1. Not many people know what these letters stand for. I too did not know until some Japanese MPs gave me a badge with “No to TPP” for me to wear.
2. They told me that TPP means Trans Pacific Partnership. It is conceived and promoted by the United States of America. Apparently Malaysia had agreed to join this new organization.
3. The MP asked me why did Malaysia join? I must admit I could not answer.
5. Once upon a time they proposed GATT (General Agreement on Tariff and Trade). Numerous meetings were held but the rich countries were protective of their products (wheat and soya bean oil in the case of the United States). No agreement was ever reached.
6. In frustration we proposed the East Asia Economic Community so as to balance the power of the North America Free Trade Association (NAFTA) and the European Union.
7. America (James Baker) told Japan, Korea, Singapore and Indonesia to reject the EAEC. Instead America supported Australia’s proposal for APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Conference) which would include America and Australia. As usual America dominated the organisation.
8. In the meantime America proposed a borderless world and globalisation to enable America to break the tariff barriers of the countries of the world. Most countries balked at the idea of the free flow of capital and investments by the rich countries. A borderless world would not include free flow of people from the poor to the rich. So it is not a borderless world after all.
9. Unable to achieve much America then promoted bilateral free trade agreements. Singapore which is already a free market acceded and entered into an FTA with America. Now the pressure is on for Malaysia to have FTA with America and Europe.
10. Now comes the TPP – the Transpacific Partnership. Malaysia has decided to join. Japan and other SEA countries have agreed to study.
11. What the United States wants most is access to contracts for Government procurements. This is something which every country, including the United States uses to support domestic businesses and industries. Once the United States gains access, not only will it make bids but their Government pressure would be used to favour their companies.
12. I wonder whether Malaysian negotiators have studied the full implication of the TPP. When we look at previous international agreements entered into by Malaysia, we seem to be always at the losing side; e.g. we agreed to sell water to Singapore at 3 cent per 1000 gallons forever, buy military aircrafts without source codes so they cannot be used even to defend us, delay of 6 months in the construction of our naval vessels would entitle us to compensation but beyond six months no compensation and the delay was for two years, and many more.
13. I fear the TPP would not give us any worthwhile benefit. If the Government has not finalised or ratified the TPP, I hope it would study it very carefully.
Salam Tun;
Biasa lah itu memang sudah menjadi tabiat orang putih(barat) sejak dari dulu lagi. tak kan kita semua orang2 lamaitu pasti tau.
Kita belajar melalui pengalaman.
The way things are happening, daya rasa macam ada more corruption case coming out in Singapore.
For the time being, kalau ada masa, silalah baca di lelaman web berikut-
http://www.treemeritus.com
http://www.temasektimes.com
http://www.therealsingapore.com
http://www.theonlinecitizen.com
Lihatlah, orang bangsa apa yang banyak terbabit in corruption.
In Islam where corruption is concerned, both the giver and the recipient are guilty parties.
Allah maha kuasa and Allah sahaja yang akan protect Islam.
May Allah protect all Muslims. Ameen.
Salam sejahtera Tun,
Saya pun hairan mengapa DS Najib tak meminta pendapat Tun berkenaan perkara ini.
Another case of Melayu mudah lupa.
Kami tersangat merindui pemeritahan mu Tun
May Allah Bless You Tun Amiin

Tun M and all,
I have read that the Bar Council believes that the freedom of association must be driven by demand and needs, not compulsion through legislation…..in reference to the suggestion of Law Academy…..
Why is the Bar Council interfering when every lawyer is “automatically” a member of the Bar Council when he or she is called to the bar? Is not it a compulsion here ?
BTW, let the Government set up the Law Academy and let those qualified law degree holders out there decide.
It is not up to the Bar Council to bark when it has nothing to do with their members.
This is also like freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of monopoly, freedom of afraid of being sidelined ???
Oh sudin (June 17, 2012 at 4:26 am),
You have really made my day.
Love your comments against juks.
Yeah. He loves to look down on us. His favourite words are “malay head”, “idiot”, ‘bodoh” etc.
He has always commented how ridiculous he finds when I praise and”worship” (he likes this word so much) Tun M.
I have been telling him it is none of his business as I have never discouraged him to love anybody he likes.
6 years is a longggggg period. Ouch !
Thanks sudin.
Congrats Tun for your profound article…this was the first time you wrote without any political purpose..you’ve a concrete reason on why US propose TPP but i wonder why can’t you see the reason why Malaysia agree to join this scheme…i don’t think our government is so dumb for not to see the implication of TTP to Malaysia…they know it would benefit US more but why do they still join the group anyway ?…i think i know why
1. looking at the current situation in our country, UMNO position as the federal government is at stakes. Thus, they are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their survival. They are willing to sold the value of Malaysian citizenship to foreigners in exchange for votes for the ruling party and now they wanted to join TPP which obviously benefited US more than malaysia.
2. The question is how does joining TPP would do any help to ensure umno survival. We know that America is fond of anwar for many years. In fact, when you put him in jail. America is among one of the party that against it. Najib not only want the support of the rakyat but also the support of international community including America. Thus, the idea to join TPP is to shift the American support from anwar to najib.
3. you may disagree with me…its fine…but i don’t think that i have made wrong analysis
Not to buy much weapons from America
They will have the double standards towards us
It is proven
Again we need to seek a secure weapons ahead
And from elsewhere
Better to have our very own idea and technology
Research and development if bomohism proven
We can spent on it
As much as North Korea even they have poverty
Yet they built their out of their poverty
If not they will be bullied
As for water agreement
Water is not a charitable product
It is a commecial product that have price
Singapore New Water is just a tool to bargain from us
It,s more of technology research for them to sell these technology to middle east
I pray there is no symstoms of it
They have a choice of natural clean water
They refuse to pay us much as much as they can pay for their military advancement. F16 takes a few minutes to fly over there
Yet they buy
Not just that Malaysia govt did not gain any from perishables produce import to Singapora,it,s free levy
Singapore govt did nothing yet they earn 7percent gst out of Malaysia produce
Malaysia Minister are incompetence
They never did their homework well
Discussion leads to personal disputes that narrows to an unclear
positive decisions
Many of their agreement does not fruits Malaysia
I rather ask a 10years boy to close a deal for Malaysia
Salam Tun,
TPP ? I do not believe it is important what it is called.
The point is USA is not going to go away. A super power with a financial crisis is a super power never the less. Make no mistake.
I would welcome USA to this region. Isn’t it about time ? How come the people here believe the international media ? You really think USA is all that bad ? C’mon. There are many places in this world, Asia inlcuded, you can find horrible acts and horrible people/governments. Does that make USA bad ? Does it make China bad ?
I think we are confusing the tress from the forest. People want to be closer together, telecommunications and technology makes that possible, borders are coming down, and we are afraid of what ? It is not as if aliens are about to take over the planet or something.
So what’s wrong with people of the world coming together ? Does it signify the end of the world ? Or isn’t it a sign of a new beginning ?
For how long we wish to remain under our BN coconut shell ?
Thank You Tun
Tun
It seems Malaysia sometimes lose out in international negotiations by holding the wrong end of the stick. Apart from water, there were whispers of losing out on palm oil tariffs, etc. etc.
One of the iconic institutions which should be established is the Institute for Foreign Affairs. We could invite top flight researchers or speakers to up-date us on current topics of the world. A few more of such renown institutions will do a lot of good as most civil servants are busily attending seminars or courses daily.
Until your tenure as Prime Minister, the sovereignty, the national interest and the self-esteem of the Nation were not much understood. If at all, there was always a happy-go-lucky attitude towards these three essential attributes of a nation. Or else, we get bullied by the sly and the cunning.
As long as we are aware that we are not betraying our beloved Nation through self-interest and ignoring the three essential attributes, we have already safe-guarded ourselves in a certain way.
In the world of today, it is dangerours to take sides with any hegemonic super power because of the unique nature of Malaysia – its strategic location, its diverse peoples, its natural resources, its political stability which is the envy of some etc.
Malaysia’s foreign policy has always been to be friends with all.
Definitely, there is a special benefit to be friends with all the super-powers. But to go into a lop-sided agreement with any of them which is to the exclusion of others may not be a wise and prudent decision.
Not forgetting that the Cold War 1948 – 1989 is no longer with us and certainly Malaysia should try to avoid being drag into some conflict of an unknown nature in the future.
The TPP seems to recruit its members one by one. Why not engage ASEAN as a bloc ?
We are now friends with all the countries of the world especially with the super powers.
But charity begins always at home. There is an ancient saying that ‘ If there is peace and harmony in the family, a person can always win in the streets ‘.
Malaysia has no place in any containment exercise because we rely on the free market and the free trade and friends around the globe. We import most of our food and essentials. And we are a small country compared with the other giants amongst us. We have ambitions but would be happy to be near world class with our brands or whatever.
As for China, no Chinamen were permitted to leave the Heavenly Kingdom till the decline and collapse of the Ching Dynasty beginning the second half of the 19th and at the turn of the 20th centuries. There was no history of China of being a colonialist or an aggressor in the real sense of the word. Sinkiang and Tibet were tributaries of many centuries ago. The Dalai Lama was jollying himself with the present Chinese Government for many years when suddenly he changed his mind and fled.
Malaysia should not involve itself in world politics and had adopted the correct stance during the Cold War. Then, the nearest alliance we had with the United States as far as I could remember was the R & R soldiers from Vietnam in Cecil Street, Kuala Lumpur and the United States Army Walter Reed Medical Research Unit, 1948-1982 and the Hooper Foundation at the Institute of Medical Research, Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, the Peace Corps and the Ford Foundation. All these Agencies benefited Malaysia with their presence.
But today, the world is at peace and all of Malaysia’s resources should be utilised for her own development eg, human and otherwise. We are short of trained people and not efficient in the placement of money for the general good. Time would be better spent at home minding our home fires than attending TPP meetings in lush Hawaii or other exotic places.
Malaysia can always join the TPP later.
Tun,
The United States is not a trustworthty ally that Malaysia should runs into any partnership at all.
This can be seen from the way they ditches their allies from the cold war.
They did not hestitates to abandon their allies of military dictators in the cold war once their pupose is of no use any more to them.
The fomer State Secretary is reported to have warns the South Koreans not to support the EAEC mooted by Malaysia.
Baker’s is also reported to have told the South Koreans that the US will not tolerate the creations of any new ‘mini japan’.
It looks like the Malaysian goverment still have yet to learnt from history.
Salam Tun.
Why we malay..sians always at the losing side?
We learn history in school and anywhere. One thing that the malay never learn is to learn the lessons. Melayu mudah lupa.
Malays are very tolerate people. Thats why chinese and indian can become malaysian. However they never say thanks. Now they ask somemore and try to ditch the malay. And the malay still dont want to learn. Some of them still love peliwat and tok guru ajaran sesat. What a pity.
So why we always at the losing side? Our nature i guess. Dont you think?
Assalamualaikum Tun,
The US will act on something only if it is in its interest. The TPP excludes China. By excluding China, the US wants to dominate the TPP, being the only superpower in the new organisation.
The international media always wants to portray China as the big bully. From how they present the news, the underlying theme is “China is the big bully, becoming a bigger bully as its strength grows. The US is coming to Asia to counter this big bully. All Asian countries are happy the US is coming although quietly.”
The international media did not show any evidence whatsoever of China bullying fellow Asian countries. Nor was there any evidence any Asian countries welcoming the US coming to Asia. Even in the Scarborough shoal incident, it was the Philippines that attempted to detain Chinese fishermen, not the other way around. All this talk about China being a big bully only surfaced when the US announces its attention to focus on Asia.
I think this is a form of mind control or propaganda by the international media. By continuing to portray that China is the big bully and US is helping the Asian countries, the puppet masters want to influence Asian nations to support them attack China.
I think its time for China and the rest of Asian countries started controlling the international media.
Clearly currently the international media is biased towards the West, the US in particular.
I think its time for China, with its trillions in reserves, and other Asian countries to start buying the international media like BBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, Fox News, CNN, etc. I think China could spare a few billions.
The war is currently fought in multiple dimensions, one of it is the international media.
Currently cash rich Asian countries are confined to buying international football clubs. Maybe its time to consider entering the international media?
The US and Europe is in the worst financial crisis in history. As they say, in times of crisis, cash is king. I’m sure the owners of these international media would desperately need cash by now since their businesses are declining.
Good morning YAB,
14. What is TPP?
15. http://www.ustr.gov/round-10-kuala-lumpur
16. Malaysia Government cannot just rely PETRONAS on gas and oil to earn tax revenue to run the economy.
17. TPP is definitely an additional safety raft especially for SMI to export Malaysian products and services into Asia Pacific Region that the government of the day must look into.
18. The question on “Why Malaysian negotiators always on the loosing side?”
19. The only reason that I can think of right now is “mudah kaya via komisyen, kan duit tu duit kerajaan.”
20. Like what YAB said, “Cikgu kencing berdiri, murid kencing berlari.
Good day, YAB.
Askm Tun,
I share your concern. It seem that our negotiators may not have the negotiation skill in most cases. They attended various relevant courses yet do they really acquire the required knowledge & skill and most important of all, apply them to benefit the nation as the utmost priority. Water & Tg Pagar land issues seem to have resolved so fast as soon as DSN become PM whereas you have failed for years to get Singapore to agree. What is the difference and why the people have not been fully informed about particular issues that Singapore government have conceded. Have the terms of the agreement presented to the parliment and endorsed before the agreement is rectified? Reading through the media on the general terms of the agreement, I believe Malaysia will not benefit in the long term. I hope I am proved wrong.
I like to recall my experience during my employment with one of the GLCs where the CEO was authorised to negotiate an international tender for a project in Malaysia by one of the MNCs. The negotiation was done in Europe. The mandate given by the Board was to negotiate & secure the tender with minimum 6% net profit margin. It was later informed that the tender would be broken-up into 8 packages to be negotiated and awarded separately. Consequently, the company was awarded 3 packages, each with only 2% net profit margin. In the report back to the Board, the CEO justified that the total net profit margin met the mandate given i.e. 6%. Is it? As simple as that a CEO of a GLC could make that kind of blunder. Of cource, if any of our government negotiators had made such kind of blunder, our national long term interest & security will be in danger…May Allah SWT protect us.
Good evening,
The whole world knows that the good ole US of A has been and will always be the policeman, judge, arbitrator, jury, etc etc etc so why do we still engage them?
Simple answer : everyone likes to suck up to the power that is and too bad if you’re not in the same gang with them.
They have been and will continue dominating the world’s stage till such a time when another bigger power overtakes them but this scenario seems unlikely so quite some time simply because everyone is busy looking out for themselves.
We have huff and puff and huff forever but the brick house will not crumble because of the foundation upon which it was built on. Nobody has the political willpower to take them on for it is akin to running into a brick wall.
Until there is unity in the world, USA will continue to dominate in all aspects that they deem fit to “sebok”.
Blame not them but ourself for we allow them to do so.
We still send our children to study there.
We still buy their products simply because it’s “branded”
We still watch their shows
We still idolised (sigh) things AMERICAN.
Apa macam?
Not proud of our own products?
Or not confident of our own products?
Change the mindset and we will change the world’s economy.
Easier said than done right?
Walk the talk but too bad not many can and will do it.
sigh………….
Thank you.
“e.g. we agreed to sell water to Singapore at 3 cent per 1000 gallons forever,…”
You forgot under whose Prime Ministership this was agreed to? Or who appointed the civil servants and legal “experts” to sit in on these negotiations?
I ‘m begining to lose faith in this current leadership. This is my first time, knowing about TPP. I’m ex-QA, doing trial testing for initial Mass Production on some consumer product. I first thought, it’s ‘Trial Pre-Production’. Never heard the news that we, Malaysia have agreed to join.
Wait and see when our reigning PM falls severely ill. Where do you think he go for medication? MatSalleh country or K.L GH?
