SOUNDBITES

MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The Nation newspaper reported on October 18th that the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Markel, said “Multikulti (Multicultural) in Germany has not worked” (read here).

Her remarks were prompted by the unwillingness of Germany’s non-German population of 16 million, including Turks and Jews to “integrate” with the natives of Germany i.e. the ethnic Germans.

For the Muslim Turks integration means curbs on their religion. Whether the Jews also should have their religion curbed is not mentioned.

I think Malaysia can be regarded as being more successful with multi-culturalism. We are more tolerant of the differences between our racial origins, our religions, our languages and our cultures.

I think Germany and Chancellor Merkel can learn something from Malaysia about multi-culturalism.

  1. Salam Tun,
As I browsed through the page, I found it quite amusing that some people greatly oppose your opinion that Germany can learn something on multiculturalism. Some went to the extent of sending out racist remarks & thoughts with the hopes of prevailing in this very matter, while some really missed the whole point
Quote on Lionelchee: “I don’t see there is anything Germany can learn from Malaysia. Germany is one of the biggest economy in the world. To achieve such feat is a united effort of its people disregard of their races and religions. We cannot jump to conclusions and start comparing with a country which is way ahead of us in terms of economy, technology, education and social behaviour.”
–> Really looking things material-wise,no doubt? Greatest in technology, biggest economy. Our Asian powerhouse neighbour achieves this in great deal, but hey, looks who’s coming to a halt when it comes to searching for the country’s identity & heading? Ironically the greed for endless advancement has somehow erode the littlest sense of nationalism in the people
Quote on seladangbijak: “Germany should emulate Malaysia’s model for all it’s worth! Here’s how it is done in Malaysia:
    1. Temples should not be built near where the residents are Muslims live. They should be placed near factories.
    2. Churches cannot be built near Muslim areas.
    3. Non-halal food should be sold in an area that does not offend Muslims.
    4. In Selangor, to own a dog, a non-muslim must get the permission of the neighbours.
    5. Churches and temples cannot be built without the approval the the city council. Churches cannot ring their bells. Temples cannot make any sounds.
    6. Non-muslims cannot eat any food in schools that offend muslims.
Germany should practise it the Malaysian way!”
—–> Interesting part. Other than coming to a conclusion that our friend here does not understand the few simple rules for a greater harmony to take place, I have to say that I have not heard of anything on #5,nor does #1 which makes no sense. I seriously believe that our friend here is generalising things at great extent, after overheard doses of racist talks. How about a Chinese housing area complaining on a coffin shop set up by their own people in their neighbourhood? Now that baffles me a lot
Take care Tun. God bless you.

  2. Germany has no credibility to discuss or to evaluate success or failure inulticulturalism. Its philosophers like Nitsche borrowed from the Brahminical texts of Manu to create the justification of the Untermenschen and the Ubermenschen which Adolph Hitler with the German population applied as justification for their genocide of Gypsies, Jews, Slavs and other minorities including Turks during World War 2.
Angela Merkel would do the world a service by not commenting on multiculturalism. She lacks the credentials being a German who are stained with the most inhuman and barbaric rulers ever in a millenium. It does the German people no service for her to comment.
Inspite of its probelms yes Malaysia and to a great extent Australia have excellent records in this area of human endevour. People unfortunately believe to say so one has to be perfect. Not so I say. Just the ability to work through the problems multi cuturalism sometimes brings with it.
Tun salaams to you and thank you for the opportunity and privilege to meet with you on 18 November 2010 at your office.

… One of the critical issue in managing that situation is the need to improve communication among the people and it must begin with introduction of the ONE SCHOOL SYSTEM and IT IS A MUST .. as mentioned by Astro guy… //
1-We all concur with that. One school system is the only way to unite all Malaysians together.Being together from a very early age will help to dispel all animosity and unnecessary suspicion amongst the races. But I am against that simple idea of assimilation of the people into one Malaysian race as in the case of Thailand and Indonesia but rather a more challenging process of integration of the various races as a multi cultured Malaysians.
2-The strength of Malaysia is this diverse cultures of people from all over Asia that would enable us to relate to the rest of Asia effectively.Assimilating them into one race negates that blessings from God almighty to us.We would then lose whatever advantage that has already been afforded us.We would no longer be Malaysia truly Asia.We may lose a total of 2.5 billion market for our future wellness and network marketing businesses. Most importantly we would lose the opportunity to harness the magic of synergy that can only be generated through unifying differences together..
3-So that one school system must have a medium of instruction a one that will be acceptable to all Asians and not just Malaysians because our long term mindset is to influence the whole of Asia to Malaysianism.Surely we must have a bigger global mindset than just that national mindset we have today. We are talking 21st century aren’t we?
4-So in that context the global English language would be the most appropriate medium of instruction for this common school system. Now this will be where the main problem will be.The extreme ketuanan melayu people will object ferociously. But if BM is made the medium of instruction, this one school system will surely not be supported by the non Malays.Let us get real.
5-So the Malays must be realistic enough for the sake of this One school. Would the fact that BM will be the national language and will be used extensively when dealing with the Govt departments perhaps appease the ketuanan Melayu supporters?
6-Assuming that they would agree, which is unlikely, the other languages BM,Mandarin or Tamil will also be compulsory languages to be learnt and passed.Actually this will benefit the Malays more as they will have an option to either learn mandarin or Tamil/Hindi other than English. If BM is the medium of instruction the Malays will not be motivated to learn English as is the case now.
7-Like I have already mentioned many times before, sports will be given a greater devotion and will constitute a major and critical component of the education system.Esp crucial at the early stages where there will be more time devoted to sports for the youths to be engaged in competitive games to bond their hearts and their souls.Less academic at the beginning too.We will make schooling great fun!
8-Sports is such a wonderful gift of God that we must not squander away this gift this time around.Nothing can make a person race blind like sports can.It can also make our people healthy and fit, help them better socialized ,as well as build leaders and motivators.
9-The Govt should allocate billions if it takes for the support of sports. It will be an investment not expenses so govt should not worry. It is this important but not urgent nature of Sports that have actually fooled people to think that sports is only superficial, but its not.Let me assure you that there is magic in sports.
10-It is so crucial that I would recommend that a Ministry of Sports should be created. The job is to ensure that sporting activities to be ongoing like a glue to keep the integration going while we go on living our lives as separate races of Malaysia. There is awesome leverage in sports that I find it truly sad that we have so far not appreciated or exploited it enough. Are we blind to its benefits?
11-Once we have formulated the ideal structure of this one school system incorporating the two above mentioned elements-languages and sports-the Government must be strong willed enough to just implement it without the need to consult the various racial groups. As long as the constitution has not been breached just make it happen. And this may be our other problem. The proactive leadership.Oh how I miss Tun now…..
    Thanks Tun.

  4. There is no doubt that Germany can take a lesson or two from Malaysia.
Germany has has done no better in multiculturalism than Japan, South Korea or Saudi Arabia. Relatively, Malaysia has made gigantic strides in this space. We are comparable (in different degrees) to Singapore & America who have embraced multiculturalism- and stand out in the world today for their achievements. Sure we have made some mistakes – an like education system based on race or like India dividing its geography on language (which now cannot be fixed). Both have delivered disastrous consequences. But the point here is that the issues with Malaysia is imminently fixable.
Angela Markel’s comments seem like a carefully worded political remark rather than a honest intention to encourage multiculturalism.
If a country wants a foreign workforce to come in and “do the work till we learn how to copy it”, it should adopt the Saudi model – you will see where it has left the Saudi’s when you look at the numbers of expatriate workforce currently in the country and the skill levels of the local populace.
Can Malaysia survive with the Saudi Model? Of course not! The value Saudi brings to the table is its immense oil wealth. This keeps the much needed expertise & skills flocking into the country – and the expertise will disappear if the wealth abates. Should that happen, Saudi will find their clocks turning back 50 years despite all their “clever” non-oil investments. But to their defense, they never set out to build a multicultural country. Even their efforts to integrate on a GCC level can be rated as opportunistic at best.
Malaysia should encourage the immigrant to do the “long haul” in the country – both he and his offspring. This is the integration and goes beyond merely speaking the language.
Integration is required to ensure that the immigrants skills remains as an core part of Malaysia even with temporary variations in opportunity and state of the economy. Invariably the immigrant will do that if he sees opportunity, security and well being of himself and his family over the long term – even after he is no more. He begins to love the country. America is good case in point here.
Singapore too is doing a lot to foster this feeling. Take their guidelines for a Permanent Residency which is based on skill and the potential long term contributions that the individual (and equally importantly, that his family!) could make to the country. A typical profile is a internationally experienced individual whose children too are likely to acquire international class professional skills. Both, parents and children will be contributing to the country in their lifetime. Makes more sense then just demanding a 5-10 year stint in the country.
Take the MM2H policy: It has been recently changed to allow part time work for people above 50. This is excellent foresight – it will allow Malaysia to leverage off the expertise that the individual has acquired over his lifetime. Remember he is a retiree and does not really need to work for a living.
If this was not allowed, the individual would have just spent his retired life in Malaysia- a waste for both Malaysia and the Individual. What would happen if the retiree felt he could still contribute (though he does not need the money)? We would be forcing him to go across the border and contribute to other countries when Malaysia could well have benefited from his skills.

Here we go again with the bending of the truth in Malaysia by saying it is more tolerant]]
By the word and definition ‘bending of the truth in Malaysia’,you yourselves have chosen a value. An index.Your own belief. It is true you have ‘con’ census on this believes of your’s.But from the perspective of ‘maturity’ you should state something like..
According to my belief that supported by the fact from Anwar case..( example )..I am in the strong belief that here the proponent of ‘bending the truth is never more apt’..Please..
    Be specific to the letter..
[[Yes, Malaysia is more tolerant in that it allows one to practice their religion freely but don’t expect integration to happen in a thousand years if you continue along this line]]
And integration means changing your real name to more Thais and Indonesian accepted name or retaining your own name here like in Malaysia?..:)
[[Finally, there is someone that has the guts to say it loud once and for all. Kudos to you Angela Merkel. It is religion that separates the races and people.]]
Aha..Now..you says we should not missed Hanan here in Tun blog because you and your like a representing him and his kind of logic?
[[There is no tolerance of religion in Malaysia in the sense that one can choose or get in or out of any religion]]
Helo Mr Jaguar…Malaysia does not own Islam and she does not owned up to Islam too!!Islam belong’s to Allah..Do not question’s something beyond your even highly critically aclaimed intelligence..
[[This is happening in Malaysia where the Moslem religion is so inflexible and has turned into law.]]
Ditto above Mr Jaguar and you salutes the Indonesian Government because it allows their citizen this ‘kind of freedom’?…
Nay..Nay Mr Jaguar..How naive you wants us to believes your ‘charade’??
[[Separate religion from state and you will have a country which will be more integrated]]
    Coz?Because?..
    I sez so!!..there!!
[[This is the same as the Jewish religion. Once you marry a Jew or Moslemm, you must convert. Where is the FREEDOM of RELIGION??????]]
Again Mr Jaguar..Now read carefully.Somebody told me he hates American flag because they ‘imitates’ ( ahem..ahem..) the designs of Malaysian flag. Now by the choices of freedom that you emphasizes, we should changes the white colour of our flag to green just to contrasted the colour of American flag.Or..better still, in the name of freedom we tells the American to changes the colour of their flag!!See..how difficult can it be??
Very much Mr Jaguar. This is something you called convention. The world and it’s population must be governed by laws, rule and regulation.Just because a few minority million does not agrees with this constituition, the majority million must accede to their demand..Common sense must prevails where concession can be reach by mutual agreements..A covenant.
Islam belongs to Allah. The religion of hereafter. It is ok if you chose not to believes. It is your right.But..
You have no right whatsoever to question the convention and covenant between Allah,Islam and the purpose and meaning of this constituition..
Go to America and condenms the Roman Chatolic,Protestant,Mormon and whatever..see..they will definitely treats you better
Than they treats you here in Malaysia..
Mr Parameswara2,Mr Checker,Mr Ahmad Badri and to whom it may conscience..Jangan diam sahaja bila Islam di sakiti..
    Terima kasih Tun.

  6. Dearest Tun,
May I borrow your platform to pass Hajar a message:
    Daer Hajar,
In Malaysia, the minorities who settled here pre-1957, and their children, are now citizens.
In Germany, they are often regarded as “immigrants”.
That’s why our country fare better in terms of social cohesiveness.
As to why why we are not the perfect role model, is because there are people out there who still regard their fellow citizens as “immigrants”.
I used to study the concept of “Jus Soli” in the text book.
I am not sure whether the term can still be found nowadays.
That’s why the proposal to make history a compulsory subject in SPM sounds fishy for me.
    Thanks, Tun.

  7. Dearest YAB Tun,
    1. I agree that those who immigrate to another country must learn the NATIVE language. In addition, they have to be FLUENT in that language.
    2. It

  8. Dearest Tun,
I apologize to “con skaltsas” and “astroguy”, because immediately after I read “con skaltsas”‘s message, I didn’t go on and read “astroguy” message before I wrote the previous two messages.
After I spent time reading “astroguy”‘s message, I can now form my opinion in the right perspective. Sorry about that.
The problem is that, from the minority groups’ past experience, when they had to give in for a promised period of time, for the sake of the country, they would lose it forever.
That’s why even though Tun’s proposed “vision 2020 schools”, which I think is very remarkable, were not received favourably by certain quarters.
Nevertheless, the lost trust can be regained, if the authority acts in the right way.

  9. Dearest Tun,
To find out the real cause to the “national disunity” in terms of education, let’s consider two scenarios.
    Scenario 1:
The whole class (consisted mainly of those who were from the non-mainstream primary school background) could not make it to the local universities (the other better class had only a few).
Later in their working life, some quarters in the society suggested that they were from a “shool type” that was the cause of “national disunity”.
    Scenario 2:
There was only 1 school system.
However, a portion of the students still could not make it to the local universities, even though they had met the grades.
Later in their working life, some quarters still blamed that these former school drop-outs were from a “group” that was the cause of national disunity.
So, regardless of the school systems, the issue remains as long as the real cause of the problem is not identified.

  10. Dearest Tun,
I disagree with “con skaltsas” and “astroguy”.
The country has benefitted a lot from the people from the other school systems.
It was a usual case that the whole class could not make it to the local universities during 1980’s (I am not aware of the situation now). So they dropped out and went on to do business. For some, they now deal with people in China, and make some money for the country.
Some of the students who did not drop out, would pursue their further studies in Japan. But because Chinese characters were lingua franca in those areas in the old time. So, they learned quickly.
As a matter of fact, I treat people of different ethnic background better than my own. I always start my conversation in Bahasa when I speak with the Malay people. I have noticed that the richer persons would respond in English instead. Somehow, i can’t help but to think that their open-mindedness is a crucial factor that contributes to their success in businesses.

  11. I agree with Mr. astroguy, one school system is the ultimate key to unite young Malaysians. They must define themselves as true Malaysian and speak in national language. Some of us are already spoiled by nostalgia and sentimental values.

  12. Tun
In Malaysia where Bahasa is the national language, all other schools must still learn Bahasa no matter what national-type schools they may be. We are smarter to incorporate English as another language we need to master as medicine & computer languages are still in English.
In Germany, the migrants 1)do not integrate culturally (like as in Malaysia) and 2)migrant do not learn the German language either. Soit is doomed to fail already.
If this happens in Malaysia, those who refuse to integrate had failed.

  13. Assalamualaikum wbt. dan salam 1 Malaysia Yg Bhg Tun,
Yes, what you said is definitely true in contact of Malaysia whereby all races with multicultural, multiriligous etc.,has successfully integrated and better understanding with each other as compared to other countries such as Germany.
    The reasons:
    1. We have excellent governmenet – Barisan Nasional.
    2. Since Merdeka we are truely united in every aspect of life.
    3. We are all against extremis in contact of religous, races (racis), cultures, politics and all other aspects of live.
    4. We like to live in peace and harmony.
    5. Our ultimate goal is to develop our country to be one the most well developed country in the world. Infact we have partly achieved that especially during the admisitrative of Tun Dr. Mahathir as Prime Minister.
    6. We are lucky the present Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak is truely going on the right track on developing the country as well as the nations building.
    7. We can be proud to be Malaysian, that our country has become good examples to some of other developing countries especially in the aspects of multiracial, multireligous, and the way our country being managed and developed, etc.
Our hindrans come from some of our political leaders especially on the opponent parties such as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) who regularly visited other countries and criticised badly about our country. The moved does not bring any good values or any advantages for the future of our country. The said leader has only one ultimate goal is to become next Prime Minister of Malaysia, not considering occuring damages to the image of the country. We should be clear of our mind and always think rasionally, especially in choosing an excellent leader of the country.
Pas actually has their own streght since their existance in Malaysia even before Merdeka. Today Pas has deviated almost 100% from their original policies, ever since they are together with DAP and PKR with one purpose to topple down UMNO and Barisan Nasional. Pas actually created their own big mistake by engaging themself with DAP and PKR as Pakatan Rakyat. It is beleived that majority of their supporters especially at grass root level realized their disadvantages of joining DAP and PKR, but normally their voices are not being entertained by their leaders especially Tok Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat, who used religous as his strong weapon to retain support from the grass root level. DAP strongly against the development of Islam in Malaysia, and furthermore against the recognitioned given by some other countries that Malaysia is a Modern Muslim country and courted as an example. The question is why Pas is so attracted to DAP for their future political survival. Let the public vorters to evaluate them in the next general electriction.
PKR is fulled of unsolved internal problems, very well known by the public vorters. The top leaders are not considering all kind of problems brought out by midle class leaders and the supporters at the grass root level. They are actually totally deviating from the meaning of Keadilan or Justice.

I don’t see there is anything Germany can learn from Malaysia. Germany is one of the biggest economy in the world. To achieve such feat is a united effort of its people disregard of their races and religions. We cannot jump to conclusions and start comparing with a country which is way ahead of us in terms of economy, technology, education and social behaviour. Just to cut short my comments, don’t compare a BMW and a Proton. You can buy a BMW 3 series in Germany with the price of a Perdana which we are paying in Malaysia. We are just insulting ourselves.//
    Dear Lionel,
1-One of the obvious character of the Germans is their highly racists nature. It was what that contributed to their success as a nation.
2-The Germans being a purely Great Aryan people are a superior race.Because of this belief planted in their sub conscience by their effective propaganda machine, they actually have produced truly great world class feats in every area like you have correctly said it.
3-That is also how they could commit such atrocious and heinous crime on the Jewish people before, people who like the Muslim Turks today have a belief that is quite confrontational with their beliefs.
4-While the Jews reject Jesus outright, the Muslims deny Jesus the divinity. And both these people the Jews and the Muslims will not compromised in matters of faith. It is truly understandable that multi culturism cannot thrive in proud Germany.Their expectation is that these immigrants must blend into their Christian German civilization is simply unrealistic.
5-That is why its incorrect to say that the Germans have nothing to learn from us Malaysians. That would be too arrogant. Can’t they see how all the various races here can practice their religious rituals like Thaipusam,Chap Goh Meh,Christmas etc so freely without causing any negative impact on the nation all. That there is really nothing to fear.
6-What are they so afraid of?The proud Germans must realize that the world is really becoming a global village now that no matter how they want to keep their country purely German it will not be possible.A new world order will soon come in place with God’s help as what I believe is this happy End of History, the advent of this multicultural Global Village.
7-At that time the whole World will be just one huge Malaysia. That is why there is no better country to come and learn about multi kulti other than Malaysia.I think its about time now to start calling muticulturism as simply Malaysianism. But how to teach the World Malaysianism is of course another matter altogether.Should we advise them to amend their constitution first?
    Thanks Tun.

  15. Lionelchee said, “..don’t compare a BMW and a Proton. You can buy a BMW 3 series in Germany with the price of a Perdana which we are paying in Malaysia. We are just insulting ourselves.”
I humbly agree with Lionelchee. It’s not about the rhetorics of ‘multiculturalism’, or ‘unity’. What people want is simply to have a prosperous, happy & satisfied life.
Besides, until you can demonstrate the “curbs on their religion” of the Muslim Turks in Germany being enforced by the German government, I say, send my warmest regards to Chancellor Angela Merkel.

  16. Salam Tun,
Intresting yet sensitive in nature this multicultural issue. We’ve heard it all….justification, sacrifices and time invested to make it work.
Malaysia is truly a success story to a degreee.Comparable to most countries,Malaysia could actually boast about her workable multicultural formula.
So what is the main adjoining factor in this fusion of colours, race and religion of people?Definately not goverment policies.
It’s the people of Malaysia, the Rakyat.More precisely the Malay people.Yes ,that is the simple truth and it’s not a racist statement.
The Malays allowed other cultural and religion to grow in Malaysia.whether they did out of naiveness or compassion is besides the point. They shared their forfathers land, wealth and position. Some will argue not without sacrifices and hardship and yes thats very true too but the Malays actually allowed the usage of their forfathers land and wealth. The Malays have been allowing pilgrimage and migration to their motherland long before the British decided to cut their loses and run.
Asia plays a big part in this success story too.All major races in Malaysia come from a very strong religious and traditional background. The does and don’t are defined in our DNA.WE knew how to behave.how to survive honestly and the works. This combination also contributes to Malaysia’s multicultural success story.
This has made Malaysia what she is today.Congratulations to all Malaysians.Multicultural Malysian style is almost impossible to archieve, you’ll need good hearted host, cultured and traditionally inclined migrants and a lot of compromise all the ways.
Tun,thanks for your contribution to multicuturalisms Malaysians style.
    Waalaikumsalam Muhammad Syafiq

  17. Assalamualaikum Tun…, Yes, German could learn from our multi-cultural way of life. Malaysians are people that adhere to Malaysian constitution, and not some wishy form of new thinking or ideology.
The problem is, there are Malaysians out there who are trying to profess a new Malaysia. So… they say that this new Malaysia will be far better than the present Malaysia, which they see as being governed racially.
If we try to figure out at the statistics, these new Malaysians are being born out of a main racial group : the Chinese. They command a good 20% voters, and with the Malays splitting into so many political parties, they will try to harness it for their own well-being. Of course, there are these Malays, who think that they could control the Chinese chauvinism.
What I am driving at is that our multi-culturalism simply do not exist out of mutual and honest understanding, but tainted with political wish and whimp. If the present government could not really barracaded these political onslaught, I’m afraid that Malaysian multi-culturalism will be burnt in a racial conflict, far more worst than May 13, ’69!

  18. Salam Tun & fellow bloggers,

“Harmony must be one of the goals of any actions. Nevertheless, harmony does not come easily. It comes with understanding, acceptance, approval and sacrifice of certain things.”
Total in agreement to that. The fact is that the situation is not easy to change and even to the extend, I could say that it cannot be changed without hurting others in the process. The best we can do therefore is to MANAGE the situation and manage it well as to achieve peace & harmony as unchallenged national objective. One of the critcal issue in managing that situation is the need to improve communication among the people and it must begin with introduction of the ONE SCHOOL SYSTEM and IT IS A MUST .. as mentioned by Astro guy.
It is up to the wisdom, commitment and the courage of leaders of each community to sit down, discuss and agree to this issue and make it happens.
May Allah bless and protect us all.

  19. Germany should emulate Malaysia’s model for all it’s worth! Here’s how it is done in Malaysia:
    1. Temples should not be built near where the residents are Muslims live. They should be placed near factories.
    2. Churches cannot be built near Muslim areas.
    3. Non-halal food should be sold in an area that does not offend Muslims.

    5. Churches and temples cannot be built without the approval the the city council. Churches cannot ring their bells. Temples cannot make any sounds.
    6. Non-muslims cannot eat any food in schools that offend muslims.
Germany should practise it the Malaysian way!

  20. Dearest Tun,
Speaking of social integration, and the resulting peace and tranquility, I think many of us are interested to find out which of these regions Tun would like to bring your family for a short vacation:
    Southern Germany
    North-western India
    Southern Philippines
    Southern Thailand
    North-western China
    South-eastern Russia
and many more which, due to my ignorance, I am not aware of.
Now, what’s wrong with modern era Germany?
They had once fought two biggest wars in human history, yet they have no more passport stamping borders with their neighbours.
Yes, they made great mistakes in the past, yet their leader had the courage to kneel down in front of the whole world and asked for forgiveness.
If A once killed many of B, B and A are no longer enemy, B and C are now enemies, while C quarel with D, E, F, G, and H, which party do you think needs to learn a lesson (from who?) about social cohesiveness? A?
Tun’s invaluable opinions are very sought after in this regards.

  21. QUOTE: “I think Malaysia can be regarded as being more successful with multi-culturalism. We are more tolerant of the differences between our racial origins, our religions, our languages and our cultures. I think Germany and Chancellor Merkel can learn something from Malaysia about multi-culturalism.”
If we should think that we are better off than the other person because we are “merely” suffering from second-stage cancer while the other person is suffering from third-stage cancer, then it is time to sit down and rethink whether we have any cause to rejoice. As a nation, we must admit that we have also failed to integrate society, if we are to measure ourselves with what Islam teaches. Correct me if I am wrong, but did not the Prophet in his Last Sermon reminded all Muslims:
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves. ”
And here, we have Ketuanan Melayu which is a blatant transgression against what the Prophet preached. Wake up then and start practising the true essence of Islam before we tell Germany and Chancellor Merkel to learn something from Malaysia about multi-culturalism.

  22. Dearest Tun,
In my opinion, Angela Markel should thank God, be content and feel relief that after 6 million Jewish people have died, yet the “worst” that a Jews does in return is just by showing their reluctance to integrate (provided the assumed reluctance is true).
These people should be commended for holding on dearly to their traditions, so that in the future, we will have a variety of cultures to appreciate and to refer to when the need arises.
Different cultures can synergize and contribute to humanity in different ways. No point having a single culture which will make the world a dull place to live in.
By forcing others to forgo their cultures for the sake of integration, e.g., by banning Chinese medicines etc., we may indirectly remove the cure to some unknown diseases of the future that we ourselves may suffer.
Japanese decided to bomb Pearl harbour during WWII, partly because of their looking down on the rojak society of America which they thought would lose the war.
In my opinion, if Angela wants to learn, she might as well learn from the country the people of which have the guts to elect a person from the minority race to the presidency.

  23. For LionelChee: you seriously have problem. After just two paragraphs, you’re already in conclusion…man..pretty smart.

  26. Dear Tun and others,
Angela Markel is a visionary leader of europe and she was very right in saying that. Germany is an advance and sussesful country of europe perhaps the world. They are way ahead of Malaysia in running their country, economically and socially. You are wrong in assuming that germans should follow malaysia in managing thier country. instead malaysia should follow germany in dealing with racial relation problems. Never fully recognise non german as their citizen. With that, non germans have less right in germany.

  27. Assalamualaikum.

  28. We were more harmonious and more tolerant to us others back then but it has deteriorate to a very this extent due to selfish, power craze politicians (ruling & opposition alike) and publicity seeking NGOs (pro & anti alike).
I remember walking back home from school along the railway track during May13 ’69 (I was living in small kampong called Kg. Bakar Batu near Rasah New Village) when a group of young Malay boys sitting on the railway track started shouting “potong cina”.
I panic, frozen on the spot then suddenly another group of older boys carrying machette came running out from the small durian orchard and I thought to myself ‘I am dead meat’.
To my surprise they went for that group of boys and pulled their ears and slapped them.
The older boys knows I’m staying in the kampong escorted me home, apologising for the incident, give assurance to my mother that we are save here and have nothing to worried about.
They were armed because they are afraid of the chinese from the new village might attacked the kampong.
Later that evening the penghulu came to our house bringing us some rations and apologise to my father for the behavior of the group of young boys.
I believe Malaysian fare much better without the interference of the so call “jaguh bangsa”, WE NEVER HATED ONE ANOTHER, IT IS ONLY FEAR THAT HAS BEEN INSTILLED BY THESE SCUMs THAT BRING ABOUT DISTRUST AMONGST US.

  29. Salam Tun and Bloggers,
I like what Mr. Checker has commented. I also notice Malaysian today, they like to spread all kinds of rumours, slander, etc. My understanding in Islam teaching is that if it is true, it is called ‘mengumpat’ or ‘mengadu domba’. If it is not true it is slander. Both are not permitted. Instead, if we have strong claims we can do it in a proper channel e.g. the judiciary system.
But today, these dubious words are so cheap its was commercialised in the internet in a widespread manner (RPK website require paid registeration from visitor who like to comment in his website). No allegation was made just simply tell people that guys is corrupted, that fellow is killing somebody, etc.
If I may recalled, once a PAS follower in my kampung used to tell me that Tok Det is watching ‘blue’ movie in his house with his grandchildren. He said, he got basis for his claims but was never available or been produced to us. This is one of the factor why I hate these kind of people…..
My dad told me, ‘Dunia Akhir Zaman’…maybe it is akhir zaman already….

  30. Are you serious? Learn from Malaysia?
Cultural diversity in Germany failed because the majority of Germans are racist. Let me give you some relevant examples, Nazism. Oh wait, just this one will do. Germans are proud race. The only friendly german is a drunk german.
The Malaysian model of curbing economic and political freedom of its minorities are illegal in the EU zone. There are anti-discrimination laws which all EU members must abide. People sue governments and corporations for being discriminative in EU.
In a way, the civil rights laws in EU are too advance and progressive for some of its people. Unrestricted movement in the EU zone happened overnight and the influx of people with skin colours other than white deteriorated the social balance in some EU countries.
The only lesson the Germans can take from Malaysia is DO NOT BE LIKE MALAYSIA because malaysia is run by gumbies.

  32. Tun,
Why multi-culturalism is not working in Germany?
Allow me to give a two sen worth of my analysis.
1)Here the authority put a gun on the forehead on people to toe the line.Overthere, the government is not doing that.
2)The “bumiputra” here is a poor lot as claimed but overthere they are the richer lot.
3)Here,the “coerced” people are generally richer and prefer to dig more pot of gold than stand up for their rights. Some are so timid to the extent of walking with the “tail between the legs”.
4)Over there, the 16 million people are poorer and are more united and want to be more vocal.
5)Here we have the draconian laws to deal with the disobedients(you should what are the laws).Overthere, there is no such laws yet.
6)Overthere,the “bumi” also helms the military and also the police but are more restrained lots.
So,it is NOT an apple to apple comparison. It is not tested yet under more liberal circumstances.

  33. The Malay has, and always considered themselves as Malaysian since the beginning. I wonder who never considers themselves Malaysian and all the time praising Singapore, China, Taiwan? 🙂
They, also ask the Malays, especially Muhyiddin, and Najib to whether declare themselves Malaysian first, or Malay first. But…..
Let us ask them one question, what are they? Malaysian first, or Chinese first? if Malaysian first, then adapt.
Dont talk about ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ if you yourself is so filthy racist, Bangsa Malaysia is about a nation, a race.
Lim Kit Sial oppss… sorry wrong spelling Lim Kit Siang, Chinese first or Malaysian first?
And oh ya.. how was the 41.8 Million squandered by DAP in Selangor? hahaha, the funniest part about it was that, the Chairman of this so-called ‘transparency, and accountabily’ Selcat itself AWARDED his own son contracts, and projects.
and PAS… how was Kohilal abuse? where the money went to? how was the ‘BALAK’ in Perak? and the big woods in Kelantan? LOL

  35. Assalamu’alaikum Tun,
    terimakasih Tun.

  38. Here we go again with the bending of the truth in Malaysia by saying it is more tolerant. Yes, Malaysia is more tolerant in that it allows one to practice their religion freely but don’t expect integration to happen in a thousand years if you continue along this line. Finally, there is someone that has the guts to say it loud once and for all. Kudos to you Angela Merkel. It is religion that separates the races and people. There is no tolerance of religion in Malaysia in the sense that one can choose or get in or out of any religion. This is happening in Malaysia where the Moslem religion is so inflexible and has turned into law. Separate religion from state and you will have a country which will be more integrated. This is the same as the Jewish religion. Once you marry a Jew or Moslemm, you must convert. Where is the FREEDOM of RELIGION??????

  39. Salam sejahtera Tun,
To a certain extend I may agree that Malaysia has proved that our style of creating harmony among races in this country has success. Some of my friend said this is not Malaysia style but MALAY STYLE instead. I don’t think other country/nation will agree with the way we do. Our level of abnormal tolerance are extremely high. No other races are willing do like the Malay leaders do.
We are willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of friendship or to ensure our friend are happy. We actually doing this for the short term happiness. To make non Malay leaders happy. By allowing educational system based on race. i.e. National schools for Malays, independent Chinese school, Tamil school we are leading to more divide nation. Of late racism in Malaysia is worsening.
20 years from now we will find Malaysian can’t understand each other. Whenever we communicate or whenever discussion take place we must have interpreter – If there is a function/gathering we will find in one corner there will be a group of people which can only speak Chinese, another corner only Malay speaking and another corner only speak Tamil. In Government department there will be 3 or 4 different interpreter otherwise the department can not function.
We actually are leading to create more disunity nation once Malay has no more to sacrifice.
    Mazai

  40. a’kum to all
wow, there are many racist person than the non-racist person. as far as i know, Malaysia is one of the best maybe the best i think in the world. people who cannot accept that is ungrateful(who live in malaysia). if u dont like it fine, go somewhere else and show the result proving that malaysia is not a GREAT MULTI-RACIAL country. just dont act childish to take “one or two” issues that showed Malaysia had done the wrong things, at least the government overcome most of it about racial problem. dont judge by looking to the wrong side only, what about the good side? will you judge it too? just because there are some black moments doesnt mean that malaysia is a bad multi-racial country. there are too many wise, inteligent, clever and whatsoever nowadays, but thinking for the most logical thing is very hard for them. they just want to condemn the others to show their advantages and to save only ONE race rather than unite. very selfish. i will not consider that is a wise person but a very shallow thinking person. TQ

  42. Dearest Tun
1-Malaysia is obviously the only truly multi cultural country in the world because the constitution has ensured that we must be one.
2-The Tunku is pivotal in the birth of this constitution. He had much faith in all the other races to be able to live together with the Malays although they remain in their original cultural forms.
3-It is truly unique no other country in this world would ever consider. What prompted them to accept such a condition I suppose would have been their desperation to achieve independence.
4-Perhaps the only option opened to the Tunku was that if he had not accepted these terms, there will be no independence leaving which the only other option was to fight an insurgency against the British.
5-Do the Malays have the fighting energy to go against
the British/Commomwealth armies? Could they win? Will many more lives be put to risk? They were at that time fighting the communist guerillas together with the British. So another war was just simply out of their minds.I guess then there was really no option.A matter of take it or leave it?
6-We have survived together as a multi cultural country so far but I sincerely think that we are only lucky.Very lucky actually.
7-The Malays dominate the armed forces so the Chinese and Indians would need to think twice before they can decide to lose their cool.
8-Our country is prosperous enough to afford the discriminatory affirmative actions to help out the Malays. Thanks to Petronas?
9-The Malays are natural World class leaders who although have lost their trading economic skills through colonialization of the European powers have not lost their leadership talent inherited from the days of the great Malaccan Empire. Our world class leadership is a fact only the envious will deny.
10-And the other races the Chinese and Indians are survival races that could benefit from their cultural links with China and India and are economically independent.Worse comes to worse they can still cari makan.
11-But the question is for how long could this peace and harmony be sustained. Is it safe for us to assume that whatever we are doing now is in order and could be continued forever. Is it really wise to take things for granted.Could the advent of the global village threaten us out of our comfort zones?
12-Are we actually ready to teach others multi culturalism? Will that mean we will recommend them to first amend their constitution to allow these immigrant races their rights to their original cultures?I truly wonder.
    Thanks Tun.

  44. The best way to learn about Malaysia is to let Angela Merkel be the PM and Najib be the Chancellor. She will drive out the pendatangs and Najib will have 1Germany. Heil Merkel the PM! Heil Najib!

  45. Corrupted politicians ruins everything. Greed and unwilling to share the wealth among fellow race or countrymen, is the traitor to his own race and the country.
Not enough of his own doing, he influenced others to follow his own bad doing. The kampung folks who once worked with, played and laughed with other folks of other races are now being politically brain-washed into thinking otherwise of his fellow neighbors.
What do you call this scenario?
A non-bumi have worked with a bumiputera company for over 10 years. Together, pious owner and worker have built the company up from a small enterprise to become a successful medium sized international company.
On and off work, the worker joined in owner’s family events, and kenduris.
Then one day, the call of race patriotism awaken with the new generation taking over. The company decided that it has to stay pure as a 100% bumi company. Owner and the family who were once close to the worker have now suddenly become cold and non-communicative. The worker faced obstacle after obstacles in the course of work, and was eventually side-lined. The worker packed up and left the company feeling much disappointed where over 10 years of true friendship and assisting to build the company up does not matter anymore.
Perhaps soon the new mgmt. may be given large projects and perhaps soon, the MD will be given a Dato ship..? Perhaps soon, he will be among the big boys league.. Perhaps, he is now called a true bumi entrepreneur.. and soon declare the company as a 100% bumi company…
Materialism overpowered the true friendship of Malaysians. Is this 1Malaysia that we all hollared out loud about ? I doubt so.

  46. We are just insulting ourselves.

  47. Assalamualaikum Tun, Hye All…
As of 2008, the second largest national group of people in Germany was
from Turkey and most of them are muslims… As a current Chancellor of
Germany, how come Angela Merkel can said such a remark like that?
    – “Multicultural in Germany has not worked” – She is the chairman of
the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and she was the Chairman of
the CDU-CSU (Christian Social Union) parliamentary coalition… Saying
such a words like that in public and as a leader, it is a disgrace.
Im not saying that Malaysia is a very-very ggoooooddd example of
multiracial. But at least we are trying and not make it
    too “mainstream”…
Yea there’s a racist in our country but hey – all people and even
tourist in Malaysia can see here EVERYDAY the Chinese stop their car
by the road buying the Malay nasi lemak… After subuh prayer the
Malay go to mamak stall eating Indian rooted roti canai and teh tarik.
The Chinese developer build houses and the Malay or Indian buy it…
The Malay make a movie and won the trophy at international film-fare
(not sure at Geneva or Paris) while there’s Chinese actor / actress
on it. Simple – we still want to be Malaysian even we call ourselves
as a Malay, Chinese or Indian… Who cares of the root country. Im
happy for our Maxis billionaire Ananda Krishnan and our Petronas or
even our Berjaya Group (Vincent Tan huh?)…
See – that’s Malaysia fully multi-racial… Everybody supports Lee
Chong Wei here or even Hafiz Hashim during Thomas Cup or All England.
The Germany should learn from their racist history… In 1933,
persecution of the Jews became active Nazi policy… On the same year,
the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service was
passed, banning Jews from being employed in government. In May
1935, Jews were forbidden to join the Wehrmacht (Armed Forces),
and that year, anti-Jewish propaganda appeared in Nazi German
    shops and restaurants.
Here in Malaysia where the majority are the muslims, we will accept
anybody as long as they dont disturb other people, obey the law,
respect our constitution (of 1948-1957) and accept Islam as the
official religion but everybody here is FREE to perform their
own faith be it Christian, Hindu, Buddha or anything. Because
    THIS – IS – MALAYSIA.

  50. Salam Tun,
I think the essence of a multicultural society is the language..
Citizen of all races MUST learn and practice a common language at the same time respecting each others religion and historical culture.
Of late, racism in Malaysia beginning to worsen, largely due to the educational system which was based on race. ie. National schools for Malays, independent chinese school, KAFA etc..
We should abolish this practice and adopt a single National school with optional language and religious classes. A single school session: national school in the morning and language or religious classes on the evening.
More investment is required for a good educational system and capability to distribute FAIR allocation to all races based on merits.
This is the root cause of racism in Malaysia.

  51. Salam Tun & Fellow bloggers,
TUN, you are dead-right. The trouble is that somebody just so dumb and moron who will take the trouble to campaign to world to say otherwise. They just cannot accept our achievement as a unique ” multicultural & multireligion” nation – one and the only one in the world.
It is understandable for leaders like Angela Markel and many others do not understand about us but the sad part is that our own “Malaysian” do not want to accept and even to acknowledge and making by worst by telling lies to the world through various available media. These people are TRAITORS, otherwise what should we call them.
May Allah bless and protect us all.

  52. Dr M-which part of the article “read here” singled out the Jews for failure to intergrate? Pls dont drag the Jews in because of Hitler. The Turks who are muslims are the problem. They dont integrate just like the muslims in Australia. The muslims are demanding no Santa Claus, No Easter, No Xmas celebrations at schools and closure of public pools on certain days for women to swim in their dirty garbs etc but they forget they are in a Christian country. Makes me wonder why most muslim migrants choose to migrate to wealthy western countries. Why not muslim countires like Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and the rest of Middle East?

  53. Tun,
“We are more tolerant of the differences between our racial origins, our religions, our languages and our cultures.”
In my opinion, NEP does play an important part in our success in multiculturalism.
But, we could have done better than that, if it was implemented properly.

  54. Dear Tun,
This is the most funniest remark from you, ask the German to learn from Malaysia on the issue Multi-culture……
Yesterday in Penang there was street protest between anti-ISA and pro-ISA, one of the pro-ISA commented…

  55. Tun,
Yes you are right when others can learn from us Malaysian with regards to multiculturalism, more so before than nowadays. I remember, we do not have so much problem then as compared to now. And recently the Def Minister Zahid Hamidi question the patriotism of others with such remark.
Respect others as you aspect others to respect you. I remember this quote “Freedom is your right to swing your arms as long as you do not touch the other person” and I add “Freedom of speech are yours as long as what you say do not offend others”
