WATER AGREEMENTS

1. Next year, 2011, one of the agreements to supply up to 86 million gallons of water per day (mgd) from Johore to Singapore at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons will end.

2. I understand Johore is still buying treated water from Singapore for 50 sen per 1,000 gallons. The amount purchased should not exceed 12 per cent of the raw water bought by Singapore.

3. The agreement also stipulates that the price of raw water and treated water can be renegotiated and changed if both parties agree. Should the raw water price be revised upwards Singapore would be entitled to revise the price of treated water.

4. If, for example, under the current agreement the water price is increased to 6 sen per 1,000 gallons, i.e. 100 per cent, Singapore can insist on the same percentage price increase by 100 per cent i.e. from 50 sen per 1,000 gallons to one Ringgit per thousand gallons.

5. If both sides agree on this quantum of price increase, Singapore would actually earn more from selling treated water to Johor than Malaysia would earn from selling raw water to Singapore.

6. Almost 10 years ago Johor was allocated sufficient money to build its own treatment plant so as not to buy treated water from Singapore. I am told that for reasons unknown, despite building its own treatment plant Johore is still buying treated water from Singapore.

7. Johore sells raw water to Melaka at 30 sen per 1,000 gallons. It seems that Johore is less generous towards Melaka than it is towards a foreign country. The wisdom of this escapes me.

8. Whatever, in 2011, a new agreement to supply Singapore with raw water from Johore may have to be made, I think that despite Singapore’s desalination plant, despite Newater, and new reservoirs, Singapore would still need raw water from Johore. We should be willing to supply the people of Singapore with raw water.

9. The question is whether we should sell at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons and buy at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons of treated water as before or we should extract better terms.

10. Malaysian negotiators are unduly generous and we often provide ourselves with no exit clause. I will not cite the cases.

11. The public, the Johore people in particular, should be assured that we don’t make agreements which are indefensible this time.

p/s: seriously, ada org tgh buat duit from this agreement.

  2. Salam Tun and Tun’s Fan.
it’s good to comment and critisize but who takes notes and action on the comments here, by the people. I doubt it! I think its like a place to lepas geram and tu jerlah.. (me inclusive!).. tapi takpe.. nak lepaskan jugak..
Nazri says he’s not obligated to answer to just anyone beside the parliament! Ini ke sikap rakyat didahulukan? I really think ramai yang frust dapat pemimpin yg macam ni..
Opinions from the people is so very easily accessible, nak tak jer..
    3. parliament malaysia is very not democratic. Usul yang bagus pun depa tolak tepi.. semata2 its originated from the opposition? is opposition representative not people ke? by right, once elected to the parliament, soal party, soal peribadi has kena tolak tepi.. tapi tunggulah election baru lepas kiamat..
    4. Halal/Haram.. apa hukumnya makan gaji buta? halal ke haram? Rasanya haram kot. wakil rakyat yang tak menyuarakan suara rakyat.. dok tidur dalam parlimen, tak bukak mulut, ponteng persidangan.. tak buat persediaan utk sesi perbahasan.. semua makan gaji haram.. hukum haram == hukum makan babi.. we have been fooled for so many years of electing wakil yg have no intention to represent the people.. politics is dirty and its tough to cleanse it..
    5. price of fuel naik lagi hari ni? ini ke kerja wakil rakyat yang diamanahkan untuk menjaga kepentingan rakyat. saya rasa depa ni tak rasa kesusahan rakyat langsung.. cuba buang all the wakil rakyat punya privileges.. elaun tu, elaun ni, subsidi tu, subsidi ni.. wakil rakyat tak keluarkan a single cent to fill-up petrol.. mana depa nak rasa kesusahan rakyat.. gaji menteri puluh ribu.. pas tu cakap, terpaksa.. RAKYAT MALAYSIA MEMANG BODOH JIKA MASIH MEMILIH PEMIMPIN SEKARANG!
    I adjouned for now.

Singapore = Israel = America… they are all same

  4. SALAM
    TUN..
    dan yang lain..
senang cerita begini.
    wassalam

  5. I don’t understand!
Why can’t Malaysia treat their own water?
Why must Singapore treat the water for us?
Malaysia is a bigger country compared to Singapore.
We have all the expertise, money and large amount of lands in Johor.
Why can’t we treat our own water?
Why do we need to sell water to Singapore?
We are not having enough water for our own people!
Why should we let a small country bully us the bigger country by agreeing to their stupid terms?
I think we must halt whatever water agreement we have with Singapore with immediate effect. We don’t need them to treat our water. We can do it ourself.
I think someone is taking commission by millions of Ringgits by agreeing or extending this water agreement.
Sell whatever you like but don’t sell water!
It is not a renewable commodity!

  6. http://www.mfa.gov.sg/internet/press/water/faq.html
For every 1000 gallons of water:
Singapore pays 3 sen for the raw water from Malaysia
Singapore pays RM2.40 to treat this water
Malaysia pays 50 sen to buy this treated water from Singapore
Malaysia sells this treated water at RM3.95 to Johor residents
Singapore pays 3 sen for raw water, but the real cost to us for raw water is much higher because we pay for all the construction costs to build the reservoirs, dams and pipeworks to bring the water to Singapore.
On the other hand, Malaysia makes money from the treated water they buy from us. Each day, Malaysia buys 37 million gallons of treated water. This means that we lose to Malaysia RM70,000 a day for treated water, and Johor makes a profit of RM128,000 every day by selling treated water bought cheaply from us. That’s a profit of RM47 million each year!

  7. Desalination plant, recycle water plant and better management of rain water catching are undoubtly the future in sustainable water management. The increase in population, uncertain weather and rainfall, shallowed river bank due to sedimantation, polluted rivers and competition from industry and agricultural for water resources are stressing the water supply capability in any country and unfortunately Malaysia is not spared.
The government of singapore is having a far sighted vision to develop and invest in technology to sustain its water resources. The next step will be production of water by using renewable energy such as wind turbine, solar and even wave power. I have no doubt that Singapore has the capability to develop and mature the technology.
Remember the racing between the turtle and the rabbit and finally the turtle emerge as the winner. It is not surprise that Malaysia might buy recycle water from Singapore in thirty years time.

  8. Salam,
    Syabas Tun!

  9. Dear Tun and other users,
    The latest information to share.
The Singapore government has stated that it will not renew the 1961 agreement which expires in 2011. Attempts to reach a new deal with Malaysia to secure water supply for Singapore beyond 2061 have not borne fruit despite years of tedious negotiations. To reduce Singapore’s dependence on imported water, the government has taken steps to increase the size of the local water catchment area and to build up the supply from non-conventional sources, namely NEWater (reclaimed water) and desalinated water. With the various water projects progressing well, government officials have assured Singaporeans that the country can be self-reliant in water by 2061 if it needs to be.

Minta maaf sangat.

  12. Assallammualaikumwarahmatulahiwabarokatuh..
Tun..semoga sudi memberi ruang dan keizinan..:)
    [[cherrycherry]]
If you say that after all the Johor water will flow to the sea (if we do not want to sell to Singapore)]]
Mr cherychery..I did not even implied this as so ( wanting to sell water to singapore )let alone confounding them to the issue..I am making a statement here..Please..oh please..don’t make an impression that I did..:)
[[then nobody is forcing Singapore to buy water from Malaysia but why did’nt Singapore take that water from the sea and treat it instead of buying from Johor???]]
This is the bone of contention.
When we are weak people will take advantages..Somebody before us made a huge, colossal and gargantuan mistake’s.From pointing all the gun’s in wrong direction ( anticipating Japanese assaults from the sea )and many other’s and we suffered this decision. My contention is about how we are going to rectified this error of mistakes..
    The methodology.
[[If you think that water is a right to everyone and cannot be exclusive to Malaysia alone than may be you should let the Indonesians, the cats, the dogs, the rats to stay in your house after all the land beneath is owned by Allah for everyone to live]]
I did not says and I have no right of saying’s all these thing.
I only emphazised the right of equality that Allah gives all of us..Again..the methodology..
[[then let all Muslims give everything they own in the name of Islam and we will be left with naked bodies in the name of stupidity]]
Stupidity? Agreed very much with you but I did not concur’s..
I have told Mr Parameswara and I am telling you repeating the same equation..
Muslim’s must follow’s rule, law and regulation the way Islam permitted them to.And it all started in Islamic education. We have many disagreement today because we strayed from this basic education. When Mr Cherry learns Islam the way we do
( conventional ) you will see the light’s differently but at the same moment understands them from other point’s of view.Islam offers everything from “heaven and in between” contrasted by limited English comprehension stated that “everything under the sun” perception.
I echoes it again in this emphatic statement.Islam’s offer’s solutions. You need just only to look. And it did not help if you are bind by the comprehension of secular education..
Mr..they says’ it pains and hurtful when you broke the cherry..But the one who broke them can never understands but empathizes when the other party says…stop..stop..it hurts…But you still want’s to penetrate it is not so ?….:)
And I offer an approach to this methodology that is
    Brinkmanship
    Broke the cherry…Get it mister?..:)
    Thank you sir.
    Terima kasih Tun.

  13. Tun,

  14. Dear parameswara 2
Please read the book “The Malay Dilemma” by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, and try to find this letter called “Surat Dr. Mahathir kapada Tunku”, written in 1969, which was also mentioned in the recent Musikal, then you may understand better why we of my generation are different from you with regard to Tunku.

  15. Salam YABhg. Tun,
    1. Must we buy treated water from Singapore?
    2. Can we build a water treatment plant and sell treated water to Singapore at 50sen (or whatever price suitable), and not buy treated water from them anymore as we then will have our own water treatment plant?
    3. Is there a way the Government can prosecute or penalize those who drafted or approved such contracts that can be seen as demeaning to our Nation’s interest whether in short or long term.
    4. Weren’t there any basic templates or judgement present when drafting agreements that will protect our country’s interests?
Mind boggling on how such unfair contracts were approved e.g. highway concession included.
As rakyat of Malaysia, we need some insights on some of these topics.
    Thanks.
Selamat hari raya to you and family.

  17. Dearest Tun,
    1) Malaysia should win the bargain for more rather than for less. We have the resources and we dictate the price. Or, else Singapore can choose to drink their on new water, recycled from their own droppings!
    2) Singapore is lucky to have Malays as their neighbor. Malays are kind-hearted to allow Singapore enjoys its survival. Singapore wouldn’t have gotten such a good deal if the Malays are capitalist driven or kiasu minded.
    3) If Malaysia is in the state of Singapore today, I’m sure Singapore will not allow the current rate to continue. Singapore is capitalist driven. Every little dust is counted. If it has no mercy over the rights of the Bumis and Islam. What guarantee do we have that it will be fair and just if the advantage is theirs.
    4) I hope our leaders are able to stand firm on this issue. I’m sure Singapore is working hard getting into our turf to meddle with our decision making. We cannot allow water deal being corrupted on our soil!
    5) Please remember that we don’t need Singapore but they need us. So, there is no points of giving in too much too soon in respect to Singapore.
    6) Let them survive with their own droppings aka the new water. We no longer interested in selling any water to them. We need all the water that we have.
    7) Malaysia have help enough and we have lost enough! Game Over!
    Melayu itu hebat!

  21. YABhg Tun,
..just like to know whether the Johore Government or for that matter Malaysian Companies has interest in the company that process the water in Singapore….

  22. Ini bukan persoalan Kemanusian.
Air,keperluan manusia, begitu juga sekarang talipon bimbit juga keperluan manusia, sekarang.
Hanya sekiranya mereka, ditimpa musibah, barulah isu kemanusiaan timbul.
1.Kita mesti bersedia, jika mereka tak nak teruskan,
terserah mereka, kita tak akan rugi,Yg rugi apabila kita kasi mereka murah, dan mereka ambil kesempatan atas kemurahan kita.
2.Jangan kita rujuk pada mereka, biar mereka rujuk pada kita.
    3.Penjanjian baru mestilah,ikut semasa.
    Jangan lama sangat,5 tahun sekali,wajar.
Kalau keperluan kita adakan ERP,untuk air mengapa Tidak

  23. Salam
saya bersetuju sgt dgn ape yg diutarakan oleh saudara @6 Jahanam
    malah ingin saya tambah supaya:
*kerajaan pusat tolong buat water treatment plan kat JB supaya kita tidak perlu membeli air terawat daripada mereka; tolonglah deal jual 3sen dan beli 50sen nie SANGATLAH BODOH dan MERUGIKAN; CONFIRM ade yg makan untung atas deal nie
*pastu naik kan harga air mentah kpd SIN kepada sekurang-kurangnya >10 kali ganda 3–>30 sen takkan depa tak mampu kate Yahudi back up.
macam la depa nak treat air laut all the way. tak pandai pakai kelebihan ke wahai menteri menteri OI!!! nak masuk poket sendiri je pikir

  24. It is very obvious Malaysia is trying to bully Singapore. This is probably because of ‘Melayu Ketuanan’ or simply out of jealousy. The water agreement is not about 3 sen but Tun or Malaysia having the upperhand is using the supply of water as a stick to house train Singapore. They know that without Singapore’s initial investment, the water will flow into the rivers. Water is a gift from Allah.
This pattern of bullying is present in the bridge issue, the reclamation issue, the predra Branca, the KTM issue, the sand issue etc.
Why asked other countries not to supply sand to Singapore?
That is Mahathir, he does what he likes. Sometime his problem is that he takes himself too seriously and too self centred.
By all means negotiate a new Agreement. It is good economic sense for Malaysia and Singapore, otherwise the flood water will flow into the rivers and sea and All in Singapore will have to drink the more expensive NeWater.

  25. SALAM BAHAGIA TUN,
    ISU AIR YANG TUN KETENGAHKAN INI TELAH MEMBERIKAN SATU GAMBARAN YANG AMAT MENARIK TERHADAP SIKAP RAKYAT MALAYSIA. SECARA RINGKASNYA KITA DAPAT PERHATIKAN BAHAWA TERDAPAT DUA GOLONGAN MANUSIA/RAKYAT DIDALAM NEGARA INI;
PERTAMA: RAKYAT MALAYSIA YANG CINTAKAN NEGARA HANYA DIBIBIR SAHAJA. SEBALIKNYA RASA SIMPATI MALAHAN MUNGKIN SAYANG KEPADA NEGARA JIRAN -SINGAPURA, MELEBEHI DARI RASA SAYANGKAN MALAYSIA INI. MEREKA AKAN MEMPERTAHANKAN SEKIRA ADA PIHAK YANG MEMPERKECILKAN NEGARA JIRAN ITU. MEREKA MEMBANTAH SEKIRANYA TERDAPAT DASAR DAN KEPUTUSAN KERAJAAN YANG TIDAK MENYEBELAHI SINGAPURA – SIAPAKAH MEREKA MUNGKINA KITA SEMUA DAPAT RAMALKAN.
KEDUA: RAKYAT MALAYSIA YANG BENAR-BENAR CINTAKAN NEGARA INI. MEREKA YANG MERASAKAN HAK DAN MARWAH NEGARA MESTI DFIPERTAHANKAN DAN MENGANGGAP SINGAPURA HANYA SEBAGAI JIRAN. GOLONGAN INILAH YANG SEBENAR-BENARNYA AKAN MELINDUNGI DAN MEMPERTAHANKAN NEGARA JIKA KEADAAN MEMERLUKAN. SAYA PERCAYA KITA TAHU SIAPAKAH GOLONGAN INI.
OLEH ITU SEBAGAI SEBUAH KERAJAAN YANG DIPILIH OLEH RAKYAT LINDUNGILAH DAN UTAMAKANLAH MEREKA YANG BENAR-BENAR SAYANG DAN CINTAKAN NEGARA DALAM APA JUA URUSAN.
    MAZAI

  26. salam Tun,
I agree with you. I shall say it is timely that you would address this issue. I just hope that the current authorities would have started drafting new proposals years ago and just modify it according to our needs, especially the price which would need to take into account factors such as inflation.
What i understand from what Tun is trying to say is, it is foolish not to trade. Therefore we will supply when there is demand.
and will be more of a fool if we don’t put a profitable price tag.
Aside from the fact that Johor must build their own water treatment plant (or add more if it is not enough)

  27. Salam,
    ***Pandangan saya tentang Newater***
Saya bukan ahli kimia tak tahulah samada Newater ini dah ubah struktur molekul semulajadi air. Mana tau nanti muka manusia pun berubah kena banyak minum Newater!!!
    ***Singapura,Singapura****
Dalam masa 50 tahun Singapura dikatakan salah sebuah negara paling pantas maju. Tetapi yang sebenarnya Singapura mempunyai masa depan yang gelap. Percayalah gelap. Harga tanah, harga rumah melambung tinggi.

……. He and his partner David Marshall hated the Malays, and he knew how to make use of Tunku’s stupidity. After he got what he wanted, namely a country named Singapore, he said to Marshall, “Thank you David, this is a bloodless coup”.Yes, he cried, with tears in his eyes. He cried because he was so happy, and he got what he wanted, and he also made Tunku look like an idiot, giving away a Malay country just like that. Those days nobody dared to go against Tunku’s decision. Only Tun Dr. Ismail resigned from his political position. The others, like the late Khir Johari, went on dancing….#
    Dear Ahmad Badri
1-Please do not underestimate the wisdom of Tunku Abdul Rahman. If we Malaysians are enjoying the prosperity and harmony today it could not have happened without all the right things done by our leaders.Nothing happened in a vacuum.
2-You must understand that Malaysia is a strategic land dominated by Muslims where the West also have a lot of geopolitic and commercial interest in .You must ask the question, why did not the British hand over Singapore together with the other Straits Settlement to form Malaya in 1957.
3-The British have a lot of plans for this country only a fool would think will be in favor of the Malay Muslims. The British has no desire to give this country to the Malays.Due to then demographic situation and the economic strength of the Chinese through Lee Kuan Yew the political domination of Malaysia could have easily been won over by the Chinese.
4-Even if the Malays were to lose their cool and launch a civil war,WHO do you think the West/World be will be siding with, the Malays or the non Malays?Trust me,another Palestinian kind of conflict would be the order of the day.You see the situation of South East Asia is 100% the Middle East, you think up yourself.
5-Tunku could see this sort of possibility coming and being a truly bold leader that he was he took this hugely unpopular and extremely difficult decision unilaterally to kick Singapore out of the federation.Do you think any other leader would dare to take such a huge responsibilty all on his own?
6-Even the British were taken aback by this move. Its unprecedented in history Lee Kuan Yew himself didn’t expect. But the Tunku had no choice, its better to lose one small island to the Chinese rather to lose the whole of the country.
7-Can you imagine how tough the situation would be for the Malays if the Chinese population is as many as the Malays and when taking the Indian population into account the Malays are a clear minority? The Chinese is only about 27% of Malaysia now and we are already struggling…
8-There are many other strange leadership shown by Tunku. For example it is his idea to ensure the Malays remaining Muslims forever stipulated in the constitution. You know any other country like this?If the Tunku had not the wisdom he had only God knows what would have become of us Malays today.
9-What has happened has happened and nothing could change that. Its only best for us to be positive and give the benefit of the doubt to those who have already gone rather than to insult them out of our prejudice without true knowledge, and they not being able to defend themselves.Nonetheless only God knows best.
    Thanks Tun.

  29. Betul ke tak cerita ni..;
Penang still bayo RM1,000 setahun to Kedah sbb ada perjanjian antara Francis Light dgn Sultan Kedah dulu berkenaan daerah Seberang Perai. Dengar kata perjanjian ni berkuat-kuasa selama-lamanya…
Walaupun hal ni tak related dgn perjanjian air M’sia – S’pore, namun ia jelas menampakkan sifat org kita yg suka memberi dan tidak berfikir ke hadapan, dari dulu sampai sekarang.

  30. Salam Tun & Fellow Bloggers,
I may have missed one point regarding part of the agreement that require Johor to buy back the treated water. Yeh do we have to buy back the water if we considered it expensive? “Selling” is one part that we cannot change without their consent ( of being a KIASU why should I throw away that benefit them? ) but is there a law to force us to buy back? Why not just opt not to buy and look for other sources as options. Is there a trap to indicate that if we don’t buy then Singapore will get free water? What kind of agreement is this? Sorry for being ignorant on the terms of the agreement. BTW, is the agreement open to public or still under secrecy act?
That’s why we the people ( 1Malayians) should tell/ warn TSN that he must get public consent before signing any future agreement with that KIASU state. Being a Muslim TSN must be fully aware that ALLAH knows. Olih itu JANGAN PANDAI2 SENDIRI kalau nak bau syurga.
May Allah bless & protect us and show & guide our leaders the right path…. AMEEEN

  31. Salam Tun.
Cerita pasal air, saya nak kupas sikit isu air bersih kat negara kita. Senang sikit macam tu. Kalau ada macam tu pun kat hotel-hotel je. Kat rumah-rumah kita tak ada pulak. Kat rumah saya pun sekarang ni, nak minum air masak pun bertawakkal jer sebab dah dimasak pun kuning lagi. Tangki dirumah pun saya perlu bersihkan setiap 3 bulan sekurang-kurangnya.
Taulahkan, Singapura ni bab runding-runding ni pun dia pusing-pusing jugak. Silap-silap kita lagi rugi. Susah-susah, kerajaan Johor perlu berbelanja besar untuk mempunyai kilang merawat air sendiri. Mungkin rugi sikit sekarang ni. Tapi untuk anak-anak kita, tak perlulah berkira sangat. Kita pun dapat air yang bersih. Betul tak Tun.

Dont accuse anything yet. These are normal practices whether it is in China, USA, UK, Russia or any other big countries that you worships. Morons did that. Then you will know who is the real moron.

  33. Dear Ekompute
Why are we harping on the water agreement with Singapore when the Pahang River is discharging even more water into the South China Sea? How about collecting one sen per million gallons from China, or tell them we are going to rename it “Laut Melayu”.
You should wonder why we need money for food when tiger get free food?

    Sekian, harap maklum,

1-So Singapore is going to overtake us as the third largest economy in South East Asia. You tell Bloomberg indirectly its because the Malays are holding us back.Just because we Malays need the affirmative actions the Chinese and Indians all have to slow down. Its fair and square to you.Just because your favorite son uses crutches everybody else’s sons cannot run. Thanks Tun you make us Malays all feel so good.
2-20 years down the road Bloomberg will be interviewing former premier Tun Najib when Singapore’s economy about to become double our economy. He will also coolly tell the Malays were the cause of the slow growth vis-a-vis Singapore.Tun got away with that so he reckoned so will he.
3-There is nothing wrong with them as the leaders, just the Malays. The saying that when a fish stinks it stinks from the head is unheard of by them.To them there is only one way of doing things, their way, which their kaki ampu surrounding them will them is perfect and World class.
4-If my staff were to give this kind of an excuse I’d ask them to resign immediately before I give them the boot. You are the one doing the wrong things and you dare blame it on others. All they think about are the Malays (or their cronies)as though the other people of this country has no feelings or substance whatsoever.
5-I will assure you that nothing’s ever gonna change Tun come another 100 years. The Chinese of Malaysia will only be more and more ahead of us.Singapore is part of their bamboo network. The stronger Singapore becomes so too will they.
6-In fact they are partly behind Singapore’s strength. So the way we are doing things now only benefit Singapore. The Chinese are unstoppable,if we Malaysians don’t help them others will.At the moment Singapore is the lucky beneficiary of Malaysia’s foolishness.
7-The only way out Tun is my two Malaysia temporarily broken up into a Malay Malaysia and a non Malay Malaysia. At least we can provide a strategic centre somewhere as big as the whole of Klang Valley already dominated by them but not yet developed so that the Malays can’t be complaining too much. How about the whole of Kinta Valley centred at my my most undeveloped rotting Ipoh City to be the non Malay Malaysia? Its already China there anyway.Just time to formalize it now.
8-Please think about our Malay pride Tun.Don’t let the other races hate us for keeping this nation behind our dynamic Singapore. At least while we seriously attempt to correct our shortcomings we let those who are not using crutches to run as fast as nature has made them to run.
9-Two Malaysia only as a temporary move before we merge up as One Malaysia after the Malays have been rehabilitated. You like it or not Tun this is the only way. There is no other way.I guarantee you!
    Thanks Tun.

  37. Assalamu Alaikum Tun,
You are right. The current deal shows how generous Malaysian are to its neighbouring country. We hope Singapore in turn will show its appreciation by agreeing to terms that fair to the Malaysian part especially the state of Johor.

  38. Untuk memajukan Malaysia,
    Kita mesti membenteras Rasuah.
Kena hampuskan musuh dalaman sebelum kita hampuskan musuh luar.
    Beliau hanya mewakili bukan memiliki.
Sekiranya itu hak bapak beliau, itu hak berliau.
    Rakyat berhak bersuara.
Yakinlah Singapura, adalah jiran yg tak bolih dipercayai.
Lambat laun mereka nak menguasai kita, setelah kita beberapa kali
dihina kerajaan mereka.Soal meritrocrasy, perkauman dan sebagainya.
Meraka berbuat demikian untuk mengocar kacirkan kita bersama.
Melemahkan kemantapan UMNO,justeru senang mereka ambil kesempatan.
Seperti juga US,yg mengocar kacirkan perkauman di IRAQ,menghasut Pakisatan untuk pangkalan serang Afganistan, bertujuan memporak perandakan kita bersama justeru mudah bagi mereka menguasi tujuan mereka.
    Berjuanglah Melayu.
TAK PERLU KITA JELAJAH,KITA HANYA WAJIB MEMPERTAHANKAN HAK KITA.
    Berjimat semasa berada,
dah tak ada,apa yg nak dijimatkan lagi.
    Berjagalah sebelum terkena.

  39. Why are we harping on the water agreement with Singapore when the Pahang River is discharging even more water into the South China Sea? How about collecting one sen per million gallons from China, or tell them we are going to rename it “Laut Melayu”.
You should first ask why we need money to buy food when even tiger can get free food?

  40. Salam tun/all
Kalau tak boleh dapat better deal then jual je kat Singapre waste water not raw water .
    Chedet Bodoh.

  41. Just looking from another angle :
    1. Look at the bigger picture, the gains and losses of the various bargaining options – emotions aside.
    2. Is Singapore condemned to be eternally dependent on our water? Or, will they one day say “We are not going to supply treated water to you any more as we no longer need your raw water?”
3.Singapore negotiators (including their PM) are paid much more than ours, hence they deserve the better deal.
    4. Of course, it is safer, and maybe more rewarding, to please every one (including Obama, Clinton and Singapore) rather than to be branded as a ‘recalcitrant’ nuisance.

  42. QUOTE: “4.
Tun, I thought you had wanted RM3 per 1,000 gallons. So why talk about 6 sen now. Such big disparity in price proposal doesn’t make sense. Why not just tell them RM300 per gallon, take it or leave it… after all, as you said, we are not interested in selling water to Singapore.

#8. Whatever, in 2011, a new agreement to supply Singapore with raw water from Johore may have to be made, I think that despite Singapore’s desalination plant, despite Newater, and new reservoirs, Singapore would still need raw water from Johore. We should be willing to supply the people of Singapore with raw water.#
1-Tun why should we be willing to supply the people of Singapore with raw water? You mean to say this wee poor country cannot afford to buy treated water?Or are you saying we do not have the technology to treat water?High income economy wannabe don’t have water treatment technology..?
2-The principle is so basic.Water is the most critical and precious of all commodities to the survival of mankind and we just can’t let other people to control it esp when we are the ones afforded the raw water. Its different if we had no choice as beggars cannot choose.Since Singapore Tun said is the one who need it,they are the one in the beggar shoes..yet it strangely appears Singapore is the colonial master and Malaysia it’s colony.
3-I wonder if there is any country in this world willing to supply raw water to someone else to treat and then sell it back and have an upper hand on us? Would Singapore sell its raw water and and buy treated water from us.Why not? Because Singapore is not stupid ma.
4-Please Tun stop all these nonsense,we must not renew the agreement at all cost.We must treat our own water and if anybody wants it too it must buy only treated water from us.Start building these water treatment plants soonest possible.
5-Since Singapore has also told the world that it has no intention of depending on our raw water there is really no issue at all.So there really is no need for us to be supplying raw water to Singapore.Strange why you think there is a need.
6-Should it change its mind later we can only offer our waste water at the same price we sell the raw water in the past and remind them that this is a special offer because they have been such a nice neighbor to us.Remind them also that this offer is only while stock last.
7-If they want our treated water we sell at a neighborly price of 60 sen per 1000 gallon.Take it or leave it.Don’t negotiate they will play us out again.Lets admit it they may not be the smarter guys.Only our people are the corrupted ones.
8-Oh proud to be Malaysian. Thanks Tun.

  44. From my opinion, let the water price issue be gone because Singapore have no plan to fight for water from Malaysia anymore. When the first out of two old agreements end next year, they Singapore may already meet their 50% self sufficient water supply. Then when the second water agreement from Malaysia end more years to come, they are planning to totally achieve the 100% need water production, or maybe end up having more water than serving their need.
The next future issue would be Johor alone. Either Johor want to:
    (1) no selling but continue buying the sure-high-price treated water from Singapore or
    (2) seek for Singapore courtesy to help treat the Johor water
    (3) bough the water from other Malaysia state or
    (4) process their own water

  45. Salam Tun,
Morons running this country? The guy who said this is simply brilliant but a slowcoach. All his equally brilliant compatriots were already gone for good, why is he still around is beyond comprehension to us mere (moronic?) mortals who have no choice but to stay here in moronic Malaysia.
Then, theres this “curryayam” (of all the nicks he can choose) who asked Tun to stop harping on these watery issues, and perhaps many other issues in past postings. People throw their curryayams into the bogs where it belongs if they don’t like it. Similarly, why hang around Tun’s blog if you can’t stomach whatever he has to say.
Somebody else sounds stupid when he tried to be funny (sarcastic?) with his “Laut Melayu” jibe.
Theres another hostile “old” fart who pines for LKY’s brand of dictatorship here in Malaysia. No chance. And don’t bother waiting for Penang to get its autonomy either. It won’t happen anytime soon or ever (morons sometimes and to your chagrin, do unexpectedly and in their twisted way learn their lesson, you know…!).
The morons running this country gonna run this country their moronic way, nothing you can do about it, not even by trying to outvote or vote them out. As a result, you guys will eventually do as the Malays of old said (translated):”They came uninvited, they ran off unasked”, with tails between their legs, I may add. Brains drain, goes the old cliche…. who cares? Its better to have around happy morons rather than unhappy supergeniuses….who can invent all sorts of incendiary materials…well, you can imagine the rest……!
Its an oxymoron isn’t it….you clever guys continuing to stay here, given the shoddy treatment you’re getting since times immemorial. You don’t deserve it, do you? But then anywhere you go, even in civilized UK, the natives treat you shoddy…why? Could be the supergene you carry around, with which you outsmart the natives in anything you choose to do…and the natives being moronic lazier-than-thou savages, don’t know any better…don’t know what else to do but treat you shoddy.
Hmmm…where else to go then? Back to the grand old country which grandad used to abandon? Naw, too straitjacketed, can’t say anything you like, like you do here in Tun’s blog? Singapore? LKY only wants the “creme de la creme”, and you happened to be just outside that top 0.5%. Furthermore its too small. Claustrophobically too demanding. Also, you are just another ordinary clever guys amongst too many clever guys around. Can’t feel superior over anybody except those few natives still lazying around, a little less lazy though compared to us in Malaysia.
Don’t be disheartened. Theres Hong Kong, Australia, NZ, USA….so many to choose from, what. I know, Japan is simply out-of-bound. Wonder why though. They can’t be too clever by-half, can they…those japs, compared to you guys. Hahaha!

  46. YABhg Tun,
    Kita ni amat baaik hati…
Seorang kawan Tionghua saya pernah berkata, manusia hidup atas 4 elemen penting…
Api – kita dah salurkan gas kat sepa…
Air – memang Tun dah ulas kat atas ni…
    Angin – ruang udara kita…?

Sekarang Dunia bereconomy Antara Bangsa,Global Economy.
Jangan kita pandang air kita yg melimpah tak berharga.
Maka itu kita harus menilaikannya dengan $$$$$$.
    Mengapa kita harus kasi murah.

    Ini persoalan Perdagangan.
    Isu Kemanusian TIDAK WUJUD disini.

[[Now are we supposed to send more and more water to Singapore? What if they bring in 2 million more immigrants? Sell them a piece of Johor?]]
Sir..I had the impression that you implied that we owned the water.Meaning Allah resources in Johor that flows away to the sea.
I believes that you meant that we are rightful owner to this source.
Meaning we have the right to gives or denies anyone that not in the same view with us.Now..
How about using a bit analogy from the middle east? From the “hated” Israel?
I have been informed that once the water sources in the middle east belongs to the palestinian. In form of wetlands and what not the palestinian does not use them effectively..Can you imagined..In the middle of the desert?
So..When the Israelis got hand of this ‘waste not want not land’ full of the resources, they began to developed the water sources and suprise..suprise they did not hold back or choked the palestinian the source of the water..That is what I gathered..Maybe I am wrong and stand to be corrected..
    The moral of the story?
Islam means peace. We promotes peace.Allah blessed us with this water as resources. Are we going to denied Allah resources because the end of the knife is pointed to other direction?
I have a lot things that disagrees with singaporean..kiasu and whatsoever..But Islam does not approves the strangulation of basic need of resources of whatever mean.
We disagrees with the methodology of sharing. Not the right. And we have no right whatsoever to denies this basic right even in the
named of preventing the spawn of “accumulation the real and possible enemies”..
    Thank you sir.
    Terima kasih Tun.

Nasihat saya, jangan sampai Tun naik angin.

  51. Salam Tun
You have been writing on this water issue so many times. I am begining to wonder what are your real intention.
You have been PM for 22 years. During this period you had the chance to vary the contract as provided for in the water agreement and you choose not to do it. Only you could explain the reason.
You also agree with LKY to raise the raw water price. You shook hands but a few months later, you reneged on your agreement. You up the ante but Singapore never blink and walk away and decided to allow the 2011 agreement to lapse. You assumed that Singapore will be on it’s knee, but you didn’t know they have Newwater as well the the Marina Barage and many new reservoirs from dammed rivers that will provide the extra water needed.
So Tun, please on harp on this issue anymore. Stop flogging a dead horse. You had 22 years of opportunity to put thing right. Stop blaming the leaders before and after you.
But if you are using this issue to divert attention from your recent Perkasa postings, then I can understand. But a man of your calibre should spend more time to improve racial harmony of this country. What this country need is nation buiding, blaming others for failures is really a waste of your talent.

  52. Good morning Ayahanda Tun,

  53. Assalamualaikum Tun
    Sekian, wassalam.

  54. Why are we harping on the water agreement with Singapore when the Pahang River is discharging even more water into the South China Sea? How about collecting one sen per million gallons from China, or tell them we are going to rename it “Laut Melayu”.

  55. Salam Tun & Felow bloggers,
Dari komen2 dalam blog ini, nyata ramai yg marah, kecewa, confused and wondering “how come”? Itulah jadinya kalau kita pilih pemimpin2 “half pass 6” – inilah yg dikatakan yang bodoh tak bolih diajar dan tak mahu belajar dan pandai yang tak bolih kita ikut, berlagak sombong pula. Melayu “Islam”, khatam quran tapi tak paham satu apa pun.

  56. Dearest Tun,
In my humble opinion, instead of talking about “agreement”, “money” etc. all the time when dealing with our closest neighbour, I would suggest we propose to give them the water for free, but, in return, ask them what they could give us in return for that goodwill. Who knows, they may have something very valuable or meaningful install for us.
If both gov can think out of the box, they may win the hearts of their people during election times.
I would suggest we start by removing our boarders, just like the EU.
If we set a successful example, other countries in this region may follow suit. At that time, we can build a bridge all the way to Jakarta via Singapore.
Not everything must be measured in terms of money. Sometimes, the welfare of the people matters most.

  57. Salam Tun,

  59. My Salam to Tun and Tun Dr Hasmah.
Someone said unqualified morons are running this country.
We don’t have morons running this country. We only have ungrateful citizens who glorify other leaders who are racist to the core.
In a neighboring country, if you are not ‘one of them’ you cannot be a fighter pilot, cannot be a judge, cannot be a pistol packing policeman and certainly never a military officer.
In Malaysia anyone can go up. We had a Chinese Chief Justice, two Chinese Ministers of Finance, a Punjabi Chief Justice and several non Malay ambassodors.
And we have an idiot who says morons are running this country.
Thank you Tun. I pray that you and Tun Dr Hasmah are both blessed with good health.

  60. Simple. Malaysians negotiators are either corrupted or they are simply “dungus”. Lets see who would be the negotiators to represent Malaysia. Hopefully, they know all facts ready and what would be the implications on whatever they agree in the new terms of the agreement.

  61. One more thing too share, learn from Penang State.
The state lead by DAP now.
The one of the most efficient and well manage Water Supply Board.
    Annually making millions in Ringgit.
The rate is the cheapest of 15Kliter only 2.50Ringgit only.
While Kedah sells very cheap raw to Penang.
By the way, Penang water quality are one of the best in Malaysia.
Unlike Kedah treated water, which is full with yellowish sediments.
Why, we inherited a very well built and reliable treatment systems from our former Tuan British.
The current Tuan, were lesser capable in water treatment.

  62. Salam YB Tun,
Ingat pasukan (team) terdiri daipada siapa.
    Wasalam.

  63. Malaysia on the whole have never been drought stricken except maybe in the northern states. It rain almost every week as met. station says “disana sini” AND yet there is no water in the tap. ” diesel in the river, water too polluted to be use, leacheate from dump sites etc etc” WHY?…..poor planning, no strategy, not enough budget allocation? in rain retention schemes. All streams and rivers in urban areas are concreted… flood mitigation konon2nya. Think….. where is the rain water going to go in Klang valley; straight into seas within the hours. The so call wet land near PutraJaya are already criss-crossed with roads and soon development will take over with no water to be retained.(sic)Who cares for the future generations as long as I make a fast buck. Almost all forest reserve in Selangor are gone. I am not surprise at the rate we are going we could start buying water from Thailand in the near future. Trans water pipe from Thailand to industrial states in Malaysia. Think of the commission from such mega projects.

  64. Hi Tun,
You said ‘I am told that for reasons unknown, despite building its own treatment plant Johore is still buying treated water from Singapore’
What reasons UNKONOW, I only know the word CORRUPTION !!!!
and it’s during your tenant as PM.

  65. Dear Sir & Fellow Che Det bloggers,
Please allow me to add a few more comments.
First, whoever had the idea that Singapore was “expelled” from Malaysia is dead wrong. Lee Kuan Yew, whom some people refer to as the cunning fox, had always wanted to get Singapore for himself. The others, like the late Khir Johari, went on dancing.
Then Lee went around to USA and Europe and spread the news that Singapore was a small tiny nation, surrounded by over a hundred million Malay Muslims, just like Israel. He needed “protection”. So he became Israel’s good friend in Southeast Asia. Yes he is smart indeed.
Then the last ten years he encouraged new immigrants, mainly Chinese, to become new Singapore citizens. Within the last ten years the population of Singapore increased by over 2.5 million. And of course they need more water. Now there are more than 5 million Singaporeans.
Now are we supposed to send more and more water to Singapore? What if they bring in 2 million more immigrants? Sell them a piece of Johor?
They can get water from any sources they want, recycled urine and sewage, desalination of seawater, whatever, it’s up to them. We Malaysian have no obligations to support their greed, gluttony, and live up to their ungrateful attitude.
Their strength and advantage is the Singapore dollar which they can use to bribe corrupted Malaysian politicians and officers. This matter, Mr Chua S.L., should be included into the new Malaysian history curriculum.

  66. To Autoboy.
Sorry, my bad. but i am wondering why you still want to sell the water to singapore??? love to be bullied again? or lesson never learn?
on what benefits we can get by selling raw water to singapore? to be bullied again?
we know our weakness, to get bully by singapore. example pulau batu putih.. good one. remember that? how to mitigate not to get bully? avoid them. never learn that at school?
i wrote my first comments that way because of 2 cases
    a) Pulau batu putih. nobody in johore really cares. so PM no 5 can sleep well at night.
    b) Jambatan Bengkok. Johorean dont want it claimed by PM no 5. It seem true becoz even in so many blog i have join so far, johorean never bother about Jambatan bengkok.
based on the above still want to blame the Government? it didn’t make sense right.
    well you know.

  67. Salam buat Tun dan semua pembaca
    Mohon laluan Tun…
    Terima kasih Tun….
    HANAMARU

  68. Assalamu’alaikum Tun,
    terimakasih Tun.

“LET FORGET IT ABOUT SUPPLYING WATER TO SINGAPURA”

  70. Guys – the first thing to do before commenting is understanding the issue and facts.
The fact is – Singapore does not want to renew the water agreement ending 2011 and has already announced to the whole world.
So, for those who are still asking for better prices, like TDM, and many others – you are barking up the wrong tree.

  71. Salamsejahtera Tun.
Tun apasal lah Malaysia jadi begini rupa setelah Tun melepaskan jawatan,
    kecewa benar lah Tun,

Apapun, mestilah menguntungkan negara. Jangan termasuk lagi lubang taik untuk kali kedua. Sebelum tandatangani perjanjian, baca betul-betul. Kalau tak faham, jangan tandatangan dulu, mintalah nasihat.

  75. Asalamualaikum Tun yg di hormati…
Thnx 4 highlighting this matter again… if u do not continously brought up this matter then ppl r tend to forget… as what u said “Melayu mudah lupa” in this case the Govt of Johor yg mudah lupa… pembaziran wang cukai rakyat ke Singapura setiap tahun harus di halang. Ramai Johorean yg bijak pandai knows abt this… the prob is… they do not have power and proper channel to voice out their opinion.
If the Govt of Johor still following the Singaporean needs… i m not surprise if the rakyat change their State Govt in the nxt PRU13. The Johor Govt pls dont be soooo stupid, be a wise Govt and get your respect from the ppl again.
Dont let Malaysian pay for the water Singapura bought. Lebih baik Johor bagi air percuma pd Singapura and get free water back from Singapura…and dont forget beri free water back to rakyat is much cheaper the paying to Singapura.

  76. Dear Tun Dr M,
I do agree with your stance on the raw water dealing between Johor (Malaysia) and Singapore. The rate of RM0.03 per 1,000 gallon supply of raw water from Johor is ridiculously low. Of course, they could cite the agreement between our forefathers and that of Singapore and would want to strictly follow that. Just because our past leaders have

  77. Assalaamualaikum Tun.
Pak Lah mesti sedar.Bukan kerana rakyat menolak BN.
    Terima kasih
Tun may Allah bless you for your guidance. Amiin

  78. Dear Tun,
I think it would not be unreasonable to sell water to Singapore at 30 sen per 1,000 gallons if that is the price Johor is charging Melaka. Singapore can sell it back treated at whatever price it thinks is fair and if that is too expensive then it will start making economic sense for Johor to start treating its own water to fulfill all its needs.
Water is a limited commodity. If there will be challenges adequately supplying even the Klang Valley in the future from the other states then Singapore will have to be prepared to pay the market rate for it. This would have been the case even if Singapore remained part of Malaysia.
Johor will also need more water to develop the Iskandar region. Singapore should theoretically have no objections to that. Prosper thy neighbour after all.
As to why we tend to sign lopsided agreements there are rumours that a certain photo could be the cause. I do not believe this rumour at all though as even though Brunei is not purported to own similar photos we still signed apparently lopsided agreements as regards oil fields and Limbang with them.

  79. Salam Tun and fellow bloggers,
    1. I’m looking from other perspective when this water (or other issues later)agreement is concerned. These are about;
    – singapore showing the world that they’re great, cos they will win in everything, thanx to their kiasu upbringing!
    – singapore showing the weaknesses of the malays (from
malaysia) and the malays in singapore can reinforce their
own beliefs that malays are inferior, stupid, ineffective,
inefficient, etc. This is important for long term
measures. I guess that explains why not many non-malay
bloggers are disturbed by this issue – cos the4y have common
enemies, the malays. This is about sovereignity, why are
they keeping quiet? Cut my finger if DAP will take up this
issue, I mean defending our country.
    – stupid PTD officers representing us in the meeting, for not
    having bright ideas, but….
    – their handlers, holding their leashes, ARE the political
masters! When Tun decided to stand firm, everybody follows,
but c Dollah tried to play smart but actually stupid,
everybody followed him too. So now, Najib will make the
call. Looking at what’s going on, I think Najib will please
    singapore.
SO U SEE, THIS IS ABOUT THE MALAYS’ MARUAH, NOT SO MUCH ABOUT KEDAULATAN. IF NOT THE NON-MALAYS WILL JOIN IN THE CALL FOR 1MALAYSIA AGAINST BULLY SINGAPORE, RIGHT?
it’s the same, no balls now will mean no balls in future too, especially when our manja kids run the country, alahai….

  80. On hindsight, at the height of the nation’s will during Tun’s supremacy we could have get on with the water processing plant in Johore in superb running condition to supply more than enough water for the southern region. Alas, we are now whimpish.
Strategically, it would of course overshadow the twin towers in terms of satisfaction to the rakyat, honing of local expertise, and lastly and not the least our bargaining power. I do not see the cards on our sleeves. The present and past leaderships are/were mired in trial and error priorities notwithstanding the flip-flopping.
We are a small country that talk big. Indah khabar dari rupa. Cakap tak serupa bikin. That is why we are being taught one shameful lesson after by smaller neighbours the likes of Brunei and Singapore. What do we expect from bigger countries? They just bully us.
If we really want to make money we can sell recycle water if they want it to make newater! The herring-bone pipeline arrangement could very well channel recycle water right from Perlis to inundate the whole of Singapore.
Talking about inundation, is the rising sea water level due to climate change shrinking the island! Aha, that is the reason they want sand!!

    Sama-samalah kita tunggu dan lihat.

  82. to tuntuah;
use your words wisely. don’t said johorean not understand or stupid or &^#*%^&(). u r hurting us u know. Instead, said that “the government are not understand or are they just stupid?”. They are the one who make the decision, our voice are still not strong enough to reach their big ears.
btw your idea for not selling any water to singapore are just don’t have a basis. Johore should sell a water to them with a higher price. That was possible if they develop their own water treatment plant. Then from the profit, they can use it for the people and development of Johore.

  83. 1.Sekarang kita pendekan agreement term 5 tahun 1 kali
    Renewal agreement.5 Tahun runding lagi.
2.Harga kalau kita naik 1 ringgit,
datang dia samalah.Tak payah runding lagi.
    Nak, TakNak, Taknak,Sua.
Jangan nak binggungkan dengan cerita lain.
    3.Jangan risau,mereka pasti nak lagi.
Jika mereka tak nak,ok lah.Apa 3c bolih hasilkan kita.
4.Seperti yg Menteri Benggap Johor,yg tak nak ambil
    Penonggang motorcycle kita,belum makan pagi,
dah kena bayar levy $4 dolar.Ini bolih buat makan tengah hari.
5.Kita melawat mereka di buat macam banduan.
Ada kawan saya yg banyak kali dihalau pulang.
Rokok bawa 2 batang pun tak bolih, bolih kena saman, macam perompak.
Tak pernah saya dengar orang Jepun,Amerika kena saman fasal rokok.
Mereka datang sini macam rumah mereka, tak di halang, malah
kebanyakkan mereka berurusan disini, seharusnya ada professional work levy.
Saya hairan Kerajaan Melayu yg dinamakan Islam,
duit halal seperti hak mencukai tak nak ambil,
mereka lebih seronok makan duit rasuah, duit haram.
    Hai Kassim,ampunkan mak,Kassim
    Mak bersalah,ampunkan mak Kassim

  84. Salam Tun,
I do not see the rationale in selling raw water to Singapore at the mentioned rate and thereafter buying back treated water at a premium price for Johore citizens to consume and bear a high tariff. Why can’t the Johore government set up their own water treatment plant for long term solution. Johore should not be dependant on Singapore for treated water forever. Is this such a big problem for Johore government to understand. The PM has always stress on innovation and yet we do not make wise decisions and actions. Wonder whats wrong with the system or the leaders?

  85. Selangor pun wujudnya masalah air dengan Syabas …. tapi Tun diam diam tak berbunyi pun …
pasal isu air dengan Singapura, cerita sikit tapi tak cerita yang sebenarnya … mengelirukan saja orang …

  86. YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir
As usual, Your point is spot on.
As a Muslim, I love Malaysia and Love its accomplishments.

Singapore Seen Overtaking Malaysia 45 Years After Lee’s Tears

    Forty-five years after Singapore

  87. Sekira Menteri mana,Pegawai mana,Siapa jua
yg tak tahu nak berunding sama Kerajaan Singapura,
dengan memberi harga 3c,serupa memberi percuma.
Saya cadangkan, kita suruh budak Tadika, atau pelajar Menengah
    berunding dengan Kerajaan Singapura.
Jimat juga gaji Menteri, kasi budak budak 50ringgit pun dah besar, apa.Mesti budak budak ni setuju.
Tak apa pakaikan mereka kot dan tie.
Nak berunding dengan urusan luar mesti kemas.
    Apa pandangan Tun

  88. what we can do if the people of johor are so generous of giving up cheap water and land to the singaporean…

  89. Dear Tun,
We can’t fault the Singapore party/negotiators, as it is their right to go in for what is best for their National Interest. And mind you getting cheap raw water is of utmost important to Singapore’s survival.
At the same time we must get the best mix of negotiators who will go for what is best for Malaysia and Johor. Here is a potential problem..reconciling the interest of both Malaysia as a nation and Johor. We need to work this out first and early to derive (sub-negotiations) at an aggreable common goal before the real negotiations.
Then we need the best legal minds to work as a team for the negotiations. Please DO NOT leave it to the politicans….to negotiate.
For Malaysia the BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) looks stronger than Singapore’s…we can live with out the agreement but for Singapore it can be a matter of life and death.
    So guys..go for it.

  90. Salam TUN && ALL,
    “NEGARA KITA, TANGGUNGJAWAB BERSAMA”
    Terima kasih.
    EMMA~
    *** sorry, lari topic lagie… =))

  91. IT IS WITH EXAMPLES LIKE THESE, THAT MALAYSIA STANDS OUT LIKE A STUPID CHILDISH NEGOTIATOR. MALAYSIA NEEDS COMPETENT PEOPLE AND LEADERSHIP THAT CAN PROFESSIONALLY NEGOTIATE TERMS AND AGREEMENTS IN ITS BENEFIT – UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE NO SUCH PEOPLE. WE LOST PULAU BATU PUTEH BECAUSE OF A BAD TEAM LEAD BY A BAD GHANI PATIL. THEN WE HAD TO STOP ALL WORK AND NEGOTIATIONS ON THE STRAITS BRIDGE. THERE ARE TOO MANY EXAMPLES WHERE MALAYSIA IS SIMPLY NOT UP TO THE TASK OF DEFENDING ITS INTERESTS!

    6. Alm-ost 10 years ago Johor was allocated sufficient money to build its own treatment plant so as not to buy treated water from Singapore. I am told that for reasons unknown, despite building its own treatment plant Johore is still buying treated water from Singapore.

Kalau kerajaan negeri sendiri tak transparent dgn kerajaan pusat (PM sendiri tak tau), sesama BN pulak tu, tak payah la laung2kan slogan KETELUSAN.
Saya harap lepas ni Tun jangan lagi buat statement bunyi mcm salahkan orang lain. Bagilah cerita yg menjawab isu, merungkai masalah.

  93. Dear Sir, and fellow Che Det bloggers,
The Singapore government has stated that it will not renew the 1961 agreement which expires in 2011. So what more is there to negotiate about? If Johor has excess raw water and need the money, then Melaka, Negeri 9 and even Selangor also need to buy water. You can always use the PLUS highway to build the pipeline to transfer the water.
The only one thing to negotiate about is the Johor River Water Agreement, signed on 29th September 1962 between the Singapore City Council and the Johor State Government, valid for 99 years up till 2061. We have to wait about 50 years more to negotiate on that, which has to be done by our children or grandchildren, because by them all of us Che Det bloggers will be dead.
The best thing is to teach our children and grandchildren the following:
    1. Never trust the Singaporeans.
    2. Don

  94. Salam minta lalu Tun M,

  95. asalamualaikum
Apa nak buat nasi dah jadi bubur……
Mengapa agaknya…? UMNO saya rasa dah sejak saya lahir tahun 1969 memerintah Johor…. if PKR memerintah boleh ok ker? tu pon tak tau… saya rasa bukan masalah parti politik di sini. Tetapi masalah pemimpin dalam menguruskan negara/negeri…Tun mengapa agaknya…

  96. YAB Tun,
Setelah meneliti komentar pembaca, saya ingin membuat ulasan tambahan seperti berikut:

  97. Salam Tun,
Why on earth should Johor buy water from Singapore AT ALL ?
( Tepuk dahi, terduduk atas kerusi, termenung kelangit )

  98. Salam Tun
    Singapore-Malaysia water agreements
Singapore and Malaysia have signed four agreements to regulate the supply of water from Malaysia to Singapore. The first – signed in 1927 – is no longer in force. Water imported from Malaysia under the other three agreements – signed in 1961,1962 and 1990 – now meets about half of Singapore’s water demand. However, this will be reduced after the 1961 pact expires in 2011. The government has also stated that Singapore can be self-sufficient in water by the time the 1962 and 1990 agreements expire in 2061.
    1927 Agreement
This was signed on 5 December 1927 between the municipal commissioners of the town of Singapore and Sultan Ibrahim of the state and territories of Johor – is no longer in force.
    1961 Agreement
This was called the Tebrau and Scudai Rivers Water Agreement. It was signed on 1 September 1961 between the city council of the state of Singapore (the predecessor of the Public Utilities Board or PUB) and the government of the state of Johor. By then, Singapore was a self-governing state within the British empire while Malaya was already an independent nation. The 1927 agreement was declared void in this document.
The agreement gave Singapore the full and exclusive right to draw off all the water within the designated land at Gunong Pulai, Sungei Tebrau and Sungei Scudai for a period of 50 years up till 2011. Singapore was to pay an annual rent of $5 per acre for the land and a charge of 3 cents for every 1,000 gallons of water. Singapore also agreed to provide Johor with a daily supply of treated water up to 12% of the raw water it drew, subject to a minimum of four million gallons (18,184m3), and at a price of 50 cents per 1,000 gallons.
    1990 Agreement
This was signed on 24 November 1990 between PUB and the Johor state government. It was supplementary to the 1962 pact and would also expire in 2061. A separate document was signed on the same day by the governments of Malaysia and Singapore to guarantee adherence to the agreement.
    Beyond 2061
    Wassalam

  99. Just dont sell any water to Singapore. period.
sell it to melaka at a lower price say 10cents in which johor will make 100% profit.
is that so hard for johorean to understand or they just stupid?

Kesilapan dulu menyebabkan rakyat Johor rugi. Jika perjanjian semula air 2011 tidak menguntungkan rakyat Johor, maka setujukah Tun agar BN dihukum pada PRU13 nanti?

  101. Selamat Pagi and Sejahthera Tun,
According to Tun simulation, if Malaysia increased 100% of the selling price per gallon raw water to 6 sen and Singapore increased 100% of its selling price per gallon treatment water to 100 sen, then the below loss to Malaysia will happen:
    1) Malaysia will gain (100% x 3 =) 3 sen per every gallon raw water sell.
    2) Singapore will gain (12% x 50 =) 6 sen per every equivalent water purchased from Malaysia.
Therefore, if Malaysia sell 1 billion gallon raw water in a year, Malaysia will get additional RM30,000,000 while Singapore will gain additional 60,000,000 from its treatment water sell back to Malaysia. The net loss to Malaysia will be RM30,000,000. But if the total water involve is 10 billion, then the net estimated loss will be RM300,000,000. So the total amount of loss will depend on how much water involve.
Therefore, if Malaysia decided to increase 3 sen to 6 sen per every gallon raw water sell, then Malaysia should not buy back the treatment water that cause more than 75 sen. Any purchase price more than 75 sen per gallon treatment water will cause a net loss to Malaysia. Below example prove this understanding:
    1) Malaysia will gain (100% x 3 =) 3 sen per every gallon raw water sell.
    2) Singapore will gain (12% x 25 =) 3 sen per every equivalent water purchased from Malaysia.
It seems like Tun is making an assumption that

  102. Tun begitulah sikap Melayu,
    MAZAI

  103. Assalam mualaikum
    Dear Tun,
As you mentioned, this time around the Federal as well as the State Governments shoud not be generous nor overly helpful to our southern neigbor. Not only regarding water but anything and everything Msians owned should be negotiate on a win-win basis.
Correct me if i am wrong..I was tild the KTMB lands in Singapore has a 999 years lease and this was exchange for some parcels of land in the Marina Bay area which only has a 99 year lease !! If this is true, then our Government should rescind the agrrement to hand the KTMB land back to the Spore Government.

  104. Dear Tun,
    1. You say that Singapore supplies Malaysians with treated water at the price of 50 sen per 1000 gallons.
    2. This equates to 13.20sen per cubic meter. (1,000 Gallons = 3.78541178 Cubic Meters)
    See http://www.asknumbers.com/gallon-to-cubic-meter.aspx
    3. In Selangor, water treatment operators sell treated water to Syabas from the FREE water they get from Sungai Selangor at RM 1.30 per cubic meter.
    See http://sos-selangor.org/?page_id=2
    4. This is 10x the price that Singapore sells treated water to Malaysians.
    5. Syabas then sells this water to consumers and industry at up to RM 2.00 per cubic meter.
    See http://www.syabas.com.my/mainservice.php?pg_post=3&pg_id=4&menu_id2=5
    6. These water treatment concessions were given when your Barisan Nasional was in charge of the State of Selangor. I believe that you must have been aware of these costs while you were Prime Minister.
    7. I say that if Singapore can supply Malaysia with treated water at 1/10th the price that some of these water treatment operators do, we should continue to buy from this foreign country them at that price as we are clearly getting a bargain compared to the others.
    8. I hope see the wisdon of this economic logic.
    Kamali Ibrahim

  105. Salam Tun.
At last we can now look forward and anticipate good/better deals to all negotiations with other countries, especially on the water issue with Singapura.
Gone were the days of the incompetent & ever-lying flip-flop PM5 (and soon the s.i.l. will follow suit!), who loves his family over anything else and keep forgetting that he’s the PM of Malaysia, thus provide opportunity to the sil to act as PM!
Remember Johoreans, Pak Dol told (lied to?) the nation that majority of you didn’t want the crooked bridge (because he wanted the term ‘crook’ only be referred to some kids at 4th floor led by his s.i.l.?). You’ve done well to deny Pak Dol from selling your sand to Singapura, causing them to initiate corrupt methods to smuggle sand instead.
This is payback time Johore. Ensure that all the previous years deprived rates be regained/incorporated in the new agreement.

  106. what’s the point of complaining that Singapore is selling Malaysians treated water at a higher price?
    Someone just something… alrite..
this matter has been lingering for so many years… i doubt resolving this issue will every going to happen anytime in the future..

I think this is the right time to practice transparency. Let’s discuss what Singapore term and condition openly. I’m very sure there are many brilliant Malaysians who can offer very good idea on how we can counter or negotiate better term with Singapore.
Bottom line, i don’t think it is unlawful or anything wrong to get a fair deal. I also sincerely hope that we don’t fall into the old trap like ‘Big country like Malaysia has always bully small country like Singapore’.

  109. Assalam alaikum
    YABhg Tun & Chedet Fellows
Zaman millenium!
    Wassalam
    Adieu…

  110. Kerajaan Malaysia seolah tunduk pada Kerajaan Singapura.
    Seolah dah tak percayakan Tuhan.
    Pedra hak Malaysia lawan kalah.
Tanjung Pagar yg tak perlu lawan pun mengalah.
Semacam Kerajaan Melayu dah tak ada otak.
Kalau bergini lanjutnya kasikan saja,Malaysia pada Kerajaan Singapura.Anak Bini kita pun kasi orang luar pelihara.
Mesti bertanggung jawab atas setiap keputusan kedepan.
Bukan nak potong riben sana sini.
Aci Bunting pun bolih potong riben.
Saya berharap benar Kerajaan Melayu mesti bertegas,
jangan dengar cadangan mereka, mereka banyak tipu helah.
Perunding Kerjaan mesti ada visi kedepan.
    Jangan layan alasan mereka.
Mereka tak bolih buat apa, jika kita tak setuju.
    Nak ke TakNak.Itu jawapan nya.
Samdol Kerjaan Malaysia yg bersekutu dengan mereka,
jangan kamu fikir mereka baik sama kamu tak ada sebab,
mereka bantu kamu untuk keperluan mereka, bukan untuk kamu.

  111. lebaikudin, lebaikudin… if Malaysia were to build its own water treatment plant in Johor, can you imagine what the cost would be like. If the actual cost is RM5 billion, it would be inflated to possibly RM20 billion so that it can comfortably line the pockets of our politicians and “selected” businessmen. Then after a few years, the Government would have to bail it out a it is running at a loss. Then the price of water for Johoreans would skyrocket.
As for Petronas exporting Malaysian oil, I believe its because Malaysia produces sweet crude which sells for a premium. This results in a profit for Petronas when it sells sweet crude and buys sour crude. Besides, different plants are constructed to refine different types of crude oil.

  112. If government is so hopeless at figuring out simple challenges, how then can we ever achieve Tun Dr. Mahathir’s Vision 2020 of sailing into the ocean of a developed nation? In fact, many good policies are been undone or left to rot. Take MDec for example. It is no more but a property lot.
There are many IT geniuses i know that are not given any chance to see the light of day to serve their country, and business there seems to be attracted by who can throw in a better property deal.

  113. You yourself should know the reason why Johor isn’t treating your own water. It cost 50 sens to buy treated water from Singapore and cost three times more to treat your own water.
Your water department when selling treated water from Singapore will make a lot more money then treating your own water isn’t it?

  114. I think Malaysian need fair agreement.
Why can’t Malaysia process all the raw water and sell only treated water to Singapore. I think Malaysia boleh. After all, water originated from Malaysia.
In addition, water price should not be made fixed but varied based on a formula that takes into account the average price of water sold to the end consumer in Malaysia (or the three big cities that is Johor, Selangor and Penang). Water price should be reviewed every year. With this agreement, if water price goes down Malaysian and Singaporean benefits it and when water price goes up, the cost is shared equally by Malaysian and Singaporean.. No one takes advantage of the other, no one can be accused lame and it is a win-win situation..
Malaysia should control the raw material so that it is fair between us and them and this will be a win-win situation lah
Perhaps, Malaysia will be accused trying to take over the job of Public Utility of Singapore, but the fact is that currently PUB is taking over the job of Syarikat Bekalan Air Johor by using the water which originated from Johor.

  115. Tun, With due respect you should not engaged in misleading your own people. The water agreement will lapse next year and all the equipment will be handed over to Johore in working order, unless there is a new agreement.
The total cost of processed water is MR2.40. So if sold at 50 sen, it means Singapore subsidises to the tune of MR1.90 per 1000 gallons. You should educate your people to think correctly so that there is no unnecessary misgivings.
Of course at subsidised rate Johore would want to buy as much as possible. How about allowing Singapore to buy treated water at 50sen per 1000 gallons from Johore?
Also the suggestion that if raw water is doubled to 6 sen then sale price would double to RM1.00. In that case Teh Tarik will double too!

  116. Salam Tun & fellow bloggers,
To eanisazman on November 10, 2010,
I COULD NOT EXPRESS ANY BETTER. Ameen

  119. Tun
It seems this water saga will see never end of it even though the first agreement is expected to lapse by next year. You were not present when the water agreement was drafted & casted in stone then and yet, you continue to cry foul in hope to build up emotion sentiments in your own country. SIN is now the world leader in the treatment of re-cycled water and it is all thanks to you during your tenure as 4th PM of Malaysia for ‘threatening’ to shut off the pipeline when some events in SIN displeased you but you know jolly well the water-tight clauses in the agreement will never win you the case if contested in the world court. SIN has moved streets ahead in transforming itself into a world city instead of engaging in trivial argument over water agreement especially with you. It is probably Malaysia’s good fortune that the present administration has the good present of mind to focus on urgent issues, i.e. to put Malaysia in the world map.

  120. Tun,
I am surprised that you are still harping on this issue which you were unable to resolve during your tenure as PM.
Anyway, it is water under the bridge. You did your readers a dis-service by talking about negotiating a new agreement with Singapore when one of the agreements expires next year.
I understand that the other side has already indicated that they not only will let that agreement lapse, but will also hand over to us, free-of-charge, and in good working order, the entire water treatment facility when the agreement ends. And you persist in calling them “unfriendly”?
It just shows that when one is continuously being threatened, one will find ways and means to survive. In this case, your own confrontational conduct has allowed Singapore not only to soon become self sufficient in water, but also a universal model in water-treatment which even the Arab countries are learning from.

  121. Ayahanda Tun,
    1. First, our ministry who deal with Malaysia Permanent Water Agreement must get approval and fair unit price bidding from Johore state before they renew the agreement with Singapore Government.
    2. Today, I believe our Federal government and Singapore government must deal this renewal agreement with accountability and transparency.
    3. Both governments must come out with the best deal that is comfortable to Federal Malaysia, Johore and Singapore for at least another 30 to 50 years from today.
    4. Point:

  122. Salam Tun and Bloggers,
Agree with you 100%. For crying out loud, this unfair agreement and all of the other sour deals that we’ve committed to has to end. Malaysian have been facing moral issues over incompetency of the previous international negotiators to negotiate a win situation to Malaysia. Often we are on the losing side.
We lost our soil, our oil blocks, cannot build a bridge, have to surrender our sand, our air space, cannnot build our own damn, etc…It’s like people are spitting on our face while we are there smiling
What is the root cause? Is corruption is involved between our negotiators with these countries? Or is it just a mere stupidity or incompetencies? hmmmm…
DS Najib administration should do their level best to improve our position internationally and make this country respectable. But I think we should exclude football cause this seems impossible to improve *just kidding.

  123. Salam Tun and Bloggers,
1.It’s cheaper in longer term to build our own water treatment plant in Johor
2.In economic term it’s called economic of scale
3.The same puzzling question applied to Petronas, where we import fuel for domestic consumption, while exporting raw petroleum
4.Of course it’s cheaper to buy than building our own plant, considering the staggering cost and break even could take 10-20 years
5.Malaysians are famous in expecting fast return,in other word short sighted
6.That’s the reason ‘skim cepat kaya’ flourished
    7.I rest my case
    Wassalam

  124. Salam Tun & fellow bloggers,
Tun, I thought you would never raise this issue again. Syabas Tun, because this issue should open the eyes of ALL MALAYSIANS, 1MALAYSIA maa. No doubt we are very generous lot. But there must be a limit to that. We should be generous on items that we have a lot /extra to be offered to others in need especially our neigbours. But this must be reciprocated, if they too can have the same mentality towards us. Unfortunately this was not the case. Being a society that practicing KIASU mentality, this will never happen as proven during the Asian financial crisis ( Why can’t Malaysian learn for once ) when for what I understand they were one the factors or players that further contribute to our financial woe or problem. Even Mr.Habibi of Indonesian President of the time made a statement after knowing the conditions set by this KIASU in proposing assistance sought by Indonesia, ” IF THIS IS A FRIEND THEN WE DO NOT NEED ANY ENEMY ” Think about it.
If we rationalise the situation, ideally both need each other to prosper but not necessarily. But because we are too generous towards them, they consider it as a sign of our weakness to be exploited as they always like to establish relationship using KIASU philosophy. ” we would honour the understanding/agreement of give and take as long as when we are in a weak/same position but when we are in a stronger position, why should we honour such agreement, we deserve to take all?” survival the fittest maa. Will that ring the bell? Remember the Tg Pagar & immigration issue? It seems the matter now had been “solved” ( or is it? )but subject to “futher conditions to be discussed/negotiated” Meanwhile they already got what they want while what will get in return is uncertained subject to those future negotiation. We are already taking a weak position in negotiation – what to expect?) Just like the Israel-Palestinian issue, so many concesions already given by the Palestinians but what specific thing Palestians get in return? so far nothing except “we will work for peace” but subject to ..bla.bla.bla.
Please… all Malaysian wake-up. These issues with our so called neighbour should be brought to Parliament if we were to accept any terms of the agreement ( open & transparent ) and cannot be decided by one person or for that matter a group of people. For its national significant interest, the people should be given the mandate to decide. I do not know whether this can or how it can be done but I think TUN will know better. But for sure I know that such significant national interest cannot be decided over dinner or a game of golf or with a single meeting for that matter.
Please TUN, do not let go this issues so freely. I and I beleive many of us will share this views. We need YOU ever and more.
Enough is enough. Even though you are not having any post in the government or UMNO/BN, but believe me many NGOs as pressure groups, will support you in submitting your proposal/advice to the present government on these issue with our neighbour.
May Allah protect us and bless us with strength to face and resolve emicably this issue, ameeen.

  125. Tun,
    A.Alshukor
