalamualaikum Tun,
I am glad reading on Proton’s progress. Being a Malaysian, I too am proud of Proton, especially on the performance of their Malaysian engineers and executives (malays I presume) , having brought Proton to this level.Keep up the good work! I can almost see the happy faces of Proton’s new management team and board of directors reading Tun’s latest article. Now Tun is on their side.
However, for para 11, I beg to differ with regard to the high prices of cars is to discourage petrol guzzling big cars and reduce traffic jams. I remember the US and European countries having campaigns to discourage oil palm consumption because it is not healthy due to high cholesterol content. The same goes for our timber products, they discourage the buying of our timber products because it is damaging the environment and had caused lost of habitat for many animal species. Of course we know this is their propaganda when in actual fact it is to protect their soy bean, corn and timber producers. However, due to our determined effort, we were able to counter this and grow our palm oil and timber industry.
With regard to petrol guzzling big cars, I am not sure whether Honda and Toyota fall into this category and yet they are imposed with high duty imports. Looking at honda’s website, a honda city in Peninsular Malaysia costs RM85k while in Labuan it cost RM58k, a difference of RM27k. Honda and Toyota have always said that their car engines are fuel economy efficient. Maybe Honda and Toyota car’s owners or the company’s engineers can comment on this.
With regard to high prices to control traffic jams, I think a more better way is to have a very efficient public transport system. Even with lots of cars, people know when to use their cars. For example in the morning, when people go to work, they know there will be traffic jams and therefore decide not to bring their cars into the city and instead use public transport. Although price cars are high, there is still traffic jams. Therefore, does the high prices is meeting its objectives of reducing jams?
Anyway, with high car prices, then it would seem cars are meant for the rich. What about the middle income and the poor group? With cheap cars all Malaysian could feel the joy of owning a car.
For Proton, they need to look back on their business model. Although currently the government’s effort to discourage petrol guzzling big cars and reduce traffic jams coincidentally puts them at an advantage over imported cars with lower prices, they need to look weather this business model is sustainable. In the 80s and 90s yes it is relevant. Now we have AFTA and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) pushing for member countries to reduce tariff imports to increase competition. If I am not mistaken, Thailand has even ask for compensation from Malaysia if Malaysia does not reduce tariff imports for imported cars. Proton cannot always rely on the local market. They need to be strong such that even without duty imports on imported cars they can still survive. They need to be able to expand into internationally markets. I know it not an easy task, but this is the direction Proton has to take. There are no other options.
However, looking at the bigger picture, I think Proton should be retained due to the positive affects Tun has mentioned. That is why I am giving my advise and opinion.
I do hope Proton will succeed. All the best!
Dear YAB Tun salam mesra harap sihat sejahtera. Kiriman saya untuk tajuk dekat dihati penaung jauh dimata orang dgn izin….
…………PROTON ACCOLADES
> Profitability. It is amazing that a protected company (market and price) loses money in the first place.
> Engineers. I hope they are not the same engineers sent to Misubishi Japan, Citroen France. Obviously they learnt nothing then.
> Engineering. We need not send our people to Italy to learn designs or buy Lotus for production. They would come to our country lock stock and barrel (FDI, engineering, jobs) if we looked at Thailand.
> Investment return. Since when is tax considered an investment return (18bil revenue)?
………….LIMPAH NIKMAT
The people who benefited are Proton staff, patrons and their cronies. The people who paid thru their noses are 27mil rakyat. Eighteen bil could be used to subsidize public transport but was wasted on mega projects, bailing out cronies, nationalizing losses, spawning Zakaria’s and Ahmad Is…. etc.
Increased sales volume should bring prices down, but was propped up artificially (via protectionism).
………….TELUR SE BIJI
We are crowing over one plant (200k ut) and 300000 related jobs. Look at Thailand which has more than 5 world class plants ( 1.4 mil ut of Toyota, Nissan, Honda, GM, Isuzu). It exports twice more than what Proton sells the whole year in M’sia. Calculate the FDI, job and engineering value vs Proton.
Proton can be a proud domestic champion, but M’sia lost horribly in the Asian market. We should be exporting to Asia like Thailand is doing now. In fact many Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, GM models in M’sia now come from Thailand or Indonesia not Japan or US.
Asian parts component manufacturing is now centred in Detroit of Asia not the jungle fringe of Tanjung Malim. Our Asean neighbours buy from Thailand but not from M’sia which has only Proton parts.
Proton is one example what supremacist attitude and misplaced pride will do to our industry in the global arena. Penny wise pound foolish! Megah dgn keris maut akibat peluru! M’sia putih mata, rakyat putih tulang membela Proton.
……………FIVE BIL SAVINGS?
At that volume the car would be manufactured locally by local engineers via local plants (eg Thailand). Foolish to ship 200K ut cars from so far! Why did Sony build a plant in M’sia?
Misleading attempt to hoodwink some simpleton readers. There is no five bil savings in exchange outflow (without national car policy) but there is five bil losses, wastage and lost exports in protecting Proton.
……………AFTERTHOUGHT
High cars prices to prevent M’sians from buying petrol guzzling cars is an afterthought to defend Proton. Many foreign cars far more economical than Proton are not allowed to be sold cheaply.
TDM. I admire your “conviction”. Things that you like you will say good even if its bad, but things that you do not like you will say bad even if its good.
salam tun & keluarga,
terima kasih atas semua usaha-usaha tun kepada kami rakyat Malaysia. Saya amat bersetuju atas komen tun mengenai prestasi Proton, kereta Malaysia yang membanggakan semua.
Terima kasih buat selama- lamanya, Tun
Tun Yang Dihormati,
Apart from India and United Kingdom, Malaysia is the only other commonwealth country that design and produce motor vehicles under its our own brand. This is definitely something for Malaysians to be proud of!

Salam TUN,
Jangan lupa pada CEO Proton sekarang..saya fikir dibawah pengurusan beliau PROTOn berada pada kedudukan sekarang.
Well i think , car price in Malaysia is ridiulously high, especially Toyota and Honda because the government want to protect Proton. This is something we not proud of to live and be Malaysian. But fortunately the price of other foreign brand good such as computer is reasonable and affordable, but if the government want to venture in computer business then we might buy Dell Laptop or Compaq of low specs at RM12,000.00.
In our lifetime , we Malaysian will not be able to use foreign brand car with reasonable price if proton still around, i say lets lift up the protection and let sell foreign brand car at global market price.
I know toyota car is affordable in Indonesia and Thailand for certain income group. In Malaysia Toyota Vios is been considered luxurious item , which is rubbish. In Indonesia Vios is been used as Taxi.
Don’t deprive me and other Malaysian in our lifetime to own foreign brand car which we know of good quality with reasonable price as sold in the global market.
You cannot deprive Malaysian of good quality product and force Malaysian to buy low quality product just to protect Proton. We live only once, hence in our lifetime it is our dream to own new BMW 3 Series at current Waja Price.
Dear Tun,
In principal, I have always agreed that the national car project was a sound idea.
However, like any good idea, all is nought in the absence of good execution.
Whilst I also agree that Proton has definitely improved under it’s current stewardship, I’d just like to share a few thoughts with you:
1. Why weren’t all the billions in profit garnered in Proton’s early days used to implement a comprehensive public transportation system/network?
2. Why can’t all Protons be outfitted to the minimum international safety standards?
3. Whilst I have no major qualms about the external design of current models, why is the plastic used inside substandard?
4. I realise points 3. & 4. have cost implications but am convinced these can be addressed.
5. Branding is crucial to the success of any product and I must say that I am miffed as to why the Proton Logo still looks like an amateur take of a popular cartoon. Proper research and debate must be furnished on even little details like this to ensure global appeal.
I am proud to be Malaysian and am a thorough patriot.
I am also proud that Malaysia is one of the few nations that has had the benefit of an exceptional leader as yourself during your tenure as PM.
Thus, I would be very interested to hear your views on the points/queries raised.
Thanks & warmest regards.

3.Doa agar kecemerlangan PROTON berulang kembali.
Tun,
Normally I’m very agree with all your statements, but this time I don’t agree at all with your statement number 11 and 12. It does not consistent and sound funny.
Furthermore, the traffic not getting any better.
Why is it so hard for government to upgrade and add more lines for our LRT? Like in Beijing, LRT is very cheap and efficient.
YABhg Tun’
Today circulations shown a splendid image of future proton car on display. My whole bunch of friends got excited with the new concept car displayed in france yesterday. Cant think that we are able to go that far of designing a hybrid ! It is not just the show…it is the continuous painstaking effort by our very own engineers and we should down to earth proud of them. Welcome back proton ! Salutation for people who dont believe we can do it in the first place…it proofed them wrong ! Damn wrong ! its about time for some good opposition MPs to turn back to the right humble beginning. It is not too late to accept the fact !
I got 4 cars….Proton Wira 1.6GLi, Volvo 850GLE, AUDI A4B5 Engine and BMW 318i Lifestyle. Out of all this car, I drove Proton to non important appointment. BMW for Golf, Volvo as Family car and AUDI as social activities. Just imagine how low class Proton car to me……You think about it.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
Yes, I fully agree that ‘people as a whole must benefit from Government expenditure’. I cant find say any words but full of praise for Proton successess.
But please do explain to this really troubling question : 80% of production of rubber comes from small-holders, but they could not buy shoes and books for their childen. Why is this happening?
And so is with the huge acres of land planted with oil palm. But, who really benefit the downstream activities? If we were to buy palm oil or minyak masak, then we will be pondering who were the owners of these industries? Obviously, it is not the Bumis.
This is of course not to mention the complaints made by the Felda settlers, such as, the grading of palm fruits, the amount of price cuts and so on, including the question of not providing the Felda families with jobs. Giving lands, the increase of land price and houses, is not that beneficial compared to jobs in the area.
Obviously there are views that the government is taking advantage from the uneducated lots; or they even say that it is an Malaysian way of ‘culture system’ during the Dutch colonisation of Indonesia.

Tun, I saw you beside the Emas in The Star newspaper today. The vehicle looks fantastic. Congratulations!
I have no comment about Proton but I am proud of it. A friend of mine, a multi-millionaire said Wira is a good car when I told him i have one. I still wonder why he said that. Maybe he is proud of Proton, like me, because we are Malaysians!
salam Tun,
Wow!The unveiling of the concept cars made me proud knowing that we will be capable of producing hybrid cars in two years time.
Now we wait and see while the devious detractors try to conjure up reasons to further condemn Proton. These people are green with ENVY,one of the seven deadly sins.Motivated by racial reasons perhaps?
Do they realise that Tun is proving them wrong at every turn?
We laugh at their herculean efforts to degrade Tun’s achievements in particular and the Malays in general.

Dear Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,
Assalamu Alaikum,
At the outset, please allow me to disclose that I am your biggest fan and a regular visitor at your blog ever since Tun started this blog. In fact, Tun is my ideal since I was hearing about Tun in mid-eighties on BBC Urdu News on Radio (there was no television at our place those days).
I am a 37yrs old Muslim male from Ahmedabad (Gujarat-India). I came to Malaysia in 2001 and got married with a Malaysian girl (keturunaan Pakistan). And Alhamdulillah, we so far have 4 kids (2boys+2girls) aged 8, 7, 3 and 1 respectively.
As per malaysian laws, I did apply for my PR (permit masuk) in 2006 (after 5yrs from marriage). However, as per normal norms, the Jabatan Imigresen rejected my PR application. So I did a Permohonan Rayuan Permit Masuk at KDN in 2006.
But, to my shocking dismay, I recently received a letter from KDN [Ruj. KDN: (S) W100/981-37859 (5)], saying that “rayuan tuan adalah ditolak”.
I don
Yep, gogogo my national car. Why people compare our own local brand with those of Indon’s and Thais? Their’s arent even their own, they only do assembly for foreign brands. Their money flowing out like waterfalls to the foreign countries.
With my HARD-EARNED money, I only wish that it is being spent to help develope our country, put aside quality issues/overpriced Protons and so on. I even dont prefer Perodua/Naza due to foreign shares in it.
Do not get caught by inferiority complex that is haunting our nation due to agendas of the British by erasing/editing our history… CAN YOU NOT FEEL A LITTLE PROUD WHEN ONLY FEW OF THE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD ARE CAR MAKERS?
Korean get to where they are by supporting their own proud brand, believe it or not, their brands started as low as Proton.
Y.A.Bhg. Tun
We may in conflicts on numerous domestics issues but all parties must be united in facing the global issues.Every citizen of Malaysia must take pride in the success of Proton and all political parties must put aside their differences in giving a total support to Proton for the national car maker to more forward aggressively and be competitive in the global market. We have to sacrifice many things for the future generation. The success of Proton is dependent on our support on the domestic market and the company has to penetrate the global market to achieve the economies of scale. We have heard the success of South Korea as a nation in transforming their economy to industrialization within a very relatively short period of time.In the early sixties, South Korean people were struggling to reform their economy and economically, the South Korea was very much behind Malaysia. Now, South Korea already a developed nation as compared to Malaysia who only has the vision to achieve the same status by the 2020.I am wondering whether we can achieve this vision with the present political turmoil in country. The opposition parties are not contributing anything to the efforts of achieving the stated vision. Every effort of the Government is being ridiculed and negatively debated. Paling menjijikan apabila imej negara di burokan diluar negara sehingga keperingkat mendapatkan campur tangan ahli Parlimen Australia dalam kes mahkamah di Malaysia.
Rahim.
Dear YAB Tun Dr Mahathir,
I think this whole MV Augusta question can be understood easily by considering this question : Was MV Augusta under bankruptcy protection the moment Proton decided to inject RM 300 million to buy its shares? Yes or No.

Is it good?
Good morning Ayahanda Tun,
It’s good to know that Proton’s progress is on the right track with right attitude and management to achieve her vision and may be remembered that one of the objectives of Malaysia going into the automotive industry was to develop Malaysia’s engineering capability as stipulated in our National 5th objectives – “membina satu masyarakat progresif yang menggunakan sains dan teknologi moden”. However, the ban of PPSMI will only delay this National 5th objective. It’s a relief too to know that a ‘no’ to Sex Education as reported by The Star. Sex is intimate and personal in Malaysia due to multi-racial conflicts, tradition, culture, progress and development, hence, it will be better off we leave this to the parents whom can be the best teacher, leturer, mentor and friend to their children.
National market monopoly and national politics might be the factors that almost bankrupt Proton. I sincerely hope that Malaysia’s Proton may be able to stand on her own without government’s subsidies and protection.
Since the new concept of a car can be eco-friendly as electric or hybrid, it will be good if our Government starts looking into the Sceneric Bridge now.
Our PM Najib said yesterday, Government cannot cancel a contract without any reasons. And the reason for cancelling the project of Sceneric Bridge by Pak Lah was because this project of infrastructure will make Government poor as per full explainantion by our blogger Wenger J Khairy’s comments?
Nevertheless, time has come and our Government should look into the Sceneric Bridge Project to re-connect MALAY-SIA….

Salam kasih dan salam hormat Ayahanda Tun.
I believe that Tun is a very sporting and accommodating man. Even at a time when he commanded this blessed country of ours as Prime Minister, if you have a really good idea and wish to share it with him
ASSALAMUALAIKUM TUN,
Bagi saya work hard & smart 1st then when have more income why not I remain with Proton Car or new Proton car & same time buy another car from other company. So, at least I’m still support proton.
How good their “public Transport” terlalu jauh jika dibandingkan dgn “public transport” di Malaysia terutamanya Kuala Lumpur sebab saya pernah tinggal di KL hampir 8 tahun.
OK Tun…, sekali sekala “menulis” memang dah lupa pukul berapa…..wassalam
“Whether there is Proton or not Malaysians will pay a high price for their cars. Cheap cars will lead to even worse jams than now.”
To the rich, cars are status symbols and not just four wheels with an engine that can move you around. As such, they don’t want cheap cars. Are you saying that you are discouraging poor people from owning even a Kancil? My goodness!
Assalamualaikum,
Aduhai~
Ya proton berjaya. Kalau nak dikatakan mampu milik percayalah tak termampu nak beli.
Allahualam.
Dear Tun,
The “marvelous” 25 years low quality complaints will speak for itself. There’s no need for me to elaborate even more. In fact, 2 words will actually conclude everything about Proton; p-o-w-e-r w-i-n-d-o-w.
Thank you for reading.
Good Day to you Tun,
Although I am happy at the ability of our local engineers to pair up with their foreign conterparts, i hope that a real transfer of technology is taking place. Else it would be a cause for concern. These engineers should be made to practice what they have learned and adopt new ideas to the proton cars which is in dire need of a new design. Case in point, ever since the wira was lauched, which i think was sometime in the early nineties, how much has the design of the car evolved? Same goes for the Waja. Proton has marketed themselves to target those who are just entering the workforce. As time goes by, and once they are more affluent, do you honestly think they will buy a proton as an upgrade? A more logical option would be to purchase a Honda, Toyata or even a KIA. This, apart from being a more sound and viable purchase in terms of car performance and looks, it is to compliment their lifestyle. So why can’t proton get a piece of that pie? The answer is simple. Proton is still in its comfort zone. Well until, this mindset is changed, sad to say the quality of the proton cars will remain the same and it would not be able to compete with the Japanese cars. Even KIA has produced a stunning design with the new Forte. So perhaps, these engineers who are now working on foreign soil with reputable designers should put be put to the test sometime soon and reengineer proton. Because if they do, then I will be the first in line to purchase a new model.
Wish you the best of health Tun.
Assalammualaikum Tun and all,
I was bumped with this news article on a friend’s wall post in facebook. It seems like we are having a technical glitch with the tyre and aerodynamicism of our Lotus T127. To my comprehension, don’t expect too much for something that we are still new at it. However, we MUST to progress expeditiously. It also seems to me, that to being left about 5 seconds behind, it means that, in F1, we are probably lagged about 7 years behind.
This is the article that I meant; —> http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=358959&FS=F1
I highly hope that our engineers are also capable to encounter the problems very soon.
Terima kasih Tun.

Proton has killed so many Malaysians with their unsafe cars, because they are forced to buy nothing but protons for 20 years.
To say that it needed 200 changes before it can be deemed safe to be exported showed that Mahathir thinks Malaysian lives are cheaper than those of the west, money takes precedence. If 200 changes are made, why not adapt to benefit Malaysians as well, instead of sending them to die?
You lived to a ripe old age of 80++ but many die young in their 20s and 30s. The silly kancil too should be blamed as well.
Look at Toyota and now GM. They are held liable and subject to multi million dollars law suits because of their car accidents. Do you allow law suits against the ‘deadly’ protons?
Assalamualaikum wbt Yg Bhg Tun, Malaysian 4th Prime Minister,
Today is 16 Rabiul Awal 1431 Hijrah 850pm here in Malaysia (2/3/2010).
You are in Geneva today launching the concept car of Proton Emas.
Well, Yg Bhg Tun back in december 1992 I was in Zurich to visit Coutts & Co and later to St Moritz.
Travelling by train for 5 hours from Zurich, you will reach St Moritz, the everyday is holiday small town full of houses coverted into a mini hotel to accomodate budget travellers like me to this well known ski resort holiday location. I guess Yg Bhg Tun would choose to stay in the Palace Hotel there where the minimum rate was at least 13,000 Swiss Franc per night back then in 1992.
Well again, Yg Bhg Tun why my Muqaddimah is about Switzerland is because back then in december 1992 a copy of the IHT that i purchased in St Moritz has also published news about the Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin statement and of course yours goes as well without having to mention la Yg Bhg Tun and Malaysian economy back then.
In one of the biggest ski equipment for rental/sale outlet, I got so suprise to know that it was owned and operated by a chinese(Hokkien) from Penang. Well, he spoke to me in BM and it was like a reunion of Malaysians la back then Yg Bhg Tun.
The ski area and mountain looks so nice and he told me that Yg Bhg Tun Daim owned one of the exclusive bungalow there. (well I assume it is true la Yg Bhg Tun and it is good to know that wealthy Malaysian has owned property in the place fits only for the global rich and famous).
Well, back to your current posting of Proton progress. Yg Bhg Tun you might not be as happy as now if the previous PM is still in power. Alhamdullillah, Proton has made progress but bear in mind that to ensure that your legacy is safe and sound, only your skillful political manouvering will ensure that for otherwise a repeat false promise when handing over power in 2003 will be repeated once more or twice more or even thrice more etc etc. InsyaAllah, you know best on how to handle it.
I talked about Proton as Timbalan Penghulu in the BTN camp meant for postgraduate students going to UK in 1995 at Kem Sungai Chermai Kuala Pilah Negeri Sembilan. I told the participants quoting your own words those days as the PM that when you have make a decision you expect it to be implemented be it right or wrong, thus the result even despite getting opposition from your own cabinet members, you proceeded with the proton project and it was a proven success when you started driving the proton at the Penang bridge back then. Well, talking at the rostrum was not easy , it did require some research but it was worth it as it was a BTN camp and perhaps a mini Ibadah Camp too as well as it incorporated the compulsory attendance of Solat & Kuliah Subuh in the small camp near the jungle of Kem Sungai Chermai Kuala Pilah NS while many were seeing snoring during the Kuliah Subuh. Those were the days my friends……
InsyaAllah, your plan as the adviser of proton will materialize with the re appointment of your original blue eye boy (man now la Tun) for proton as the Proton Chairman. Looking forwards and moving forwards, a billion euro question is how to preserve your legacy.
Well Yg Bhg Tun enjoy your day there in Geneva and Salam Solat Qasar/Jamak Zohor & Asar there today . Wassalam wbt

Excellent government policy under PM Najib. So gladful about it.
I am quite happy with Proton progress lately. The exterior car design is very good. Examples are Persona and Gen-2. I can say, the design has met people expectation. The ride handling is very good – thanks to Lotus.
Now new CAMPRO Turbo is just around the corner, hopefully it will be a great success and further enhance performance of Proton’s cars.
However, Proton need to further improve interior design. When 2 brittle or hard materials such as PVC connected together, it will create some rattling sound after sometimes. It should be alternately connected between hard and soft material, so that the soft material can absorb the noise. Cannot wait to see this improvement, because latest proton cars such as Exora and Persona still not equipted with these materials.
Maaf Tun, pada saya Proton kena ambil lagi ramai quality engineer. sebab quality engineer sekarang ialah pengguna sendiri.
Asyik2 rosak asyik2 rosak. Mahal pulak spare part.
tapi kot mana pun saya respek kat Tun.
Hi Tun,
I like your post.
For those who says Proton is expensive and all, though!, Work harder. Do not write a negative things when you cannot afford to buy one.
See thru a bigger hole, because of Proton, our economy is better as more people get paid, thus You Fools can have jobs. Do not compare us with Thailand and Indonesia only on this, why you didn’t compare on why so many poor people begging and sleeping under the bridge in Thailand and Indonesia??
I say, Proton is having good progress in only 25 years. Japan need almost about the same time for them to produce a drivable cars.
salam tun
Cube Tun kira, PTPTN yg saya kena bayar RM 100 sebulan, Sewa rumah RM 150, Duit untuk ibu bapa RM 200, duit makan RM 500, Duit minyak pergi keje RM 200, duit telefon RM 50, kalau saya beli persona byrn bulanan dalam RM 500..tinggal lah 300 tun..mcmane saya nk simpan duit..tu belum duit untuk insuran saya..da byk lg selingan yang saya pun xtau..tu saya yg bergaji RM 2000..mcmane ngan operator yg gaji cume RM 700..sebenanye tu yg rakyat marah tun..saya masih di kira beruntung sbb gaji saya RM 2000..tu pun masih xmampu nk beli kereta..cume pakai kereta kancil buruk yg asik rosak..taraf hidup da tinggi tun, harga barang sume mahal, bukan kereta jer..sume harga barang mahal tun skarang..mcm2 tax kena..tp gaji tetap kecil..saya xtau mcmane operator saya yg bekerja bawah saya..apalah yg diorg mkn dgn gaji 700..ada ank 2 3 org..ish saya mmg xleh pk la.. kalau brg mahal, kereta mahal tp gaji besar x jd beban tun..ni brg mahal tp gaji ciput je..mcmane la jenayah nk kurang ble org nk mkn pun xde duit..skarng sume berpunca dari pendapatan..saya rase persona harga 100ribu pun org x bising kalau gaji yg dapat mampu milik..tp nk beli motor kapcai pun kena fikir 3 4 kali..yg kaya mmg xkan tau kesusahan org kat bawah tun, tp org kat bawah merana sapa yg nk ambil berat tun..sy tau komen saya ni xkan memberi apa2 perubahan, tp saya rase bole melegakan perasaan org yg berpendapatan rendah yg membacanye..negara makin maju tp rakyat makin susah..saya harap tun paham dan bole memperjuangkan nasib rakyat yg kesempitan..xguna lg nk berpolitik pasal pembangkang ke, pasal pak lah ke, memperjuang kan kesamaan untuk rakyat lg penting saya rase.. tun bole contact saya dgn email saya..rakyat yg susah yg penting tun skarang..negara dah maju da..dia akan terus maju dgn sendirinye bila rakyat kita xsusah lg..sekian tun..semoga tun terus sihat..saya sayang kat TUN,
proton would progress more if there is less “political factor” in proton’s organization. Proton shold have a better planner especially on the product range, pricing, project development & internal investment. If Proton uses this blog as a booster on the investors confidence, then mr. T says “i pity the fool”.
Salam Tun yang di hormati,
1. Kebanyakan negara membangun menjadikan industri permotoran sebagai salah satu nadi penggerak ekonomi mereka.
2. Amerika Syarikat berbangga dengan kereta GM, Ford dan Crysler; German dengan Mercedes Benze dan BMW; Britain dengan Bentley, Roll-R dan Jaguar; Perancis dengan Citroen ;Jepun dengan Toyota, Honda dan Nissan, Korea Selatan dengan Hyundai dan Kia; maka Malaysia dengan Proton, Perodua dan Naza.

2. Yeah, where did the RM 18 billion go. Did it go for an affordable and efficient public transport!
Hey Stewie,
You are trying so hard to be smart and wrote so foolishly by being sacastic with Tun’s writing. It is good to be critical but dont make a false allegeation for the things that you yourself do not know or not even sure.
You have to understand when people of Tun’s caliber, they have an excess and privileges to information that we the normal people dont. When Tun discovered that some smart Malaysian citizen sold MV Agusta for RM 4 to Gevi Spa, I remember that time mostly said MV Agusta was a burden to Proton, its share dropped so much and etc and justify the RM 4 decision. Finally we also knew that MV Augusta was sold to Harley for EU100 million and its another sub brand to BMW for another EU100 million. Now we know that Tun’s opposition of selling is true but it is too late. Do we blame ourselves for condoning the ‘Robbers’ action? No right?? We just move on and pretend it was nothing to do with us. Not Taxpayer money. It is Proton’s money and it’s problem. Why??? people even how stupid they are, try to act smart or worse they become parrot- talk only but not understand.
Even I dont have any Proton in my garage, I love Proton. I love them to be better, cheaper to own, better engineering, better safety feature and a much better car as a whole.
Being a consumer, I have a choice to make which better suit me most. I own 1 Mercedes, 1 Datsun Fairlady, 1 Ford, 1 Suzuki and Citroen all I bought 2nd hand. For example my Merc E230 year 1997 I bought for RM 48,000 few days back. Why dont I buy Proton? Because Merc is a better car all round while I can get new Proton but it cant give the quality and prestige of Merc. I have a choice to make here. Yes , it was a wise choice because I bought it under market value and I feel ” rich”.
Again, did my act not patriotic? Selling and buying car has nothing to do with patriotism, it is just business what is the best choice to make with limited amount of money. To Proton, good luck!!!

Salam Tun,
Saya syukur kerana Tun ada pelbagai wawasan yg bagus utk Malaysia.Saya rasa Proton boleh bertambah maju jika isu2 remeh seperti power window dll diberi perhatian lebih.Prestasi enjin, handling & durability model2 baru mmg bagus utk class yang sama.Semoga satu hari Proton akan mengeluarkan kereta seperti Honda & Toyota.Insyaallah.Honda mula tahun 1948.Proton 1983.Sikit lagi samalah.
To Stewie,if you are a Malaysian you should respect an elder statesman.Disregard your personal opinion on the person during commenting on an issue.I guess noblesse oblige is something u need to wiki on.Is this how u speak to ur grandparents & parents?Adab sopan santun bila bercakap tak belajar dekat sekolah ke?Saya pasti cikgu SRJK/SRK pun ajar murid2 kecil sopan santun waktu pendidikan moral.
Malaysia do not have infinite fund and its the Government’s policy not to borrow heavily for any reason. We cannot be building LRT/monorail/trains to service the whole nation at one go.It must be done in phases.
Did the Government force anyone to stay in a relatively new area without train services?Look at all old township in KL.The public transport is there to see.
Halt the bollocks talk as if only in Malaysia traffic jams are bad.Im working in Europe so I can definitely say every morning and evening the traffic congestion in all major cities are more less same to Malaysia.Cikgu kat sekolah ajar kamu menipu jugak ke?Kalau ye pun marah present ur comment in a better written manner la kawan.Facts not lies and assumptions based on ur figure of imaginations. There is no ideal cities w/o traffic jams in this world.
Im a Penyokong buatan Malaysia bukan skeptical unpatriotic backward Malaysian!
-Majulah Malaysia-
Dear Tun Dr M.
When the 1st model of the Proton cars were launched in the middle of 80s many skeptical Malaysians came up with unfounded serious complaints about the car. Since the car was then cheapest in Malaysian car market, many bought the car reluctantly as it fits their budget. Eventually, after using the car for some time, they were relieved of the fear of driving Proton. They felt that Proton cars are really value for money.
Of course you can’t get the comfort and the competency of a Mercedes Benz in a Proton car. During the past 35 year Proton had come up with a variety of models. Nearly all had good demand in the local market except for the failed models such as Proton Putra, Proton Limousine and Proton Campro.
If at all there is one car which is cheap, value for money and very few (minor) complaint, it must be the Proton Saga. You could still see a lot of those cars running on the road safely and comfortably.
However, we just can’t be proud of Proton because it is doing extremely well in the local scene. We must also look at its marketability and acceptance outside Malaysia (This effort seem to have died down lately). The most practical and potential market we should venture into is the ASEAN market. If the features, price and the marketing of Proton Models in Asean is right, there should not be any difficulty in marketing Proton models in those countries (where the major marketing factor would be value for money.
Assalamualaikum Tun dan Keluarga,
When I saw your photo few weeks ago with The Proton Mr.Nice look a like , I said to my staff that Tun will be writing a very good comments about PROTON soon. Now we have it.Dear Tun as I mentioned it earlier,Pihak Proton hanya akan menunjukan perkembangan mereka di tahap UP STREAM saja kepada TUN , tetapi jika di lihat kepada perkembangan mereka DOWN STREAM adalah amat tidak memuaskan di mana yang akan menerimanya adalah pihak pengguna . Rakyat Malaysia juga yang terpaksa menanggung nya.Wassalam Tun.
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah dan salam sejahtera,
Salam hormat Ayahanda Tun Mahathir,
(Rujuk: By gunse007 on March 2, 2010 10:34 AM
if u have set up automobile industry similar to thailand, malaysia wud have been different….
your proton produce junk cars, quality ones are expensive and over protected…..)
Kata kami,
gunse007,
If only you know how to be smart.
Again, GROW UP!!!
gunse007,
Do you want to go to Thailand?
I repeat, ‘Thai’ land.
do you?
poor gunse007,
Do you understand ‘perseverance’?
‘or’
do you understand A,B,C,D,E,F,G….
‘and’,
do you understand from A.. to F..?
do you understand from A1.. to F1..?
Grow Up!,
Yes, Up! Up! Up!
Grow Up gunse007! Grow Up!
Yes, Proton-Lotus coming up with F1 car…..others like Honda, Jourdan are pulling out…what is the rationale behind this….!
At home Proton was the number one seller at one time……due to protections from the government…..in later years the government surely cannot protect Proton anymore……open markets….
I have owned a few Protons…from Saga Magma, Saga Megavalves, Savvy and Satria Neo…all of them only good up to third month, since then problems……here and there, I still keep the Savvy and Satria Neo….no buyers or get too low price for them…..both Savvy and Satria having squeaky front brakes…..till to date cannot be solved by Proton Service!
Proton should…… whatever accessories provided to the UK to be available in local market….what is so special about the UK?….and we are subsiding them……Malaysian tax payers!
I would suggest Proton to open markets and set up plants in Africa and other SE Asian countries where the cars can be produces there, start producing left hand drives for those markets…..!
Most of big players in this industries have join together or close down……Proton should find a good foreign partner to provide good support……or will face closure in the future……lots of jobs will be affected!
Salam hormat Tun Mahathir
salam…
ye la tu Tun..Progress Proton tu memang bagus sejak kebelakangan nie..tu tk bleh la dinafikan…syabas proton..
tapikan Tun…proton tu makin ok lepas Tun merajuk yg si TM tu disingkirkan…Tun pulang semua kete proton…merajuk org da lanjut usia memang cam tu kan..hehehe
6 tahun Tun takde sibuk² kt Proton …makin maju company nie…tetiba skarg sape ntah yg jemput Tun jeguk² kt Proton?….mcm risau jek tgk caraya nie…harap² Tun tk rosakkan rancangan DSZ nk majukan Proton tu ehh…kekadang kejuruteraan tk sama ngan politik …jd tkyah la Tun sibuk² sgt…bosan da ngan Tun…tk semua bende kite bleh politikan…mostly engeneering…salah tetap salah!
Dear Tun,
Thank you for the update. I am glad with the news.
1. The selling of MV Augusta was a mischief. The fact that BMW and Harley Davidson paid huge sums of money proved MV Agusta was worth much higher than 1 Euro.
2. No major improvement made to MV Agusta between 2005 and 2007. What the Italian dullard did was just re-financing the company.
3. In spite of the bike market slow down, the Husqvarna is generating revenue. On the other hand, Harley Davidson is planning to sell MV Agusta. Let us see how much it is selling for.
4. The disposal of MV Agusta, if it was even necessary, should not be done precipitously. Proper exercise like tendering should have been done to reflect the integrity of a government linked company.
Wow! An Exora Turbo! Must be a blast to drive.
Malaysians are eagerly waiting for the introduction of hybrid Proton which could be sold at a cheaper price compared to current hybrids being sold in Malaysia such as the Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius. If the majority of cars in Malaysia have hybrid drivetrain, then we would reduce the consumption of fuel and at the same time cut emission from cars.
Proton proves that Malaysian is just as good as any Europeans or even the Japanese in designing and building cars. I think it is time for Malaysia to venture into shipbuilding and aircraft industry in a big way. I know we can do it!
Malaysia Boleh!
Assalamualaikum ..
Dear Tun
I saw the news featuring you on TV sitting in the cockpit of the lotus design racing car. Quite impressive but I beg to differ on what you have written above
(1) Success of a company should not be based on “spending money” and painting of a good picture but rather profitability. Record shows that almost all proton subsidiaries is losing money.
(2) In terms of new products, it is good that proton is looking into a hybrid products and its participation in Geneva Motor show. It will give proton some publicity. I am not sure whether it has any significant marketing mileage though.
(3) I would like propose to you and ask Proton to be the first mover in the market of “personal mobility” Typically all major cities in the world is suffering from traffic congestion and impact of increasing oil price. In reality if we look at our own roads, there is an average of 1 person per car on the road at peak hours.
(4) In Malaysia, public transport is far from satisfactory in terms of accesibility and level of service. This cause people to drive.
(5) We should be looking at developing a small 2 person vehicle (3 tyres) which provide all whether protection.
Design must be compact enough and operates on a small engine of about 250cc. Honda (3R-C) and other major players are already into this segment but their products are pricey. Proton should take this first mover advantage.
It must be price competitive and at the same time looks desirable enough for people to buy. Can you look into it. It will help to ease traffic congestion and improve air quality. Thank you.
My first car (2000) – Kancil 850
2nd car (2002) – Wira AB 1.5 Auto
Current Car (2006) – Perdana V6
I support local cars. No problems on these cars especially my beloved Perdana.
My advice:
1.Follow the maintenance and parts replacements schedule.
2.Do not make any modifications.
3.Use original parts
4.Do not drive like kacang hantu
Yes proton indeed improved over the 25 years but with govt. grants and proctection they should be further ahead ! Proton has created many jobs for the ppl and opened up chances for many vendors but are they world class ? I doubt it. The car prices here in Msia is a joke !The price we pay for a waja can get us a decent continental car in other country! We are paying through our nose to drive a decent car becoz of all the taxes and excise duties on foreign cars ! Why ? Becoz without it Proton will not survive !I agreed in the beginning we have to protect Proton, but after 25 years ! They still need those protection and they have not improve much in term of quality and design of their cars ! How much longer do they need to walk without those crutches ?
Tun give them a time frame or find a partner that can help them do it. We cannot go on forever carrying this “baby” till it 30’s ! If Proton can match the japanese and even the Koreans in term of safety and design we will be very proud of them.
Buying Proton doesnt show you are more patriotic but you have no choice without paying through your nose, get it ?
you said “The two foreign drivers, Jarno Trulli and Hekki Kovalainen, were very experienced. Fairuz Fauzi our Malaysian driver was the first to test-drive the car in Spain. I hope he would get a chance to drive in the actual race. I wish them the best of luck.”
fairuz maybe good for other races but not F1. You will be lucky if these 2 mat salleh drivers drive well to avoid last 3 places from circuit after circuit for the next 10 yrs.
lotus is build by europeans not malaysians. even though you put up few engineers there to help them out.
i have no doubt with malaysian engineers capability. i myself work overseas bring in foreign exchange into malaysia for the past 5 yrs unlike the politicians who bring out money to buy property in australia and UK…
but when u bring quota system to lotus, you will corrupt the team.
you said “I was pleasantly surprised that by the time I arrived on February 22, not only could I sit in the racer and start the engine but the car itself had been undergoing trial races in Spain.
SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG

Maybe it could be because of the jet lag from having ( probably from Malaysian Tax money i.e Proton or PETRONAS sponsored trip) , but your justification to have Proton is rather amusing and incoherent .

THIS DISRESPECT AND UNGRATE-FOOL WITH A ‘ABI’ AND ‘DUMB’ MENTALITY

YBhg Tun:
Lotus is a company owned by Malaysian and being a race car shouldering the image of the nation, perhaps the Malaysian color theme ought to be more prominent on the car.
to have malaysia inject capital for this F1 is sheer arrogance and stupidity of all those approved and support lotus to race.
After reading your posting Tun, I only have to say SYABAS to Proton for their good work.
The technology transfer works in the automobile industry.
PROTON is 6 letters, please do pardon me for that oversight. One of those days I presume.
Salam Tun..
I never used others than PROTON since my first WIRA 1995 model. Every thing Ok..kecuali a few minor problem.
TAPI Tun…saya di kecewakan apabila my first 1000km EXORA free services …Kena tendang mcm bola…From there I know, proton is prepared to produce new car and new technology…BUT their Services Centre “hancuss”. They can even gave reason “Proton takdak hantar barang la (spare part)…lu hantar HQ la…itu hujung KESAS H/Way”. Kena la saya ambil cuti 1 hari for free servis and check absober EXORA yg berbunyi tu…
Proton will not recall ther car. like TOYOTA…betul tak Tun? So, service after sales amat-amat penting for me (and for all proton users)…baru ada class…kalu asyik nak jaga LOTUS jer, wat ape…itu produk MAT SALEH la…
Dear Tun and Readers,
There are some facts, a lot of “not so facts” (insinuations) and statistics. I will defer to the Tun’s noble readership whether they want to hear the truth.
If not, I will wish Tun a good day and, as always, best of luck to the citizens of this country, especially the 10 million workers who may or may not be part of the 300,000 workers.

Dear Tun,
Good to hear Proton is back on track, in fact the giant of the Big Threes are filing their bankrupcy (except for Ford).
You sincere comments will indeed enhancing the Proton’s brand. Those who read your blog will share to others. The multiplying effect is so great and it is good for Proton.
Proton Boleh! Good job!
Assalamualaikum Tun,
So far I bought 5 cars and non of it are Proton. With my income about RM 4,000 a month buying a new car with more than 5 years loan is never an option to me. Luckily my passion for modifying cars makes buying new car is the last thiing I will do.
All my cars price were below RM 30,000 when I bought it. My first car was Ford Tx3 which was my very first car which I loaned RM 27,800 and paid installment at RM 600/mth. I bought it after 1 year saving my money while I worked at Prudential Assurance with RM 1,800/mth basic salary.
With RM salary of RM 1600plus nett a month and paying RM 600/mth for car loan for 5 years plus fuel another RM 300/mth, I had a big hole in my pocket every month. I spent more than half my salary on car only.
Why I bought Ford Tx3 in the 1st place? Not a Proton? Actually I was considering to take Proton, a 6 year-old gold color sedan that time. However the 2nd hand Proton was more expensive than Ford Tx3 1.8. The Proton with 1.5cc, carburated was RM 36,000 compare with Ford TX3 1.8 and fuel injection at RM 31,800. After comparing the specs, it was wiser to buy Ford TX3. The 2nd hand Proton with lower specs was over-priced in the market. Buying the Ford was a very good decision for me as the Ford was exhilirating to drive then even now.
My others 3 cars are Citroen 2.0 ZX 2 doors CBU sport, equipped with immobiliser, airbag, disc brakes all round and ABS which I bought for RM 21,000 in 2005 is a superb car especially in corner. This Citroen was much cheaper, more body strength, more powerful than the nearest rival from Proton, Satria GTi and Putra which was price at RM 50,000 plus that time. My monthly installment for that Citroen was just RM 375 for 5 years and with my salary already more than 3,000 a mth, I can spent more on something else. Financial wise, I just spent 1/10 of my salary for that car and hell yeah… it was a good decision.
My other 2 cars are Suzuki Vitara I bought it RM 10,000 cash for my fancy in fishing in weekend and a Datsun 280ZX, an antic sport car for my passion in automotive history.
How can we make a local car cheaper? Malaysia should done better and Government must manage all our resources effectively and make our Ringgit stronger so that we can buy things cheaper.
In UK, BMW 318 cost only 17,000 pound. Imagine our Ringgit is stronger as Pound, RM 2,000/mth salary man can afford to buy BMW 318i… It is heaven. It is immposible now but it is possible then, who knows.
I am not saying we should buy a BMW if we Ringgit are stronger but why cant we implies the idea it to our local cars? Proton, Perodua, Naza, Inokom etc? I still remember the 1st Proton Saga was RM 15,000 new in 1984/85.
If the local made cars are cheaper, better and worth the money paid, I would say, my 1st ever brand new local made car will be in my dirty garage. I am such a kedekut guy but a wiser patriotic guy at the same time. I love Proton, I am patriotic and I love my money. Being a patriotic also come at certain price….
Salam Ayahanda Tun,

Dear Sir,
I could still remember when I was young and my father bought a Proton Saga.Everytime we drove the car,all eyes were on us as if we were driving a luxurious car.
After almost 30 years,it started to bear fruits.Joe the plumber will not be able to visualize this 30 years ago. I hope it would help young and bright engineers to grow. With pool of talent unleashed I am certain we will see some innovative ideas arise.
I do hope that we are going forward.Just look at China. We were ahead before but in no time, they are way ahead of us now.
P/S Still keeping my finger cross to ride a bullet train at home turf…
Dear Tun,
The down sindrome in denial Mr. Ir. Syahrizan would surely doesn’t like this post. It is believe that he probably have personal vendetta agaisnt Proton due to his past bad experienced with Proton. But, the facts that you have eloborated here clearly shown Proton is moving in the right direction to become world class car manufacturer. It probably sound too optimistic, but we need to be optimistic rather than pessimistic. Automotive engineering is a bechmark on how developt is that country. If the German, Japan, Korea, China and France really proud of their national car, we should therefore feel proud too with Proton.
It remind me of Volkwagen shares being bought over by Porche in order to prevent “a hostile foriegn take over”. This is because the German are really proud of their national car. Unlike, we in Malaysia especially Ir Syahrizan who think Proton is a burden to Malaysian especially to Ir Syahrizan, not for something that we can be proud of at all.
Maybe it could be because of the jet lag from having ( probably from Malaysian Tax money i.e Proton or PETRONAS sponsored trip) , but your justification to have Proton is rather amusing and incoherent .

Salam Tun,
Terima kasih Tun.

Dear Tun,
Yes. Proton has made much progress in it’s 25 years of existence. It has progressed very much, and has opened many employment oppurtunuities for it’s employees, and for it’s vendors.
Yes. I have to say that Proton could be better. There are times when I question Proton’s ability and quality, especially in small matters i.e. the finishing, power window, the squeaking. But overall, it makes good cars (I can testify to that as I’m driving a 13 year old Satria, and it still runs well), and most importantly, Proton is progressing forward (though I think they should progress faster)
It is however the attitude of most (not all) Malaysians themselves that will hinder the development of Proton. Its simple, when a Proton car stalled by the roadside, they’ll say “There you go. Proton cars. What a piece of crap they are. You don’t see many BMW’s or Merc’s breaking down” and his companion will nod in agreement and they’ll go on condemning Proton. Another example will be in designs. Say you put a Proton label on the new Vios, and you’ll get remarks like “Damn its ugly!” or “Bodoh! Designers Proton makan gaji buta ke!” But since its on a Toyota. You get remarks like “Ehhh…ok what. Unique design” or “Hey, it’s cute!” Yup…sure is cute. Putr a dugong beside a Vios, and you might mistake it for a very huge dugong.
It’s just impossible. Whenever its Proton, its bad. This attitude has to change. That is how Honda became what they are now. And that’s how Hyundai and Kia are beginning to make inroads today. Its because they have the support of their people.
quote:
—
1. If government discourage people to drive, where are the public transport facilities being developed? If you live in Kota Damansara, Puchong and other newly developed areas, in the past ten years if you don’t drive you can only stay home.
2. Why can we at least make Proton cars more quality and lesser problems out of the factory since we (the rakyat) are paying more expensive car than it should be?
3. What is the point when Proton have so many achievement in the foreign country but our local production cars still in not acceptable quality? Since Lotus owned by Malaysian entities and we still can’t buy Lotus at the affordable price?
Tun, we all know Proton is your achievement and we are so proud that you made it but the implementators (execution) of your vision is always swayed and people put their angers and blame on you. Get it?
Dear Tun,
1. Good to know that Proton’s now has respected you as their advisor. I am to believe that even your writings put credit to here & there, you must have planted your beautiful ideas to make Proton stand on where it is now.
2. Good also to know that some talented Malaysian engineer has participated to design or redesign all Proton newly cars.
3. My hope are Proton will continue to upgrade qualities of their car and stand high like the BMWs and Ferraris.
4. Take care Tun. I will always support Proton, dont worry.
my first car proton iswara and second car proton new saga. i have 2 proton. so i support proton. tq
if u have set up automobile industry similar to thailand, malaysia wud have been different….
cars in thailand and indonesia is way cheaper there than here…..
your proton produce junk cars, quality ones are expensive and over protected…..
u are the cause for the common ppl wasting money with car loans debts….
Salam Tun,
Since it was founded in 1983, Proton has indeed come a long way. It continues to provide employment opportunities to a great number of Malaysians.
Semoga Proton kekal maju.
That’s the way to go Proton, F1, Lotus. Viva Mahathir. Proton will roll out hybrid cars soon! Can we have more Petronas-Proton link-ups in developing frontier technologies and commercialization?
Ya, they have RM4 worth of brains, the side-burned bullfrog and the mastertoadlah.
For long term sustainability we must develop a maintenance culture which is now lacking. We like to remove and renew leaving little history left for generations to come to learn.
For long term sustainability we want leaderships with vision. The right vision that is.
The last time when I was with a research organisation (10 years ago), the leadership was harping on downsizing and not expanding in order to cater for the complex demands of food supply for the continously growing population. The leaderships’ written English was horrible and yet their dissertation was voluminous! They won’t allow us to publish in foreign journals.
Working in an another institution, the leadership (dean) is a Datuk professorship with a khalwat case! I hear a worse case at UNISEL. If these are the kind of leadership being promoted and maintained those in the higher echalons are not doing their job and should be removed. People can go but institutions must stay.
Malaysia wants to be self-sufficient in rice since mid-seventies and now by 2015. It is easy to proclaim such but what are the strategies and groundworks? Rice is not an easy crop to grow for from the minuscule to the beasts – virus, fungi, snails, birds, buffaloes, and climate – flood, drought, wind, pollution can lay a claim on the crop.
Malaysia is in dire need to establish a national rice research institute along the model of the successful Malaysian Palm Oil Board if we really care for the staple food of generations to come.
Assalamu Alaikum Tun,
Tun, all these success are empowered by your previous “Malaysia Boleh” policies. Now, Najib is pushing them further by introducing the 1Malaysia spirit.
“Malaysia Boleh!” 1Malaysia!
Assalamualaikum Tun,
I have to agree with you that with the emergence of Proton in Malaysia, it has done a lot of good things to the rakyat. In fact, through Proton, we could produce our own car which can compete with other brands such as Honda and Toyota to name a few. Lots of professionals and jobs have been created to help the Bumiputra’s which in a way, improve the standard of living and competitiveness in this globalisation world.
Again, being a middle income citizen, with just an average yearly income, I sincerely think that we also want some quality in,which i seriously think Proton needs to buckle up. True, even Toyota and Honda have their quality issues like the one they’re facing in the States, but honestly, in the last 25 years, have Proton live up to the standards? They’ve been slacking off, by producing, underpower and non fuel efficient cars.
Dear Tun, being the advisor of Proton, i beg you to advice them to improve things.True, we can’t ask for superb quality, but for an average income earners, paying the instalments already is killing us. How do you expect us to support the national brand if the power window also they can’t make it right?
I’m not againts Proton. I think in terms of design and handling, i bet it beats the average Japanese cars, hands down. But people will keep on complaining about quality issues. I hope Proton is looking at this very seriously. Please, with fuel prices will go up in the near futre, for god sake Proton, please produce fuel efficient cars instead of turbo engine or other nonsense. The average Malaysian don’t live in luxury house and drive flashy cars with Bling like the MD’s and other CEO’s. I believe you don’t drive yourself a Proton Waja CPS do you Tun? hehehe.
Anyway, it’s just my opinion. i’m sorry if i offended you. Hope to get your respond Sir. Assalamualaikum and take care Tun.
Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullah Dear Tun,
Alhamdulilah, we’re finally and once again back into the line/ the right track….I can’t help but to
appreciate this development since it would become another stepping stone for us into something
much greater…All I can say is…Thank you for all your visions, implementations and also all the hard
work that you’ve put in in order to ensure it’s success. May Allah s.w.t bless you with great health,
life and put you among His blessed servants thus grant us the great victory!
“Long live the Malays, Islam, and Malaysia”. Wassalam
PROTON-LOTUS DID IT!
This is it! The moment that we have been waiting for! The most enjoyable news and a fruitful writing from the great man of Malaysia, a very meaningful writing and thought that can touch people’s heart, make one feel very deep inside, to the deepest part of their heart.
The ancient Malays described this feeling as, ‘Sehingga Menusuk Ke Tulang Hitam’ (Touched to the deepest part of the black blood in the bone).
CONGRATULATIONS PROTON-LOTUS!
Yes, congratulations to everyone especially to Tun Dr.Mahathir who had created this dreams (IMPIAN), and now, the dreams had come true!
This is such a great news, such huge event to everyone.
Imagine, a bunch of ‘kampung boys’, somewhere September 1985, about 7-8 years of age kid who play a hand made wooden racing car toys with the PROTON name on it,
what would they feel now to see that this dream had come true?
Don’t you think that they will jump again like a kid again now?
of course, they surely will jump, but this time, they will jump at SEPANG F1 Circuit. Jump up sky high crying out loud PROTON name.
Indeed, they can’t afford to buy a real romote control racing car last time because they are poor, but, this time with the great help of Tun Mahathir last time, they can afford to buy a F1 Ticket in SEPANG! Yes. One of them is surely me.
SALUTE to PROTON-LOTUS F1 Team.
This is to prove that Tun Dr. Mahathir promises is a believeable promises. Achievable dreams.
The same dreams goes to ‘The Helicopter Story’ I once told to this court.
Soon, we are going to have our Helicopter! Belive it.
And yes, whats NEXT?
Thank you very much Tun Dr.Mahathir.
Not sure whether Tun can help urging Proton management, to have a look on the power window and the light?
Dear Tun,
Glad to see you again in the blog.
What you have seen in England and Italy (Malaysian top executives and engineers) basically are the result of seeds that you planted many many years ago. Indeed we Malaysian have every quality to fly high as high as European or Japanese. Only thing is need to increase the quantity of quality people with more widen education and training systems or whatever exposure that route to developing direction.
When talk about Proton; people talk about it’s quality. Still many do not trust Proton’s quality. This is fact;even it is bitter to write and read.
I still remember, back in 80’s Honda cars had the same reputation. Some even said Honda cars made of recycled Milo tins. Obviously, that is not logic at all; but what make people to say so? that should be the matter.
If the company already start making money again; I believe Dato Nazmi Salleh also already start taking steps to improve Proton car’s quality. A normal range of improvement will not help much to change current reputation. A drastic and concrete improvements are vital.
We Malaysian proud of Proton very much at least when see Singaporeans drive Proton cars. Only thing pls do not make cars like Tiara , Gen 2 and the previous MPV (I even can’t recall it’s name immediately).
Tun,
“14. At one stage there were rumours of an attempt to practically bankrupt Proton so as to sell it off cheaply. This was what happened to Agusta. Proton has assets which the buyers can develop profitably. But I am glad that these are just rumours and no one talks about it anymore. If a person looks at the whole picture he will appreciate that Proton is too valuable an asset to sell for RM4.”
1. We should tie these traitors on stakes, and burn them alive!
2. Its good to be alive today to be with you and other proud Malaysians to continue our journey in our quest of becoming a developed nation by 2020!
3. Obviously, there will be sceptics and traitors that would come out with all sorts of nonsense and cheap talks to rebut this piece today, which to me they would jolly well do so, as it would not bother me one bit, and I would continue to pray that come 2020, we would realize this dream of ours, Insyallah, for the sake of our future generations!
4. Meanwhile, ‘Malaysia Boleh Part II?’ While we may have lost five good years but we STILL HAVE 10 MORE GOOD YEARS TO GO!
5. DSN should continue lending you his full support in realizing this ‘Vision 2020’ for the good of Malaysia and faithful Malaysians instead of focussing too much on politic, as we peace loving Malaysians believe that once the Country is back at its glory days sans during your glory years as our PM, naturally, everyone, if not the majority of us, would vote for the BN again!
6. Hence, ‘Prosperous Malaysia Makes Happy Malaysians!’ albeit what our detractors are trying and planning to do!
7. We, middle class citizens, have had enough of politics already, as it only gets dirtier by the day!, and while at that, the whole world is watching and laughing at us for making fools of ourselves (helped, and egged on by a certain someone with his loathing Malaysians!)
May Allah continue to bless you, Tun!
Dearest Tun M,
Salute to you too for making a dream into reality. It is because of you that the Malaysian team is there….
Nampak bergaya Tun M di sana especially posing next to Naomi Campbell, the Supermodel of the world….
I have been to The LOAF in Langkawi and would like to go to THE LOAF in Pavilion soon………sedap………
WELL DONE, Tun M.
We love you.
salam Tun,
take a gud care of yourself and your family Tun,
may Allah bless you and your family always…
regards,
(mat)
Salam kasih dan salam hormat Ayahanda Tun.
That was a very well written field report from our top chedet blog field reporter indeed.
I did not know up till the point of reading this about the Malaysian designers stints in world renowned Giugiaro; designer of Alfas, Ferraris, Lambos and BMWs. Apart from designing over 125 automobiles and dozens of cameras, Giorgetto Giugiaro had also designed the world first
A lot of people criticised why Petronas do not sponsor the Lotus F1, showing lack of patriotism.
I can only see a more global, branded Petronas with Mercedes Benz and Michael Schumacher in it. After all we have not one, but two presence in F1 Motorsport.
And I don’t see any Malaysia flag or Malaysia name on the Lotus car nor the driver(s) except the third driver. How ‘patrotic’ Lotus have been, I wonder..
Anyway, must make sure we aquire those critical technology to lift Proton to the desired level. Too many of old engines (which are not even ours) on the road, coming fresh from Proton factory even in 2010.
Salam Tun.
I’m still waiting for Proton to come up with its own SUV or 4WD series. I bet those engineers and designers have something in mind.
I sure hope you realize how close the head hunter and the intelligent boys of PL administration almost sold Proton because they were unprofitable. Proton shall never be jeopardized by these bandits anymore. Good day TUN M.
Assalamualaikum Tun,
1st,
I am proud to be Malaysian.
Special thanks to you Tun, Bapa Permotoran Malaysia.
Asalamualaikum…
saya bangga ngan poton…rasanya kita patut sentiasa berhati hati
ngan org yg suka amik untung atas angin n yg amik mudah seme2 perkara….org yg mcm no 14 sentiasa menunggu peluang jer….
borak pasai poton bapak sentiasa bersemangat..saya suka…takder ker rancangan nak kuar 4×4…he he he…..wahhhh..dengar kata bapak akan ada kat…aiiyak..luper lak nama tempat tu….alaaa..pameran
keta antarabangsa yg poton pun buat pameran kat situ….googoooo…
Forza Proton!
